Improved procedure for electro-spinning and carbonisation of neat solvent-fractionated softwood Kraft lignin

Fiber Melt Spinning and Thermo-Stabilization of Para-Rubber Wood Lignin: An Approach for Fully Biomass Precursor Preparation

Para-rubber wood (PRW) lignin, extracted from agricultural waste, was successfully melt-spun to fibers and thermo-stabilized without employing auxiliary additives. 31P NMR analysis revealed that PRW-lignin contained mainly a syringyl unit of phenolic C5-substituted OH group, which enabled melt flow during fiber spinning, as well as a guaiacyl unit which offered the ability to cross-link during thermo-stabilization. Thermo-stabilized fibers with no fusion were achieved at 250 °C with the heating rate of 0.1 °C/min. Structural changes in the fibers during stabilization were systematically investigated using FTIR and XPS analyses. From the results, changes in the intensities of characteristic bands relating to C-H stretching, aromatic C-H stretching, and C=O stretching indicated structural changes of lignin toward aromaticity via oxidation reactions. XPS analysis of the fibers carbonized at 900, 1000, and 1200 °C revealed an increase in carbon content from 72 to 87 wt %. and a decrease in oxygen content from 28 to 13 wt %. with the increasing carbonization temperature. The weight loss of carbonized fibers was in the range of 73.6 to 88.7%. The high weight loss of fibers carbonized at 1200 °C was explained partly due to the thermal decomposition of disordered carbon. The tensile strength and modulus of carbonized fibers were 163.0 and 275.1 MPa, respectively. This study demonstrates an approach to prepare a fully biomass precursor fiber and contributes to the exploration of the potential use of lignin from biomass waste.

Single-Solvent Fractionation and Electro-Spinning Neat Softwood Kraft Lignin

This paper reports on the production of electro-spun nanofibers from softwood Kraft lignin without the need for polymer blending and/or chemical modification. Commercially available softwood Kraft lignin was fractionated using acetone. The acetone-soluble lignin (AcSL) had an ash content of 0.06 wt %, a weight average molecular weight of 4250 g·mol-1 along with the polydispersity index of 1.73. The corresponding values for as-received lignin (ARL) were 1.20 wt %, 6000 g·mol-1, and 2.22, respectively. The AcS was dissolved in a binary solvent consisting of acetone, and dimethyl sulfoxide (2:1, v/v) was selected for dissolving the AcSL. Conventional and custom-designed grounded electrode configurations were used to produce electro-spun neat lignin fibers that were randomly oriented or highly aligned, respectively. The diameter of the electro-spun fibers ranged from 1.12 to 1.46 μm. After vacuum drying at 140 °C for 6 h to remove the solvents and oxidation at 250 °C, the fibers were carbonized at 1000, 1200, and 1500 °C for 1 h. The carbonized fibers were unfused and void-free with an average diameter of 500 nm. Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and image analysis were used to characterize the carbonized fibers.

Continuously processing waste lignin into high-value carbon nanotube fibers

High value utilization of renewable biomass materials is of great significance to the sustainable development of human beings. For example, because biomass contains large amounts of carbon, they are ideal candidates for the preparation of carbon nanotube fibers. However, continuous preparation of such fibers using biomass as carbon source remains a huge challenge due to the complex chemical structure of the precursors. Here, we realize continuous preparation of high-performance carbon nanotube fibers from lignin by solvent dispersion, high-temperature pyrolysis, catalytic synthesis, and assembly. The fibers exhibit a tensile strength of 1.33 GPa and an electrical conductivity of 1.19 × 10⁵S m^-1, superior to that of most biomass-derived carbon materials to date. More importantly, we achieve continuous production rate of 120 m h^-1. Our preparation method is extendable to other biomass materials and will greatly promote the high value application of biomass in a wide range of fields.

Design of Robust FEP Porous Ultrafiltration Membranes by Electrospinning-Sintered Technology

Perfluoropolymer membranes are widely used because of their good environmental adaptability. Herein, the ultrafine fibrous FEP porous membranes were fabricated with electrospinning-sintered technology. The effects of PVA content and sintering temperature on the fabricated membranes’ morphologies and properties were investigated. The results indicate that a kind of dimensionally stable network structure was formed in the obtained ultrafine fibrous FEP porous membranes after sintering the nascent ultrafine fibrous FEP/PVA membranes. The optimal sintering conditions were obtained by comparing the membranes’ performance in terms of membrane morphology, hydrophobicity, mechanical strength, and porosity. When the sintering temperature was 300 °C for 10 min, the porosity, water contact angle, and liquid entry pressure of the membrane were 62.7%, 124.2° ± 2.1°, and 0.18 MPa, respectively. Moreover, the ultrafine fibrous FEP porous membrane at the optimal sintering conditions was tested in vacuum membrane distillation with a permeate flux of 15.1 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹ and a salt rejection of 97.99%. Consequently, the ultrafine fibrous FEP porous membrane might be applied in the seawater desalination field.

Electro-spinning of highly-aligned polyacrylonitrile nano-fibres with continuous spooling

This paper reports on a new configuration for producing highly-aligned electro-spun fibres that can be produced on a static substrate or one where it is hauled off and spooled continuously to enable the production of continuous lengths. The fixture consists of a Vee-shaped polytetrafluorethylene shield at 60° with a 1 cm wide integral rectangular base that is mounted on a copper disk with a 10 cm diameter. Specified concentrations of polyacrylonitrile in dimethyl sulfoxide were electro-spun on to a strip of cellulose paper. In the static setup, approximately 91% of the fibres were deposited to within 3°. When the spooling rig was used, a tape of the cellulose paper was hauled off at 0.07 mm/min, 78% of the fibres were aligned to within 3°. Simulations of the conventional and Vee-shield electro-spinning setups were undertaken and they provided corroboration for the experimental observations with regard to the mechanism responsible for fibre alignment. The feasibility of using this technique to produce 0°/- 45°/+ 45° stacked layers of aligned fibre preform is demonstrated.
