Facile synthesis of hierarchically structured MIL-53(Al) with superior properties using an environmentally-friendly ultrasonic method for separating lead ions from aqueous solutions

Metal-organic frame material encapsulated Rhodamine 6G: A highly sensitive fluorescence sensing platform for the detection of picric acid contaminants in water

As a water pollutant with excellent solubility, 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (also known as picric acid, PA) poses a potential threat to the natural environment and human health, so it is crucial important to detect PA in water. In this study, a novel composite material (MIL-53(Al)@R6G) was successfully synthesized by encapsulating Rhodamine 6G into a metal-organic frame material, which was used for fluorescence detection of picric acid (PA) in water. The composite exhibits bright yellow fluorescence emission with a fluorescence quantum yield of 58.23 %. In the process of PA detection, the composite has excellent selectivity and anti-interference performance, and PA can significantly quench the fluorescence intensity of MIL-53(Al)@R6G. MIL-53(Al)@R6G has the advantages of fast detection time (20 s), wide linear range (1-100 µM) and low detection limit (4.8 nM). In addition, MIL-53(Al)@R6G has demonstrated its potential for the detection of PA in environmental water samples with satisfactory results.

Enhanced Cataluminescence Sensor Based on SiO2/MIL-53(Al) for Detecting Isobutylaldehyde

A simple, rapid, and reliable method for detecting harmful gases is urgently required in environmental security fields. In this study, a highly effective cataluminescence sensor based on SiO2/MIL-53(Al) composites was developed to detect trace isobutylaldehyde. The sensor was designed using isobutylaldehyde to generate an interesting cataluminescence phenomenon in SiO2/MIL-53(Al). Under optimized conditions, a positive linear relationship was observed between the signal intensity of the cataluminescence and isobutylaldehyde concentration. The isobutylaldehyde concentration range of 1.55-310 ppm responded well to the sensing test, with an excellent correlation coefficient of 0.9996. The minimum detectable concentration signal-to-noise ratio (S/N = 3) was found to be 0.49 ppm. In addition, the sensor was effectively utilized for analyzing trace isobutylaldehyde; the analysis resulted in recoveries ranging from 83.4% to 105%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 4.8% to 9.4%. Furthermore, the mechanism of cataluminescence between SiO2/MIL-53(Al) and isobutylaldehyde was explored using GC-MS analysis and density functional theory. We expect that this cataluminescence methodology will provide an approach for the environmental monitoring of isobutylaldehyde.

Synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of oilfield-produced water by electrospun photocatalytic fibers of Polystyrene/Nanorod-Graphitic carbon nitride

Graphitic carbon nitride with nanorod structure (Nr-GCN) was synthesized using melamine as a precursor without any other reagents by hydrothermal pretreatment method. XRD, FTIR, SEM, N2 adsorption-desorption from BET, UV-Vis DRS spectroscopy, and photoluminescence were used to characterize the prepared samples. Also, the photoelectrochemical behavior of nanoparticles was studied by photocurrent transient response and cyclic voltammetry analysis. Polystyrene (PS) fibrous mat was fabricated by electrospinning technique and used as a support for the stabilization of the nanoparticles. The performance of the synthesized nanoparticles and photocatalytic fibers (PS/Nr-GCN) was evaluated in oilfield-produced water treatment under visible light irradiation. During this process, oil contaminants were adsorbed by hydrophobic polystyrene fibers and simultaneously degraded by Nr-GCN. The removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD) has been obtained 96.6% and 98.4% by Nr-GCN and PS/Nr-GCN, respectively, at the optimum conditions of pH 4, photocatalyst dosage 0.5 g/L, COD initial concentration 550 mg/L, and illumination time 150 min. The gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy analysis results showed 99.3% removal of total petroleum hydrocarbons using photocatalytic fibers of PS/Nr-GCN. The results demonstrated that the GCN has outstanding features like controllable morphology, visible-light-driven, and showing high potential in oily wastewater remediation. Moreover, the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation is an effective technique in oilfield-produced water treatment.

Microwave-Responsive Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) for Enhanced In Vitro Controlled Release of Doxorubicin

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent candidates for a range of applications because of their numerous advantages, such as high surface area, porosity, and thermal and chemical stability. In this study, microwave (MW) irradiation is used as a novel stimulus in vitro controlled release of Doxorubicin (DOX) from two MOFs, namely Fe-BTC and MIL-53(Al), to enhance drug delivery in cancer therapy. DOX was encapsulated into Fe-BTC and MIL-53(Al) with drug-loading efficiencies of up to 67% for Fe-BTC and 40% for MIL-53(Al). Several characterization tests, including XRD, FTIR, TGA, BET, FE-SEM, and EDX, confirmed both MOF samples' drug-loading and -release mechanisms. Fe-BTC exhibited a substantial improvement in drug-release efficiency (54%) when exposed to microwave irradiation at pH 7.4 for 50 min, whereas 11% was achieved without the external modality. A similar result was observed at pH 5.3; however, in both cases, the release efficiencies were substantially higher with microwave exposure (40%) than without (6%). In contrast, MIL-53(Al) exhibited greater sensitivity to pH, displaying a higher release rate (66%) after 38 min at pH 5.3 compared to 55% after 50 min at pH 7.4 when subjected to microwave irradiation. These results highlight the potential of both MOFs as highly heat-responsive to thermal stimuli. The results of the MTT assay demonstrated the cell viability across different concentrations of the MOFs after two days of incubation. This suggests that MOFs hold promise as potential candidates for tumor targeting. Additionally, the fact that the cells maintained their viability at different durations of microwave exposure confirms that the latter is a safe modality for triggering drug release from MOFs.

Physiochemical characterization of metal organic framework materials: A mini review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials offering exceptional performance across a myriad of applications, attributable to their remarkable physicochemical properties such as regular porosity, crystalline structure, and tailored functional groups. Despite their potential, there is a lack of dedicated reviews that focus on key physicochemical characterizations of MOFs for the beginners and new researchers in the field. This review is written based on our expertise in the synthesis and characterization of MOFs, specifically to provide a right direction for the researcher who is a beginner in this area. In this way, experimental errors can be reduced, and wastage of time and chemicals can be avoided when new researchers conduct a study. In this article, this topic is critically analyzed, and findings and conclusions are presented. We reviewed three well-known XRD techniques, including PXRD, single crystal XRD, and SAXS, which were used for XRD analysis depending on the crystal size and the quality of crystal morphology. The TGA profile was an effective factor for evaluating the quality of the activation process and for ensuring the successful investigation for other characterizations. The BET and pore size were significantly affected by the activation process and selective benzene chain cross-linkers. FTIR is a prominent method that is used to investigate the functional groups on pore surfaces, and this method is successfully used to evaluate the activation process, characterize functionalized MOFs, and estimate their applications. The most significant methods of characterization include the X-ray diffraction, which is utilized for structural identification, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which is used for exploring thermal decomposition. It is important to note that the thermal stability of MOFs is influenced by two main factors: the metal-ligand interaction and the type of functional groups attached to the organic ligand. The textural properties of the MOFs, on the other hand, can be scrutinized through nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms experiments at 77 K. However, for smaller pore size, the Argon adsorption-desorption isotherm at 87.3 K is preferred. Furthermore, the CO2 adsorption isotherm at 273 K can be used to measure ultra-micropore sizes and sizes lower than these, which cannot be measured by using the N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm at 77 K. The highest BET was observed in high-valence MOFs that are constructed based on the metal-oxo cluster, which has an excellent ability to control their textural properties. It was found that the synthesis procedure (including the choice of solvent, cross-linker, secondary metal, surface functional groups, and temperature), activation method, and pressure significantly impact the surface area of the MOF and, by extension, its structural integrity. Additionally, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy plays a crucial role in identifying active MOF functional groups. Understanding these physicochemical properties and utilizing relevant characterization techniques will enable more precise MOF selection for specific applications.

Selective adsorption of anionic and cationic dyes on mesoporous UiO-66 synthesized using a template-free sonochemistry method: kinetic, isotherm and thermodynamic studies

In this study, template-free mesoporous UiO-66(U) has been successfully synthesized in shortened time by sonochemical methods and provided energy savings. The synthesized mesoporous UiO-66(U) demonstrated irregular morphology particle around 43.5 nm according to the SEM image. The N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherm indicated an irregular, 8.88 nm pore width mesoporous structure. Ultrasonic irradiation waves greatly altered mesoporous materials. A mechanism for mesoporous UiO-66(U) formation has been proposed based on the present findings. Sonochemical-solvent heat saves 97% more energy than solvothermal. Mesoporous UiO-66(U) outperformed solvothermal-synthesized UiO-66(S) in adsorption. These studies exhibited that mesopores in UiO-66 promote dye molecule mass transfer (MO, CR, and MB). According to kinetics and adsorption isotherms, the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models matched experimental results. Thermodynamic studies demonstrated that dye adsorption is spontaneous and exothermically governed by entropy, not enthalpy. Mesoporous UiO-66(U) also showed good anionic dye selectivity in mixed dye adsorption. Mesoporous UiO-66(U) may be regenerated four times while maintaining strong adsorption capability.

Novel strategies for the formulation and processing of aluminum metal-organic framework-based sensing systems toward environmental monitoring of metal ions

Aluminum is a relatively inexpensive and abundant metal for the mass production of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Aluminum-based MOFs (Al-MOFs) have drawn a good deal of research interest due to their unique properties for diverse applications (e.g., excellent chemical and structural stability). This review has been organized to highlight the current progress achieved in the synthesis/functionalization of Al-MOF materials with the special emphasis on their sensing application, especially toward metal ion pollutants in the liquid phase. To learn more about the utility of Al-MOF-based sensing systems, their performances have been evaluated for diverse metallic components in reference to many other types of sensing systems (in terms of the key quality assurance (QA) criteria such as limit of detection (LOD)). Finally, the challenges and outlook for Al-MOF-based sensing systems are discussed to help expand their real-world applications.

A dual purpose aluminum-based metal organic framework for the removal of chloramphenicol from wastewater

The presence of antibiotics in the aquatic environment can cause significant environmental and human health problems even at trace concentrations. Conventional treatment systems alone are ineffective in removing these resistant antibiotics. To address this problem, oxidation and adsorption techniques were used to explore the removal of recalcitrant antibiotic chloramphenicol (CAP). An aluminum-based metal-organic framework (Al-MIL) with high surface area and extended porosity, was prepared and used both as adsorbent and catalyst for the oxidation of CAP. Characterization of the Al-MIL revealed a large surface area of 1137 m² g^-1, a homogeneous microporous structure, good crystallinity, and particle size in the range of 200-400 nm. Adsorption of CAP on Al-MIL achieved equilibrium after 1 h, reaching a maximum adsorption capacity of 96.1 mg g^-1 at the optimum pH value of 5.3. The combination of adsorption and oxidation did not improve the % TOC reduction considerably, indicating an antagonistic rather than synergistic effect between the two processes. Oxidation alone in the presence of persulfate, achieved a % TOC reduction of 71% after 2 h, compared to 56% achieved by adsorption alone at the same duration. The optimum persulfate concentration was determined as 2.5 mM. The Al-MIL structure did not demonstrate any substantial deterioriation after six repeated runs, according to the reusability experiments.

Facile synthesis of CoFe2O4@MIL-53(Al) nanocomposite for fast dye removal: Adsorption models, optimization and recyclability

The global occurrence of textile dyes pollution has recently emerged, posing a serious threat to ecological systems. To abate dye contamination, we here developed a novel magnetic porous CoFe₂O₄@MIL-53(Al) nanocomposite by incorporating magnetic CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles with MIL-53(Al) metal-organic framework. This nanocomposite possessed a surface area of 197.144 m² g^-1 and a pore volume of 0.413 cm³ g^-1. The effect of contact time (5-120 min), concentration (5-50 mg L^-1), dosage (0.1-1.0 g L^-1), and pH (2-10) on Congo red adsorption was clarified. CoFe₂O₄@MIL-53(Al) could remove 95.85% of Cong red dye from water with an accelerated kinetic rate of 0.6544 min^-1 within 10 min. The kinetic and isotherm models showed the predominance of Bangham and Temkin. According to Langmuir, the maximum uptake capacities of CoFe₂O₄@MIL-53(Al), CoFe₂O₄, and MIL-53(Al) adsorbents were 43.768, 17.982, and 15.295 mg g^-1, respectively. CoFe₂O₄@MIL-53(Al) was selected to optimize Cong red treatment using Box-Behnken experimental design. The outcomes showed that CoFe₂O₄@MIL-53(Al) achieved the highest experimental uptake capacity of 35.919 mg g^-1 at concentration (29.966 mg L^-1), time (14.926 min), and dosage (0.486 g L^-1). CoFe₂O₄@MIL-53(Al) could treat dye mixture (methylene blue, methyl orange, Congo red, malachite green, and crystal violet) with an outstanding removal efficiency of 81.24% for 30 min, and could be reused up to five cycles. Therefore, novel recyclable and stable CoFe₂O₄@MIL-53(Al) is recommended to integrate well with real dye treatments systems.

Highly efficient amino-functionalized aluminum-based metal organic frameworks mesoporous nanorods for selective extraction of hydrocortisone in pharmaceutical wastewater

Hydrocortisone (HC), as a common steroid hormone drug, is also one of the key intermediates involved in the synthesis of multiple steroid hormone drugs. Residual HC in pharmaceutical wastewater frequently pollutes environmental water as steroid hormone contaminant and possesses great threat to human health as well as sustainable development of the ecosystem. Herein, in order to develop a highly efficient adsorbent system for selective enrichment and detection of HC in pharmaceutical wastewater, a novel amino-functionalized aluminum-based metal organic frameworks (Al-MOFs@NH₂) mesoporous nanorod is fabricated, in which 2-aminoterephthalic acid plays a dual role as organic linker and functional modification unit. The resultant Al-MOFs@NH₂ not only exhibits stable mesoporous structure but also has large specific surface area (849.76 m² g^-1) and plentiful binding sites, which significantly increases the adsorption capacity for HC. Under the promotion of hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction together, Al-MOFs@NH₂ possesses high adsorption capacity (218.53 mg g^-1) for HC, as well as shows satisfactory selectivity for HC and other steroid hormones. Moreover, a method using Al-MOFs@NH₂ as solid phase extraction adsorbents combined with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been developed to specifically enrich and detect trace amount of HC in pharmaceutical wastewater. The developed method has a low limit of detection (LOD) (0.5×10^-3 μg mL^-1) and shows satisfactory recoveries for HC (75.9%-102.5%) with an acceptable relative standard deviation (RSD). These results demonstrate that the facile one-step preparation and excellent adsorption capacity makes Al-MOFs@NH₂ attractive to capture and remove environmental steroid hormone pollutants. More importantly, the method proposed in this work is expected to provide a prospective solution for analysis of strong bioactive contaminants in pharmaceutical wastewater.

Integrated ultrasound-assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction for efficient determination and pre-concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from high-consumption soft drinks and non-alcoholic beers in Iran

In the present research, an ultrasound-assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction coupled with a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry hybrid system was developed for extraction/determination of trace amounts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in high-consumption soft drinks and non-alcoholic beers in Iran using magnetite graphene oxide adsorbent. The magnetite graphene oxide was characterized by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and vibrating-sample magnetometer techniques. The highest extraction recovery (73.05 to 95.56%) and enrichment factor (90.65 to 106.38) were obtained at adsorbent mass: 10 mg, adsorption time: 30 min, salt addition: sodium chloride 10% w/v, desorption time: 20 min, eluent type: hexane: acetone (1:1, v/v), and desorption solvent volumes: 200 μL. Under optimum conditions, the linearity range for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons determination was 0.2-200 ng mL^-1  with coefficient of determination> 0.993, limit of detection = 0.09-0.21 ng mL^-1 , limit of quantitation = 0.3-0.7 ng mL^-1 , and relative standard deviation < 8.1%, respectively. Relative recoveries in spiked real samples ranged from 94.67 to 109.45 % with standard deviation < 6.05%. The proposed method is effective, sensitive, reusable and it is promising for the analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons residues in environmental samples. Effective removal of Pb(II) ions using piperazine-modified magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposite; optimization by response surface methodology

In this research, the piperazine-modified magnetic graphene oxide (Pip@MGO) nanocomposite was synthesized and utilized as a nano-adsorbent for the removal of Pb(II) ions from environmental water and wastewater samples. The physicochemical properties of Pip@MGO nanocomposite was characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), Vibrating Sample Magnetometery (VSM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis. In this method, the batch removal process were designed by response surface methodology (RSM) based on a central composite design (CCD) model. The results indicated that the highest efficiency of Pb(II) removal was obtained from the quadratic model under optimum conditions of prominent parameters (initial pH 6.0, adsorbent dosage 7 mg, initial concentration of lead 15 mg L⁻¹ and contact time 27.5 min). Adsorption data showed that lead ions uptake on Pip@MGO nanocomposite followed the Langmuir isotherm model equation and pseudo-second order kinetic model. High adsorption capacity (558.2 mg g⁻¹) and easy magnetic separation capability showed that the synthesized Pip@MGO nanocomposite has great potential for the removal of Pb(II) ions from contaminated wastewaters.

Preparation of Magnetic MIL-68(Ga) Metal-Organic Framework and Heavy Metal Ion Removal Application

A magnetic metal-organic framework nanocomposite (magnetic MIL-68(Ga)) was synthesized through a "one pot" reaction and used for heavy metal ion removal. The morphology and elemental properties of the nanocomposite were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), as well as zeta potential. Moreover, the factors affecting the adsorption capacity of the nanocomposite, including time, pH, metal ion type and concentration, were studied. It was found that the adsorption capacity of magnetic MIL-68(Ga) for Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺ was 220 and 130 mg/g, respectively. Notably, the magnetic adsorbents could be separated easily using an external magnetic field, regenerated by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-Na₂) and reused three times, in favor of practical application. This study provides a reference for the rapid separation and purification of heavy metal ions from wastewater.
