Endoscopic Surgical Excision of Ectopic Tooth in Left Nasal Cavity

Ectopic teeth in the nasal cavity are a rare phenomenon. They are often associated with a variety of symptoms and future complications, ranging from nasal crusting and obstruction to chronic infections. In most reported cases, their removal is recommended. Here, we report a case of an ectopic intranasal tooth in a symptomatic adult. The tooth was removed endoscopically with good results.

Ectopic Deciduous Maxillary Tooth in the Nasal Cavity Following Trauma

Several cases of the ectopic supernumerary tooth in the nasal cavity have been reported; however, an eruption of the primary maxillary tooth in the nose following trauma is extremely rare. Clinical evaluation and discriminating features on CT imaging, particularly with bone window setting, are sufficient to confirm the diagnosis. We discuss a case of deciduous central maxillary incisor in the nasal cavity and specifically focus on its clinical and radiological presentation. None of the previous authors have discussed probable theories of the post-traumatic intranasal tooth; we consider two possible theories which might be responsible for the ectopic intranasal tooth after trauma. Additionally, we discuss pertinent features which help distinguish ectopic deciduous tooth from the supernumerary tooth.

Osteoma and Ectopic Tooth of the Left Maxillary Sinus: A Unique Coexistence

BACKGROUND

Ectopic eruption of a tooth or osteoma rarely occurs within the maxillary sinus. Coexistence of these two rare entities in the maxillary sinus has never been reported in the English literature.

CASE REPORT

Herein, we present a 21 year-old male patient with osteoma and ectopic tooth in the left maxillary sinus treated with the removal of the ectopic tooth by endoscopic sinus surgery and excision of the osteoma by the Caldwell-Luc procedure.

CONCLUSION

Unique coexistence of two different entities in the maxillary sinus is most likely due to pediatric facial trauma. Pediatric patients with maxillofacial trauma should be carefully watched for dental injury both clinically and radiologically.

Case presentation of an intranasal ectopic tooth in a pediatric patient

An ectopic tooth in the nasal cavity is a rare phenomenon, especially on the inferior turbinate. In most of the reported cases, no etiological explanation of the intranasal teeth has been suggested or found. In children, intranasal ectopic teeth are usually associated with cleft lip and alveolus. Here, we report a rare case of a pediatric patient with unilateral nasal obstruction due to an intranasal ectopic tooth originating from the inferior turbinate without any facial and dental deformities. This case is unique due to the unusual location of the ectopic tooth and its presentation in a child without facial and dental deformities.

'Intranasal toothache': case report

OBJECTIVE

This paper describes a patient with recurrent unilateral nasal discomfort and pain due to an intranasal tooth. A short overview of the literature is provided in relation to the aetiology, symptomatology, diagnosis and treatment of intranasal teeth.

CASE REPORT

A 26-year-old man was referred with a history of recurrent left-sided nasal obstruction, facial pain and discomfort, and chronic purulent rhinorrhoea. Computed tomography revealed a nasal tooth, which was likely to have been the cause of these symptoms. After transnasal surgical extraction under endoscopic guidance, the patient was relieved of his complaints (at the one-year follow up).

CONCLUSION

An ectopic tooth in the nasal cavity is a rare phenomenon, and in most cases the cause of an intranasal tooth remains unclear. The treatment of an intranasal tooth entails surgical extraction even though such teeth may remain asymptomatic; several cases have illustrated the potential significant morbidity associated with their occurrence.

Chronic rhinorrhea revealing an actinomycotic rhinolithiasis with ectopic tooth

Intranasal ectopic tooth is a rare nidus for a rhinolith where local infection may be concomitant. No description of the triple association 'actinomycotic rhinolithiasis ectopic tooth' could be found in the medical literature. Classically, the Actinomyces species are sensitive to regimens of penicillin from 6 to 12 months or longer. Immunocompetent patients can benefit from shorter courses of antibiotic therapy, such as ciprofloxacin, with a favourable outcome. The authors describe the case of a 25-year-old man who presented with an actinomycosis chronic discharge revealing actinomycosis associated with rhinolithiasis and ectopic tooth. They attempt to explain the likely mechanism of occurrence of this triple association.
