Challenges of Green Transition in Polymer Production: Applications in Zero Energy Innovations and Hydrogen Storage

The green transition in the sustainable production and processing of polymers poses multifaceted challenges that demand integral comprehensive solutions. Specific problems of presences of toxic trace elements are often missed and this prevents shifting towards eco-friendly alternatives. Therefore, substantial research and the development of novel approaches is needed to discover and implement innovative, sustainable production materials and methods. This paper is focused on the most vital problems of the green transition from the aspect of establishing universally accepted criteria for the characterization and classification of eco-friendly polymers, which is essential to ensuring transparency and trust among consumers. Additionally, the recycling infrastructure needs substantial improvement to manage the end-of-life stage of polymer products effectively. Moreover, the lack of standardized regulations and certifications for sustainable polymers adds to the complexity of this problem. In this paper we propose solutions from the aspect of standardization protocols for the characterization of polymers foreseen as materials that should be used in Zero Energy Innovations in Hydrogen Storage. The role model standards originate from eco-labeling procedures for materials that come into direct or prolonged contact with human skin, and that are monitored by different methods and testing procedures. In conclusion, the challenges of transitioning to green practices in polymer production and processing demands a concerted effort from experts in the field which need to emphasize the problems of the analysis of toxic ultra trace and trace impurities in samples that will be used in hydrogen storage, as trace impurities may cause terrific obstacles due to their decreasing the safety of materials. Overcoming these obstacles requires the development and application of current state-of-the-art methodologies for monitoring the quality of polymers during their recycling, processing, and using, as well as the development of other technological innovations, financial initiatives, and a collective commitment to fostering a sustainable and environmentally responsible future for the polymer industry and innovations in the field of zero energy applications.

Changes in the Optical Properties of Rubber Exposed to High-Pressure Hydrogen Using Pulsed Terahertz Waves

In this study, we investigated how high-temperature, high-pressure hydrogen affects the optical properties of three kinds of sealing rubber (chloroprene rubber, ethylene propylene diene monomer, and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber) using pulsed terahertz waves. The optical properties of the rubber samples were analyzed before and after exposure to hydrogen (80 °C and 200 bar) for 72 h. The results showed that the terahertz waves had a shorter time delay and a lower signal intensity for all rubber types. The exposure response intensity, refractive index, and absorption rate also changed in the frequency domain. Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used for comparison, and a few peak shifts were observed. However, the Raman spectra had low signal quality, and the laser damaged the specimen. The study demonstrates that terahertz waves can be used as a non-contact non-destructive testing technique to evaluate the changes in sealing rubbers after hydrogen exposure.

Investigation of Physical and Mechanical Characteristics of Rubber Materials Exposed to High-Pressure Hydrogen

Rubber materials play a key role in preventing hydrogen gas leakage in high-pressure hydrogen facilities. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate rubber materials exposed to high-pressure hydrogen to ensure operational safety. In this study, permeation, volume swelling, hydrogen content, and mechanical characteristics of acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), and fluorocarbon (FKM) samples exposed to pressures of 35 and 70 MPa were investigated. The results showed that the volume recovery and hydrogen desorption behavior of EPDM with the highest permeation were fast whereas those of FKM with the lowest permeation were slow. The volume of NBR with the highest hydrogen content expanded after decompression. In contrast, FKM swelled the most despite having the lowest hydrogen content. After exposure to high-pressure hydrogen, the compression set (CS) slightly increased due to internal cracks, but the tensile strength decreased significantly with increasing pressure despite the absence of cracks in the fracture area of all tensile specimens. It was concluded that the decrease in tensile strength is closely related to the volume increase because of the relationship between the relative true strength and the volume ratio.

Effect of the High-Pressure Hydrogen Gas Exposure in the Silica-Filled EPDM Sealing Composites with Different Silica Content

With the increasing interest in hydrogen energy, the stability of hydrogen storage facilities and components is emphasized. In this study, we analyzed the effect of high-pressure hydrogen gas treatment in silica-filled EPDM composites with different silica contents. In detail, cure characteristics, crosslink density, mechanical properties, and hydrogen permeation properties were investigated. Results showed that material volume, remaining hydrogen content, and mechanical properties were changed after 96.3 MPa hydrogen gas exposure. With an increase in the silica content, the crosslink density and mechanical properties increased, but hydrogen permeability was decreased. After treatment, high-silica-content composites showed lower volume change than low-silica-content composites. The crack damage due to the decompression caused a decrease in mechanical properties, but high silica content can inhibit the reduction in mechanical properties. In particular, EPDM/silica composites with a silica content of above 60 phr exhibited excellent resistance to hydrogen gas, as no change in their physical and mechanical properties was observed.

Volume Dependence of Hydrogen Diffusion for Sorption and Desorption Processes in Cylindrical-Shaped Polymers

In the actual application of gas transport properties under high pressure, the important factors are sample size dependence and permeation efficiency, related to gas sorption. With a modified volumetric analysis technique, we firstly measured the overall diffusion properties and equilibrium times for reaching the saturation of hydrogen content in both hydrogen sorption and desorption processes. The measured parameters of total uptake (C_∞), total desorbed content (C₀), diffusion coefficient in sorption (D_s), diffusion coefficient in desorption (D_d), sorption equilibrium time (t_s) and desorption equilibrium time (t_d) of hydrogen in two polymers were determined relative to the diameter and thickness of the cylindrical-shaped polymers in the two processes. C_∞ and C₀ did not demonstrate an appreciable volume dependence for all polymers. The identical values of C_∞ and C₀ indicate the reversibility between sorption and desorption, which is interpreted by the occurrence of physisorption by sorbed hydrogen molecules. However, the measured diffusivity of the polymers was found to be increased with increasing thickness above 5 mm. Moreover, the larger D_d values measured in the desorption process compared to D_s may be attributed to an increased amorphous phase and volume swelling caused by increased hydrogen voids and polymer chain scission after decompression. The t_s and t_d were found to be linearly proportional to the square of the thickness above an aspect ratio of 3.7, which was consistent with the numerical simulations based on the solution of Fick's law. This finding could be used to predict the t_s in a polymer without any measurement, depending on the sample size.
