Seasonal variations in presenting symptoms and signs of dry eye disease in Norway

Environmental and Occupational Triggers of Dry Eye Symptoms in the Ahsa Region of Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study

Objective

This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the associations between environmental and occupational factors and the prevalence of dry eye symptoms among participants from the Ahsa region of Saudi Arabia.

Methods

Participants from urban, rural, and suburban areas seeking medical care at primary health centers were recruited through systematic random sampling. Data on demographics, exposures, and ocular health were captured using a structured questionnaire. Dry eye symptoms were evaluated using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Impact of Dry Eye on Everyday Life (IDEEL), and Symptom Assessment in Dry Eye (SANDE) questionnaires. Logistic regression analysis examined the relationships between environmental/occupational factors and the prevalence of dry eye symptoms.

Results

Key exposures included particulate matter (PM) (60%), low humidity (55%), wind/dust (50%), prolonged computer use (65%), and chemical irritants (45%). These factors were significantly associated with an increased prevalence of dry eye symptoms, with the following odds ratios (ORs): PM (1.85, 95% CI: 1.35-2.52), low humidity (1.45, 95% CI: 1.05-2.00), wind and dust (1.60, 95% CI: 1.20-2.14), prolonged computer use (2.10, 95% CI: 1.55-2.85), and chemical irritants (1.75, 95% CI: 1.30-2.35). All associations were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The use of protective equipment was associated with reduced odds of dry eye symptoms (OR 0.60, 95% CI: 0.42-0.85, p = 0.03).

Conclusion

This study identifies significant associations between specific environmental and occupational exposures and the prevalence of dry eye symptoms. Reducing modifiable exposures through policy, workplace enhancements, and clinical preventative strategies is essential to mitigate the burden of dry eye symptoms related to modern lifestyles and technology.

Seasonality of Tear Meniscus Volume and Dry Eye-Related Symptoms - A Cross-Sectional Retrospective Cohort Study

Purpose

We aimed to determine the seasonal variation in the tear meniscus level on strip meniscometry and its association with ocular parameters and symptoms. In Japan, there are four distinct seasons characterized by marked differences in temperature and humidity, which may contribute to an observed seasonality of ocular surface symptoms.

Methods

We conducted a cross-sectional study in two Japanese clinics and recruited first-visit patients for 3 years. Tear strip meniscometry, tear break-up time (BUT), Schirmer test, and corneal staining were examined, and major ocular symptoms (dryness, irritation, pain, fatigue, blurred vision, and photophobia) were determined through interviews.

Results

The 1196 participants had a mean age of 58.9±15.2 years; 37.1% were of male sex. Strip meniscometry values and BUT revealed significant seasonality with one-way analysis of variance. The mean strip meniscometry value (mm) was 2.15±2.59 in spring (p=0.025 vs winter), 2.37±2.79 in summer (p<0.001), 2.38±2.80 in fall (p<0.001), and 1.64±2.29 in winter. Regression analysis indicated that strip meniscometry levels were correlated with BUT (p<0.001), Schirmer test values (p<0.001), corneal staining scores (p=0.022), and presence of dryness (p<0.001).

Conclusion

Strip meniscometry values exhibited distinct seasonality, being lowest in winter when the ambient condition is dry and cool, and were correlated with BUT, Schirmer test values, corneal staining scores, and the presence of subjective dryness.

Eye disease and international travel: a critical literature review and practical recommendations

RATIONALE FOR REVIEW

Eye diseases pose a significant public health and economic burden, particularly for travellers exposed to ocular hazards who may lack access to specialist eye care. This article offers an evidence-based review for travel-health practitioners, with a particular emphasis on ocular infections and trauma that are more prevalent among travellers. Providing an overview of these issues will allow travel health practitioners to comprehensively address ophthalmic considerations of travel.

METHODS

A systematic literature search was conducted on PubMed and Embase electronic databases, using keywords related to travel medicine and ophthalmology. Inclusion was based on the relevant contribution to epidemiology, aetiology, diagnostics, management and long-term consequences of travel-related eye conditions. The data were analysed using narrative synthesis.

KEY FINDINGS

This literature review highlighted that various travel-related eye conditions may occur. Travellers should be aware of the risk of travel-related ocular complications, which can arise from ocular infections, high-risk activities, high altitude and space travel. The economic and logistical challenges associated with medical tourism for ophthalmic procedures are discussed. For travellers with pre-existing eye conditions or visual impairment, careful planning may be needed to promote eye health and ensure safety of travel.

CONCLUSIONS

Travel medicine practitioners should have a comprehensive understanding of the major ocular risks associated with overseas travel, including eye infections, eye injuries and solar eye damage. Further research in this area can enhance overall wellness and alleviate the burden of ocular diseases on travellers. Evidence-based guidelines based on research can also improve the quality of care and prevent long-term vision problems.
