The influence of active carbon contaminants on the ozonation mechanism interpretation

Optimization and Modeling of Cr (VI) Removal from Tannery Wastewater onto Activated Carbon Prepared from Coffee Husk and Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4) as Activating Agent by Using Central Composite Design (CCD)

The primary goal of this research is to lower the hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) concentration that has occurred from the growth of the tannery industry. As a result, the potential for heavy metal concentration is increasing day by day. Industrial effluent containing Cr (VI) contributes significantly to water pollution. Chromium hexavalent ion (Cr (VI)) in wastewater is extremely hazardous to the environment. It is critical to address such a condition using activated carbon derived from biomass. Adsorption is one of the most successful methods for removing hexavalent chromium from wastewater. Treated wastewater has no substantial environmental contamination consequences. The ash content, moisture content, volatile matter content, and fixed carbon content of wet coffee husk were 3.51, 10.85, 68.33, and 17.31, respectively. The physicochemical properties of coffee husk-based activated carbon (CHBAC) obtained during experimentation were pH, porosity, the yield of CHBAC, bulk density, point of zero charges, and specific surface area of 5.2, 58.4 percent, 60.1 percent, 0.71 g/mL, 4.19, and 1396 m2/g, respectively, indicating that CHBAC has a higher capacity as an adsorbent medium. For optimization purposes, the parameters ranged from pH (0.3–3.7), dose (2.3–5.7) $g$ , and contact time (0.3–3.7) hr. The quadratic models were chosen for optimization, and the $p$ value for the model was significant since it was less than 0.05, but the lack of fit model was inconsequential because it was more than 0.05. The optimum adsorption obtained with numerical optimization of Cr (VI) was 97.65 percent. This was obtained at a pH of 1.926, a dose of 4.209 g/L, and a contact time of 2.101 hours. This result was observed at a pH of 1.93, a dosage of 4.2 g/L, and a contact duration of 2.1 hours. The desirability obtained during numerical optimization was 1. Coffee husk-based activated carbon has a bigger surface area, and it has a stronger ability to absorb hexavalent chromium from tannery wastewater effluents.

Degradation of phenol by ball-milled activated carbon (ACBM) activated dual oxidant (persulfate/calcium peroxide) system: Effect of preadsorption and sequential injection

This study explored pre-adsorption and sequential injection of dual oxidant (DuOx) of persulfate (PS) and calcium peroxide (CP) for phenol degradation in an aqueous solution. Ball-milled activated carbon (AC_BM) was used as the catalyst in the following systems: pre-adsorption and sequential injection of PS and CP (AC_BM + PS + CP), pre-adsorption and simultaneous injection of PS and CP (AC_BM + PS/CP), simultaneous injection of AC_BM, PS, and CP (AC_BM/PS/CP), simultaneous injection of AC_BM and PS (AC_BM/PS), and simultaneous injection of AC_BM and CP (AC_BM/CP). The AC_BM had a larger specific surface area, more graphitic structures, and more defects. Moreover, it showed better phenol removal when introduced simultaneously with PS and CP. The phenol removal was most the efficient in AC_BM + PS + CP (98.8%) with a near-neutral final pH, followed by AC_BM + PS/CP, AC_BM/PS, AC_BM/PS/CP, and AC_BM/CP. This indicates that pre-adsorption and separate injection of PS and CP were the key strategy for improved performance and maintained favorable pH for the activation of PS and CP. The dual oxidant system (PS/CP) is superior to single oxidant systems (PS or CP). Scavenger experiments and the electron spin resonance spectra (ESR) demonstrated that non-radical species (¹O₂) were dominantly involved in AC_BM + PS + CP, but radical species (HO^•, SO₄^•-) also contributed. HCO₃^- and HPO₄^2- inhibited phenol degradation in AC_BM + PS + CP, whereas Cl^- and HA had negligible effects. The AC_BM + PS + CP showed high total organic carbon removal and AC_BM was recyclable with a slight decrease in activity. This work is important as it provides a detailed insight into the strategy of pre-adsorption and sequential injection of dual oxidants for a practical and cost-effective method of groundwater remediation.

Ozone Catalytic Oxidation for Gaseous Dimethyl Sulfide Removal by Using Vacuum-Ultra-Violet Lamp and Impregnated Activated Carbon

Gaseous sulfur compounds are emitted from many facilities, such as wastewater facilities or biomass power plants, due to the decay of organic compounds. Gaseous dimethyl sulfide removal by ozone catalytic oxidation was investigated in this study. A Vacuum-Ultra-Violet (VUV) xenon excimer lamp of 172 nm was used for ozone generation without NOx generation, and activated carbon impregnated with iodic acid and H2SO4 was utilized as a catalyst. Performance assessment of dimethyl sulfide removal ability was carried out by a dynamic adsorption experiment. Empty-Bed-Contact-Time (EBCT), superficial velocity, concentration of dimethyl sulfide, temperature and humidity were set at 0.48 s, 0.15 m/s, 3.0 ppm, 25 °C and 45%, respectively. Without ozone addition, the adsorption capacity of impregnated activated carbon was 0.01 kg/kg. When ozone of 7.5 ppm was added, the adsorption capacity of impregnated activated carbon was increased to 0.15 kg/kg. Methane sulfonic acid, a reaction product of dimethyl sulfide and ozone, was detected from the activated carbon. The results suggest that the VUV and activated carbon impregnated with iodic acid and H2SO4 are workable for ozone catalytic oxidation for gas treatments.
