Step-Adsorption of Vanadium (V) and Chromium (VI) in the Leaching Solution with Melamine

Efficient removal of Cr (VI) by Bifunction zinc porphyrin COF: Coupling adsorption with Photocatalysis, performance Evaluation, and mechanism analysis

HYPOTHESIS

Hexavalent chromium, recognized as one of the most toxic heavy metals, demands the development of advanced materials capable of both adsorption and photocatalysis for effective Cr (VI) removal.

EXPERIMENTS

This study successfully synthesized a two-dimensional zinc porphyrin covalent organic framework (ZnPor-COF) via a solvent-based method. Performance evaluations have demonstrated that the ZnPor-COF possesses outstanding capabilities for the adsorptive and/or photocatalytic elimination of Cr (VI). Particularly noteworthy is the observation that when adsorption and photocatalysis are coupled, the ZnPor-COF attains an exceptional 99.7 % removal rate for a Cr (VI) concentration of 30 mg/L within just 60 min, with minimal susceptibility to coexisting ions. After five consecutive cycles, the material sustains a removal efficiency of 90 %, indicative of its robust cyclability.

FINDINGS

Theoretical calculations, as well as experimental validations, have indicated that the integration of Zn ions into the porphyrin COF not only results in an expanded specific surface area and an increased count of adsorption sites but also significantly improves the COF's photosensitivity and the capability for charge carrier separation. Furthermore, the core of the synergistic effect between adsorption and photocatalysis lies in the ability of photocatalysis to substantially augment the adsorption process.

Recovery of vanadium with melamine in acidic medium

Many hydro-metallurgical methods are developed to recover vanadium, while ammonium salt precipitation possesses the final step and it has threatened the environment. The key point is to find a new compound to replace ammonium salts without reducing vanadium recovery efficiency. Some compounds with -NH2 function groups have attracted our attention as they have similar function groups with ammonium salts. In this paper, the adsorption of vanadium with melamine is conducted. The results show that high adsorption efficiency can be achieved in a short time and melamine displays great performance in the recovery of all concentrations of vanadium. Response surface methodology (RSM) is used to optimize the reaction conditions and order the parameters: reaction temperature > concentration of vanadium > dosage of melamine > reaction time. 99.63% vanadium is adsorbed under optimized conditions: n(melamine)/n(V) = 0.6, reaction time of 60 min, 10 g/L vanadium solution and reaction temperature of 60°C. The successful application of melamine in the recovery of vanadium provides a new way for the utilization of melamine and also a glorious future for -NH2 compounds in the recovery heavy metals.

Co-Removal of Fe/V Impurity in H2TiO3 Synthesized from Ti-Bearing Blast Furnace Slag

Ti-bearing blast furnace slag (TBFS) can be converted to impurity bearing TiOSO4 solution for TiO2 pigment production. However, the H2TiO3 (MTA) hydrolyzed from the solution has too high Fe/V impurity to meet the standard for TiO2 pigment. In this study, we found that Fe3+ and V3+ were easily hydrolyzed and entered the MTA lattice, and hence could not be removed by washing. Furthermore, Fe/V was hard to co-remove by the traditional reduction method. Therefore, the Fe/V non-hydrolysis condition (Ti3+ = 0.01 M, F = 3.0, T = 130 °C; Ti3+ = 0.01 M, F = 3.5, T = 150 °C) was determined by thermodynamic calculations. However, at these conditions, the Ti hydrolysis ratio was low or the reaction time was long. Therefore, a new two-step hydrothermal hydrolysis process was proposed. Step 1 (130 °C, 2 h) ensured the non-hydrolysis of V3+, and Ti was partially hydrolyzed to increase the H2SO4 concentration. Step 2 (150 °C, 2 h) ensured a high Ti hydrolysis ratio (>0.95) and short total reaction time (4-6 h). Finally, a high-purity MTA was obtained (Fe = 21 ppm, V = 145 ppm). These results provide new insights into the control of the hydrolysis of impurity ions in solutions and help to optimize the process of TiO2 pigment preparation from TBFS.

Enhanced selective separation of vanadium(V) and chromium(VI) using the CeO2 nanorod containing oxygen vacancies

Adsorption of vanadium from wastewater defends the environment from toxic ions and contributes to recover the valuable metal. However, it is still challenging for the separation of vanadium (V⁵⁺) and chromium (Cr⁶⁺) because of their similar properties. Herein, a kind of CeO₂ nanorod containing oxygen vacancies is facilely synthesized which displays ultra-high selectivity of V⁵⁺ against various competitive ions (i.e., Fe, Mn, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Cd, Ba, Pb, Mg, Be, and Co). Moreover, a large separation factor (SF_V/Cr) of 114,169.14 for the selectivity of V⁵⁺ is achieved at the Cr⁶⁺/V⁵⁺ ratio of 80 with the trace amount of V⁵⁺ (~ 1 mg/L). The results show that the process of V⁵⁺ uptake is the monolayer homogeneous adsorption and is controlled by external and intraparticle diffusions. In addition, it also shows that V⁵⁺ is reduced to V³⁺ and V⁴⁺ and then formation of V-O complexation. This work offers a novel CeO₂ nanorod material for efficient separation of V⁵⁺ and Cr⁶⁺ and also clarifies the mechanism of the V⁵⁺ adsorption on the CeO₂ surface.

A Clean Method for Vanadium (V) Reduction with Oxalic Acid

Water pollution deteriorates ecosystems and is a great threat to the environment. The environmental benefits of wastewater treatment are extremely important to minimize pollutants. Here, the oxalic acid used as reductant was used to treat the wastewater which contained high concentration of vanadium (V). Nearly 100% of vanadium was efficiently reduced at selected reaction conditions. The optimization results simulated by response surface methodology (RSM) analysis indicated the parameters all had significant effects on the reduction process, and followed the order: dosage of oxalic acid > reaction temperature > reaction time > initial pH of vanadium-containing wastewater. The reduction behavior analysis indicated that the pseudo first-order kinetics model could describe well the reduction process with Ea = 42.14 kJ/mol, and was described by the equation as followed: −LnC=K0·[pH]0.1016·[n(O)/n(V)]2.4569·[T]2.2588·exp(−42.14/T)·t.

Thermodynamic and Kinetic Studies on Adsorption of Vanadium with Glutamic Acid

Many hydrometallurgy methods, including chemical precipitation, ion exchange, solvent extraction, and adsorption, have been used to recover vanadium from vanadium solution, but the final step of these methods involved precipitation with ammonium salts, high concentrations of which are harmful to the environment. The key point is to find a new compound to replace ammonium salts without reducing the vanadium precipitation efficiency. The adsorption process of vanadium with glutamic acid is investigated. The effects of experimental factors, including dosage of glutamic acid, reaction temperature, concentration of H2SO4, and reaction time, on the adsorption process are investigated. The results show that nearly 91.66% vanadium is adsorbed under the following reaction conditions: reaction temperature of 90 °C, H2SO4 concentration of 20 g/L, glutamic acid dosage at n(glu)/n(V) = 3.0:1, and reaction time of 60 min. The response surface methodology is applied to optimize the reaction conditions. The analysis results indicate that the reaction temperature has the greatest effect on the adsorption efficiency of vanadium and the influence of experimental factors follows the order: reaction temperature > dosage of glutamic acid to vanadium > reaction time > concentration of H2SO4. The pseudo-second-order model is selected to describe well the adsorption kinetic behavior, and the thermodynamic analysis results indicate that the adsorption process of vanadium is unspontaneous and exothermic. The results will be useful for further applications of glutamic acid, and they provide a bright future for vanadium recovery.

Efficient Removal of Cr (VI) with Biochar and Optimized Parameters by Response Surface Methodology

A highly efficient reduction process of Cr (VI) with biochar was conducted in this paper. The results showed that nearly 100% Cr (VI) was reduced at selected reaction conditions: Dosage of biochar at m (C)/m(Cr) = 3.0, reaction temperature of 90 °C, reaction time of60 min, and concentration of H2SO4 of 20 g/L. The reduction kinetics analysis demonstrated that the reduction of Cr (VI) fitted well with the pseudo-first-order model and the apparent activation energy was calculated to be 40.24 kJ/mol. Response surface methodology confirmed that all of the experimental parameters had a positive effect on the reduction of Cr (VI). The influence of each parameter on the reduction process followed the order: Dosage of biochar>concentration of H2SO4>reaction temperature >reaction time. This paper provides a versatile strategy for the treatment of wastewater containing Cr (VI) and shows a bright tomorrow for wastewater treatment.

Chromium contamination and effect on environmental health and its remediation: A sustainable approaches

Chromium (Cr) is a trace element critical to human health and well-being. In the last few decades, its contamination, especially hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] form in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, has amplified as a result of various anthropogenic activities. Chromium pollution is a significant environmental threat, severely impacting our environment and natural resources, especially water and soil. Excessive exposure could lead to higher levels of accumulation in human and animal tissues, leading to toxic and detrimental health effects. Several studies have shown that chromium is a toxic element that negatively affects plant metabolic activities, hampering crop growth and yield and reducing vegetable and grain quality. Thus, it must be monitored in water, soil, and crop production system. Various useful and practical remediation technologies have been emerging in regulating chromium in water, soil, and other resources. A sustainable remediation approach must be adopted to balance the environment and nature.

Adsorption behavior of Fe (III) in aqueous solution on melamine

This paper focused on the adsorption behavior of Fe (III) in aqueous solution on melamine. The effects of experimental conditions including dosage of melamine, reaction time and reaction temperature were investigated. The results showed that nearly 99% Fe (III) was adsorbed under the optimal conditions: melamine dosage (mole ratio) at n(C₃H₆N₆)/n(Fe) = 3.5:1, reaction time of 60 min and reaction temperature of 90 °C. The optimal processing factors were obtained from response surface methodology and the effects of processing parameters on the removal efficiency of Fe (III) followed the order: mole ratio (n(C₃N₆H₆):n(Fe)) > reaction temperature > reaction time. The adsorption kinetics behavior was fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model. The thermodynamic study showed that the adsorption process was unspontaneous and endothermic. The value of free energy change and standard enthalpy change disclosed that the mechanism of adsorption onto melamine was physisorption. The results will be useful for further applications of system design in the treatment of practical waste effluents.

Reduction behavior of chromium(VI) with oxalic acid in aqueous solution

The direct Cr(VI) reduction process by oxalic acid was conducted. The existence of Cr(VI) in the reaction medium was measured by software Visual MINTEQ and the concentration of Cr(VI) was measured by ICP-OES. The results showed that the Cr(VI) was efficiently reduced by oxalic acid at high reaction temperature and high dosage of oxalic acid. The reduced product, Cr(III), was easily generated stable complex compounds (Cr(HC2O4)3) with oxalate, which displayed a negative effect on the reduction process. The high reaction temperature and high acidic medium could destroy the stable structure of a complex compound to release oxalate, and facilitate the reduction of Cr(VI). Generally, the results showed in this paper provided a versatile strategy for Cr(VI) reduction and exhibited a bright application future for real wastewater treatment.
