Removal of radionuclides from acidic solution by activated carbon impregnated with methyl- and carboxy-benzotriazoles

Research on the remediation of cesium pollution by adsorption: Insights from bibliometric analysis

While nuclear energy with zero carbon emissions will continue to occupy an indispensable position in future scenarios for power generation, the proper disposal of nuclear waste is still highly challenging in many countries. Adsorption is currently one of the primary methods used for removal of cesium from wastewater. However, no available literature has systematically summarized advances and outlooks on the adsorptive removal of cesium, and research issues such as relevant adsorption mechanisms remain largely unexplored. In this study, a bibliometric analysis was used to quantitatively analyze 10141 publications in the Web of Science Core Collection that were published from 1900 to 2022. Current publication trends and active countries, most influential authors and institutions, journal distribution, and research hotspots and trends were reviewed and summarized. The results for the conceptual structure and evolution of investigations in this field showed three distinct periods of rapid development in recent decades. The first period concerned the scope, degree, and influences of pollution by cesium and the development of natural adsorbents. The second period included the exploration and verification of adsorption mechanisms, the fabrication and optimization of new materials, and the application of density functional theory for chemical calculations. The third period involved the development of more advanced biodegradable, nanoscale and synthetic materials with great potential for use as adsorbents as well as advances in engineering applications. Notably, the study showed that it is necessary to further enhance application-driven laboratory investigations. Future directions for research were proposed, such as the investigation of complex adsorption mechanisms, development of new materials, and engineering applications of materials developed in the laboratory. The findings will provide valuable insights and serve as a reference for researchers and policymakers as they address the adsorptive remediation of cases of pollution by cesium.

Magnetic nanocomposites based on Zn,Al-LDH intercalated with citric and EDTA groups for the removal of U(vi) from environmental and wastewater: synergistic effect and adsorption mechanism study

The efficient removal of U(vi) ions from contaminated natural waters and wastewaters of industrial processing plants by novel magnetic nanocomposites based on magnetite and Zn,Al-layered double hydroxides intercalated with citric and EDTA groups (Fe3O4/Zn,Al-LDH/Cit and Fe3O4/Zn,Al-LDH/EDTA) was shown. These adsorbents were obtained using co-precipitation and ion-exchange techniques. The infrared spectroscopy confirmed the existence of O-containing groups on the surfaces of Fe3O4/Zn,Al-LDH/Cit and Fe3O4/Zn,Al-LDH/EDTA, which could provide active sites in the interlayer of the adsorbents for the pollutants removal. The intercalation of Zn,Al-LDH with chelating EDTA-groups significantly increased the adsorption capacity toward U(vi) ions (131.22 mg g-1) compared to citric moieties in a wide range of pH (3.5-9.0). The maximum adsorption capacities of U(vi) at pH 7.5 were 81.12 mg g-1 for Fe3O4/Zn,Al-LDH/EDTA and 21.6 mg g-1 for Fe3O4/Zn,Al-LDH/Cit. The higher adsorption capacity of Fe3O4/Zn,Al-LDH/EDTA vs. the citric sample might be explained by high affinity of LDH-supports and high-activity of the chelating groups in formation of the complexes in the interlayer space of the magnetic nanocomposite. The removal of U(vi) by the magnetic nanocomposites occurred due to interlayer complexation and electrostatic interactions. The cations (Na+, K+, Ca2+), HCO3 - and fulvic acid anions being typical for natural waters were practically not affected upon the removal of U(vi) from aqueous media. The adsorption performance of Fe3O4/Zn,Al-LDH/EDTA nanocomposites was evaluated in the analysis of environmental and wastewater samples with recoveries in the range of 95.8-99.9%. This superior intercalation performance of LDH-supports provides simple and low-cost adsorbents, providing a strategy for decontamination of radionuclides from wastewater.

Sorption of 60Co(II) from aqueous solutions onto biosynthesized zinc oxide nanocomposites

Nano ZnO is biosynthesized using Lactobcillus sp. Poly Acrylic acid-co-Acrylonitrile/ZnO, PAACAN/ZnO, and poly Acrylic acid-co-Maleic acid/ZnO, PAACMA/ZnO, nancomposites were synthesized using 60Co γ-rays. PAACAN/ZnO and PAACMA/ZnO nanocomposites were characterized and used as sorbents for 60Co(II) radionuclide. The monolayer adsorption capacities of 60Co(II) onto PAACMA/ZnO and PAACAN/ZnO are 18.235, 7.105 mgg−1, respectively at pH 4.5 and 20 °C. The sorption reaction has a pseudo 2nd order mechanism. 0.1 M EDTA could be used as an eluent for desorption. The desorption efficiencies of 60Co(II) from PAACAN/ZnO and PAACMA/ZnO were 67.51 and 84.85%, respectively. The sorption process is endothermic and spontaneous.

Interaction of glyphosate in matrices of cellulose and diethylaminoethyl cellulose biopolymers: theoretical viewpoint of the adsorption process

Glyphosate is an herbicide widely used in agricultural activities causing contamination of soils and bodies of water and damage to the biodiversity of ecosystems. In this context, the present study aimed to theoretically study the adsorption potential of the biopolymer cellulose (CE) and its diethylaminoethyl cellulose derivative (DEAEC) with the herbicide glyphosate (GLY). Theoretical calculations were performed using the density functional theory. Molecular electrostatic potential and frontier molecular orbital analyses were performed, which allowed identifying the possible sites of interaction of biopolymers that were in the functional groups -OH and O- of cellulose and in the groups -O- and -NH+(CH2CH3)2 of the DEAEC. Reactivity indices chemical softness and hardness showed that both adsorbents could interact with adsorbate. Simulated IR indicated that the interactions could be evinced in experimental measurements by changes in the bands of glyphosate (ν(P = O), δ(P-O-H), δ(C-N-H)) or in the bands of CE and DEAEC (ν(C-O), ν(C-H), ν(N-H)). The binding energies showed that the GLY interacts more effectively with CE than DEAEC. The ΔH prove that all processes are exothermic and the CE-GLY1 interaction showed value of ΔG < 0. The topological results showed a greater number of interactions with electrostatic nature. The results found in the study show that the theoretical data provides useful information to support the use of biopolymers as matrices for glyphosate adsorption or other contaminants.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue Using Zinc Oxide Nanorods Grown on Activated Carbon Fibers

In this work, the synthesis, characterization, and photocatalytic performance of zinc oxide/activated carbon fiber nanocomposites prepared by hydrothermal method were investigated. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NP) were deposited as seeds on porous activated carbon fiber (ACF) substrates. Then, zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO-NR) were successfully grown on the seeds and assembled on the fibers’ surface in various patterns to form ZnO-NR/ACF nanocomposites. The nanocomposites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis. SEM images showed that brush-like and flower-like ZnO-NR patterns were grown uniformly on the ACF surface with sizes depending on the ZnO-NP concentration, growth time, and temperature. The FTIR spectrum confirmed the presence of the major vibration bands, especially the absorption peaks representing the vibration modes of the COOH (C = O and C = C) functional group. Adsorption and photocatalytic activities of the synthesized catalytic adsorbents were compared using methylene blue (MB) as the model pollutant under UV irradiation. ZnO-NR/ACF nanocomposites showed excellent photocatalytic activity (~99% degradation of MB in 2 h) compared with that of bare ZnO-NR and ACF. Additionally, a recycling experiment demonstrated the stability of the catalyst; the catalytic degradation ratio of ZnO-NR/ACF reached more than 90% after five successive runs and possessed strong adsorption capacity and high photocatalytic ability. The enhanced photocatalytic activities may be related to the effects of the relatively high surface area, enhanced UV-light absorption, and decrease of charge carrier recombination resulting from the synergetic adsorption–photocatalytic degradation effect of ZnO and ACF.
