Strong delayed negative feedback

In this paper, we analyze the strong feedback limit of two negative feedback schemes which have proven to be efficient for many biological processes (protein synthesis, immune responses, breathing disorders). In this limit, the nonlinear delayed feedback function can be reduced to a function with a threshold nonlinearity. This will considerably help analytical and numerical studies of networks exhibiting different topologies. Mathematically, we compare the bifurcation diagrams for both the delayed and non-delayed feedback functions and show that Hopf classical theory needs to be revisited in the strong feedback limit.

Connectome-based prediction of functional impairment in experimental stroke models

Experimental rat models of stroke and hemorrhage are important tools to investigate cerebrovascular disease pathophysiology mechanisms, yet how significant patterns of functional impairment induced in various models of stroke are related to changes in connectivity at the level of neuronal populations and mesoscopic parcellations of rat brains remain unresolved. To address this gap in knowledge, we employed two middle cerebral artery occlusion models and one intracerebral hemorrhage model with variant extent and location of neuronal dysfunction. Motor and spatial memory function was assessed and the level of hippocampal activation via Fos immunohistochemistry. Contribution of connectivity change to functional impairment was analyzed for connection similarities, graph distances and spatial distances as well as the importance of regions in terms of network architecture based on the neuroVIISAS rat connectome. We found that functional impairment correlated with not only the extent but also the locations of the injury among the models. In addition, via coactivation analysis in dynamic rat brain models, we found that lesioned regions led to stronger coactivations with motor function and spatial learning regions than with other unaffected regions of the connectome. Dynamic modeling with the weighted bilateral connectome detected changes in signal propagation in the remote hippocampus in all 3 stroke types, predicting the extent of hippocampal hypoactivation and impairment in spatial learning and memory function. Our study provides a comprehensive analytical framework in predictive identification of remote regions not directly altered by stroke events and their functional implication.

Adaptive Coexistence of Synchronization and Anti-Synchronization for a Class of Switched Chaotic Systems

This paper addresses the problem of coexistence of synchronization and anti-synchronization (CSAS) for a class of switched chaotic systems by adaptive control method, where the switched system is realized by unified chaotic systems under arbitrary switching signal. Firstly, necessary and sufficient conditions for the CSAS of the chaotic systems are proposed from two perspectives, one is by analyzing the parity of the system expression, and the other is by decomposing the system. Secondly, according to the obtained necessary and sufficient conditions, two algorithms are given to search the synchronization variables and anti-synchronization variables in the chaotic systems. Thirdly, the CSAS of the switched chaotic system can be achieved by a designed adaptive global controller with only one input channel under the arbitrary switching signal. Finally, the numerical simulation results verify the validity and effectiveness of the method we obtained.

Lag Synchronization of Noisy and Nonnoisy Multiple Neurobiological Coupled FitzHugh–Nagumo Networks with and without Delayed Coupling

This paper presents a methodology for synchronizing noisy and nonnoisy multiple coupled neurobiological FitzHugh–Nagumo (FHN) drive and slave neural networks with and without delayed coupling, under external electrical stimulation (EES), external disturbance, and variable parameters for each state of both FHN networks. Each network of neurons was configured by considering all aspects of real neurons communications in the brain, i.e., synapse and gap junctions. Novel adaptive control laws were developed and proposed that guarantee the synchronization of FHN neural networks in different configurations. The Lyapunov stability theory was utilized to analytically derive the sufficient conditions that ensure the synchronization of the FHN networks. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed control laws were shown through different numerical simulations.

A New Memristive Neuron Map Model and Its Network’s Dynamics under Electrochemical Coupling

A memristor is a vital circuit element that can mimic biological synapses. This paper proposes the memristive version of a recently proposed map neuron model based on the phase space. The dynamic of the memristive map model is investigated by using bifurcation and Lyapunov exponents’ diagrams. The results prove that the memristive map can present different behaviors such as spiking, periodic bursting, and chaotic bursting. Then, a ring network is constructed by hybrid electrical and chemical synapses, and the memristive neuron models are used to describe the nodes. The collective behavior of the network is studied. It is observed that chemical coupling plays a crucial role in synchronization. Different kinds of synchronization, such as imperfect synchronization, complete synchronization, solitary state, two-cluster synchronization, chimera, and nonstationary chimera, are identified by varying the coupling strengths.

A Frequency Domain Analysis of the Excitability and Bifurcations of the FitzHugh-Nagumo Neuron Model

The dynamics of neurons consist of oscillating patterns of a membrane potential that underpin the operation of biological intelligence. The FitzHugh-Nagumo (FHN) model for neuron excitability generates rich dynamical regimes with a simpler mathematical structure than the Hodgkin-Huxley model. Because neurons can be understood in terms of electrical and electrochemical methods, here we apply the analysis of the impedance response to obtain the characteristic spectra and their evolution as a function of applied voltage. We convert the two nonlinear differential equations of FHN into an equivalent circuit model, classify the different impedance spectra, and calculate the corresponding trajectories in the phase plane of the variables. In analogy to the field of electrochemical oscillators, impedance spectroscopy detects the Hopf bifurcations and the spiking regimes. We show that a neuron element needs three essential internal components: capacitor, inductor, and negative differential resistance. The method supports the fabrication of memristor-based artificial neural networks.

An adaptive approach to machine learning for compact particle accelerators

Machine learning (ML) tools are able to learn relationships between the inputs and outputs of large complex systems directly from data. However, for time-varying systems, the predictive capabilities of ML tools degrade if the systems are no longer accurately represented by the data with which the ML models were trained. For complex systems, re-training is only possible if the changes are slow relative to the rate at which large numbers of new input-output training data can be non-invasively recorded. In this work, we present an approach to deep learning for time-varying systems that does not require re-training, but uses instead an adaptive feedback in the architecture of deep convolutional neural networks (CNN). The feedback is based only on available system output measurements and is applied in the encoded low-dimensional dense layers of the encoder-decoder CNNs. First, we develop an inverse model of a complex accelerator system to map output beam measurements to input beam distributions, while both the accelerator components and the unknown input beam distribution vary rapidly with time. We then demonstrate our method on experimental measurements of the input and output beam distributions of the HiRES ultra-fast electron diffraction (UED) beam line at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and showcase its ability for automatic tracking of the time varying photocathode quantum efficiency map. Our method can be successfully used to aid both physics and ML-based surrogate online models to provide non-invasive beam diagnostics.
