Regional common prosperity level and its spatial relationship with carbon emission intensity in China

Analyzing the process of achieving common wealth for different groups in China based on the opportunity advantage perspective of income distribution

Realizing the common wealth of all people is the essential requirement of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Measuring the process of realizing common wealth and the differences between groups is one of the important issues that need to be addressed urgently. In order to reasonably measure the process of realizing common wealth in China, on the premise of horizontal comparability and vertical consistency, the principles of comparability and consistency are introduced, and a comparative method of opportunity advantage based on income distribution is proposed from the perspective of opportunity equity. Using the 2012-2020 CFPS data to measure and test the opportunity advantages and their differences across regions and groups in China. The study found, firstly, that the opportunity advantage persists but tends to diminish across groups, with the more educated group having a more pronounced opportunity advantage, but that this advantage is diminishing over time. Secondly, the doctoral degree group has a greater probability of earning higher incomes, followed by the master's and bachelor's degree groups, but this opportunity advantage, i.e., the probability of earning higher incomes, is diminishing, i.e., the education dividend is diminishing. Third, the difference in opportunity advantage between urban and rural areas still exists, as evidenced by the greater probability of higher incomes in towns than in rural areas, but this advantage has narrowed further over time, with a clear process of urban-rural integration. Fourthly, in terms of gender, men have a certain opportunity advantage over women, but this difference is not significant. Fifthly, in the context of education levels, gender and urban/rural subgroups, under the framework proposed in this paper, China has achieved some success in the process of realizing the common wealth, and is showing a steady upward trend.

The trajectory of carbon emissions and terrestrial carbon sinks at the provincial level in China

Global greenhouse gas emission, major factor driving climate change, has been increasing since nineteenth century. STIRPAT and CEVSA models were performed to estimate the carbon emission peaks and terrestrial ecosystem carbon sinks at the provincial level in China, respectively. Utilizing the growth characteristics and the peak time criteria for the period 1997-2019, the patterns of energy consumption and CO2 emissions from 30 Chinese provinces are categorized into four groups: (i) one-stage increase (5 provinces), (ii) two-stage increase (10 provinces), (iii) maximum around 2013 (13 provinces), and (iv) maximum around 2017 (2 provinces). According to the STIRPAT model, the anticipated time of peak CO2 emissions for Beijing from the third group is ~ 2025 in both business-as-usual and high-speed scenarios. For Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region from the first group and Zhejiang province from the second group, the expected peak time is 2025 to 2030. Shaanxi province from the fourth group is likely to reach carbon emission peak before 2030. The inventory-based estimate of China's terrestrial carbon sink is ~ 266.2 Tg C/a during the period 1982-2015, offsetting 18.3% of contemporary CO2 emissions. The province-level CO2 emissions, peak emissions and terrestrial carbon sinks estimates presented here are significant for those concerned with carbon neutrality.

Cross-sensitivity analysis of land use transition and ecological service values in rare earth mining areas in southern China

Exploring the cross-sensitivity between land use transformation and ecological service values in rare earth mining areas is of great significance for the development of ecological protection and restoration in rare earth mining areas. To study the impact of land use changes on ecosystem service functions in rare earth mining areas, firstly, the land use change trends in the study area from 2009 to 2019 were analyzed using the land transfer matrix; then the distribution of ecosystem service values and the flow direction of ecosystem service values in the study area were measured based on the ecosystem service value equivalents; a spatial autocorrelation analysis was done on the ecosystem service values to explore their spatial distribution patterns; and finally, the cross-sensitivity coefficient was used to quantitatively assess the extent and direction of the impact of land use change on ecosystem service values. The results show that the land use types in the study area are mainly forest land and farmland, with woodland accounting for the highest proportion of the study area. The ESV changes in the study area are consistent with the trend of land use transformation, with the overall increase and decrease being comparable, and the decrease in ESV is mainly concentrated in the areas with a large increase in mining land and construction land; during the study period, the study area was significantly reduced with low-low cluster areas and the ecological environment was improved; from 2009 to 2014, the ecological sensitivity coefficient is more variable, and is more sensitive to the net conversion between water and desert, from 2014 to 2019, the ecological sensitivity coefficient is less variable, and the most sensitive is the net conversion between cultivated land and water. The study area should be reasonably developed for rare earth resources and the ecological environment around the mining area should be reasonably protected to build an ecological security pattern.
