Testing the Minimum System Entropy and the Quantum of Entropy

Experimental and theoretical results about entropy limits for macroscopic and single-particle systems are reviewed. All experiments confirm the minimum system entropy S⩾kln2. We clarify in which cases it is possible to speak about a minimum system entropykln2 and in which cases about a quantum of entropy. Conceptual tensions with the third law of thermodynamics, with the additivity of entropy, with statistical calculations, and with entropy production are resolved. Black hole entropy is surveyed. Claims for smaller system entropy values are shown to contradict the requirement of observability, which, as possibly argued for the first time here, also implies the minimum system entropy kln2. The uncertainty relations involving the Boltzmann constant and the possibility of deriving thermodynamics from the existence of minimum system entropy enable one to speak about a general principle that is valid across nature.

Quantum Mpemba Effect in a Quantum Dot with Reservoirs

We demonstrate the quantum Mpemba effect in a quantum dot coupled to two reservoirs, described by the Anderson model. We show that the system temperatures starting from two different initial values (hot and cold) cross each other at finite time (and thereby reverse their identities; i.e., hot becomes cold and vice versa) to generate thermal quantum Mpemba effect. The slowest relaxation mode believed to play the dominating role in Mpemba effect in Markovian systems does not contribute to such anomalous relaxation in the present model. In this connection, our analytical result provides necessary condition for producing quantum Mpemba effect in the density matrix elements of the quantum dot, as a combined effect of the remaining relaxation modes.

Qubit thermodynamics far from equilibrium: Two perspectives about the nature of heat and work in the quantum regime

Considering an entropy-based division of energy transferred into heat and work, we develop an alternative theoretical framework for the thermodynamic analysis of two-level systems. When comparing these results with those obtained using the standard definitions of these quantities, we observe the appearance of a different term of work, which represents the energy cost of rotating the Bloch vector in the presence of the external field that defines the local Hamiltonian. Additionally, we obtain explicit expressions for the temperature, the heat capacity, and the internal entropy production of the system in both paradigms. In order to illustrate our findings we study, from both perspectives, matter-radiation interaction processes for two different systems.
