Abstract
Background Neonatal jaundice (NNJ) is one of the most common neonatal illnesses around the world. It continues to be a leading cause of avoidable brain damage, physical and mental impairment, and death in neonates. Neonatal morbidity due to NNJ has a significant impact and cost on families and healthcare resources. The majority of instances are addressed without intervention, but others require assessment and assistance in the form of follow-up or treatment. Inadequate family awareness and understanding of this frequent newborn condition can contribute to delays and difficulties. Aim This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitudes of parents regarding NNJ in Bisha City, Saudi Arabia. Methodology A cross-sectional study involving 242 participants was carried out. Data were collected using an online questionnaire. The knowledge score differences between groups were analyzed using a Wilcoxon rank sum test and the Kruskal-Wallis rank test. Results In this study of 242 participants from Bisha, we found that the majority were female (155, 64.0%), employed (129, 53.3%), and held a postgraduate degree (150, 62.0%). Regarding knowledge of NNJ, 109 (45.0%) have correctly defined it as yellow pigmentation in the sclera and 64 (26.4%) as yellow pigmentation of the skin. Of most participants, 132 (54.5%) recognized that NNJ could cause complications, but 53 (40.2%) of these were unaware of what these complications might be. Notably, only 89 (36.8%) of respondents believed they had sufficient knowledge about NNJ. The median knowledge score was 3.0 (IQR, 1.0-4.0), and higher scores were significantly associated with being female and reporting sufficient knowledge about the disease. Strategies suggested for improving awareness included campaigns (98, 40.5%) and social networking programs (81, 33.5%). The data suggest a need for enhanced public education regarding NNJ. Conclusion The study highlights the need for increased awareness and education among parents in Bisha, Saudi Arabia, about NNJ. The findings suggest that campaigns and social networking programs could effectively educate people about the condition. Additionally, the study provides insights into the factors associated with higher knowledge scores, such as gender and having a child with NNJ. The results of this study may help healthcare professionals develop effective educational programs and interventions to improve parents' knowledge and attitudes toward NNJ.

Abstract
Introduction neonatal jaundice appears in most neonates as "physiological jaundice" in the first few weeks of life; however, pathological jaundice is associated with an increased risk of long-term complications and mortality only a few studies have been conducted on the determinants of neonatal jaundice in Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to identify the determinants of neonatal jaundice (pathological) among neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care units in Sidama Region general and referral public hospitals. Methods a hospital-based unmatched case-control study was conducted among 270 neonates in public hospitals of Sidama Region from June 23 to August 8, 2022. We used a pre-tested interviewer-administered questionnaire and collected by open data kit (ODK) then the data was downloaded and exported to Microsoft Excel worksheets (XLS) and imported to SPSS version 26 for further analysis. Bi-variable logistic regression analysis was performed. Variables with a P-Value of less than 0.25 were included in multivariable logistic regression. Multi-variable logistic regression was performed and Adjusted Odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval was computed and statistical significance was declared at a p-value <0.05. Results a total of 270 neonates with mothers (90 cases and 180 controls) with a response rate of 100% were included in this study. Factors significantly increased the odds of developing neonatal jaundice were multiparty (AOR=2.869(95%CI 1.426-5.769)), prolonged duration of labor (AOR=4.618(95%CI 1.689 - 12.625)). ABO incompatibility (AOR=3.362(95%CI, 1.185 - 9.537)). Preterm (AOR=2.936(95%CI, 1.2456.923)), birthasphyxia (AOR=2.278(95%CI,1.1454.531)) and polycythemia (AOR=3.397(95%CI, 1.147-10.061)). Conclusion in this study multiparty, prolonged duration labor, ABO incompatibility, preterm gestational age, birth asphyxia, and polycythemia were factors that significantly increased the odds of developing neonatal jaundice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND ABO incompatibility is a major risk factor for neonatal indirect hyperbilirubinemia (NIH), requiring treatment. It has been shown that there are racial differences in direct antiglobulin test (DAT) positivity and phototherapy need in the O--B versus (vs) O--A incompatibility. The comparison between the O--B and O--A incompatibility is not well studied in Saudi Arabia. AIMS We aimed to compare DAT positivity and phototherapy need in O-B vs O-A incompatibility in Saudi Arabia. METHODS This retrospective cohort study was conducted in one Saudi hospital. We included a convenience sample of neonates born between 01 January 2013 and 31 December 2021. We included healthy neonates admitted to the nursery care unit only, born at≥38 weeks gestation, and had normal G6PD levels. Neonates that had no G6PD level measurement or lost follow-up post-discharge were excluded. The data span was the first 14 days of life. RESULTS A total of 611 neonates met our inclusion criteria. Positive DAT was more prevalent in the O-B than the O-A incompatibility [43.5% vs 29.2%, p < 0.001). A greater odd of phototherapy need was observed in the O--B vs O-A incompatibility across various strata. Readmission for NIH, use of 360° exposure phototherapy, or intravenous immunoglobulin administration was more prevalent in the O-B than the O-A incompatibility (13.2% vs 5.0%, p < 0.001). A logistic regression analysis revealed that the O-B incompatibility modified the association between DAT positivity and phototherapy need. CONCLUSIONS The O-B incompatibility had a mediator effect on the relationship between DAT positivity and the need for phototherapy in the study population, which emphasizes that the O-B and O-A are not the same from the NIH point of view.

Abstract
Background Jaundice is a common clinical problem during the first month of birth throughout the world. Mainly, it is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Objectives The aimed of this studied was to assess predictors of jaundice among neonates admitted to selected referral hospitals in southwest Oromia, Ethiopia, 2021. Methods An Institutional based cross-sectional study was implemented among 205 admitted neonates at selected referral hospitals in southwest Oromia, Ethiopia from October 05 to November 5, 2021. Jimma medical center (JMC), Wollega University referral hospital (WURH), and Ambo University Referral hospital (AURH) were selected by simple random sampling technique. A pretested structured interviewer-administered questionnaire and medical record review was used to collect data. Both binary and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with neonatal jaundice. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with neonatal jaundice. Statistical Significance was declared at P-value less than 0.05 in the final model, and if the confidence interval does not include the null hypothesis value. Results The prevalence of neonatal jaundice was 20.5% (95%CI: 1.74-1.85). The mean age of neonates was 8.6 ± 7.8 days. Traditional medicine use during current pregnancy (AOR: 5.62, 95%CI: 1.07, 9.52), Rh incompatibility (AOR: 0.045, 95%CI: 0.01, 0.21), gestational age (AOR: 4.61, 95%CI: 1.05, 10.3), premature rupture of membrane (AOR: 3.76, 95%CI: 1.58, 8.93) and hypertension (mother) (AOR: 3.99, 95%CI: 1.13, 14.02) were factors significantly associated with neonatal jaundice. Conclusion Neonatal jaundice was relatively higher in the current study. Traditional medicine use, Rh incompatibility, premature ruptures of membrane, hypertension, and preterm gestational age were factors associated with neonatal jaundice.

Abstract
The study was aimed to evaluate the performance of a newly developed spectroscopy-based non-invasive and noncontact device (SAMIRA) for the simultaneous measurement of hemoglobin, bilirubin and oxygen saturation as an alternative to the invasive biochemical method of blood sampling. The accuracy of the device was assessed in 4318 neonates having incidences of either anemia, jaundice, or hypoxia. Transcutaneous bilirubin, hemoglobin and blood saturation values were obtained by the newly developed instrument which was corroborated with the biochemical blood tests by expert clinicians. The instrument is trained using Artificial Neural Network Analysis to increase the acceptability of the data. The artificial intelligence incorporated within the instrument determines the disease condition of the neonate. The Pearson's correlation coefficient, r was found to be 0.987 for hemoglobin estimation and 0.988 for bilirubin and blood gas saturation respectively. The bias and the limits of agreement for the measurement of all the three parameters were within the clinically acceptance limit.

Neonatal and Maternal Risk Factors for Indirect Hyperbilirubinemia: A Cross-Sectional Study from Bahrain. Int J Pediatr 2022; 2022:5199423. Abstract
Results Out of 555 records, 404 neonates were included. Among those, 209 (51%) were males and 275 (68.1%) were Bahraini. The median indirect bilirubin level at presentation was 218 (interquartile range, 174-270) μmol/L. ABO incompatibility was the commonest risk factor for neonatal indirect hyperbilirubinemia (n = 152, 37.6%) followed by glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency (n = 130/400, 32.5%). Age (>25 years) was the commonest maternal risk factor (n = 331, 81.9%) followed by cesarean delivery (n = 137, 33.9%). Neonates with ABO incompatibility had a significantly higher mean indirect bilirubin level compared to those with other risk factors (234.9 ± 68.5 versus 225 ± 82.2 mmol/L, respectively) (P = 0.04). Phototherapy use significantly increased along with the rise of bilirubin level (P < 0.0001). Intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) and exchange transfusion were used in 44 (10.9%) and 14 (3.5%) patients, respectively. Neonates who received IVIG had significantly higher bilirubin levels than those who did not (P = 0.005). Male newborns (P = 0.008), Bahrainis (P = 0.001), those with reticulocytosis (P = 0.001), and those who received IVIG (P = 0.001) were more prone to have associated risk factors. Conclusion ABO incompatibility, G6PD deficiency, and older maternal age were the commonest neonatal and maternal risk factors for developing neonatal indirect hyperbilirubinemia. Bahraini, male newborns, reticulocytosis, and IVIG use were associated with these factors. Early detection of such factors through screening can aid in immediate management to prevent serious complications of this common condition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An economical alternative method of increasing the light intensity of phototherapy for neonatal jaundice is the use of reflective sheets placed on the sides of the incubator. AIM To determine whether reflective sheets in addition to phototherapy increase the reduction of bilirubin levels and the duration of hospital stay. METHODS The study was undertaken in the neonatal intensive care unit of Cairo University Children's Hospital. There were two groups: a study group of 90 full-term neonates with neonatal jaundice who received single phototherapy in incubators covered with white plastic reflective sheets and a control group of 90 full-term neonates with neonatal jaundice who received single phototherapy without the reflective sheets. RESULTS The mean (SD) rate of bilirubin decline in the first 24 hours of phototherapy was greater in the study group [3.7 (0.86) µmol/L/hr] than in the control group [2.2 (0.14) µmol/L/hr] (p<0.001). CONCLUSION Use of reflective sheets decreases the total duration of phototherapy and the cost and duration of hospitalisation without any added complications.Abbreviations: AAP: American Academy of Pediatrics; HIDS: high-intensity double-surface; LMIC: low- and middle-income countries; MCTP: mirror-covered tunnel phototherapy; NICU: neonatal intensive care unit; TSB: total serum bilirubin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This systematic review and meta-analysis study aimed to estimate the overall prevalence of Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in neonates with jaundice who were admitted to hospitals in Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched PubMed/Medline, Scopus, ISI Web of Sciences, and Iranian Local databases up to December 2019.We calculated Prevalence and 95% Confidence Interval (95% CI) of G6PD deficiency as summary measures. We conducted subgroup analysis based on the sex and quality of studies, while meta-regression were applied for investigating the effect of years of studies and years of publication on the pooled prevalence. We applied sensitivity analysis to investigate the effect of excluding each study on the pooled prevalence estimation. RESULTS The total sample size was 9799 people. The pooled prevalence of G6PD deficiency among neonates with jaundice in Iran was 7.0% (95% CI: 5.5-8.5%). The results of subgroup analysis showed that, pooled prevalence of G6PD deficiency among male neonate (12.1%, 95%CI: 7.6-16.7%) was more prevalent that female (3.00%, 95%CI: 1.1-4.9%). Based on the sensitivity analysis, lower and higher pooled prevalence of G6PD deficiency was observed 5.8% (95%CI: 4.7-6.9%) and 7.3% (95%CI: 5.7-8.8%) respectively by excluding each study. CONCLUSION The overall prevalence of G6PD deficiency was 7% in Iranian neonates with Jaundice. Prevalence was high in male and early hours of life. We recommend screening test for G6PD deficiency in neonates to prevent its complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Jaundice is a life-threatening disorder in the neonates. In the present study, we aimed to assess systematically available evidence on causes and management of jaundice in Iranian newborn patients. METHODS We searched the databases of PubMed, Web of Sciences, Scopus and Google Scholar for English articles published since inception until May 2019. A search was also done for Persian articles in Magiran and Scientific Information Database. Studies were evaluated based on predefined criteria by two reviewers. Data analysis was performed by STATA software. RESULTS A total of 33 articles were finally included. The overall pooled prevalence of causes of jaundice among Iranian neonates was as follows: ABO blood groups incompatibility, 16.9% [95% confidence interval (CI) 10.9-22.8]; Rh blood group incompatibility, 4% (95% CI 2.5-5.5); ABO and Rh blood groups incompatibility, 3.6% (95% CI 0-7.7); glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, 6.3% (95% CI 5.1-7.5); infection, 6.6% (95% CI 5.2-8.1); hypothyroidism, 4.2% (95% CI 0.1-8.3); infant of diabetic mother: 2.3% (95% CI 0.1-4.5); unknown, 50.7% (95% CI 33.4-68); cephalohematoma, 0.6% (95% CI 0.3-0.9). Regarding treatment of icterus, seven and eight articles were found on phototherapy and exchange transfusion, respectively. In five studies, all patients underwent phototherapy, but rate of exchange transfusion use was between 6.6% and 50.9%. CONCLUSIONS According to the results, unknown factors were the most common causes of icterus in Iranian neonates, followed by ABO blood groups incompatibility, infections and G6PD deficiency. By the way, phototherapy and exchange transfusion were found as therapeutic choices of neonatal jaundice.

Abstract
Vitamin D metabolite analysis possessed significant clinical value for the pediatric department. However, invasive venipuncture sampling and high blood consumption inflicted much suffering on patients. For alleviation, we carried out a LC-MS method for 25-hydroxyvitamin D quantification in only 3 μl of plasma from the considerably less invasive finger-prick blood samples. To improve sensitivity, acylation on C3-hydroxyl (by isonicotinoyl chloride) rather than Diels-Alder adduction on s-cis-diene structure was for the very first time introduced into vitamin D metabolite derivatization. Compared with the existing derivatization approaches, this novel strategy not only prevented isomer interference, but also exhibited higher reacting throughput. For certification, the methodology was systematically validated and showed satisfying consistency with SRM927a. During clinical application, we found a convincing correlation between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and indirect/total bilirubin in jaundiced newborns. Such an observation indicated that vitamin D supplementation may help to achieve optimal outcomes in neonatal jaundice.

Abstract
Neonatal jaundice is considered one of the most common reasons for admission to the pediatric medical ward. We report a case of a 1-month-old infant who presented with jaundice but no fever or any other signs of systemic illnesses. Laboratory test results revealed high direct hyperbilirubinemia, and urine culture showed a urinary tract infection with Enterobacter cloacae as the causative agent. He was admitted to the pediatric medical ward where he was treated with a course of antibiotics for 14 days, and cholestasis resolved completely following a course of antibiotics. We conclude that direct hyperbilirubinemia can be related to urinary tract infection in neonates. It is unusual for urinary tract infection to present clinically and biochemically as cholestatic jaundice.

Abstract
Aim: Testing the potential of citrate-capped Mn3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) as a therapeutic agent for alternative rapid treatment of hyperbilirubinemia through direct removal of bilirubin (BR) from blood in mice. Materials & methods: NPs were synthesized and the mechanism of BR degradation in presence and absence of biological macromolecules were characterized in vitro. To test the in vivo BR degradation ability of NPs, CCl4-intoxicated mice were intraperitoneally injected with NPs. Results: We demonstrated ultrahigh efficacy of the NPs in symptomatic treatment of hyperbilirubinemia for rapid reduction of BR in mice compared with conventional medicine silymarin without any toxicological implications. Conclusion: These findings may pave the way for practical clinical use of the NPs as safe medication of hyperbilirubinemia in human subjects.

Abstract
L'ictère néonatal, bien qu'il soit souvent très banal, ne doit pas pour autant être négligé car il peut relever des étiologies variées et avoir des significations différentes au point de devenir pathologique. Au cours d'une étude rétro-prospective descriptive, les auteurs analysent les aspects épidemio-cliniques, thérapeutiques et évolutifs des ictères néonataux pathologiques à l'Unité des Urgences Néonatales de Bonzola à Mbuji-Mayi (RD Congo) sur une période de 5 ans. La fréquence est de 4,9% avec une incidence annuelle de 24 cas/an. La prédominance masculine est notée avec un sexe ratio de 1,1. Ces ictères sont précoces (31,1%) et tardif (17,5%). Les principales causes sont dans 81,6% des cas dominées par les infections (42,5%) et, incompatibilité fœto-maternelle (39,1%). La symptomatologie habituelle est notée: ictère franc et pâleur cutanéo-muqueuse (100%), urines jaunes foncées (62,5%), signes neurologiques (42,5%) et généraux (47,5%). Le traitement était à la fois étiologique (60%) et symptomatique ou d'appoint (40%) et a consisté dans l'association antibiotiques avec transfusion et/ou exsanguino-transfusion (24,2%), antibiothérapie seule (35,8%), inducteurs enzymatiques (35%) et photothérapie (5%). L’évolution a été bonne dans 82,3% des cas contre 9,3% des décès.
