Photocatalytic degradation activity of goji berry extract synthesized silver-loaded mesoporous zinc oxide (Ag@ZnO) nanocomposites under simulated solar light irradiation

Robust polymer hybrid and assembly materials from structure tailoring to efficient catalytic remediation of emerging pollutants

A massive amount of toxic substances and harmful chemicals are released every day into the outer environment, imposing serious environmental impacts on both land and aquatic animals. To date, research is constantly in progress to determine the best catalytic material for the effective remediation of these harmful pollutants. Hybrid nanomaterials prepared by combining functional polymers with inorganic nanostructures got attention as a promising area of research owing to their remarkable multifunctional properties deriving from their entire nanocomposite structure. The versatility of the existing nanomaterials' design in polymer-inorganic hybrids, with respect to their structure, composition, and architecture, opens new prospects for catalytic applications in environmental remediation. This review article provides comprehensive detail on catalytic polymer nanocomposites and highlights how they might act as a catalyst in the remediation of toxic pollutants. Additionally, it provides a detailed clarification of the processing of design and synthetic ways for manufacturing polymer nanocomposites and explores further into the concepts of precise design methodologies. Polymer nanocomposites are used for treating pollutants (electrocatalytic, biocatalytic, catalytic, and redox degradation). The three catalytic techniques that are frequently used are thoroughly illustrated. Furthermore, significant improvements in the method through which the aforementioned catalytic process and pollutants are extensively discussed. The final section summarizes challenges in research and the potential of catalytic polymer nanocomposites for environmental remediation.

Green synthesis of ZnO-TiO2/RGO nanocomposites using Senna surattensis extract: a novel approach for enhanced anticancer efficacy and biocompatibility

The purpose of the present study is to enhance the anticancer and biocompatibility performance of TiO2 NPs, ZnO NPs, ZnO-TiO2 (NCs), and ZnO-TiO2/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) NCs against two types of human cancer (HCT116) and normal (HUVCE) cells. A novel procedure for synthesizing ZnO-TiO2/RGO NCs has been developed using Senna surattensis extract. The improved physicochemical properties of the obtained samples were investigated using different techniques such as XRD, TEM, SEM, XPS, FTIR, DLS and UV-visible spectroscopy. XRD results showed that the addition of ZnO and RGO sheets affects the crystal structure and phase of TiO2 NPs. SEM and TEM images displayed that the TiO2 NPs and ZnO NPs were small with uniform spherical morphology in the prepared ZnO-TiO2/RGO NCs. Besides, it is shown that ZnO-TiO2 NCs anchored onto the surface of RGO sheets with a particle size of 14.80 ± 0.5 nm. XPS data confirmed the surface chemical composition and oxidation states of ZnO-TiO2/RGO NCs. Functional groups of prepared NPs and NCs were determined using FTIR spectroscopy. DLS data confirmed that the addition of ZnO and RGO sheets improves the negative surface charge of the prepared pure TiO2 NPs (-22.51 mV), ZnO NPs (-18.27 mV), ZnO-TiO2 NCs (-30.20 mV), and ZnO-TiO2/RGO NCs (-33.77 mV). Optical analysis exhibited that the bandgap energies of TiO2 NPs (3.30 eV), ZnO NPs (3.33 eV), ZnO-TiO2 NCs (3.03 eV), and ZnO-TiO2/RGO NCs (2.78 eV) were further enhanced by adding ZnO NPs and RGO sheets. This indicates that the synthesized samples can be applied to cancer therapy and environmental remediation. The biological data demonstrated that the produced ZnO-TiO2/RGO NCs show a more cytotoxic effect on HCT116 cells compared to pure TiO2 NPs and ZnO-TiO2 NCs. On the other hand, these NCs displayed the lowest level of toxicity towards normal HUVCE cells. These results indicate that the ZnO-TiO2/RGO NCs have strong toxicity against HCT116 cells and are compatible with normal cells. Our results show that the plant extract enhanced the physicochemical properties of NPs and NCs compared with the traditional chemical methods for synthesis. This study could open new avenues for developing more effective and targeted cancer treatments.

Photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline using surface defective black TiO2-ZnO heterojunction photocatalyst under visible light

Fabrication of heterojunction and surface defective engineering, through the formation of oxygen vacancies, are among the various photocatalytic enhancement techniques. A combination of these techniques has the prospect of enhancing photocatalytic activities through improved light absorption capabilities and charge separation process of the photocatalysts. In this study, a heterojunction of black titanium oxide-zinc oxide (BTiO2-ZnO) nanocomposite was synthesized using the conventional sol-gel approach, coupled with aluminum foil-assisted NaBH4 reduction. The structure, morphology, surface properties, and optical characteristics of the synthesized material were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis absorption spectra, scanning electron microscope (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The XRD confirmed the successful formation of BTiO2-ZnO heterostructure, while SEM revealed the structural morphology as pseudo-spherical with slight agglomeration. BTiO2-ZnO was found to be more efficient than BTiO2 and BZnO for the removal of tetracycline with degradation efficiencies of 63, 58, and 56 % respectively. The effects of process parameters such as the amount of photocatalyst, pollutant's concentration, and the initial solution pH on photocatalytic degradation study were systematically explored. The results confirm that the formation of the heterostructure from BTiO2 and BZnO could offer a facile route to improving the catalytic degradation of tetracycline. Therefore, this study offers a novel perspective on the design of efficient metal oxide photocatalyst systems that rely on the integration of defect engineering and heterojunction for the removal of organic contaminants.

Three-dimensional rGO/CNT/g-C3N4 macro discs as an efficient peroxymonosulfate activator for catalytic degradation of sulfamethoxazole

Over the past few years, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have shown promising efficiencies for wastewater remediation. Carbocatalysis, in particular, has been exploited widely thanks to its sustainable and economical properties but has an issue of recovery and reusability of the catalysts. To address this, three-dimensional (3D) binary and ternary graphene-based composites in the form of macro discs were created to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for catalytic oxidation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Graphene oxide served as the base, while graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and/or single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were added. Among the various discs synthesized, rGNTCN discs (ternary composite) were proven to be the most efficient by completely degrading SMX in 60 min owing to their large surface area and nitrogen loading. The catalytic system was further optimized by varying the reaction parameters, and selective radical quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance tests were performed to identify the active radical, revealing the synergistic role of both radical and non-radical pathways. This led to the development of possible SMX degradation pathways. This research not only provides insights into ternary carbocatalysis but also gives a novel breakthrough in catalyst recovery and reusability by transforming nanocatalysts into macro catalysts.

Sustainable bioactivity enhancement of ZnO-Ag nanoparticles in antimicrobial, antibiofilm, lung cancer, and photocatalytic applications

Cancer, microbial infections, and water pollution are significant challenges the modern human population faces. Traditional treatments for cancer and infections often have adverse effects and ecological consequences, while chemical methods for water decontamination can produce harmful byproducts. Metal nanoparticles, particularly zinc oxide (ZnO) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles, show promise in addressing these issues. However, doping Ag on ZnO NPs may synergistically enhance biomedical and therapeutic effects with fewer adverse consequences and improved photocatalytic properties for wastewater treatment. This study aimed to create ZnO and ZnO-Ag nanoparticles through green synthesis and compare their anticancer, antimicrobial, and photocatalytic activity mechanisms. XRD studies determined the crystal diameters of ZnO NPs and ZnO-Ag NPs to be 12.8 nm and 15.7 nm, respectively, with a hexagonal wurtzite structure. The XPS and EDS analyses confirmed the presence of Ag on the ZnO NPs. ZnO NPs and ZnO-Ag NPs exhibited low aggregation in aqueous suspensions, with zeta potentials of -20.5 mV and -22.7 mV, respectively. Evaluating antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity demonstrates that ZnO-Ag NPs have superior potential to ZnO NPs and standard antibiotic drugs against E. coli, S. typhi, B. subtilis, S. aureus, C. albicans, and A. niger. The results of the in vitro cytotoxicity test indicated that on the NCI-H460 lung cancer cell line, ZnO NPs and ZnO-Ag NPs demonstrated IC50 values of 40 μg mL-1 and 30 μg mL-1, respectively. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under direct sunlight revealed that ZnO and ZnO-Ag NPs degraded MB by 98% and 70% in 105 min, respectively. These results show that these nanomaterials may have great potential for treating the aforementioned issues.

Dynamically driven perovskite La-Fe-modified SrTiO3 nanocubes and their improved photoresponsive activity under visible light: influence of alkaline environment

Visible-light active La-Fe-SrTiO3 (La0.01Sr0.99Fe0.01Ti0.99O3) photocatalysts were synthesized via a dynamic hydrothermal route under different NaOH concentrations (2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 M). The results showed that altering NaOH concentrations changed the physicochemical characteristics of the materials. Namely, the decrease in particle size was observed when the NaOH levels were increased. The specific surface area of the photocatalysts changed with an increased concentration of NaOH, and the maximum value was 17.10 m2/g in 5 M of NaOH. The crystal structure of all prepared samples remained unaffected when altered the NaOH concentration or when incorporated La and Fe in the lattice of SrTiO3. Namely, all samples synthesized under various NaOH concentrations crystallized and maintained in the standard cubic perovskite structure of SrTiO3. The increased NaOH concentration slightly altered the absorption wavelength towards a longer wavelength region. The La atom, replacing some Sr2+ in the structure of modified SrTiO3, was confirmed to be in the La3+ valence state. Simultaneously, Fe atoms demonstrating oxidation states of Fe3+ can also be incorporated into the SrTiO3 network. The photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin antibiotic revealed that the highest performance was approximately 75% within 9 h over the La0.01Sr0.99Fe0.01Ti0.99O3 sample prepared at 5 M of NaOH via the dynamic hydrothermal process. Meanwhile, this photocatalyst also displayed greater activity than the pristine SrTiO3, the single-doped samples (SrFe0.01Ti0.99O3 and La0.01Sr0.99TiO3), and the La0.01Sr0.99Fe0.01Ti0.99O3 sample prepared through a static hydrothermal technique under the same synthesis condition.

AfuPmV-1-Infected Aspergillus fumigatus Is More Susceptible to Stress Than Virus-Free Fungus

Infection with Aspergillus fumigatus polymycovirus 1 (AfuPmV-1) affects Aspergillus fumigatus Af293's growth in vitro, iron metabolism, resistance in intermicrobial competition with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, resistance to osmotic stress, and resistance to the chitin synthase inhibitor nikkomycin Z. Here, we show that response to high temperature, Congo Red-induced stress, and hydrogen peroxide are also dependent on the viral infection status of A. fumigatus. AfuPmV-1- infected Af293 was more susceptible than virus-free Af293 to growth inhibition by high temperature, hydrogen peroxide, Congo Red exposure, and nutrient restriction. Increased resistance of virus-free fungus was observed when cultures were started from conidia but, in the case of high temperature and hydrogen peroxide, not when cultures were started from hyphae. This indicates that the virus impairs the stress response during the growth phase of germination of conidia and development into hyphae. In conclusion, our work indicates that AfuPmV-1 infection in A. fumigatus impairs host responses to stress, as shown by exposure to high temperature, oxidative stress such as hydrogen peroxide, and some cell wall stresses, as shown by exposure to Congo Red (in agreement with our previous observations using nikkomycin Z) and nutrient restriction.

Photocatalytic Degradation, Anticancer, and Antibacterial Studies of Lysinibacillus sphaericus Biosynthesized Hybrid Metal/Semiconductor Nanocomposites

The biological synthesis of nanocomposites has become cost-effective and environmentally friendly and can achieve sustainability with high efficiency. Recently, the biological synthesis of semiconductor and metal-doped semiconductor nanocomposites with enhanced photocatalytic degradation efficiency, anticancer, and antibacterial properties has attracted considerable attention. To this end, for the first time, we biosynthesized zinc oxide (ZnO) and silver/ZnO nanocomposites (Ag/ZnO NCs) as semiconductor and metal-doped semiconductor nanocomposites, respectively, using the cell-free filtrate (CFF) of the bacterium Lysinibacillus sphaericus. The biosynthesized ZnO and Ag/ZnO NCs were characterized by various techniques, such as ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The photocatalytic degradation potential of these semiconductor NPs and metal-semiconductor NCs was evaluated against thiazine dye, methylene blue (MB) degradation, under simulated solar irradiation. Ag/ZnO showed 90.4 ± 0.46% photocatalytic degradation of MB, compared to 38.18 ± 0.15% by ZnO in 120 min. The cytotoxicity of ZnO and Ag/ZnO on human cervical HeLa cancer cells was determined using an MTT assay. Both nanomaterials exhibited cytotoxicity in a concentration- and time-dependent manner on HeLa cells. The antibacterial activity was also determined against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus). Compared to ZnO, Ag/ZnO NCs showed higher antibacterial activity. Hence, the biosynthesis of semiconductor nanoparticles could be a promising strategy for developing hybrid metal/semiconductor nanomaterials for different biomedical and environmental applications.

Exploring the Paradigm of Phyto-Nanofabricated Metal Oxide Nanoparticles: Recent Advancements, Applications, and Challenges

The development of nanotechnology, in particular metal oxide nanoparticles, has captured immense scientific attention in the global arena due to their unique properties leading to their unique diverse applications. But the use of toxic precursors and high operational cost make existing methodologies inefficient for synthesising metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs). Biogenic synthesis of MONPs has been hailed as a more sustainable approach for the synthesis of NPs due to its alignment with the principles of green chemistry. Microorganisms (bacteria, yeast, algae), animal sources (silk, fur, etc.), and plants are effective, low-cost, and eco-friendly means of synthesizing MONPs since they possess a high bio-reduction abilities to produce NPs of various shapes and sizes. The current review encompasses recent advancements in the field of plant-mediated MONP synthesis and characterisation. The detailed evaluation of various synthesis processes and parameters, key influencing factors affecting the synthesis efficiency and product morphology, practical applications with insight into the associated limitations and challenges presents a valuable database that will be helpful in developing alternative prospects and potential engineering applications.

Sustainable fabrication of hybrid silver-copper nanocomposites (Ag-CuO NCs) using Ocimum americanum L. as an effective regime against antibacterial, anticancer, photocatalytic dye degradation and microalgae toxicity

In this study, a sustainable fabrication of hybrid silver-copper oxide nanocomposites (Ag-CuO NCs) was accomplished utilizing Ocimum americanum L. by one pot green chemistry method. The multifarious biological and environmental applications of the green fabricated Ag-CuO NCs were evaluated through their antibacterial, anticancer, dye degradation, and microalgae growth inhibition activities. The morphological features of the surface functionalized hybrid Ag-CuO NCs were confirmed by FE-SEM and HR-TEM techniques. The surface plasmon resonance λ_max peak appeared at 441.56 nm. The average hydrodynamic size distribution of synthesized nanocomposite was 69.80 nm. Zeta potential analysis of Ag-CuO NCs confirmed its remarkable stability at -21.5 mV. XRD and XPS techniques validated the crystalline structure and electron binding affinity of NCs, respectively. The Ag-CuO NCs demonstrated excellent inhibitory activity against Vibrio cholerae (19.93 ± 0.29 mm) at 100 μg/mL. Anticancer efficacy of Ag-CuO NCs was investigated against the A549 lung cancer cell line, and Ag-CuO NCs exhibited outstanding antiproliferative activity with a low IC₅₀ of 2.8 ± 0.05 μg/mL. Furthermore, staining and comet assays substantiated that the Ag-CuO NCs hindered the progression of the A549 cells and induced apoptosis as a result of cell cycle arrest at the G₀/G₁ phase. Concerning the environmental applications, the Ag-CuO NCs displayed efficient photocatalytic activity against eosin yellow degradation up to 80.94% under sunlight irradiation. Microalgae can be used as an early bio-indicator/prediction of environmental contaminants and toxic substances. The treatment of the Ag-CuO NCs on the growth of marine microalgae Tetraselmis suecica demonstrated the dose and time-dependent growth reduction and variations in the chlorophyll content. Therefore, the efficient multifunctional properties of hybrid Ag-CuO NCs could be exploited as a regime against infective diseases and cancer. Further, the findings of our investigation witness the remarkable scope and potency of Ag-CuO NCs for environmental applications.

Antimicrobial, antioxidant, cytotoxicity and photocatalytic performance of Co doped ZnO nanoparticles biosynthesized using Annona Muricata leaf extract

In the present study, ZnO nanoparticles doped with 3%, 5% and 7% of cobalt have been synthesized by green method using Annona muricata leaf extract. The obtained nanopowder was characterised by XRD, FTIR, XPS, HRTEM, SAED, SEM, EDAX and UV-Visible spectroscopy techniques. XRD patterns confirm the formation of pure and Co doped ZnO nanoparticles with a hexagonal wurtzite structure with high phase purity. FTIR spectra indicate the stretching vibration of Zn-O at 495 cm-1. The incorporation of Co2+ ions into the ZnO lattice was identified by XPS analysis. EDX spectra confirm the existence of Co, Zn and O elements. The SEM and HRTEM micrographs show morphology of nanoparticles. The optical study specifies a decrease in energy band gap with an increase in Co-doping concentration. The photocatalytic performance of ZnO and Zn0.93Co0.07O has been examined for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under sunlight irradiation. The antimicrobial activity of synthesized nanoparticles against s.aureus, p.aeruginosa, b.subtilis bacterial strains c.albicans and a.niger fungal strains as investigated. The Zn0.93Co0.07O nanoparticles exhibit good antioxidant properties. Moreover, the cytotoxicity of ZnO nanoparticles was evaluated against L929 normal fibroblast cells. So, this work suggests that Annona muricata leaf extract mediated pure and Co-doped ZnO nanoparticles are a potential candidate for biomedical and photocatalytic applications.

Ecofriendly green synthesis and characterization of silver zinc oxide nanocomposite using the aqueous leaf extract of Rumex Crispus: Evaluation of its antimicrobial and antioxidant activity

The hydrothermal approach is used in the current study to create an environmentally friendly silver zinc oxide nanocomposite utilizing an aqueous leaf extract of Rumex Crispus. The photochemical components of Rumex Crispus, a synthetic nanocomposite with antioxidant and antibacterial activity, were also assessed. The Response Surface Methodology of Definitive Screen Design (DSD) was used to examine and optimize the effects of four independent variables on the amount of green synthesized silver zinc oxide nanocomposite in Rumex Crispus extract. According to the experimental findings, the green synthesized silver zinc oxide nanocomposite's maximum 1.89 absorbance intensity was achieved at a reaction temperature of 60 °C, a concentration of silver nitrate salt of 100 mM, a pH value of 11, and a reaction period of 3 h. The synthesized nanocomposite was characterized using Fourier-transform infrared, UV, X-ray, UV-vis, Dynamic Light Scattering, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential thermal analysis to determine its functional group, structure, bandgap energy, size distribution, a mass of loss, and energy gain or loss, respectively. The minimum lethal doses for the gram-positive, gram-negative, and fungal strains were 1.25, 0.625, and 2.5 g ml^-1 respectively. The 1-1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) which was used to measure antioxidant activity is scavenged by Ag-ZnO nanocomposites, and the IC50 value of a Rumex Crispus extract is 29.31 g ml-1 IC₅₀ value is.29.31 μg ml^-1. Their findings show that Rumex Crispus extract-derived synthetic silver zinc oxide nanocomposite is a promising alternative against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains and fungal strains, as well as a prospective choice for antioxidants under the given conditions.

Effective Adsorptive Removal of Coomassie Violet Dye from Aqueous Solutions Using Green Synthesized Zinc Hydroxide Nanoparticles Prepared from Calotropis gigantea Leaf Extract

The removal of color from dye wastewater is crucial, since dyes are extremely toxic and can cause cancer in a variety of life forms. Studies must be done to use cost-effective adsorbents for the removal of color from dye effluents to protect the environment. To our knowledge, virtually no research has been done to describe the possibility of using Calotropis gigantea leaf extract zinc hydroxide nanoparticles (CG-Zn(OH)2NPs) as an adsorbent for the decolorization of Coomassie violet (CV) from the aqueous emulsion, either in batch mode or continuously. In the present batch investigation, CV dye is removed from the synthetic aqueous phase using CG-Zn(OH)2NPs as an adsorbent. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized using various instrumental techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area and pore volume, a particle size analyser, and zero-point charge. The decolorization efficacy of CV dye from an aqueous phase by the adsorbent was examined in batch mode by varying process parameters. The consequences of various experimental variables were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) to achieve the maximum decolorization efficiency (90.74%) and equilibrium dye uptake, qe (35.12 mg g−1). The optimum pH, dye concentration, CG-Zn(OH)2NPs adsorbent dosage, and particle size were found to be 1.8, 225 mg L−1, 5 g L−1, and 78 μm, respectively for CV dye adsorption capacity at equilibrium. The adsorbent zero-point charge was found to be at pH 8.5. The Langmuir isotherm model provided a good representation of the equilibrium data in aqueous solutions, with a maximum monolayer adsorption capability (qmax) of 40.25 mg g−1 at 299 K. The dye adsorption rate follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model at various dye concentrations, which indicated that the reaction is more chemisorption than physisorption. The negative values of ΔG and positive values of ΔH at different temperatures indicate that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic, respectively. Reusability tests revealed that the prepared nanoparticles may be used for up to three runs, indicating that the novel CG-Zn(OH)2NPs seems to be a very promising adsorbent for the removal of Coomassie violet dye from wastewater.

Cu/CuO-Doped ZnO Nanocomposites via Solution Combustion Synthesis for Catalytic 4-Nitrophenol Reduction

The synthesis of optoelectrically enhanced nanomaterials should be continuously improved by employing time- and energy-saving techniques. The porous zinc oxide (ZnO) and copper-doped ZnO nanocomposites (NCs) were synthesized by the time- and energy-efficient solution combustion synthesis (SCS) approach. In this SCS approach, once the precursor-surfactant complex ignition point is reached, the reaction starts and ends within a short time without the need for any external energy. The TGA-DTA analysis confirmed that 500 °C was the point at which stable metal oxide was obtained. The doping and heterojunction strategy improved the optoelectric properties of the NCs more than the individual constituents, which then enhanced the materials' charge transfer and optical absorption capabilities. The porosity, nanoscale crystallite size (15-50 nm), and formation of Cu/CuO-ZnO NCs materials were confirmed from the XRD, SEM, and TEM/HRTEM analyses. The obtained d-spacing values of 0.275 and 0.234 nm confirm the formation of ZnO and CuO crystals, respectively. The decrease in photoluminescence intensity for the doped NCs corroborates a reduction in electron-hole recombination. On the Mott-Schottky analysis, the positive slope for ZnO confirms the n-type character, while the negative and positive slopes of the NCs confirm the p- and n-type characters, respectively. A diffusion-controlled type of charge transfer process on the electrode surface was confirmed from the cyclic voltammetric analysis. Thus, the overall analysis shows the applicability of the less expensive and more efficient SCS for several applications, such as catalysis and sensors. To confirm this, an organic catalytic reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol was tested. Within three and a half minutes, the catalytic reduction result showed the great potential of NCs over ZnO NPs. Thus, the energy- and time-saving SCS approach has a great future outlook as an industrial pollutant catalytic reduction application.

A comprehensive correlated analysis of Ra-Doped (ZnO2, ZnO) for optoelectronic applications: a first-principle study

CONTEXT

Zinc oxide (ZnO) exhibits bulk-like behavior and is modified by radium doping to attain favorable electronic properties. The elastic and mechanical response of ZnO₂ is much more favorable than ZnO material. The change in thermal expansion, Debye temperature, free energy, entropy, and specific heat leads it to be a good candidate for thermodynamic applications at low and high temperatures. Optical properties like dielectric function, absorption, refraction, reflection, and refractive index obtained after suitable doping transform the material as optically active. ZnO₂ has low reflectivity and zero absorption below the electronic band gap as compared to ZnO in a wider spectral range. Our analyses on doped ZnO₂ and ZnO make us confident for a wide range of applications in optoelectronic and anti-bacterial treatment in biomedical devices. Especially due to high flexibility and high light transmission, ZnO₂ is an excellent applicant for transparent electrodes.

METHODS

Density functional theory has been employed in consistency with generalized gradient approximation (GGA) with PBEsol to analyze the structural, electronic, elastic, mechanical, thermodynamic, and optical response of pure and Ra-doped (ZnO₂ and ZnO) materials.

The role of nanocomposites against biofilm infections in humans

The use of nanomaterials in several fields of science has undergone a revolution in the last few decades. It has been reported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that 65% and 80% of infections are accountable for at least 65% of human bacterial infections. One of their important applications in healthcare is the use of nanoparticles (NPs) to eradicate free-floating bacteria and those that form biofilms. A nanocomposite (NC) is a multiphase stable fabric with one or three dimensions that are much smaller than 100 nm, or systems with nanoscale repeat distances between the unique phases that make up the material. Using NC materials to get rid of germs is a more sophisticated and effective technique to destroy bacterial biofilms. These biofilms are refractory to standard antibiotics, mainly to chronic infections and non-healing wounds. Materials like graphene and chitosan can be utilized to make several forms of NCs, in addition to different metal oxides. The ability of NCs to address the issue of bacterial resistance is its main advantage over antibiotics. This review highlights the synthesis, characterization, and mechanism through which NCs disrupt Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial biofilms, and their relative benefits and drawbacks. There is an urgent need to develop materials like NCs with a larger spectrum of action due to the rising prevalence of human bacterial diseases that are multidrug-resistant and form biofilms.

Molten Salt Synthesis of Intermetallic Compound TiNi Nanopowder Passivated by TiOx Shell Prepared from NiTiO3 for Catalytic Hydrogenation

Titanium-nickel alloy is an attractive material due to its unique properties of shape memory effect, superior elasticity, and biocompatibility. Generally, Ti-Ni alloy powders are prepared from pure elemental powders of Ti and Ni as starting materials, but it is an energy-intensive process to obtain pure titanium. In this study, intermetallic compound TiNi powder passivated by TiO_x shell was prepared by directly reducing a commercial NiTiO₃ using CaH₂ reducing agent in a molten LiCl at 650 °C. Analyses by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the powder had a core-shell structure, with the core of TiNi and the shell of TiO_x-rich composition with scarce metallic Ni nicely catalyzing hydrogenation reactions with good recyclability and stability.

Catalytic dye degradation by novel phytofabricated silver/zinc oxide composites

Phytofabrication of the nanoparticles with exotic shape and size is an attractive area where nanostructures with noteworthy physicochemical and optoelectronic properties that can be significantly employed for photocatalytic dye degradation. In this study a medicinal plant, Plumbago auriculata leaf extract (PALE) was used to synthesize zinc oxide particles (ZnOPs) and silver mixed zinc oxide particles (ZnOAg1Ps, ZnOAg10Ps, ZnO10Ag1Ps) by varying the concentration of the metal precursor salts, i.e. zinc acetate and silver nitrate. The PALE showed significantly high concentrations of polyphenols, flavonoids, reducing sugar, starch, citric acid and plumbagin up to 314.3 ± 0.33, 960.0 ± 2.88, 121.3 ± 4.60, 150.3 ± 3.17, 109.4 ± 2.36, and 260.4 ± 8.90 μg/ml, respectively which might play an important role for green synthesis and capping of the phytogenic nanoparticles. The resulting particles were polydispersed which were mostly irregular, spherical, hexagonal and rod like in shape. The pristine ZnOPs exhibited a UV absorption band at 352 nm which shifted around 370 in the Ag mixed ZnOPs with concomitant appearance of peaks at 560 and 635 nm in ZnO10Ag1Ps and ZnOAg1Ps, respectively. The majority of the ZnOPs, ZnOAg1Ps, ZnOAg10Ps, and ZnO10Ag1Ps were 407, 98, 231, and 90 nm in size, respectively. Energy dispersive spectra confirmed the elemental composition of the particles while Fourier transform infrared spectra showed the involvement of the peptide and methyl functional groups in the synthesis and capping of the particles. The composites exhibited superior photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye, maximum being 95.7% by the ZnOAg10Ps with a rate constant of 0.0463 s−1 following a first order kinetic model. The present result clearly highlights that Ag mixed ZnOPs synthesized using Plumbago auriculata leaf extract (PALE) can play a critical role in removal of hazardous dyes from effluents of textile and dye industries. Further expanding the application of these phytofabricated composites will promote a significant complementary and alternative strategy for treating refractory pollutants from wastewater.

Effects of Phytogenically Synthesized Bimetallic Ag/ZnO Nanomaterials and Nitrogen-Based Fertilizers on Biochemical and Yield Attributes of Two Wheat Varieties

Wheat is the most important staple food worldwide, but wheat cultivation faces challenges from high food demand. Fertilizers are already in use to cope with the demand; however, more unconventional techniques may be required to enhance the efficiency of wheat cultivation. Nanotechnology offers one potential technique for improving plant growth and production by providing stimulating agents to the crop. In this study, plant-derived Ag/ZnO nanomaterials were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, SEM, EDX, FTIR, and XRD methods. Various concentrations of phytogenically synthesized Ag/ZnO nanomaterials (20, 40, 60, and 80 ppm) and nitrogen-based fertilizers (urea and ammonium sulphate 50 and 100 mg/L) were applied to wheat varieties (Galaxy-13 and Pak-13). The results obtained from this research showed that application of 60 ppm Ag/ZnO nanomaterials with nitrogenous fertilizers (50 and 100 mg/L) were more effective in improving biochemistry and increasing yield of wheat plants by reducing enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants (proline content, soluble sugar content, malondialdehyde, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase); and significantly increasing the protein content, number of grains per pot, spike length, 100-grain weight, grain yield per pot, and harvest index of both wheat varieties, compared to untreated plants. These findings allow us to propose Ag/ZnO nanomaterial formulation as a promising growth- and productivity-improvement strategy for wheat cultivation.

Enhanced antibacterial activity with increasing P doping ratio in CQDs

It is an urgent challenge to develop efficient antibacterial agents against resistant bacteria in the treatment of infectious diseases. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted much attention owing to their good stability, low toxicity and excellent biocompatibility. In this work, CQDs doped with different contents of the element phosphorus (P) were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method using valine as a carbon source, triethylamine as a nitrogen source and different volumes of phosphoric acid as a phosphorus source. The average diameter and the surface charge could be regulated from 2.89 nm to 1.56 nm and +2.58 mV to +5.47 mV by increasing the content of the element P in these CQDs. Importantly, these CQDs showed effective bacterial inhibition against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) decreased from 0.71, to 0.51 to 0.18 mg mL⁻¹ on E. coli and S. aureus with the increase of P element content. Furthermore, the morphologies of E. coli cells and S. aureus were damaged and became irregular upon treatment with these CQDs. The results of singlet oxygen (¹O₂) detection demonstrated that intracellular ¹O₂ was generated during the antibacterial process. We speculated that bacterial inhibition induced by these CQDs was accompanied by disruption of permeability and structural integrity, owing to strong electrostatic interactions between negatively charged bacteria and positively charged CQDs and production of singlet oxygen of CQDs. Together, this study indicates that the CQDs can be a candidate to treat resistant bacterial infections and may improve the understanding of killing pathogens by antibacterial CQD drugs.
