An improved tensile deformation model for in-situ dendrite/metallic glass matrix composites

Mesoscopic Constitutive Model for Predicting Failure of Bulk Metallic Glass Composites Based on the Free-Volume Model

A meso-mechanical damage model is developed to predict the tensile damage behaviors of bulk metallic glass composites (BMGCs) toughened by ductile particles. In this model, the deformation behaviors of the BMG matrix and particles are described by the free volume model and Ludwik flow equation, respectively. Weng’s dual-phase method is used to establish the relationship between the constituents and the composite system. The strain-based Weibull probability distribution function and percolation theory are adopted in characterizing the evolution of shear bands leading to the progressive failure of BMGCs. Moreover, the present model is performed under strain-controlled loading. Comparing to experiments on various BMGCs, the predictions are in good agreement with the measured results, which confirms that the present model successfully depicts the composite properties, such as yield strength, uniform deformation and strain softening elongation.

Twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) and work hardening in Ti-based metallic glass matrix composites

The present study demonstrates that Ti-based metallic glass matrix composites (MGMCs) with a normal composition of Ti₄₃Zr₃₂Ni₆Ta₅Be₁₄ containing ductile dendrites dispersed in the glass matrix has been developed, and deformation mechanisms about the tensile property have been investigated by focusing on twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) effect. The Ti-based MGMC has excellent tensile properties and pronounced tensile work-hardening capacity, with a yield strength of 1100 MPa and homogeneous elongation of 4%. The distinguished strain hardening is ascribed to the formation of deformation twinning within the dendrites. Twinning generated in the dendrites works as an obstacle for the rapid propagation of shear bands, and then, the localized necking is avoided, which ensures the ductility of such kinds of composites. Besides, a finite-element model (FEM) has been established to explain the TWIP effect which brings out a work-hardening behavior in the present MGMC instead of a localized strain concentration. According to the plasticity theory of traditional crystal materials and some new alloys, TWIP effect is mainly controlled by stacking fault energy (SFE), which has been analyzed intensively in the present MGMC.

Novel Ti-Ta-Hf-Zr alloys with promising mechanical properties for prospective stent applications

Titanium alloys are receiving increasing research interest for the development of metallic stent materials due to their excellent biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, non-magnetism and radiopacity. In this study, a new series of Ti-Ta-Hf-Zr (TTHZ) alloys including Ti-37Ta-26Hf-13Zr, Ti-40Ta-22Hf-11.7Zr and Ti-45Ta-18.4Hf-10Zr (wt.%) were designed using the d-electron theory combined with electron to atom ratio (e/a) and molybdenum equivalence (Moeq) approaches. The microstructure of the TTHZ alloys were investigated using optical microscopy, XRD, SEM and TEM and the mechanical properties were tested using a Vickers micro-indenter, compression and tensile testing machines. The cytocompatibility of the alloys was assessed using osteoblast-like cells in vitro. The as-cast TTHZ alloys consisted of primarily β and ω nanoparticles and their tensile strength, yield strength, Young's modulus and elastic admissible strain were measured as being between 1000.7-1172.8 MPa, 1000.7-1132.2 MPa, 71.7-79.1 GPa and 1.32-1.58%, respectively. The compressive yield strength of the as-cast alloys ranged from 1137.0 to 1158.0 MPa. The TTHZ alloys exhibited excellent cytocompatibility as indicated by their high cell viability ratios, which were close to that of CP-Ti. The TTHZ alloys can be anticipated to be promising metallic stent materials by virtue of the unique combination of extraordinarily high elastic admissible strain, high mechanical strength and excellent biocompatibility.

Two-phase quasi-equilibrium in β-type Ti-based bulk metallic glass composites

The microstructural evolution of cast Ti/Zr-based bulk metallic glass composites (BMGCs) containing β-Ti still remains ambiguous. This is why to date the strategies and alloys suitable for producing such BMGCs with precisely controllable volume fractions and crystallite sizes are still rather limited. In this work, a Ti-based BMGC containing β-Ti was developed in the Ti-Zr-Cu-Co-Be system. The glassy matrix of this BMGC possesses an exceptional glass-forming ability and as a consequence, the volume fractions as well as the composition of the β-Ti dendrites remain constant over a wide range of cooling rates. This finding can be explained in terms of a two-phase quasi-equilibrium between the supercooled liquid and β-Ti, which the system attains on cooling. The two-phase quasi-equilibrium allows predicting the crystalline and glassy volume fractions by means of the lever rule and we succeeded in reproducing these values by slight variations in the alloy composition at a fixed cooling rate. The two-phase quasi-equilibrium could be of critical importance for understanding and designing the microstructures of BMGCs containing the β-phase. Its implications on the nucleation and growth of the crystalline phase are elaborated.
