Biomaterials for reliable wearable health monitoring: Applications in skin and eye integration

Recent advancements in biomaterials have significantly impacted wearable health monitoring, creating opportunities for personalized and non-invasive health assessments. These developments address the growing demand for customized healthcare solutions. Durability is a critical factor for biomaterials in wearable applications, as they must withstand diverse wearing conditions effectively. Therefore, there is a heightened focus on developing biomaterials that maintain robust and stable functionalities, essential for advancing wearable sensing technologies. This review examines the biomaterials used in wearable sensors, specifically those interfaced with human skin and eyes, highlighting essential strategies for achieving long-lasting and stable performance. We specifically discuss three main categories of biomaterials-hydrogels, fibers, and hybrid materials-each offering distinct properties ideal for use in durable wearable health monitoring systems. Moreover, we delve into the latest advancements in biomaterial-based sensors, which hold the potential to facilitate early disease detection, preventative interventions, and tailored healthcare approaches. We also address ongoing challenges and suggest future directions for research on material-based wearable sensors to encourage continuous innovation in this dynamic field.

Diagnostic use of circulating cells and sub-cellular bio-particles

In the bloodstream or other physiological fluids, "circulating cells and sub-cellular bio-particles" include many microscopic biological elements such as circulating tumor cells (CTCs), cell-free DNA (cfDNA), exosomes, microRNAs, platelets, immune cells, and proteins are the most well-known and investigated. These structures are crucial biomarkers in healthcare and medical research for the early detection of cancer and other disorders, enabling treatment to commence before the onset of clinical symptoms and enhancing the efficacy of treatments. As the size of these biomarkers to be detected decreases and their numbers in body fluids diminishes, the detection materials, ranging from visual inspection to advanced microscopy techniques, begin to become smaller, more sensitive, faster, and more effective, thanks to developing nanotechnology. This review first defines the circulating cells and subcellular bio-particles with their biological, physical, and mechanical properties and second focuses on their diagnostic importance, including their most recent applications as biomarkers, the biosensors that are utilized to detect them, the present obstacles that must be surmounted, and prospective developments in the domain. As technology advances and biomolecular pathways are deepens, diagnostic tests will become more sensitive, specific, and thorough. Finally, integrating recent advances in the diagnostic use of circulating cells and bioparticles into clinical practice is promising for precision medicine and patient outcomes.

Na+ detection via brightening of synergistically originated noble metal nanoclusters

Weakly fluorescent AuAg nanoclusters were obtained from glutathione, chloroauric acid, and silver nitrate aqueous solution under a modified hydrothermal method. Such glutathione-capped synergistically evolved clusters were obtained for the first time by employing our experimental conditions. Such weak fluorescence was made significantly brighter by employing Na+ and a Na+ sensor was obtained with a linear detection range of 10-5-5 × 10-9 M, while the limit of detection was 1.02 × 10-6 M. Na+ made the GSH matrix positively charged to stabilize AuAg clusters resulting in strong emissive properties. Furthermore, the effect of solvents, sunlight exposure, and temperature was gauged. Estimation of Na+ concentration was undertaken for natural water samples to demonstrate the practical utility of the designed nanosensor.

Visible light sensing of ions by a cyanoquinoxaline 1,4-dioxide-based probe and its applications

Inducting newer fluorophores for colourimetry/fluorimetry-assisted analyte sensing is of great importance. Towards this end, we have shown the application of quinoxaline-1,4-dioxide bioactive molecules for the first time as potential probes for cations and anions. The molecule (ACQ) used in this study is soluble in water and provides specific colour output upon interaction with copper and palladium ions. Changing the solvent to DMSO allows a change in selectivity to fluoride ions via pink to blue colour change. All the ions detected showed quenching of the fluorescence signal upon interaction with the probe. Analysis of the Stern-Volmer plot indicated the predominant role of static quenching in the selective ion-sensing behaviour of the probe. The stoichiometry of the ACQ and ion was 2 : 1 in the case of Cu²⁺ and Pd²⁺, whereas a ratio of 1 : 1 was seen in the case of F^-. We have also applied ACQ to probe the above-mentioned analytes in practical settings.

Wearable Natural Rubber Latex Gloves with Curcumin for Torn Glove Detection in Clinical Settings

Glove tear or perforation is a common occurrence during various activities that require gloves to be worn, posing a significant risk to the wearer and possibly others. This is vitally important in a clinical environment and particularly during surgical procedures. When a glove perforation occurs (and is noticed), the glove must be replaced as soon as possible; however, it is not always noticeable. The present article is focused on the design and development of a novel fluorescence-based sensing mechanism, which is integrated within the glove topology, to help alert the wearer of a perforation in situ. We hypothesized that natural rubber gloves with curcumin infused would yield fluorescence when the glove is damaged, particularly when torn or punctured. The glove design is based on double-dipping between Natural Rubber Latex (NRL) and an inner layer of latex mixed with curcumin, which results in a notable bright yellow-green emission when exposed to UV light. Curcumin (Cur) is a phenolic chemical found primarily in turmeric that fluoresces yellowish-green at 525 nm. The tear region on the glove will glow, indicating the presence of a Cur coating/dipping layer beneath. NRL film is modified by dipping it in a Cur dispersion solution mixed with NRL for the second dipping layer. Using Cur as a filler in NRL also has the distinct advantage of allowing the glove to be made stronger by evenly distributing it throughout the rubber phase. Herein, the optimized design is fully characterized, including physicochemical (fluorescence emission) and mechanical (tensile and tear tests) properties, highlighting the clear potential of this novel and low-cost approach for in situ torn glove detection.
