Fe(III) Mixed IP6@Au NPs with Enhanced SERS Activity for Detection of 4-ATP

Soft surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensing platform based on an oil-in-water emulsion stabilized by silver nanoparticles

Pickering emulsions are excellent candidates for developing soft biosensors utilized for detecting native biomolecules such as peptides and proteins through the Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) transduction mechanism. Here, we have developed a SERS sensor based on oil-in-water Pickering emulsions stabilized by Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) with the Raman active molecule (4-Aminothiphenol, 4ATP) adsorbed to their surface. The structural properties and composition of the Pickering emulsion were tuned to meet the demands of the maximal optical response. Our results show that the obtained SERS signals of the main studied Pickering emulsion (water: oil ratio 7:3, 1 wt% Ag-NPs) outperformed colloidal dispersions with the same Ag-NPs concentration by 10-fold at any studied content of 4ATP. The superior optical response of the Pickering emulsion compared to the colloidal dispersion can thus pave the way for the detection of a large variety of analytes at high sensitivity by a soft sensing device. This study innovates by comparing the SERS signals of Raman-active Ag-NPs when they are assembled at the oil/water interface of an emulsion to the case where the NPs are individually dispersed in the medium. The findings shed light on the edit value of utilizing Raman-active Pickering stabilizers for biosensing applications.

Determination of Dicofol in Tea Using Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Coupled Chemometrics

Dicofol is a highly toxic residual pesticide in tea, which seriously endangers human health. A method for detecting dicofol in tea by combining stoichiometry with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technology was proposed in this study. AuNPs were prepared, and silver shells were grown on the surface of AuNPs to obtain core-shell Au@AgNPs. Then, the core-shell Au@AgNPs were attached to the surface of a PDMS membrane by physical deposition to obtain a Au@AgNPs/PDMS substrate. The limit of detection (LOD) of this substrate for 4-ATP is as low as 0.28 × 10^-11 mol/L, and the LOD of dicofol in tea is 0.32 ng/kg, showing high sensitivity. By comparing the modeling effects of preprocessing and variable selection algorithms, it is concluded that the modeling effect of Savitzky-Golay combined with competitive adaptive reweighted sampling-partial least squares regression is the best (Rp = 0.9964, RPD = 10.6145). SERS technology combined with stoichiometry is expected to rapidly detect dicofol in tea without labels.

Theoretical predictions and experimental verifications of SERS detection in colorants

Synthetic colorants added during food processing not only fail to provide nutrients, but also can be harmful to human health when used in excess. To establish a simple, convenient, rapid and low-cost surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection method for colorants, an active surface-enhanced substrate of colloidal gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was prepared in this study. The density functional theory (DFT) method of B3LYP with 6-31G(d) was applied to determine the theoretical Raman spectra of erythrosine, basic orange 2, 21 and 22, and to attribute their characteristic spectral peaks. The SERS spectra of the four colorants were pre-processed using local least squares (LLS) and morphological weighted penalized least squares (MWPLS), and multiple linear regression (MLR) models were established to quantify the four colorants in beverages. The results showed that the prepared AuNPs with a particle size of about 50 nm were reproducible and stable, with a good enhancement of the SERS spectrum of rhodamine 6G at 10-8 mol L-1. The theoretical Raman frequencies were in good agreement with the experimental Raman frequencies, and the peak position differences of the main characteristic peaks of the four colorants were within 20 cm-1. The MLR calibration models for the concentrations of the four colorants showed relative errors of prediction (REP) of 2.97-8.96%, root mean square errors of prediction (RMSEP) of 0.03-0.94, R2 of 0.973-0.999, and limits of detection of 0.06 μg mL-1. The present method could be used to quantify erythrosine, basic orange 2, 21, and 22, revealing its wide range of applications in food safety.

To dimerize or not: para-aminothiophenol on a bismuth heterostructure

Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) of p-aminothiophenol (PATP) was investigated on β-Bi₂O₃/Bi₂O₂CO₃ nanoparticles, a novel bismuth based metal substrate with the lowest limit of detection of 1 mM. Unlike on noble metal surfaces where PATP gets converted to p,p'-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) due to photocatalytic coupling, no such transformation of PATP was observed on β-Bi₂O₃/Bi₂O₂CO₃ nanoparticles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the PW91PW91/LANL2DZ/6-311+G(d,p) level of theory supported the experimental results exceedingly well. Also, the charge transfer direction from PATP to β-Bi₂O₃/Bi₂O₂CO₃ nanoparticles was revealed by the projected density of states calculation.

π-Conjugated Small Organic Molecule-Modified 2D MoS2 with a Charge-Localization Effect Enabling Direct and Sensitive SERS Detection

Organic semiconductors have been discovered to exhibit impressive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity recently. However, owing to the underdeveloped candidate materials and relatively low SERS sensitivity, practical application of SERS detection based on organic materials is still a challenge. Herein, we explored ways to further enhance the SERS sensitivity of π-conjugated fluorinated 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane derivatives (F_nTCNQ, n = 2, 4) by utilizing the charge-localization effect induced by two-dimensional (2D) MoS₂ flakes. A strong Raman signal enhancement in SERS has been realized via an organic/2D heterostructure constructed by F_nTCNQ nanostructures grown on a 2D MoS₂ flake. Moreover, F₂TCNQ and F₄TCNQ show different SESR sensitivities due to different numbers of cyano groups leading to different charge transfer (CT) directions. The SERS enhancement factor (EF) of methylene blue (MB) molecules on the optimal F₄TCNQ/MoS₂ nanocomposite substrate can reach as high as 2.531 × 10⁶, and the concentration of the limit of detection (LOD) is as low as 10^-10 M. The SERS results for MB, rhodamine 6G (R6G), and 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) molecules demonstrate that high versatility, low cost, good stability, and easy preparation will make the F_nTCNQ/MoS₂ SERS platform promising for the detection of trace molecules. The studies on the complex microscopic interaction of organic/2D composite nanomaterials will provide some novel insights into improved SERS performance and mechanisms.

A simple mesoporous silica Nanoparticle-based aptamers SERS sensor for the detection of acetamiprid

In this study, we developed a novel, rapid, simple, and sensitive nano sensor based on the controlled release of 4-Aminothiophenol (4-ATP) signal molecules from aptamers (Apts) modified aminated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs-NH₂) for the quantitative detection of acetamiprid (ACE). Firstly, we synthesized the positively charged MSNs-NH₂ by one-pot method, then loaded 4-ATP signal molecules into the pore, and finally electrostatically adsorbed the Apts onto the MSNs-NH₂, which acts as a gate to control the release of signal molecules. When ACE is added to the system, ACE preferentially and specifically binds to Apts, so the gate opens and 4-ATP signal molecules are released from the pore. Meanwhile, the silver-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Ag@SiO₂) were prepared by one-pot method as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate to amplify the signal. The intensity of 4-ATP signal molecules at 1433 cm^-1 position was observed to has a linear relationship with the concentration of ACE by SERS detection. Under the optimized detection conditions, a linear correlation was observed in the range of 5-60 ng/mL (R² = 0.99749), and the limit of detection (LOD) was 2.66 ng/mL. The method has high sensitivity, good selectivity and reproducibility, and can be used for actual sample analysis with the recovery rate of 96.24-103.6 %. This study provides a reference for the rapid and convenient detection of ACE in agricultural products.

A stable and plug-and-play aluminium/titanium dioxide/metal-organic framework/silver composite sheet for sensitive Raman detection and photocatalytic removal of 4-aminothiophenol

The sensitive detection and rapid removal of 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP, a poisonous pesticide) demand special design to potential substrates. Herein, a metal-organic framework (ZIF-8) and Ag nanoparticles were fabricated one by one on the TiO₂ coated Al sheet, and thus the Al-TiO₂-ZIF-8-Ag sheet with sandwich structure was successfully synthesized. The cost-effective Al-TiO₂-ZIF-8-Ag sheet (3.7 wt% Ag) possessed a low detection concentration of 1 × 10^-9 M towards 4-ATP, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) analytical enhanced factor (AEF) of the Al-TiO₂-ZIF-8-Ag was 2.6 × 10⁶, which was higher than other similar substrates. Furthermore, 4-ATP can be selectively and repeatedly detected on the Al-TiO₂-ZIF-8-Ag even through it was in real samples. It indicated that the Al-TiO₂-ZIF-8-Ag was a very active and stable SERS materials for the monitoring of 4-ATP. Importantly, the substrate exhibited faster and more efficient photocatalytic activity for 4-ATP degradation. The SERS and photocatalytic mechanisms of 4-ATP on the Al-TiO₂-ZIF-8-Ag substrate were proposed. The cost-effective Al-TiO₂-ZIF-8-Ag sheet with double function is plug-and-play, and could be used in the detection and treatment of pollutants in wastewater.

Plasmonic tunable Ag-coated gold nanorod arrays as reusable SERS substrates for multiplexed antibiotics detection

Antibiotic contaminants in aqueous media pose a serious threat to human and ecological environments. Therefore, it is necessary to develop robust strategies to detect antibiotic residues. For this purpose, a self-assembly and in situ electrochemical reduction method is utilized to tailor silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)-coated GNRs (AgNPs/GNRs) large-scale vertical arrays. These AgNPs/GNRs arrays exhibit outstanding surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activities because of abundant Raman hot-spots among the adjacent AgNPs and GNRs, but also excellent stability and reproducibility due to the close-packed arrayed nanostructure. These remarkable features validate this arrayed substrate for high-sensitivity 4-aminothiophenol analysis with a detection limit of 0.35 pM and self-cleaning via electrochemical stripping of the adsorbed analytes and AgNPs from the GNRs arrays, therefore realizing renewable SERS applications. Moreover, the distinct SERS performance of AgNPs/GNRs arrays is verified via the analysis of multiplexed antibiotics at tens of picomolar level and no apparent changes of SERS activities are observed when recyclability is explored. The result demonstrates that the proposed AgNPs/GNRs arrays provide a novel strategy for avoiding conventional, disposable SERS substrates, as well as expanding SERS applications for simultaneous sensing and stripping of environmental contaminants.

Applications of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy in detection fields

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a Raman spectroscopy technique that has been widely used in food safety, environmental monitoring, medical diagnosis and treatment and drug monitoring because of its high selectivity, sensitivity, rapidness, simplicity and specificity in identifying molecular structures. This review introduces the detection mechanism of SERS and summarizes the most recent progress concerning the use of SERS for the detection and characterization of molecules, providing references for the later research of SERS in detection fields.
