Research on spatial and temporal differences of carbon emissions and influencing factors in eight economic regions of China based on LMDI model

Navigating the path to dual carbon goals: Understanding the driving forces of energy transition welfare performance

China's double carbon target aims to improve human well-being and sustainable development. Energy transformation welfare performance (ETWP) is the efficiency of energy transition (ET) in enhancing human well-being. ETWP considers both human well-being and sustainable development. Research on its driving force is helpful in achieving the double carbon goal. Thus, this paper used Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index Model, Fixed Panel Regression Model and Grey Relational Analysis Model to analyze China's ETWP from 2006 to 2022 and predicted ETWP of 31 provinces from 2023 to 2030. The results showed that: (1) ETWP had two rising periods in 2006-2014 and 2015-2022. (2) The government's rationalization policy on energy and environment and technological innovation ability were fundamental driving forces for improving ETWP. (3) There were obvious spatial and temporal distinctions in ETWP, and it would bring out different degrees in most areas. Thus, ET should be promoted by improving the ecological environment and resource utilization efficiency; The importance of the role of scientific and technological innovation and policies should be focused on in promoting ETWP; ET policies based on local developments should be formulated and the energy structure should be changed.

Social and economic driving forces of recent CO2 emissions in three major BRICS economies

The study examines the driving factors of total energy-related and power-related (electricity-heat) CO2 emissions for China, India and Brazil, three BRICS countries with vital economic and demographic dynamics. The paper applies decoupling and decomposition analysis in order to investigate the influence of those factors that are prominent in the contemporary literature as well as factors reflecting important social and demographic dynamics which affect the ecological footprint of society. Household size and number of households are introduced into the relevant literature for the first time to reflect demographic factors with substantially different trends from population size, the predominant factor in the existing literature. This novelty together with the simultaneous application of decoupling and decomposition analysis adds importance to the findings of the study, which covers the period of 2000-2018. The results show that increasing income and population significantly enlarge the energy-related CO2 emissions. Household size, number of households and income effects are crucial in the increase of power-related CO2 emissions. The crucial factor for the decrease of energy-related CO2 emissions is the decreasing energy intensity, while for power-related CO2 emissions it is the emission factor effect reflecting the recent shift towards less carbon intensive energy types.

An analysis and prediction of carbon emissions in the sphere of consumer lifestyles in Beijing

In alignment with China's "dual carbon" goals and its quest to build an ecological civilization, this study scrutinizes the carbon emissions derived from consumer lifestyles, with a particular focus on Beijing, a high-consumption urban metropolis. Utilizing the expanded STIRPAT model and ridge regression, factors such as permanent population, per capita consumption expenditure, energy intensity, energy structure, and consumption structure are examined to evaluate their impact on lifestyle-associated carbon emissions. A scenario analysis is also conducted to project future carbon emissions in Beijing. From 2010 to 2020, there was an overall upward trend in lifestyle-associated carbon emissions, up to a maximum of 87.8260 million tons. Indirect consumption-related carbon emissions, particularly those associated with residential and transportation-related consumption, constituted the primary sources. The most influential factors on carbon emissions were found to be the consumption structure. Notably, adopting a low-carbon consumption mindset and an optimized consumption structure could foster significant carbon reduction. Projections suggest that by 2035, carbon emissions due to residents' consumption could decline by 39.72% under a low-carbon consumption scenario and by 48.74% under a coordinated development scenario. Future efforts should prioritize promoting green, low-carbon living, refining consumption structure and practices, curbing excessive housing consumption, improving energy structure, and raising technological and energy efficiency standards.
