Abstract
As the recovery from gait perturbations is coordinatively complex and error-prone, people often adopt anticipatory strategies when the perturbation is expected. These anticipatory strategies act as a first line of defence against potential balance loss. Since age-related changes in the sensory and neuromotor systems could make the recovery from external perturbations more difficult, it is important to understand how older adults implement anticipatory strategies. Therefore, we exposed healthy young (N = 10, 22 ± 1.05 yrs.) and older adults (N = 10, 64.2 ± 6.07 yrs.) to simulated slips on a treadmill with consistent properties and assessed if the reliance on anticipatory control differed between groups. Results showed that for the unperturbed steps in between perturbations, step length decreased and the backward (BW) margin of stability (MOS) increased (i.e., enhanced dynamic stability against backward loss of balance) in the leg that triggered the slip, while step lengths increased and BW MOS decreased in the contralateral leg. This induced step length and BW MOS asymmetry was significantly larger for older adults. When exposed to a series of predictable slips, healthy older adults thus rely more heavily on anticipatory control to proactively accommodate the expected backward loss of balance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most people with Parkinson's disease (PD) walk with a smaller mediolateral base of support (BoS) compared to healthy people, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Reduced trunk motion in people with PD might be related to this narrow-based gait. Here, we study the relationship between trunk motion and narrow-based gait in healthy adults. According to the extrapolated center of mass (XCoM) concept, a decrease in mediolateral XCoM excursion would require a smaller mediolateral BoS to maintain a constant margin of stability (MoS) and remain stable. RESEARCH QUESTION As proof of principle, we assessed whether walking with reduced trunk motion results in a smaller step width in healthy adults, without altering the mediolateral MoS. METHODS Fifteen healthy adults walked on a treadmill at preferred comfortable walking speed in two conditions. First, the 'regular walking' condition without any instructions, and second, the 'reduced trunk motion' condition with the instruction: 'Keep your trunk as still as possible'. Treadmill speed was kept the same in the two conditions. Trunk kinematics, step width, mediolateral XCoM excursion and mediolateral MoS were calculated and compared between the two conditions. RESULTS Walking with the instruction to keep the trunk still significantly reduced trunk kinematics. Walking with reduced trunk motion resulted in significant decreases in step width and mediolateral XCoM excursion, but not in the mediolateral MoS. Furthermore, step width and mediolateral XCoM excursion were strongly correlated during both conditions (r = 0.887 and r = 0.934). SIGNIFICANCE This study shows that walking with reduced trunk motion leads to a gait pattern with a smaller BoS in healthy adults, without altering the mediolateral MoS. Our findings indicate a strong coupling between CoM motion state and the mediolateral BoS. We expect that people with PD who walk narrow-based, have a similar mediolateral MoS as healthy people, which will be further investigated.

Abstract
Beyond classical aspects related to locomotion (biomechanics), it has been hypothesized that walking pattern is influenced by a combination of distinct computations including online sensory/perceptual sampling and the processing of expectations (neuromechanics). Here, we aimed to explore the potential impact of contrasting scenarios ("risky and potentially dangerous" scenario; "safe and comfortable" scenario) on walking pattern in a group of healthy young adults. Firstly, and consistently with previous literature, we confirmed that the scenario influences gait pattern when it is recalled concurrently to participants' walking activity (motor interference). More intriguingly, our main result showed that participants' gait pattern is also influenced by the contextual scenario when it is evoked only before the start of walking activity (motor expectation). This condition was designed to test the impact of expectations (risky scenario vs. safe scenario) on gait pattern, and the stimulation that preceded walking activity served as prior. Noteworthy, we combined statistical and machine learning (Support-Vector Machine classifier) approaches to stratify distinct levels of analyses that explored the multi-facets architecture of walking. In a nutshell, our combined statistical and machine learning analyses converge in suggesting that walking before steps is not just a paradox.

Abstract
Humans' balance recovery responses to gait perturbations are negatively impacted with ageing. Slip and trip events, the main causes preceding falls during walking, are likely to produce severe injuries in older adults. While traditional exercise-based interventions produce inconsistent results in reducing patients' fall rates, perturbation-based balance training (PBT) emerges as a promising task-specific solution towards fall prevention. PBT improves patients' reactive stability and fall-resisting skills through the delivery of unexpected balance perturbations. The adopted perturbation conditions play an important role towards PBT's effectiveness and the acquisition of meaningful sensor data for studying human biomechanical reactions to loss of balance (LOB) events. Hence, this narrative review aims to survey the different methods employed in the scientific literature to provoke artificial slips and trips in healthy adults during treadmill and overground walking. For each type of perturbation, a comprehensive analysis was conducted to identify trends regarding the most adopted perturbation methods, gait phase perturbed, gait speed, perturbed leg, and sensor systems used for data collection. The reliable application of artificial perturbations to mimic real-life LOB events may reduce the gap between laboratory and real-life falls and potentially lead to fall-rate reduction among the elderly community.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The lower extremity may play a crucial role in compensating for gait perturbations. The study aimed to explore the mechanism of perturbation compensation by investigating the gait characteristics and lower extremity joint moment effects in young (YS) and older subjects (OS) during the first recovery gait following slipping (slipping_Rec1) and stumbling (stumbling_Rec1). METHOD An automatic perturbation-triggered program was developed using D-Flow software based on the Gait Real-time Analysis Interactive Lab to induce the two aforementioned perturbations. Marker trajectories and ground reaction forces were recorded from 15 healthy YS (age: 26.53 ± 3.04 years; body height: 1.73 ± 0.07 m; body mass: 66.81 ± 11.44 kg) and 15 healthy OS (age: 68.33 ± 3.29 years; body height: 1.76 ± 0.10 m; body mass: 81.13 ± 13.99 kg). The Human Body Model was used to compute the variables of interest. One-way analysis of variance and independent samples t-test statistical analyses were performed. RESULTS In slipping_Rec1 and stumbling_Rec1, the change in gait pattern was mainly reflected in a significant increase in step width, no alterations in step length and stance/swing ratio were revealed. Based on perturbed task specificity, lower extremity joint moments increased or decreased at specific phases of the gait cycle in both YS and OS in slipping_Rec1 and stumbling_Rec1 compared to normal gait. The two perturbed gaits reflected the respective compensatory requirements for the lower extremity joints, with both sagittal and frontal joint moments producing compensatory effects. The aging effect was not reflected in the gait pattern, but rather in the hip extension moment during the initial stance of slipping_Rec1. CONCLUSIONS Slipping appears to be more demanding for gait recovery than stumbling. Gait perturbation compensatory mechanisms for OS should concentrate on ankle strategy in the frontal plane and counter-rotation strategy around the hip.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Control of dynamic balance in human walking is essential to remain stable and can be parameterized by the margins of stability. While frontal and sagittal plane margins of stability are often studied in parallel, they may covary, where increased stability in one plane could lead to decreased stability in the other. Hypothetically, this negative covariation may lead to critically low lateral stability during step lengthening. RESEARCH QUESTION Is there a relationship between frontal and sagittal plane margins of stability in able-bodied humans, during normal walking and imposed step lengthening? METHODS Fifteen able-bodied adults walked on an instrumented treadmill in a normal walking and a step lengthening condition. During step lengthening, stepping targets were projected onto the treadmill in front of the participant to impose longer step lengths. Covariation between frontal and sagittal plane margins of stability was assessed with linear mixed-effects models for normal walking and step lengthening separately. RESULTS We found a negative covariation between frontal and sagittal plane margins of stability during normal walking, but not during step lengthening. SIGNIFICANCE These results indicate that while a decrease in anterior instability may lead to a decrease in lateral stability during normal walking, able-bodied humans can prevent lateral instability due to this covariation in critical situations, such as step lengthening. These findings improve our understanding of adaptive dynamic balance control during walking in able-bodied humans and may be utilized in further research on gait stability in pathological and aging populations.

Abstract
The arm elevation strategy assists in recovering stability during slips in healthy young and elderly individuals. However, in people with Parkinson's Disease, one of the main motor symptoms affecting the upper limbs is reduced arm swing which intensifies throughout the course of the disease before becoming absent. This holds direct implications for these individuals when encountering slips as the arm elevation strategy is an integral component in the interlimb slip response to restore stability. Arm swing's effect in recovering from slips in people with Parkinson's Disease though remains unexamined. Twenty people with Parkinson's Disease (63.78 ± 8.97 years) walked with restricted and unrestricted arm swing conditions on a dual-belt treadmill where slips were induced on the least and most affected sides. Data were collected on the CAREN Extended System (Motek Medical, Amsterdam, NL). The Margin of Stability, linear and angular trunk velocities, as well as step length, time, and width were calculated. Data were examined during the slipped step and recovery step. The restricted arm swing condition, compared to unrestricted, caused a faster step time during the slipped step. Compared to the most affected leg, the least affected had a wider step width during the slipped step. During the recovery step, the least affected leg had a larger anteroposterior Margin of Stability and longer step time than the most affected. No differences between our arm swing conditions suggests that the normal arm swing in our participants was not more effective at restoring stability after an induced slip compared to when their arm motion was restricted. This may be due to the arm elevation strategy being ineffective in counteracting the slip's backward destabilization in these individuals. Differences between the legs revealed that our participants were asymmetrically impaired in their slip recovery response.
