Abstract
In urban centers, sewage treatment plants (STPs) serve as foraging and shelter areas for bats; however, they are sources of persistent pollutants that affect the health of these animals. This study aimed to investigate the impact of pollutants from an STP on the health of different species of neotropical bats from different guilds using non-invasive biomarkers. A conservation unit, the Silvania National Forest (SNF), was used as a reference area for comparison purposes. Blood, buccal mucosa, and fur samples were obtained for comet assay, micronucleus test, leukocyte profile, and metal concentration analysis in fur. Our results demonstrated that bats collected at the STP show a higher frequency of genotoxic damage, nuclear abnormalities, and an inflammatory response linked to infection than bats from the SNF. Regarding guilds, frugivores and nectarivores showed more pronounced responses to damage, but insectivores bats also showed relevant responses. While STPs are considered a source of pollutants, other urban sources of contamination likely contributed to these results. Still we encourage further studies using other non-invasive biomarkers, detection analysis of different pollutants in biological matrices, and the use of other wildlife species inserted in urban centers.

Abstract
"Very hot beverage" (>65°C) consumption is an IARC probable carcinogen and may contribute to the African esophageal cancer burden. We conducted community cross-sectional exposure studies of hot beverage consumption in Kenya and Malawi during 2018-2019, aiming to: (i) implement a detailed measurement protocol incorporating three measurements of sip temperature and volume so as to predict each sip's intra-esophageal liquid temperature (IELT); (ii) examine variations by seasonality, drinking venue and age, including children. 246 participants were included, of whom 236 had drink measurements (52 children and 183 adults). Among adults, mean (SD) temperatures at first sip were 67 (9) and 68 (7) °C in Kenya and Malawi respectively, i.e. 58 and almost 70 % of first sips were > 65 °C. In both countries, adults exhibited a protective habit of smaller sips at higher temperatures (mean 11 mL at first sip), whereas the larger middle sip (20 mL) had the highest IELT (45 °C). The highest temperatures were observed in men and for drinks taken in social settings, whereas we did not detect seasonality or associations with other esophageal cancer risk factors. Measurements were difficult to make for 20 % (8/43) of Kenyan children whose drink was cooled by pouring between cups ('poesha'). Where poesha was not practiced, IELTs were lower in children (especially < 10 years) than in adults, owing to a mean of 8 °C cooler first sip temperature, however 20 % of first sips were > 65 °C. If very hot beverage consumption is an esophageal carcinogen, lowering sip temperatures and volumes in East Africa would form important prevention avenues.

Abstract
Micronucleus (MN) assays with buccal cells are at present widely used to investigate occupational exposures to genotoxic carcinogens. This article describes their use for the monitoring of metal exposed workers. We found in total 73 relevant articles, in the majority (97 %) increased MN and/or other nuclear anomalies were reported. Most studies were realized in South East Asia and South America. A variety of different occupations was studied including welders, electroplaters, painters, workers in battery recycling and production, tannery workers, dental technicians, miners, workers in foundries and smelters, and also subjects working in waste recycling, glass, aluminum and steel production. In many investigations the effects increased with the duration of the working period. The quality of individual studies was evaluated with a quality score tool. The number of cells was in most studies sufficient and DNA-specific stains were used. However, many studies have shortcomings, e.g. they focused solely on MN formation and did not evaluate anomalies, which provide additional information about the stability of the genetic material and acute cytotoxic effects. Only 35 % of the investigations contain quantitative information about exposures to metals and other toxicants. In 6 of these studies, correlations were observed between the concentrations of specific metals (As, Pb, Cr, Cd) in body fluids and MN frequencies. Taken together, the available data indicate that the MN assay can be used to detect chromosomal damage in metal exposed groups; furthermore, it enables also comparisons between subgroups differing in regard to their exposure and allows an estimation of the efficiency of protective measures. The exposure of workers to metals is currently controlled with chemical analytical measurements only, MN assays with buccal cells could contribute to further improve the safety at workplaces as they reflect the biological consequences including synergistic and antagonistic interactions between toxicants.

Abstract
Pollution generated by the mining industry can cause harm to wildlife. This study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and mutagenicity in bats environmentally exposed to open pit mining. Thus, 62 bats of the following species, Carollia perspicillata, Glossophaga soricina, Phyllostomus hastatus, and Desmodus rotundus exposed to mining activities (ferronickel) were used in the analysis. The animals were obtained in samplings in July and November of 2021, totaling 8 days of sampling in the field. The results indicated that species differ in the frequency of genotoxic damage between sampling points within the mining landscape. Cytotoxicity was observed by scoring of karyorrhexis, pyknosis and karyolysis. The most captured species, C. perspicillata, showed differences in DNA damage between exposed and unexposed populations, but no differences were observed between males (n = 14) and females (n = 20). G. soricina was also a sensitive species for indicating a high frequency of DNA damages compared to the omnivore P. hastatus. Elements such as Mn, Cr, Pb, and Zn observed in water samples were at high levels in the mining area. We conclude that bats in mining areas are susceptible to increased DNA damage as already identified for other species.

Abstract
Oolong tea is one of the world's most popular non-alcoholic beverages, particularly in coastal Southeast China. Hitherto, epidemiological studies on the association between oolong tea consumption and the risk of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) are very limited. This study aimed to evaluate the potential effect of oolong tea consumption on OSCC risk in Southeast China. From January 2010 to October 2020, face-to-face interviews were conducted for 744 newly diagnosed OSCC patients and 1,029 healthy controls to collect information on demographics, oolong tea consumption behaviors, and other lifestyle factors. Propensity score matching (PSM), inverse probability of treatment weight (IPTW), and stabilized inverse probability of treatment weight (SIPTW) were utilized to minimize confounding effects. Multivariate, conditional, and weighted logistic regression was used to evaluate the associations of oolong tea consumption behaviors with OSCC risk. Participants who drank oolong tea showed a lower risk of OSCC when compared to their non-drink counterparts [PSM population, OR (95%CI): 0.69 (0.49-0.97); SIPTW population, OR (95%CI): 0.74 (0.58-0.94)]. Moreover, the reduced risk was found to be significantly associated with certain tea-drinking habits (consumed amount over 500 mL per day, a duration of <20 years, age at initiation older than 30 years, and warm and moderately concentrated tea). Similar results were yielded in the sensitivity analyses (Multivariate adjustment and the IPTW analysis). Furthermore, subgroup analysis revealed that the negative association of oolong tea drinking with OSCC risk was more evident among those with poor oral hygiene. This study provides supportive evidence that oolong tea consumption may have a potentially beneficial effect in preventing OSCC, especially for those with poor oral hygiene.
