Preparation and physical characteristics of graphene ceramics

Tailoring Dense, Orientation-Tunable, and Interleavedly Structured Carbon-Based Heat Dissipation Plates

The controllability of the microstructure of a compressed hierarchical building block is essential for optimizing a variety of performance parameters, such as thermal management. However, owing to the strong orientation effect during compression molding, optimizing the alignment of materials perpendicular to the direction of pressure is challenging. Herein, to illustrate the effect of the ordered microstructure on heat dissipation, thermally conductive carbon-based materials are fabricated by tailoring dense, orientation-tunable, and interleaved structures. Vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays (VACNTs) interconnected with graphene films (GF) are prepared as a 3D core-ordered material to fabricate compressed building blocks of O-VA-GF and S-VA-GF. Leveraging the densified interleaved structure offered by VACNTs, the hierarchical O-VA-GF achieves excellent through-plane (41.7 W m^-1 K^-1 ) and in-plane (397.9 W m^-1 K^-1 ) thermal conductivities, outperforming similar composites of S-VA-GF (through-plane: 10.3 W m^-1 K^-1 and in-plane: 240.9 W m^-1 K^-1 ) with horizontally collapsed carbon nanotubes. As heat dissipation plates, these orderly assembled composites yield a 144% and 44% enhancement in the cooling coefficient compared with conventional Si₃ N₄ for cooling high-power light-emitting diode chips.

Effect of Graphene Addition on the Thermal and Persistent Luminescence Properties of Gd2.994Ce0.006Ga3Al2O12 and Gd2.964Ce0.006Dy0.03Ga3Al2O12 Ceramics

The gadolinium, gallium, aluminum garnet doped with cerium and co-doped with dysprosium ions were prepared using sol gel method. The SEM images show that after synthesis, the grains are below 100 nm. The powders were ultrasonically mixed with graphene nanoflakes and ceramics were prepared using the high pressure low temperature sintering technique. A series of the ceramics was prepared using different graphene content. The structure of the samples was examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Raman techniques. The spectroscopic properties were checked using conventional and persistent luminescence spectra measurements. The thermoluminescence glow curves and fading time of persistent luminescence measurements were performed to check how the graphene presence affects the electron traps number and depth. It was found that the addition of graphene improved the thermal conductivity of co-doped samples. This resulted in faster release of deeper traps and an increase in fading of persistent luminescence. The possibility of releasing energy from deep traps without additional stimulation may allow the use in different applications, the matrices and luminescent ions, which so far did not show persistent luminescence at room temperature.

Me-graphane: tailoring the structural and electronic properties of Me-graphene via hydrogenation

Graphene-based materials (GBMs) are a large family of materials that have attracted great interest due to potential applications. In this work, we applied first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) and fully atomistic reactive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the structural and electronic effects of hydrogenation in Me-graphene, a non-zero bandgap GBM composed of both sp2 and sp3-hybridized carbon. Our DFT results show the hydrogenation can tune the electronic properties of Me-graphene significantly. The bandgap varies from 0.64 eV to 2.81 eV in the GGA-PBE approach, passing through metallic ground-states and a narrower bandgap state depending on the hydrogen coverage. The analyses of structural properties and binding energies have shown that all carbon atoms are in sp3 hybridization in hydrogenated Me-graphene with strong and stable C-H bonds, resulting in a boat-like favorable conformation for fully-hydrogenated Me-graphene. Our MD simulations have indicated that the hydrogenation is temperature-dependent for Me-graphene, and the covalent adsorption tends to grow by islands. Those simulations also show that the most favorable site, predicted by our DFT calculations, acts as trigger adsorption for the extensive hydrogenation.
