Efficient generation of few-cycle pulses beyond 10 μm from an optical parametric amplifier pumped by a 1-µm laser system

Mid-infrared electronic wavelength tuning through intracavity difference-frequency mixing in Cr:ZnSe lasers

Mid-infrared tunable coherent light sources are used in various laser applications, such as trace gas detection, laser processing, and biomedical diagnostics. This study demonstrates mid-infrared generation in the 8.3-11 µm (i.e., 900-1200 cm^-1) spectral range by configuring intracavity difference-frequency generation (DFG) using ZnGeP₂ (ZGP) in an electronically tuned Cr:ZnSe laser. The broad tunability is achieved with the maximum pulse energies exceeding 100 μJ by combining the electronic wavelength tuning with sligh angle adjustments (Δθ < 0.5°) of ZGP under the spectral noncritical phase-matching condition of the nonlinear material. The proposed DFG method is generalized to give access to a significant fraction of the molecular fingerprint region by utilizing selenide compounds (e.g., AgGaSe₂, CdSe) in addition to ZGP, revealing the remarkable potential of ultrabroadband electronic mid-infrared scanning for numerous spectroscopic applications.

Inline amplification of mid-infrared intrapulse difference frequency generation

We demonstrate an ultrafast mid-infrared source architecture that implements both intrapulse difference frequency generation (iDFG) and further optical parametric amplification (OPA), in an all-inline configuration. The source is driven by a nonlinearly compressed high-energy Yb-doped-fiber amplifier delivering 7.4 fs pulses at a central wavelength of 1030 nm, at a repetition rate of 250 kHz. It delivers 1 µJ, 73 fs pulses at a central wavelength of 8 µm, tunable over more than one octave. By enrolling all the pump photons in the iDFG process and recycling the long wavelength pump photons amplified in the iDFG in the subsequent OPA, we obtain an unprecedented overall optical efficiency of 2%. These performances, combining high energy and repetition rate in a very simple all-inline setup, make this technique ideally suited for a growing number of applications, such as high harmonic generation in solids or two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy experiments.

Tutorial on the instrumentation of sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy: Using a Ti:sapphire based system as an example

Sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS) is an intrinsically surface-selective vibrational spectroscopic technique based on the second-order nonlinear optical process. Since its birth in the 1980s, SFG-VS has been used to solve interfacial structure and dynamics in a variety of research fields including chemistry, physics, materials sciences, biological sciences, environmental sciences, etc. Better understanding of SFG-VS instrumentation is no doubt an essential step to master this sophisticated technique. To address this need, here we will present a Tutorial with respect to the classification, setup layout, construction, operation, and data processing about SFG-VS. We will focus on the steady state Ti:sapphire based broad bandwidth SFG-VS system and use it as an example. We hope this Tutorial is beneficial for newcomers to the SFG-VS field and for people who are interested in using SFG-VS technique in their research.

Parametric downconversion via vibronic transition

This Letter presents the first, to the best of our knowledge, demonstration of noncritically birefringent-phase-matched parametric downconversion, which is associated with stimulated emission via vibronic transition in a laser gain medium. The so-called self-difference frequency generation is realized along the a-axis of a Cr:CdSe single crystal pumped by a Tm:YAG laser pulse at 2.013 µm, directly producing an infrared spectrum centered at 9 µm with the maximized effective nonlinearity. The light source, which benefits from the broad vibronic spectroscopic properties together with the wide transparency range of the host material, is expected to generate noncritically phase-matched, mid-infrared spectra beyond 20 µm along with birefringence engineering in the solid solution Cr:CdSxSe_1-x.

Generation of 8–20 μm Mid-Infrared Ultrashort Femtosecond Laser Pulses via Difference Frequency Generation

Mid-infrared (MIR) ultrashort laser pulses have a wide range of applications in the fields of environmental monitoring, laser medicine, food quality control, strong-field physics, attosecond science, and some other aspects. Recent years have seen great developments in MIR laser technologies. Traditional solid-state and fiber lasers focus on the research of the short-wavelength MIR region. However, due to the limitation of the gain medium, they still cannot cover the long-wavelength region from 8 to 20 µm. This paper summarizes the developments of 8–20 μm MIR ultrafast laser generation via difference frequency generation (DFG) and reviews related theoretical models. Finally, the feasibility of MIR power scaling by nonlinear-amplification DFG and methods for measuring the power of DFG-based MIR are analyzed from the author’s perspective.
