Open questions on the photophysics of ultrafast singlet fission

Intramolecular Singlet Fission Coupled with Intermolecular Triplet Separation as a Strategy to Achieve High Triplet Yields in Fluorene-Based Small Molecules

In this work, detailed experimental proof and in-depth analysis of the singlet fission (SF) mechanism, operative in fluorene-based small molecules, are carried out by employing advanced time-resolved spectroscopies with nanosecond and femtosecond resolution. The investigation of the effect of solution concentration and solvent viscosity together with temperature and excitation wavelength demonstrates INTRAmolecular formation of the correlated triplet pair followed by INTERmolecular independent triplet separation via a "super-diffusional" triplet-triplet transfer process. This unconventional INTRA- to INTERmolecular SF may be considered an "ideal" mechanism. Indeed, intramolecular formation of the correlated triplet pair is here interestingly proved for small molecules rather than large multichromophoric systems, allowing easy synthesis and processability while maintaining good control over the SF process. On the other hand, the intermolecular triplet separation may be exploited to achieve high triplet quantum yields in these new SF small molecules.

Generalization of the Tensor Product Selected CI Method for Molecular Excited States

In a recent paper [JCTC, 2020, 16, 6098], we introduced a new approach for accurately approximating full CI ground states in large electronic active-spaces called Tensor Product Selected CI (TPSCI). In TPSCI, a large orbital active space is first partitioned into disjoint sets (clusters) for which the exact, local many-body eigenstates are obtained. Tensor products of these locally correlated many-body states are taken as the basis for the full, global Hilbert space. By folding correlation into the basis states themselves, the low-energy eigenstates become increasingly sparse, creating a more compact selected CI expansion. While we demonstrated that this approach can improve accuracy for a variety of systems, there is even greater potential for applications to excited states, particularly those which have some excited-state character. In this paper, we report on the accuracy of TPSCI for excited states, including a far more efficient implementation in the Julia programming language. In traditional SCI methods that use a Slater determinant basis, accurate excitation energies are obtained only after a linear extrapolation and at a large computational cost. We find that TPSCI with perturbative corrections provides accurate excitation energies for several excited states of various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with respect to the extrapolated result (i.e., near exact result). Further, we use TPSCI to report highly accurate estimates of the lowest 31 eigenstates for a tetracene tetramer system with an active space of 40 electrons in 40 orbitals, giving direct access to the initial bright states and the resulting 18 doubly excited (biexcitonic) states.

Substituent Effect on Vibrationally Resolved Absorption Spectra and Exciton Dynamics of Dipyrrolonaphthyridinedione Aggregates

Dipyrrolonaphthyridinedione (DPND) thin films exhibit interesting photophysical properties and singlet fission (SF) processes. A recent experimental work found that the alkyl substitution in the DPND skeleton has the remarkable influence on the characteristics of electronic absorption spectra and SF rates. Here, we theoretically elucidate the microscopic mechanism of the substituent effect on the optical properties and exciton dynamics of materials by combining the electronic structure calculations and the quantum dynamics simulations. The results show that the alkyl substituent has a minor effect on the single molecular properties but dramatically changes those of DPND aggregates via varying the intermolecular interactions. The aggregates of DPND with and without alkyl side chains exhibit the more likely characters of H-type aggregations. In the former (DPND6), the weak degree of mixing of intramolecular localized excited (LE) states and intermolecular charge transfer (CT) states makes the low-energy absorption band possess the predominant optical absorption, while in the latter (DPND), the CT and LE states are close in energy, together with their strong interaction, resulting in the substantial state-mixing, so that its two low-energy absorption bands have nearly equal oscillator strengths and a wide energy spacing of more than 0.5 eV. The simulation of exciton dynamics elucidates that the photoinitiated states in both aggregates cannot generate the free charge carrier because of the lack of enough driving forces. However, the population exchanges between LE and CT states in DPND aggregates are much faster than in DPND6 aggregates, indicating the different SF behaviors, consistent with the experimental observation.

Optimizing the Thermodynamics and Kinetics of the Triplet-Pair Dissociation in Donor-Acceptor Copolymers for Intramolecular Singlet Fission

Singlet fission (SF) is a two-step process in which a singlet splits into two triplets throughout the so-called correlated triplet-pair (¹TT) state. Intramolecular SF (iSF) materials, in particular, have attracted growing interest as they can be easily implemented in single-junction solar cells and boost their power conversion efficiency. Still, the potential of iSF materials such as polymers and oligomers for photovoltaic applications has been partially hindered by their ability to go beyond the ¹TT intermediate and generate free triplets, whose mechanism remains poorly understood. In this work, the main aspects governing the ¹TT dissociation in donor-acceptor copolymers and the key features that optimize this process are exposed. First, we show that both thermodynamics and kinetics play a crucial role in the intramolecular triplet-pair separation and second, we uncover the inherent flexibility of the donor unit as the fundamental ingredient to optimize them simultaneously. Overall, these results provide a better understanding of the intramolecular ¹TT dissociation process and establish a new paradigm for the development of novel iSF active materials.

Resolving electron injection from singlet fission-borne triplets into mesoporous transparent conducting oxides

Photoinduced electron transfer into mesoporous oxide substrates is well-known to occur efficiently for both singlet and triplet excited states in conventional metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) dyes. However, in all-organic dyes that have the potential for producing two triplet states from one absorbed photon, called singlet fission dyes, the dynamics of electron injection from singlet vs. triplet excited states has not been elucidated. Using applied bias transient absorption spectroscopy with an anthradithiophene-based chromophore (ADT-COOH) adsorbed to mesoporous indium tin oxide (nanoITO), we modulate the driving force and observe changes in electron injection dynamics. ADT-COOH is known to undergo fast triplet pair formation in solid-state films. We find that the electronic coupling at the interface is roughly one order of magnitude weaker for triplet vs. singlet electron injection, which is potentially related to the highly localized nature of triplets without significant charge-transfer character. Through the use of applied bias on nanoITO:ADT-COOH films, we map the electron injection rate constant dependence on driving force, finding negligible injection from triplets at zero bias due to competing recombination channels. However, at driving forces greater than -0.6 eV, electron injection from the triplet accelerates and clearly produces a trend with increased applied bias that matches predictions from Marcus theory with a metallic acceptor.
