Description of larval morphology and phylogenetic relationships of Heterotemna tenuicornis (Silphidae)

Uloma (Uloma) intricornicula Liu, Ren & Wang, 2007 (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae, Ulomini): Descriptions of the larva and pupa and new distributional records

Background

The genus Uloma Dejean, 1821 (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae, Ulomini) comprises more than 200 species and subspecies worldwide, 37 of which are recorded from China. However, the morphology of the immature stages of Chinese Uloma have been poorly documented. Up to now, larva and pupa descriptions are available for only one species, Uloma (Uloma) metogana Ren, 2004.

New information

The larva and pupa of Uloma (Uloma) intricornicula Liu, Ren & Wang, 2007, from southern China, are described and illustrated for the first time and are compared with those of U. (U.) metogana Ren, 2004. Differences between male and female pupae of this species are highlighted. New distributional data for U. (U.) intricornicula are also provided. Finally, 13 Uloma species from China are formally assigned to the nominated subgenus.

The larval, pupal and mitogenomic characteristics of Agrilusadelphinus Kerremans, 1895 (Coleoptera, Buprestidae) from China

In this study, the larva and pupa of Agrilusadelphinus are described and illustrated. DNA barcoding (COI gene) was used to associate the larval and pupal stages with adults based on the maximum-likelihood method. In the resulting phylogenetic tree, species from the same species-group were found to be clustered on a branch with high support value. To better understand A.adelphinus, the complete mitochondrial genome of this species was also sequenced and annotated. Comparing this genome to the known mitogenomes of Agrilus species, the newly sequenced genome is shorter, with 15,732 bp. However, its whole mitogenome composition and gene orientation were consistent with that of most species of Buprestidae. In the mitogenome of A.adelphinus, the ATGATAG sequence was observed between ATP8 and ATP6, which is ATGATAA in other insect mitogenomes. Leu2, Phe, Ile, Gly, and Ser2 were the five most frequently encoded amino acids. The results further prove that DNA barcoding can remove the limitation of traditional taxonomy which cannot identify to species all developmental stages. This study also provides valuable molecular and morphological data for species identification and phylogenetic analyses of the genus Agrilus.

Integrative taxonomy and species distribution models of the genus Diamesus Hope, 1840 (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Silphinae)

Integrative taxonomy of Diamesus Hope, 1840 (Coleoptera: Silphinae) is presented. Adults of D. bimaculatus Portevin, 1914 (endemic to Taiwan) and D. osculans (Vigors, 1825) (widely distributed from northern India to Australia) are redescribed, keyed and figured, including characters of the male and female genitalia of both species. Variation in elytral maculation in D. osculans is discussed and illustrated. The absence of diagnostic differences of D. osculans var. reductus Pic, 1917 from D. osculans is discussed, and the former name is confirmed as a junior subjective synonym of D. osculans. Types of all three names available were studied; a lectotype and paralectotypes are designated for the name D. osculans var. bimaculatus Portevin, 1914. Molecular phylogenetic analysis confirms the genus Diamesus is sister group to the genus Necrodes Leach, 1815, and D. osculans and D. bimaculatus are two, well supported clades. Detailed data on the distribution of D. bimaculatus and D. osculans are presented and mapped. Species distribution models for both species were created and interpreted. Diamesus osculans is reported for the first time from India: Uttarakhand, China: Anhui, Hainan, Hunan, Jiangxi, Shaanxi and Zhejiang Provinces, and Australia: Victoria; it is also recently confirmed from Taiwan, being sympatric in distribution there with D. bimaculatus. Available data on the ecology and seasonality of both species of Diamesus are also discussed.
