Prevalence of anemia at diagnosis of pediatric chronic myeloid leukemia and prognostic impact on the disease course. Ann Hematol 2023; 102:563-570. Abstract
The clinical presentation of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) at diagnosis differs in children compared to adults. At younger age, anemia appears to be frequent at diagnosis, but its prevalence and its impact on prognosis are not well known. In the International Registry of Childhood CML, we selected children and adolescents in chronic phase at diagnosis of CML and treated upfront with imatinib. We examined their hemoglobin level at diagnosis according to the WHO grades to assess the prevalence of anemia and its impact on response to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). Data on 430 patients were included. Anemia at diagnosis was observed in 350 patients (81%), with a mean hemoglobin level of 96.4 g/l (SD 23.6). Among them, 182 patients (52%) presented with moderate anemia and 110 (31%) with severe anemia while 58 (17%) had mild anemia. Compared with mild and no anemia, moderate and severe forms were significantly associated with younger age at diagnosis, asthenia, splenomegaly, and increased leukocyte and basophil counts. Delays in achieving major and deep molecular responses were significantly increased for patients with moderate and severe anemia, and also failure of imatinib treatment was more frequent in these two sub-cohorts. However, hemoglobin level was not significantly associated with survival. Anemia at diagnosis of pediatric CML was frequent and may be considered as a prognostic factor.

Abstract
Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical, biological, and molecular characteristics at diagnosis in children and adolescents with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) in the Indian scenario at our tertiary patient care center. Subjects and Methods: We evaluated 51 children and adolescents with CML registered at our clinic, from January 2007 to December 2015. The mean and median of various parameters were calculated using a Microsoft excel sheet and SPSS software version 16. Results: The median age of presentation in children was 16 years; 92.2% of them were older than 10 years, with a higher prevalence in boys than girls (gender ratio 2.6:1). The symptoms at presentation were fatigue, fever, awareness of mass due to splenomegaly, and bleeding manifestations. One patient presented with Bell's palsy. Markedly raised leukocyte counts were present in 29.4% patients (median white blood cell count >400 × 109/L). Most of the patients presented in the chronic phase of the disease, four each were in accelerated phase and blast crisis, respectively. Majority of patients were categorized as intermediate risk as per Sokal and Hansford score. About 60.7% of these pediatric patients fell in low-risk category as per European Treatment and Outcome Study score at baseline. A predominance of transcript P210-b3a2 (68%) was observed in the children who were studied for the type of chimeric BCR-ABL mRNA. Conclusions: This is one of the most recent reported series of CML in children and adolescents from India highlighting the difference in presentation from adults; mainly hepatomegaly, bleeding manifestations, and higher leukocyte count. Presence of b3a3 transcript of p210 breakpoint of BCR-ABL was more common in children (68%) than b2a2 transcript (32%) when compared to adults as recently described in a study from India, which may explain the differences at presentation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are more likely to have chemotherapy-related complications than children. In addition, several reports have shown that infections account for most of the therapy-related mortality during cancer treatment in AYAs. Thus, we hypothesized that chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression is more severe in AYAs than in children, and the state of neutropenia was compared between children and AYAs using the D-index, a numerical value calculated from the duration and depth of neutropenia. PROCEDURE This study retrospectively analyzed 95 patients newly diagnosed with ALL at our institution between 2007 and 2019. Of these, 81 were children (<15 years old) and 14 were AYAs (≥15 years old). The D-index and duration of neutropenia during induction chemotherapy for ALL were compared between children and AYAs. RESULTS The median D-index of children was significantly higher than that of AYAs (8187 vs 6446, respectively, P = .017). Moreover, the median duration of neutropenia was also significantly longer in children than in AYAs (24.0 days vs 11.5 days, respectively, P = .007). CONCLUSION Contrary to our expectations, myelosuppressive toxicity during induction chemotherapy for ALL was more severe in children than in AYAs.

Abstract
The therapeutic approach to Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) has changed since the advent of the tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) imatinib, which was then followed by the second generation TKIs dasatinib, nilotinib, and, finally, by ponatinib, a third-generation drug. At present, these therapeutic options represent the first-line treatment for adults. Based on clinical experience, imatinb, dasatinib, and nilotinib have been approved for children even though the studies that were concerned with efficacy and safety toward pediatric patients are still awaiting more specific and high-quality data. In this scenario, it is of utmost importance to prospectively validate data extrapolated from adult studies to set a standard therapeutic management for pediatric CML by employing appropriate formulations on the basis of pediatric clinical trials, which allow a careful monitoring of TKI-induced adverse effects especially in growing children exposed to long-term therapy.

Abstract
Imatinib results in growth retardation in children with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The study was planned to assess the GHRH-GH-IGF1 axis in children with CML, receiving Imatinib and to evaluate the efficacy of human growth hormone (hGH) therapy. Twenty children with CML, receiving Imatinib for a period exceeding 6 months, with resultant growth retardation were included. The GHRH-GH-IGF1 axis was assessed using growth hormone stimulation tests. IGF-1 generation test was performed for the evaluation of GH insensitivity. The mean age at inclusion was 15.2 years. The mean duration of treatment with Imatinib was 5.7 years. The mean decrease in height SDS since the start of Imatinib was -0.95 (p = 0.008). IGF-1 SDS was <-2 in all the patients. 71.4% of patients had a suboptimal GH response following stimulation with GHRH-Arginine. All patients had stimulable, although a delayed GH response with glucagon stimulation. 20% of patients had GH insensitivity. Four patients were treated with hGH for a mean duration of 5.75 months, achieved normalization of IGF-1 levels and improvement in growth velocity improved from 0.21 to 0.86 cm/month. Imatinib results in an acquired neurosecretory defect in GH secretion. Treatment with growth hormone leads to an improvement in growth velocity and normalization of IGF-1.

Abstract
A better understanding of factors associated with early death and survival among children, adolescents and young adults with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) may guide health policy aimed at improving outcomes in these patients. We examined trends in early death and survival among 3935 patients aged 0-39 years with de novo AML in California during 1988-2011 and investigated the associations between sociodemographic and selected clinical factors and outcomes. Early death declined from 9·7% in 1988-1995 to 7·1% in 2004-2011 (P = 0·062), and survival improved substantially over time. However, 5-year survival was still only 50% (95% confidence interval 47-53%) even in the most recent treatment period (2004-2011). Overall, the main factors associated with poor outcomes were older age at diagnosis, treatment at hospitals not affiliated with National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centres, and black race/ethnicity. For patients diagnosed during 1996-2011, survival was lower among those who lacked health insurance compared to those with public or private insurance. We conclude that mortality after AML remained strikingly high in California and increased with age. Possible strategies to improve outcomes include wider insurance coverage and treatment at specialized cancer centres.

Abstract
Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is rare among childhood leukemias. Its incidence increases with age, from 0.09/100 000 at ≤15 years old to 7.88/100 000 at ≥75 years old. There are several biological and clinical differences between pediatric and adult CML. Markedly increased leukocyte count and a higher incidence of splenomegaly are characteristic features at diagnosis in pediatric patients. The therapeutic approach to CML has changed since the introduction of the tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) imatinib, followed by dasatinib and nilotinib. Given the efficacy of TKI in adult CML, TKI are regarded as the established first-line treatment in adult patients. In 2011, a prospective phase IV study in pediatric patients showed the excellent efficacy and safety of imatinib. Imatinib is also accepted as a first-line option for childhood chronic phase CML. Although the efficacy of dasatinib and nilotinib reported in adult studies seems very attractive for pediatric patients, neither drug has been prospectively investigated in a large pediatric cohort. TKI are designed to inhibit BCR-ABL1 kinase, but they have unfavorable effects, so-called "off-target" complications, such as growth impairment. Long-term morbidity due to TKI is unknown. Furthermore, the adverse effects on growing children have not been clearly elucidated, even though the exposure period to imatinib is relatively short. To establish the standard therapeutic management for pediatric CML, it is important to prospectively confirm the attractive outcomes obtained in adult studies via pediatric clinical trials with a careful monitoring system for TKI-induced adverse effects, especially in growing children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The details of leukostasis in children and adolescents with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) are unknown. This study determined the characteristics of leukostasis in children and adolescents with CML. PROCEDURE A total of 256 cases from a retrospective study of patients with CML conducted by the Japanese Pediatric Leukemia/Lymphoma Study Group from 1996 to 2011 were analyzed, and of these, 238 cases were evaluated in this study. RESULTS Leukostasis was diagnosed in 23 patients (9.7%). The median leukocyte count and spleen size below the left costal margin in cases with leukostasis were significantly higher and larger when compared to those in cases without leukostasis (458.5 × 10(9) /l vs. 151.8 × 10(9) /l (P < 0.01), and 13 vs. 5 cm (P < 0.01), respectively). Leukostasis occurred with ocular symptoms in 14 cases, priapism in four cases, and dyspnea, syncope, headache, knee pain, difficulty hearing, and aseptic necrosis of the femoral head in one case each. One case had two leukostasis symptoms simultaneously. Three cases were diagnosed before imatinib became available. Five cases received special treatment, and in the remaining 15 cases, all of these symptoms resolved after treatment with imatinib. CONCLUSIONS This retrospective study represents the largest series of children and adolescents in which leukostasis of CML has been reported. Our data provide useful insight into the characteristics of leukostasis in recent cases of children and adolescents with CML.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about outcomes of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in adolescents and young adults (AYA). The purpose of this study is to determine the characteristics and outcomes of AYA AML patients in comparison to older adult patients with AML. PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed all AML patients treated at our institution from 1965 to 2009 who were aged 16 to 29 years. RESULTS Among 3922 adult AML patients treated during this period, 432 (11%) were identified as AYA. Median age was 23 years (range, 16-29 years); 73 (17%) patients had core binding factor (CBF)-AML [inversion (16), translocation (8:21)], and 51 (12%) had acute promyelocytic leukemia. Complete remission (CR) rates were 93% for CBF AML, 78% for APL, 77% with diploid karyotype, and 68% for other AML. Univariate analysis demonstrated higher rates of CR, CR duration, and overall survival (OS) in the AYA group compared with older patients. On multivariate analysis, AYA age group was independently associated with improved CR rate and CR duration, with a trend for longer OS (P = .085). CONCLUSION Outcome of AYA AML patients is overall better than for older adults with AML. Despite improvements in treatments and outcomes over time, there is still need for improvement in AYA with AML particularly for those with AML other than CBF and APL.

Abstract
Chronic granulocytic leukemia (CGL) is a rare hematologic disease in pediatric patients. It usually presents with insidious symptoms. However, some cases may have an atypical presentation. We report herein the case of a 13-year-old female admitted to the emergency department with acute abdomen. She had hyperleukocytosis of 500.0 × 1000 cells/mm suggestive of CGL. A paracentesis was performed due to abdominal compartment syndrome that demonstrated hemoperitoneum. At laparotomy, a ruptured ovarian mass was found with multiple tumor implants in the serosal surface. Pathology revealed a CGL-infiltrated ovary. The patient is currently stable, has finished adjuvant chemotherapy, and is at 24 months of follow-up. To our knowledge, this is the first report of such a case.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies comparing survival of adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients to that of younger patients with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) have yielded conflicting results. In order to more accurately characterize relative survival and other outcomes of AYA patients, a cross-study analysis was conducted using data from recent trials conducted by the Children's Cancer Group (CCG) and Children's Oncology Group (COG). METHODS Data were combined from the CCG-2891, CCG-2941, CCG-2961, and AAML03P1 trials. The data set included 1840 patients, comprising 238 AYA and 1602 younger patients. RESULTS Overall survival was not significantly different in the 2 groups (AYA, 49% ± 7% versus younger, 54% ± 3% (± 2 standard errors), P = .058). Relapse was lower in AYA patients (30% ± 7% versus 41% ± 3%, P = .002), but treatment-related mortality (TRM) was higher (25% ± 6% versus 12% ± 2%, P < .001). After adjustment for other factors, older age remained strongly associated with TRM (hazard ratio = 2.30, 95% CI = 1.59-3.33, P < .001). Infection accounted for the excess TRM in AYA patients. CONCLUSIONS Survival in AYA and younger patients with newly diagnosed AML is similar; however, older patients are at higher risk for TRM. More effective strategies for preventing mortality from infection in AYA patients are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Older age has historically been an adverse prognostic factor in pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML). To the authors' knowledge, the impact of age relative to that of other prognostic factors on the outcome of patients treated in recent trials is unknown. METHODS Clinical outcome and causes of treatment failure of 351 patients enrolled on 3 consecutive protocols for childhood AML between 1991 and 2008 were analyzed according to age and protocol. RESULTS The more recent protocol (AML02) produced improved outcomes for patients aged 10 years to 21 years compared with 2 earlier studies (AML91 and AML97), with 3-year rates of event-free survival (EFS), overall survival (OS), and cumulative incidence of refractory leukemia or recurrence (CIR) for this group being similar to those of patients aged birth to 9 years: EFS: 58.3% ± 5.4% versus 66.6% ± 4.9% (P = .20); OS: 68.9% ± 5.1% versus 75.1% ± 4.5% (P = .36); and CIR: 21.9% ± 4.4% versus 25.3% ± 4.2% (P = .59). The EFS and OS estimates for patients aged 10 to 15 years overlapped those for patients aged 16 to 21 years. However, the cumulative incidence of toxic death was significantly higher for patients aged 10 to 21 years compared with younger patients (13.2% ± 3.6% vs 4.5% ± 2.0%; P = .028). CONCLUSIONS The survival rate for older children with AML has improved on the results of a recent trial and is now similar to that of younger patients. However, deaths from toxicity remain a significant problem for patients in the older age group. Future trials should focus on improving supportive care while striving to develop more effective antileukemic therapy.

Abstract
Applications of flow cytometry in pediatric cancers have expanded substantially in recent years. In acute leukemias, the commonest childhood cancer, flow cytometry can now define complex antigenic profiles that are associated with specific cytogenetic/molecular defects and can also directly identify BCR-ABL fusion protein. Flow cytometry based scoring system has been described for diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndromes. In solid tumors, flow cytometry was previously used mainly to determine DNA content for prognosis; however, recent studies in children with neuroblastoma and Ewing sarcoma have identified its diagnostic utility. In this review, we will discuss the current and future applications of flow cytometry in pediatric hematology-oncology.

Abstract
With the improved survivals offered by the tyrosine kinase inhibitors has come the necessity to address issues relating to quality of life and one such area is that of fertility and parenting. Animal data suggest that imatinib at standard dosages is unlikely to impair fertility in either adult males or females but human data remain limited. Children born to men who are actively taking imatinib at the time of conception appear healthy and current advice is not to discontinue treatment. In contrast the data relating to children born to women exposed to imatinib during pregnancy are less encouraging. Although numbers are small there has been a disturbing cluster of rare congenital malformations such that imatinib cannot be safely recommended, particularly during the period of organogenesis. The appropriate management of children with CML has also been radically changed by the advent of imatinib. The features of the disease at presentation, the natural history and the response to therapy seem to be identical in children to that seen in adults. Now that imatinib has been in clinical use for almost ten years without severe long-term side effects, most physicians are now comfortable advising a trial of imatinib prior to consideration of transplant. Data relating to the efficacy and safety of second generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors in childhood is entirely absent and transplant remains the first choice for patients failing imatinib and perhaps also for young patients with sub-optimal responses.

Abstract
Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is rare in the pediatric population. Allogeneic stem cell transplant remains the only curative therapy; however, identifying a fully matched donor is not always possible. Imatinib mesylate has been shown to induce hematologic and cytogenetic response in adults and children with CML. We describe a child who achieved molecular remission with imatinib mesylate. BCR-ABL negative peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) were successfully collected after mobilization with filgrastim.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to define the frequency and types of acquired chromosomal aberrations in a group of Taiwanese children with ALL. The sample population consisted of 78 patients under 18 years of age with newly diagnosed ALL who underwent cytogenetic studies at diagnosis and had adequate metaphase chromosomes for analysis at the authors' hospital from 1993 to 2001. Metaphase chromosomes were banded using the conventional trypsin-Giemsa banding technique. Analysis of ploidy revealed 16 (20.5%) patients with normal diploidy, 28 (35.9%) with pseudodiploidy, 6 (7.7%) with hyperdiploidy (47-50), 19 (24.4%) with hyperdiploidy (> 50), and 9 (9.4%) hypodiploidy. Near-haploidy was not observed. Of the patients with abnormal karyotypes, recurrent structural abnormalities were determined in 31 (50%) cases, with the most frequent t(9;22). In conclusion, the frequency and type of acquired chromosomal aberrations found in these Taiwanese children with ALL are similar to those reported in the literature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prognostic significance of age among pediatric patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) was investigated. METHODS The authors reviewed the outcome of 424 patients who were <or=21 years of age at the time of diagnosis of AML (excluding acute promyelocytic leukemia) between 1983 and 2002 at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (n=288) or the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center (n=136). Two treatment eras (1983-1989 and 1990-2002) were examined because of the greater intensity of treatment during the recent era. RESULTS After controlling for the effects of cytogenetics, white blood cell (WBC) count, French-American-British (FAB) subtype, and treatment era, they observed that age and treatment era interacted significantly in relation to event-free survival (EFS) (P=.033). Patients 10 years of age or older were at greater risk of an adverse event than younger patients in the recent era (hazard ratio=1.8; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.3-2.6; P=.005) but not in the early era. The rate of adverse events (death or recurrence) increased significantly with each year of age in the recent era (4.3%/year; 95% CI: 1.9-6.8%; P=.001) but not in the early era. The rate of death increased significantly with each year of age in both eras (4.4%/year; 95% CI: 2.3-6.5%; P<.001). EFS and survival showed no association with study site, and the effects of age were similar at the 2 sites. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that age is an independent prognostic factor in childhood AML and that children younger than 10 years benefit more than older children from newer intensive therapies.

Abstract
A 2-year-old domestic shorthair cat was presented to us with decreased activity and anorexia. Hematologic findings revealed a mild non-regenerative anemia, thrombocytopenia, and leukocytosis with an increase in blast cells. Bone marrow aspirates also revealed a marked increase of blasts. The blastic cells were shown to be positive for peroxidase. Acute myeloblastic leukemia without maturation (M1) was diagnosed according to the FAB classification. Chemotherapy was initiated with cyclophosphamide, vincristine, prednisolone, and cytosine arabinoside. The cat responded partially. In total, the cats were given 7 blood transfusions. The cat died 14 weeks after first being presented to us.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have reported a more favorable outcome for teenagers and young adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) when they were treated in pediatric oncology departments compared with adult hematology departments. However, biased risk grouping and high treatment-related mortality have hampered some of those comparisons. METHODS In Sweden during the 1990s, adolescents with ALL were treated in a pediatric oncology unit or in an adult hematologic unit, depending on the initial referral. In the current national, comparative, retrospective study, patients with ALL aged 10 years to 40 years who were treated either according to the Nordic Society of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (NOPHO) ALL protocol (1992-2000) (NOPHO-92 protocol) or according to the Swedish Adult ALL Group protocol (1994-2000) (Adult protocol) were included. None of the protocols had age as a high-risk criterion. RESULTS In total, 243 patients with B-precursor and T-cell ALL were treated according to the protocols. There was a significant difference in the remission rate between the NOPHO-92 protocol (99%; n = 144 patients) and the Adult protocol (90%; n = 99 patients; P < .01), and the event-free survival (EFS) was also superior for the NOPHO-92 protocol compared with the Adult protocol (P < .01). However, EFS was higher for patients aged 15 years to 25 years compared with patients aged 26 years to 40 years within the Adult protocol group (P = .01). The treatment protocol itself was identified as an independent risk factor. CONCLUSIONS The NOPHO-92 protocol resulted in a better outcome than the Adult protocol; therefore, adolescents may benefit from the pediatric protocol treatment strategy. Prospective trials are warranted to determine whether young adults would benefit from similar treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical and biological characteristics at diagnosis in children and adolescents with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) in contemporary practice. METHODS Analysis was conducted on data from 3 prospective trials conducted in children and adolescents with CML. Forty pediatric patients were evaluated in 16 French pediatric oncology units between 1991 and 2003. RESULTS The disease predominately affected children who were older than 10 years (67% of the patients), with a higher prevalence in boys than girls (gender ratio: 1.5). Approximately 20% of cases were diagnosed incidentally. The main presenting symptoms were asthenia, weight loss, and complaints related to splenomegaly. Occasional patients presented with signs evocative of leukostasis. Symptoms were more common in patients with splenic enlargement, which was present in 70% of patients, and higher leukocyte counts. Markedly raised leukocyte counts were common (median white blood cell count: 242 x 10(9)/L). The age and the gender of the patients had no effect on the leukocyte count, the hemoglobin level, or the platelet count. A predominance of b3a2 transcript was observed in the 16 children who were studied for the type of chimeric BCR-ABL mRNA. CONCLUSIONS This is largest reported series of CML at diagnosis in children and adolescents. It shows that the characteristics of CML seem to differ in children compared with previously published adult series; in particular, the presenting leukocyte counts are often higher in children.

Abstract
To determine the results of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) at various stages of the disease in children, a retrospective analysis was carried out on the outcome of transplants performed on 76 children and teenagers with CML between 1982 and 1998. In all, 60 patients were transplanted from a matched sibling donor (MSD) and 16 from a matched unrelated donor (MUD). There was a higher incidence of acute graft-versus-host disease after MUD transplantation (P<10(-3)). The main cause of death was transplant-related toxicity in both groups. In MSD recipients, the probability of relapse at 5 years for patients transplanted in the first chronic phase was lower than in patients transplanted in the advanced phase (relative risk (rr)=5.90; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.85-18.82, P<0.01). The estimated 5-year event-free survival (EFS) rate was higher after MSD vs MUD transplantation (61% (95% CI, 48-73%) vs 27% (95% CI, 4-49%), rr=0.25, P<10(-3)). In children transplanted from MSD, the 5-year EFS was higher when transplantation was performed in the first chronic phase vs the advanced phases (73% (95% CI, 59-87%) vs 32% (95% CI, 10-54%), P<10(-3)). Disease status at transplantation was the unique factor influencing survival in patients undergoing transplantation from MSD with a better outcome for those transplanted in the first chronic phase. Allogeneic HSC offers a possibility of curing childhood CML with a significant advantage for patients transplanted in chronic phase using a human leukocyte antigen-identical sibling donor.

Abstract
Differences in age and sex distribution as well as FAB (French-American-British classification) types have been reported for acute leukemias in several countries. We studied the demographics and response to treatment of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) between 1989 and 2000 in Teresina, Piau , and compared these results with reports from Brazil and other countries. Complete data concerning 345 patients (230 ALL, 115 AML) were reviewed. AML occurred predominantly in adults (77%), with a median age of 34 years, similar to that found in the southeast of Brazil but lower than the median age in the United States and Europe (52 years). FAB distribution was similar in children and adults and FAB-M2 was the most common type, as also found in Japan. The high frequency of FAB-M3 described in most Brazilian studies and for Hispanics in the United States was not observed. Overall survival for adults was 40%, similar to other studies in Brazil. A high mortality rate was observed during induction. No clinical or hematological parameter influenced survival in the Cox model. ALL presented the characteristic peak of incidence between 2-8 years. Most of the cases were CD10+ pre-B ALL. In 25%, abnormal expression of myeloid antigens was observed. Only 10% of the patients were older than 30 years. Overall survival was better for children. Age and leukocyte count were independent prognostic factors. These data demonstrate that, although there are regional peculiarities, the application of standardized treatments and good supportive care make it possible to achieve results observed in other countries for the same chemotherapy protocols.
