Enhanced multiple vibrational resonances by Na+ and K+ dynamics in a neuron model

Effects of chaotic activity and time delay on signal transmission in FitzHugh-Nagumo neuronal system

The influences of chaotic activity and time delay on the transmission of the sub-threshold signal (STS) in a single FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron and coupled neuronal networks are studied. It is found that a moderate chaotic activity level can enhance the system's detection and transmission of STS. This phenomenon is known as chaotic resonance (CR). In a single neuron, the large amplitude and small period of the STS have a positive effect on the CR phenomenon. In the coupled neuronal network, however, the signal transmission performance of chemical synapses is better than that of electrical synapses. The time delay can determine the trend of the system response, and the multiple chaotic resonances phenomenon is observed upon fine-tuning the time delay length. Both sub-harmonic chaotic resonance and chaotic anti-resonance appear when the STS period and time delay are locked. In chained networks, the signal transmission performance between electrical synapses attenuates continuously. Conversely, the performance between chemical synapses reaches a steady state.

Vibrational resonance in a neuron-astrocyte coupled model

Recent findings have revealed that not only neurons but also astrocytes, a special type of glial cells, are major players of neuronal information processing. It is now widely accepted that they contribute to the regulation of their microenvironment by cross-talking with neurons via gliotransmitters. In this context, we here study the phenomenon of vibrational resonance in neurons by considering their interaction with astrocytes. Our analysis of a neuron-astrocyte pair reveals that intracellular dynamics of astrocytes can induce a double vibrational resonance effect in the weak signal detection performance of a neuron, exhibiting two distinct wells centred at different high-frequency driving amplitudes. We also identify the underlying mechanism of this behaviour, showing that the interaction of widely separated time scales of neurons, astrocytes and driving signals is the key factor for the emergence and control of double vibrational resonance. Vibrational resonances in driven oscillators with position-dependent mass

The vibrational resonance (VR) phenomenon has received a great deal of research attention over the two decades since its introduction. The wide range of theoretical and experimental results obtained has, however, been confined to VR in systems with constant mass. We now extend the VR formalism to encompass systems with position-dependent mass (PDM). We consider a generalized classical counterpart of the quantum mechanical nonlinear oscillator with PDM. By developing a theoretical framework for determining the response amplitude of PDM systems, we examine and analyse their VR phenomenona, obtain conditions for the occurrence of resonances, show that the role played by PDM can be both inductive and contributory, and suggest that PDM effects could usefully be explored to maximize the efficiency of devices being operated in VR modes. Our analysis suggests new directions for the investigation of VR in a general class of PDM systems. Estimating neuronal conductance model parameters using dynamic action potential clamp

BACKGROUND

Parameterization of neuronal membrane conductance models relies on data acquired from current clamp (CC) or voltage clamp (VC) recordings. Although the CC approach provides key information on a neuron's firing properties, it is often difficult to disentangle the influence of multiple conductances that contribute to the excitation properties of a real neuron. Isolation of a single conductance using pharmacological agents or heterologous expression simplifies analysis but requires extensive VC evaluation to explore the complete state behavior of the channel of interest.

NEW METHOD

We present an improved parameterization approach that uses data derived from dynamic action potential clamp (DAPC) recordings to extract conductance equation parameters. We demonstrate the utility of the approach by applying it to the standard Hodgkin-Huxley conductance model although other conductance models could be easily incorporated as well.

RESULTS

Using a fully simulated setup we show that, with as few as five action potentials previously recorded in DAPC mode, sodium conductance equation parameters can be determined with average parameter errors of less than 4% while action potential firing accuracy approaches 100%. In real DAPC experiments, we show that by "training" our model with five or fewer action potentials, subsequent firing lasting for several seconds could be predicted with ˜96% mean firing rate accuracy and 94% temporal overlap accuracy.

COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHODS

Our DAPC-based approach surpasses the accuracy of VC-based approaches for extracting conductance equation parameters with a significantly reduced temporal overhead.

CONCLUSION

DAPC-based approach will facilitate the rapid and systematic characterization of neuronal channelopathies.

Analysis of vibrational resonance in bi-harmonically driven plasma

The phenomenon of vibrational resonance (VR) is examined and analyzed in a bi-harmonically driven two-fluid plasma model with nonlinear dissipation. An equation for the slow oscillations of the system is analytically derived in terms of the parameters of the fast signal using the method of direct separation of motion. The presence of a high frequency externally applied electric field is found to significantly modify the system's dynamics, and consequently, induce VR. The origin of the VR in the plasma model has been identified, not only from the effective plasma potential but also from the contributions of the effective nonlinear dissipation. Beside several dynamical changes, including multiple symmetry-breaking bifurcations, attractor escapes, and reversed period-doubling bifurcations, numerical simulations also revealed the occurrence of single and double resonances induced by symmetry breaking bifurcations.

Resonance induced by a spatially periodic force in the reaction-diffusion system

The stimulus-dynamic response is an important topic in physics. In this work, we study the dynamics in the reaction-diffusion system subjected to a weak signal and a spatially periodic force. We find that the response of the system to the weak signal is enhanced largely by the spatially periodic force, which is termed spatially periodic-force-induced resonance. In particular, the response becomes stronger when the spatial frequency is chosen such that the system synchronizes with spatially periodic force. This combinative behavior, i.e., the spatially periodic-force-induced resonance and the spatial-synchronization-enhanced resonance, is of great interest and may shed light on our understanding of the dynamics of nonlinear systems subjected to spatially periodic force in responding to a weak signal.
