Spatio-temporal coherence mapping of few-cycle vortex pulses

Few-cycle optical vortices for strong-field physics

We report on the generation of optical vortices with few-cycle pulse durations, 500μJ per pulse, at a repetition rate of 1 kHz. To do so, a 25 fs laser beam at 800 nm is shaped with a helical phase and coupled into a hollow-core fiber filled with argon gas, in which it undergoes self-phase modulation. Then, 5.5 fs long pulses are measured at the output of the fiber using a dispersion-scan setup. To retrieve the spectrally resolved spatial profile and orbital angular momentum (OAM) content of the pulse, we introduce a method based on spatially resolved Fourier-transform spectroscopy. We find that the input OAM is transferred to all frequency components of the post-compressed pulse. The combination of these two information shows that we obtain few-cycle, high-intensity vortex beams with a well-defined OAM, and sufficient energy to drive strong-field processes.

Shack-Hartmann Wavefront Sensing of Ultrashort Optical Vortices

Light beams carrying Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM), also known as optical vortices (OV), have led to fascinating new developments in fields ranging from quantum communication to novel light-matter interaction aspects. Even though several techniques have emerged to synthesize these structured-beams, their detection, in particular, single-shot amplitude, wavefront, and modal content characterization, remains a challenging task. Here, we report the single-shot amplitude, wavefront, and modal content characterization of ultrashort OV using a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor. These vortex beams are obtained using spiral phase plates (SPPs) that are frequently used for high-intensity applications. The reconstructed wavefronts display a helical structure compatible with the topological charge induced by the SPPs. We affirm the accuracy of the optical field reconstruction by the wavefront sensor through an excellent agreement between the numerically backpropagated and experimentally obtained intensity distribution at the waist. Consequently, through Laguerre-Gauss (LG) decomposition of the reconstructed fields, we reveal the radial and azimuthal mode composition of vortex beams under different conditions. The potential of our method is further illustrated by characterizing asymmetric Gaussian vortices carrying fractional average OAM, and a realtime topological charge measurement at a 10Hz repetition rate. These results can promote Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensing as a single-shot OV characterization tool.

Topological liquid crystal superstructures as structured light lasers

Liquid crystals (LCs) form an extremely rich range of self-assembled topological structures with artificially or naturally created topological defects. Some of the main applications of LCs are various optical and photonic devices, where compared to their solid-state counterparts, soft photonic systems are fundamentally different in terms of unique properties such as self-assembly, self-healing, large tunability, sensitivity to external stimuli, and biocompatibility. Here we show that complex tunable microlasers emitting structured light can be generated from self-assembled topological LC superstructures containing topological defects inserted into a thin Fabry-Pérot microcavity. The topology and geometry of the LC superstructure determine the structuring of the emitted light by providing complex three-dimensionally varying optical axis and order parameter singularities, also affecting the topology of the light polarization. The microlaser can be switched between modes by an electric field, and its wavelength can be tuned with temperature. The proposed soft matter microlaser approach opens directions in soft matter photonics research, where structured light with specifically tailored intensity and polarization fields could be designed and implemented.

Spatiotemporal evolutions of ultrashort vortex pulses generated by spiral multi-pinhole plate

We use the spiral multi-pinhole plate to generate ultrashort vortex pulses and study their spatiotemporal evolutions involving intensity, phase, orbital angular momentum, and energy current. In the experiment, a Mach-Zehnder-type interferometer is employed to perform the investigation of ultrashort vortices. Combining the experimental results and the theoretical analyses, we discuss the spatiotemporal evolutions of ultrashort vortex pulses in femtosecond regime. The results show that the distribution of orbital angular momentum in the cross-section of the vortex pulse is maintained almost invariable in the pulse duration, while both the intensity and the energy current obey a Gaussian-like distribution. With time evolution, the phase contour lines of such vortex pulses rotate around the propagation axis.

Spectral anomalies and Gouy rotation around the singularity of ultrashort vortex pulses

Spectral anomalies of femtosecond pulses with orbital angular momentum were studied in the vicinity of singularities. Bessel-Gauss (BG) beams were generated with mode-locked Ti:sapphire oscillators and dispersion-compensated diffractive axicons acting as spiral phase plates (SPPs). High-resolution two-dimensional spectral mapping was performed with a scanning fiber probe. Progressive rotation of the most pronounced features, known as "spectral eyes", in the maps of spectral moments was found at increasing propagation distance. The phenomenon is explained by a wavelength-dependent Gouy phase shift of interfering spectral components in the twisted wavefront. Spatial "spectral switching" was detected for few-cycle pulses. Possible improvements of selectivity are proposed.

Comparison between broadband Bessel beam launchers based on either Bessel or Hankel aperture distribution for millimeter wave short pulse generation

In this paper, a comparison is presented between Bessel beam launchers at millimeter waves based on either a cylindrical standing wave (CSW) or a cylindrical inward traveling wave (CITW) aperture distribution. It is theoretically shown that CITW launchers are better suited for the generation of electromagnetic short pulses because they maintain their performances over a larger bandwidth than those realizing a CSW aperture distribution. Moreover, the wavenumber dispersion of both the launchers is evaluated both theoretically and numerically. To this end, two planar Bessel beam launchers, one enforcing a CSW and the other enforcing a CITW aperture distribution, are designed at millimeter waves with a center operating frequency of f¯=60GHz and analyzed in the bandwidth 50 - 70 GHz by using an in-house developed numerical code to solve Maxwell's equations based on the method of moments. It is shown that a monochromatic Bessel beam can be efficiently generated by both the launchers over a wide fractional bandwidth. Finally, we investigate the generation of limited-diffractive electromagnetic pulses at millimeter waves, up to a certain non-diffractive range. Namely, it is shown that by feeding the launcher with a Gaussian short pulse, a spatially confined electromagnetic pulse can be efficiently generated in front of the launcher.

Nondiffracting self-imaging of ultrashort wavepackets

Self-imaging of ultrashort-pulsed nondiffracting needle beams, i.e., fringe-free Bessel beams, is analyzed. In contrast to the classical diffractive Talbot effect, pulse revivals with minimum spectral and temporal distortion are obtained. Robustness is further enhanced by self-reconstruction. The high-fidelity pulse transfer enables spatial and temporal multiplexing in free space without the need for a nonlinear medium, even at pulse durations down to the few-cycle range.

Spatio-temporal light springs: extended encoding of orbital angular momentum in ultrashort pulses

We introduce a new class of spatio-temporally coupled ultrashort laser beams, which are obtained by superimposing Laguerre-Gauss beams whose azimuthal mode index is correlated to their frequency. These beams are characterized by helical structures for their phase and intensity profiles, which both encode the orbital angular momentum carried by the light. They can easily be engineered in the optical range, and are naturally produced at shorter wavelengths when attosecond pulses are generated by intense femtosecond Laguerre-Gauss laser beams. These spatio-temporal "light springs" will allow for the transfer of the orbital angular momentum to matter by stimulated Raman scattering.
