A europium metal-organic framework for dual Fe3+ ion and pH sensing

[FeIIICl(TMPPH2)][FeIIICl4]2: A Stand-Alone Molecular Nanomedicine That Induces High Cytotoxicity by Ferroptosis

Developing clinically meaningful nanomedicines for cancer therapy requires the drugs to be effective, safe, simple, cheap, and easy to store. In the present work, we report that a simple cationic Fe(III)-rich salt of [FeIIICl(TMPPH2)][FeIIICl4]2 (Fe-TMPP) exhibits a superior anticancer performance on a broad spectrum of cancer cell lines, including breast, colorectal cancer, liver, pancreatic, prostate, and gastric cancers, with half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values in the range of 0.098-3.97 μM (0.066-2.68 μg mL-1), comparable to the best-reported medicines. Fe-TMPP can form stand-alone nanoparticles in water without the need for extra surface modification or organic-solvent-assisted antisolvent precipitation. Critically, Fe-TMPP is TME-responsive (TME = tumor microenvironment), and can only elicit its function in the TME with overexpressed H2O2, converting H2O2 to the cytotoxic •OH to oxidize the phospholipid of the cancer cell membrane, causing ferroptosis, a programmed cell death process of cancer cells.

Understanding the photo-sensitive essence of organic-inorganic hybrids for the targeted detection of azithromycin

Being a macrolide antibiotic, the antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties of azithromycin (AZM) were taken advantage of during the COVID-19 pandemic which led to the overuse of AZM resulting in excessive release and accumulation in the waterways and ecosystem causing unpleasant threats to humankind. This demands the necessity for a highly sensitive material being capable of recognizing AZM in wastewater. Mindful of the optical attributes of organic ligand structures, we have constructed a hybrid material by chelating Zn2+ with pyridyl benzimidazole (PBI). The prepared sensor material ZnPBI was characterized using various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques including XRD, FT-IR, HR-SEM, HR-TEM, etc. The proposed sensor material exhibited proficient detection performance selectively towards AZM with a very low detection limit of 72 nM. Two linear ranges between 0 - 70 μM and 70-100 μM were observed corresponding to two different mechanistic pathways. To the best of our knowledge, the utilization of a metal-organic complex (MOC) for the fluorometric detection of AZM has not been explored so far. It is creditworthy to cite that the long-term structural stability of the sensor material was maintained for 100 days in water and it can be reused three times without any depreciation in the sensing activity. A combination of energy transfer routes, adsorption and electrostatic interactions for AZM detection are described experimentally and theoretically which provides insights into the role of MOC as sensing probes.

Rare Earth -MOFs: From Synthesis to Their Deployment for Amine-Sensing Application in Aqueous Media

The pursuit of developing sensors, characterized by their fluorescence-intensity enhancement or "turn-on" behavior, for accurately detecting noxious small molecules, such as amines, at minimal levels remains a significant challenge. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising candidates as sensors as a result of their diverse structural features and tunable properties. This study introduces the rational synthesis of a new highly coordinated (6,12)-connected rare earth (RE) alb-MOF-3, by combining the nonanuclear 12-connected hexagonal prismatic building units, [RE9(μ3-O)2(μ3-X)12(OH)2(H2O)7(O2C-)12], with the 6-connected rigid trigonal prismatic extended triptycene ligand. The resulting Y-alb-MOF-3 material is distinguished by its high microporosity and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of approximately 1282 m2/g, which offers notable hydrolytic stability. Remarkably, it demonstrates selective detection capabilities for primary aliphatic amines in aqueous media, as evidenced by fluorescence turn-on behavior and photoluminescence (PL) titration measurements. This work emphasizes the potential of MOFs as sensors in advancing their selectivity and sensitivity toward various analytes.

van der Waals interaction energies for ferric ion sensors using prismatic and cylindrical pore approximations for a MOF pore

Using the Lennard-Jones potential, we determine analytical expressions for van der Waals interaction energies between a point and a rectangular prism-shaped pore, writing them in terms of standard elementary functions. The parameter values for a new ferric ion sensor are used to compare these calculations with the cylindrical pore approximation for the interactions between an ion and a metal organic framework (MOF) pore. The results using the prismatic pore approximation predict the same qualitative outcomes as a cylindrical pore approximation. However, the prismatic approximation predicts lower magnitudes for both the interaction potential energy minimum and the force maximum, since the average distance from the centre-line to the surface of the prism is greater. We suggest that in some circumstances it is sufficient to use the simpler cylindrical approximation, provided that the cylinder radius is chosen so that the cross-sectional area is equal to the area of the prism pore opening. However, atoms at the nodes should remain approximated by semi-infinite lines. We also determine the interaction between a second ferric ion and a blocked MOF pore; as expected, the second ferric ion experiences a force away from the pore, implying that approaching ferric ions can only occupy vacant MOF pores.

Metal organic frameworks as promising sensing tools for electrochemical detection of persistent heavy metal ions from water matrices: A concise review

Water bodies are being polluted rapidly by disposal of toxic chemicals with their huge entrance into drinking water supply chain. Among these pollutants, heavy metal ions (HMIs) are the most challenging one due to their non-biodegradability, toxicity, and ability to biologically hoard in ecological systems, thus posing a foremost danger to human health. This can be addressed by robust, sensitive, selective, and reliable sensing of metal ions which can be achieved by Metal organic frameworks (MOF) based electrochemical sensors. In the present era, MOFs have caught greater interest in a variety of applications including sensing of hazardous pollutants such as heavy metal ions. So, in this review article, types, synthesis and working mechanism of MOF based sensors is explained to give general overview with updated literature. First time, detailed study is done for sensing of metal ions such as chromium, mercury, zinc, copper, manganese, palladium, lead, iron, cadmium and lanthanide by MOFs based electrochemical sensors. The use of MOFs as electrochemical sensors has attractive success story along with some challenges of the area. Considering these challenges, we attempted to highlight the milestone achieved and shortcomings along with future prospective of the MOFs for employing it in electrochemical sensing devices for HMIs. Finally, challenges and future prospects have been discussed to promote the development of MOFs-based sensors in future.

Luminescent Cd coordination polymer based on thiazole as a dual-responsive chemosensor for 4-nitroaniline and CrO42- in water

A novel highly fluorescent cadmium metal-organic framework, [Cd (DPTTZ) (OBA)] (IUST-3), synthesized by using two linkers 2, 5-di (pyridine-4-yl) thiazolo [5, 4-d] thiazole (DPTTZ) and 4, 4'-oxybis (benzoic acid) (OBA) simultaneously, which exhibits a two-dimensional framework. The characteristics of this Cd-MOF were investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetry analysis. The IUST-3 exhibits excellent luminescence property and good stability in water. Luminescent experiments indicate that the IUST-3 has remarkable sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of 4-nitroaniline (4-NA), and CrO₄^2- anion with K_SV = 1.03 × 10⁵ M^-1 (4-NA) and K_SV = 2.93 × 10⁴ M^-1 (CrO₄^2-) and low limit of detection 0.52 µM (4-NA) and 1.37 µM (CrO₄^2-). In addition, the possible fluorescence quenching mechanism was explored in this paper.
