Removal of lead from aqueous solutions using three biosorbents of aquatic origin with the emphasis on the affective factors

Semi-continuous cultivation of EPS-producing marine cyanobacteria: A green biotechnology to remove dissolved metals obtaining metal-organic materials

Given the necessity for bioprocesses scaling-up, the present study aims to explore the potential of three marine cyanobacteria and a consortium, cultivated in semi-continuous mode, as a green approach for i) continuous exopolysaccharide-rich biomass production and ii) removal of positively charged metals (Cu, Ni, Zn) from mono and multi-metallic solutions. To ensure the effectiveness of both cellular and released exopolysaccharides, weekly harvested whole cultures were confined in dialysis tubings. The results revealed that all the tested cyanobacteria have a stronger affinity towards Cu in mono and three-metal systems. Despite the amount of metals removed per gram of biomass decreased with higher biosorbent dosage, the more soluble carbohydrates were produced, the greater was the metal uptake, underscoring the pivotal role of released exopolysaccharides in metal biosorption. According to this, Dactylococcopsis salina 16Som2 showed the highest carbohydrate productivity (142 mg L-1 d-1) and metal uptake (84 mg Cu g-1 biomass) representing a promising candidate for further studies. The semi-continuous cultivation of marine cyanobacteria here reported assures a schedulable production of exopolysaccharide-rich biosorbents with high metal removal and recovery potential, even from multi-metallic solutions, as a step forward in the industrial application of cyanobacteria.

Biosorption of Pb(II) Using Natural and Treated Ardisia compressa K. Leaves: Simulation Framework Extended through the Application of Artificial Neural Network and Genetic Algorithm

This study explored the effects of solution pH, biosorbent dose, contact time, and temperature on the Pb(II) biosorption process of natural and chemically treated leaves of A. compressa K. (Raw-AC and AC-OH, respectively). The results show that the surface characteristics of Raw-AC changed following alkali treatment. FT-IR analysis showed the presence of various functional groups on the surface of the biosorbent, which were binding sites for the Pb(II) biosorption. The nonlinear pseudo-second-order kinetic model was found to be the best fitted to the experimental kinetic data. Adsorption equilibrium data at pH = 2-6, biosorbents dose from 5 to 20 mg/L, and temperature from 300.15 to 333.15 K were adjusted to the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm models. The results show that the adsorption capacity was enhanced with the increase in the solution pH and diminished with the increase in the temperature and biosorbent dose. It was also found that AC-OH is more effective than Raw-AC in removing Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. This was also confirmed using artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms, where it was demonstrated that the improvement was around 57.7%. The nonlinear Langmuir isotherm model was the best fitted, and the maximum adsorption capacities of Raw-AC and AC-OH were 96 mg/g and 170 mg/g, respectively. The removal efficiency of Pb(II) was maintained approximately after three adsorption and desorption cycles using 0.5 M HCl as an eluent. This research delved into the impact of solution pH, biosorbent characteristics, and operational parameters on Pb(II) biosorption, offering valuable insights for engineering education by illustrating the practical application of fundamental chemical and kinetic principles to enhance the design and optimization of sustainable water treatment systems.

Silanized fiberglass modified by carbon dots as novel and impressive adsorbent for aqueous heavy metal ion removal

This work discusses the application of a silanized fiberglass (SFG) modified by carbon dots (CDs) as an effective adsorbent for up-taking some heavy metal ions including lead (Pb²⁺), chromium (Cr³⁺), cadmium (Cd²⁺), cobalt (Co²⁺), and nickel (Ni²⁺) as pollutant in the aqueous solution by batch method. Removal tests were carried out after optimization of pH, contact time, initial concentration of metal ions, and CDs amount. The SFG modified with CDs (CDs-SFG) was applied for the removal of 10 ppm of each metal ion solution after 100 min and the corresponding results showed the removal efficiencies of 100, 93.2, 91.8, 90, and 88.3% for Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cr³⁺, Co²⁺, and Ni²⁺, respectively. The adsorption capacity of CDs-SFG in the metal ion mixed solution was also evaluated, and the results indicated the same trend in the adsorption capacity for metal ions in the mixed solution, though with lower absolute values compared to the single metal solutions. Moreover, the selectivity of this adsorbent for the adsorption of Pb²⁺ was almost twice of other tested metal ions. The regeneration of the CDs-SFG showed that its adsorption capacity after five cycles was reduced about 3.9, 6.0, 6.8, 6.7, and 8.0% for Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cr³⁺, Co²⁺, and Ni²⁺, respectively. Finally, the applicability of the CDs-SFG adsorbent was examined with the analysis of the metal ions in water and wastewater samples.

Eco-Friendly Electroless Template Synthesis of Cu-Based Composite Track-Etched Membranes for Sorption Removal of Lead(II) Ions

This paper reports the synthesis of composite track-etched membranes (TeMs) modified with electrolessly deposited copper microtubules using copper deposition baths based on environmentally friendly and non-toxic reducing agents (ascorbic acid (Asc), glyoxylic acid (Gly), and dimethylamine borane (DMAB)), and comparative testing of their lead(II) ion removal capacity via batch adsorption experiments. The structure and composition of the composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction technique and scanning electron and atomic force microscopies. The optimal conditions for copper electroless plating were determined. The adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which indicates that adsorption is controlled by the chemisorption process. A comparative study was conducted on the applicability of the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption models to define the equilibrium isotherms and the isotherm constants for the prepared composite TeMs. Based on the regression coefficients R², it has been shown that the Freundlich model better describes the experimental data of the composite TeMs on the adsorption of lead(II) ions.

Elevated Adsorption of Lead and Arsenic over Silver Nanoparticles Deposited on Poly(amidoamine) Grafted Carbon Nanotubes

An efficient adsorbent, CNTs-PAMAM-Ag, was prepared by grafting fourth-generation aromatic poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and successive deposition of Ag nanoparticles. The FT-IR, XRD, TEM and XPS results confirmed the successful grafting of PAMAM onto CNTs and deposition of Ag nanoparticles. The absorption efficiency of CNTs-PAMAM-Ag was evaluated by estimating the adsorption of two toxic contaminants in water, viz., Pb(II) and As(III). Using CNTs-PAMAM-Ag, about 99 and 76% of Pb(II) and As(III) adsorption, respectively, were attained within 15 min. The controlling mechanisms for Pb(II) and As(III) adsorption dynamics were revealed by applying pseudo-first and second-order kinetic models. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model followed the adsorption of Pb(II) and As(III). Therefore, the incidence of chemisorption through sharing or exchanging electrons between Pb(II) or As(III) ions and CNTs-PAMAM-Ag could be the rate-controlling step in the adsorption process. Further, the Weber-Morris intraparticle pore diffusion model was employed to find the reaction pathways and the rate-controlling step in the adsorption. It revealed that intraparticle diffusion was not a rate-controlling step in the adsorption of Pb(II) and As(III); instead, it was controlled by both intraparticle diffusion and the boundary layer effect. The adsorption equilibrium was evaluated using the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. The kinetic data of Pb(II) and As(III) adsorption was adequately fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model compared to the Freundlich and Temkin models.

A Review of the Role of Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) in Wastewater Treatment Systems

A review of the characterization and functions of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of microbial aggregates in biological wastewater treatment systems is presented in this paper. EPS represent the complex high-molecular-weight mixture of polymers excreted by microorganisms generated from cell lysis as well as adsorbed inorganic and organic matter from wastewater. EPS exhibit a three-dimensional, gel-like, highly hydrated matrix that facilitates microbial attachment, embedding, and immobilization. EPS play multiple roles in containments removal, and the main components of EPS crucially influence the properties of microbial aggregates, such as adsorption ability, stability, and formation capacity. Moreover, EPS are important to sludge bioflocculation, settleability, and dewatering properties and could be used as carbon and energy sources in wastewater treatment. However, due to the complex structure of EPS, related knowledge is incomplete, and further research is necessary to understand fully the precise roles in biological treatment processes.

Facile Preparation and Analytical Utility of ZnO/Date Palm Fiber Nanocomposites in Lead Removal from Environmental Water Samples

This study reports a facile approach for preparing low-cost, eco-friendly nanocomposites of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) and date palm tree fiber (DPF) as a biomass sorbent. The hypothesis of this research work is the formation of an outstanding adsorbent based on the date palm fiber and ZnO nanoparticles. ZnO NP/DPF nanocomposites were synthesized by mixing the synthesized ZnO NPs and DPF in different mass ratios and evaluating their efficacy in adsorbing Pb2+ from aqueous solutions. The structure and surface morphology of the developed ZnO NP/DPF nanocomposite were critically characterized by XRD, FESEM, and TEM techniques. Compared to ZnO NPs, the ZnO NP/DPF nanocomposites displayed significantly enhanced Pb2+ uptake. Pb2+ adsorption was confirmed via various isotherm and kinetic models and thermodynamics. The computed Langmuir sorption capacity (qm) was found to be 88.76 mg/g (R2 > 0.998), and the pseudo-second-order R2 > 0.999 model was most appropriate for describing Pb2+ adsorption. Impregnating the biomass with ZnO NPs enhanced the spontaneity of the process, and the value (−56.55 kJ/mol) of ΔH displayed the exothermic characteristics of Pb2+ retention. Only the loaded ZnO NP/DPF achieved the removal of a high percentage (84.92%) of Pb2+ from the environmental water sample (seawater). This finding suggests the use of ZnO NP/DPF nanocomposites for removing heavy metals from environmental water samples to purify the samples.

Effective removal of Pb(II) ions using piperazine-modified magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposite; optimization by response surface methodology

In this research, the piperazine-modified magnetic graphene oxide (Pip@MGO) nanocomposite was synthesized and utilized as a nano-adsorbent for the removal of Pb(II) ions from environmental water and wastewater samples. The physicochemical properties of Pip@MGO nanocomposite was characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), Vibrating Sample Magnetometery (VSM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis. In this method, the batch removal process were designed by response surface methodology (RSM) based on a central composite design (CCD) model. The results indicated that the highest efficiency of Pb(II) removal was obtained from the quadratic model under optimum conditions of prominent parameters (initial pH 6.0, adsorbent dosage 7 mg, initial concentration of lead 15 mg L⁻¹ and contact time 27.5 min). Adsorption data showed that lead ions uptake on Pip@MGO nanocomposite followed the Langmuir isotherm model equation and pseudo-second order kinetic model. High adsorption capacity (558.2 mg g⁻¹) and easy magnetic separation capability showed that the synthesized Pip@MGO nanocomposite has great potential for the removal of Pb(II) ions from contaminated wastewaters.
