Superior Attentional Efficiency of Auditory Cue via the Ventral Auditory-thalamic Pathway

Auditory commands are often executed more efficiently than visual commands. However, empirical evidence on the underlying behavioral and neural mechanisms remains scarce. In two experiments, we manipulated the delivery modality of informative cues and the prediction violation effect and found consistently enhanced RT benefits for the matched auditory cues compared with the matched visual cues. At the neural level, when the bottom-up perceptual input matched the prior prediction induced by the auditory cue, the auditory-thalamic pathway was significantly activated. Moreover, the stronger the auditory-thalamic connectivity, the higher the behavioral benefits of the matched auditory cue. When the bottom-up input violated the prior prediction induced by the auditory cue, the ventral auditory pathway was specifically involved. Moreover, the stronger the ventral auditory-prefrontal connectivity, the larger the behavioral costs caused by the violation of the auditory cue. In addition, the dorsal frontoparietal network showed a supramodal function in reacting to the violation of informative cues irrespective of the delivery modality of the cue. Taken together, the results reveal novel behavioral and neural evidence that the superior efficiency of the auditory cue is twofold: The auditory-thalamic pathway is associated with improvements in task performance when the bottom-up input matches the auditory cue, whereas the ventral auditory-prefrontal pathway is involved when the auditory cue is violated.

Fate of the second task in dual-task interference is associated with sensory system interactions with default-mode network

Psychological refractory period (PRP) effect refers to the delay in responding to the second of two tasks occurring in rapid succession. While all the major models of PRP highlight the importance of the frontoparietal control network (FPCN) in prioritizing the neural processing of the first task, the fate of the second task remains poorly understood. Here, we provide novel neural evidence on how the functional connectivity between sensory systems and the default-mode network (DMN) suspends the neural processing of the second task to ensure the efficient completion of the first task in dual-task situation. In a cross-modal PRP paradigm, a visual task could either precede or follow an auditory task. The DMN was generally deactivated during task performance and selectively coupled with the sensory system underlying the second task subjected to the PRP effect. Specifically, the DMN showed neural coupling with the auditory system when the auditory task came after the visual task, and with the visual system vice versa. More critically, the strength of the DMN-Sensory coupling correlated negatively with the size of the PRP effect: the stronger the coupling, the shorter the PRP. Therefore, rather than being detrimental to the dual-task performance, temporary suspension of the second task, via the DMN-Sensory coupling, surprisingly guaranteed the efficient completion of the first task by reducing the interference from the second task. Accordingly, the entry and processing of the second stimuli in the central executive system were speeded up as well.

Optimizing Reaction Time in Relation to Manual and Foot Laterality in Children Using the Fitlight Technological Systems

The purpose of the study was to design and implement, in the physical and sports education process and in the motor evaluation process, a program of exercises and specific tests to optimize reaction time by using the Fitlight technological systems in relation to the manual and foot laterality of the pupils and identification of gender differences regarding the development of reaction speed. The study included 231 pupils, between 10 and 11 years old, who were divided into two groups according to gender, as follows: the male sample included 109 (97.32%) subjects, and the female sample included 103 (94.45%) participants. All subjects were identified with right manual and foot laterality. Both samples performed a specific exercise program to optimize reaction time in relation to manual and foot laterality by using Fitlight technologies. In the study, four tests were applied in order to evaluate reaction times using Fitlight, two in relation to the manual laterality and two with foot laterality, and the results were statistically processed with IBM SPPS Statistic 24 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Through the comparative analysis of the samples and the progress aimed at optimizing the reaction time specific to our study, it was found that the female sample recorded greater progress at the level of manual laterality, both for the right hand and for the left one, while the sample of boys recorded significant progress in terms of improving reaction time at the level of right and left foot laterality. At the foot laterality level, the results for the executions with the right foot were better in the simple test with four Fitlight spotlights in a line, and for the complex test, with eight Fitlight spotlights in a square, the results were better in the executions with the left foot. This reveals the fact that the greater the execution complexity, the better the motor prevalence on the left side.
