Tailoring terahertz plasmons with silver nanorod arrays

Quadruple plasmon-induced transparency of polarization desensitization caused by the Boltzmann function

This study proposes a graphene metamaterial desensitized to the polarized angle to produce tunable quadruple plasmon-induced transparency (PIT). As a tool employed to explain the PIT, n-order coupled mode theory (CMT) is deduced for the first time and closely agrees with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations according to the quadruple PIT results in the case of n = 5. Additionally, the response of the proposed structure to the angle of polarized light is investigated. As a result, the Boltzmann function satisfied by the response of graphene strips to the polarization direction of incident light is proposed for the first time. Its property of polarization desensitization can be attributed to structural centrosymmetry, and conjugated variety which the Boltzmann functions result in. Therefore, a quintuple-mode modulation based on simultaneous electro-optical switch is realized by tuning Fermi levels within graphene. Its modulation degrees of amplitude and dephasing times are obtained. Given that the slow-light property is an important application of PIT, the n-order group index is thereby obtained. Hence, not only do the insights gained into polarization-desensitization structure provide new ideas for the design of novel optoelectronic devices, but also the results from the n-order CMT offer new research progress and references in theory.

Strong polarization-dependent terahertz modulation of aligned Ag nanowires on Si substrate

Optically tunable, strong polarization-dependent transmission of terahertz pulses through aligned Ag nanowires on a Si substrate is demonstrated. Terahertz pulses primarily pass through the Ag nanowires and the transmittance is weakly dependent on the angle between the direction of polarization of the terahertz pulse and the direction of nanowire alignment. However, the transmission of a terahertz pulse through optically excited materials strongly depends on the polarization direction. The extinction ratio increases as the power of the pumping laser increases. The enhanced polarization dependency is explained by the redistribution of photocarriers, which accelerates the sintering effect along the direction of alignment of the Ag nanowires. The photocarrier redistribution effect is examined by the enhancement of terahertz emission from the sample. Oblique metal nanowires on Si could be utilized for designing optically tunable terahertz polarization modulators.

Characteristics of surface plasmon-polariton waves excited on 2D periodically patterned columnar thin films of silver

Periodically patterned thin films of slanted silver nanocolumns were deposited by directing a collimated vapor flux of silver toward square and hexagonal gratings of photoresist on glass substrates. Angle-resolved specular-transmittance measurements in the visible and near-infrared wavelength bands on these periodically patterned columnar thin films (CTFs) were carried out to investigate the excitation of surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves bound tightly to either the air/CTF or the photoresist/CTF interfaces. The orientation of the propagation vector of the incident p-polarized plane wave with respect to the morphologically significant plane of the CTFs was varied to reveal asymmetric (unidirectional) coupling of Floquet modes to SPP waves. The asymmetric coupling is maximal when the propagation vector of the incident plane wave lies wholly in the morphologically significant plane. Theoretical understanding based on the Bruggeman formalism to homogenize the silver CTFs into hyperbolic biaxial continua is able to explain the experimental observations very well.

Soft and broadband infrared metamaterial absorber based on gold nanorod/liquid crystal hybrid with tunable total absorption

We design a soft infrared metamaterial absorber based on gold nanorods dispersed in liquid crystal (LC) placed on a gold film and theoretically investigate its total absorption character. Because the nanorods align with the LC molecule, the gold nanorods/LC hybrid exhibits different permittivity as a function of tilt angle of LC. At a certain tilt angle, the absorber shows an omnidirectional total absorption effect. By changing the tilt angle of LC by an external electric field, the total absorption character can be adjusted. The total absorption character also depends on the concentration, geometric dimension of nanorods, and defect of nanorod arrangement in LC. When the LC contains different size of gold nanorods, a broadband absorption can be easily realized. The characteristics including flexibility, omnidirectional, broadband and tunability make the infrared metamaterial absorber possess potential use in smart metamaterial devices.

Reconfiguring gratings of slanted plasmonic nanocolumns by ion beam irradiation

Gratings with slanted plasmonic nanocolumns of silver (Ag) on top fabricated by physical vapor deposition at large oblique angles on predefined gratings show unique plasmonic properties. These aligned nanocolumns with high-aspect ratios can be uniformly re-oriented to any desired angle of slant by ion beam irradiation. A focused ion beam (FIB) has been used as the ion source here. The plastic deformation of the nanocolumns arises due to defect formation caused by the energetic ions and can enable the complete tuning of the photonic and plasmonic properties of the grating through the slant angle. The reorientation can be uniformly carried over large areas of 0.2 mm(2) with the FIB and the diffraction patterns from the reoriented grating show large changes in the diffraction efficiencies. Electromagnetic simulations of the grating structures reveal large changes in the photonic properties with the slant angle such as diffraction efficiencies and the electromagnetic near fields.
