Abstract
Background Probiotics are intellectually rewarding for the discovery of their potential as a source of functional food. Investigating the economic and beauty sector dynamics, this study conducted a comprehensive review of scholarly articles to evaluate the capacity of probiotics to promote hair growth and manage dandruff. Methods We used the PRISMA 2020 with Embase, Pubmed, ClinicalTrials.gov, Scopus, and ICTRP databases to investigate studies till May 2023. Meta-analyses utilizing the random effects model were used with odds ratios (OR) and standardized mean differences (SMD). Result Meta-analysis comprised eight randomized clinical trials and preclinical studies. Hair growth analysis found a non-significant improvement in hair count (SMD = 0.32, 95 % CI -0.10 to 0.75) and a significant effect on thickness (SMD = 0.92, 95 % CI 0.47 to 1.36). In preclinical studies, probiotics significantly induced hair follicle count (SMD = 3.24, 95 % CI 0.65 to 5.82) and skin thickness (SMD = 2.32, 95 % CI 0.47 to 4.17). VEGF levels increased significantly (SMD = 2.97, 95 % CI 0.80 to 5.13), while IGF-1 showed a non-significant inducement (SMD = 0.53, 95 % CI -4.40 to 5.45). For dandruff control, two studies demonstrated non-significant improvement in adherent dandruff (OR = 1.31, 95 % CI 0.13-13.65) and a significant increase in free dandruff (OR = 5.39, 95 % CI 1.50-19.43). Hair follicle count, VEGF, IGF-1, and adherent dandruff parameters were recorded with high heterogeneity. For the systematic review, probiotics have shown potential in improving hair growth and controlling dandruff through modulation of the immune pathway and gut-hair axis. The Wnt/β-catenin pathway, IGF-1 pathway, and VEGF are key molecular pathways in regulating hair follicle growth and maintenance. Conclusions This review found significant aspects exemplified by the properties of probiotics related to promoting hair growth and anti-dandruff effect, which serve as a roadmap for further in-depth studies to make it into pilot scales.

Abstract
Probiotics are live bacteria used as food additives that are beneficial to human health. Lactococcus lactis 11/19-B1 strain isolated from kiwi fruit stimulates innate immunity in silkworms. Intake of yogurt containing the living 11/19-B1 strain significantly decreases the level of low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) in high-LDL volunteers and improves atopic dermatitis in humans. In this study, the probiotic properties of the 11/19-B1 strain, such as sensitivity to antimicrobial compounds, biogenic amine production, some virulence genes for human health, antimicrobial activity, tolerance to gastric acid and bile acids, and ability to adhere to the intestinal mucosa, were evaluated. The 11/19-B1 strain did not show resistance to the tested antimicrobial compounds except cefoxitin and fosfomycin. In addition, no production of amines that can harm humans, the antimicrobial activity required for probiotics, and the absence of adhesion to Caco-2 cells suggest that it is unlikely to attach to the intestinal epithelium. The 11/19-B1 strain grew in 0.3% but not in 1% bile salt. In the presence of 2% skim milk, the survival rate of the 11/19-B1 strain under simulated gastrointestinal tract conditions was 67% even after 4 h. These results indicate that the 11/19-B1 strain may function as a probiotic or paraprobiotic to be utilized in the food industry.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the impact and mechanism of gut microbiota on the enhancement of cognitive function in methamphetamine (MA)-dependent individuals during aerobic exercise training. METHODS A total of sixty-four MA-dependent individuals were randomly assigned to either an aerobic exercise training group (DK, n = 32) or a conventional rehabilitation group (CK, n = 32). After an eight-week intervention, the participants' working memory and inhibition ability were assessed using the Stroop paradigm and Go/NoGo paradigm, respectively. Gut microbiota composition was analyzed using high-throughput sequencing. RESULTS 1) Eight weeks of aerobic exercise training significantly improved the working memory and inhibition ability of MA-dependent individuals (P < 0.05). 2) Following the intervention, the DK group exhibited significantly higher levels of Lactobacillus, Lactococcus lactis, Prevotellaceae, and Ruminococcaceae compared to the CK group. Conversely, the DK group demonstrated significantly lower levels of Desulfovibrio and Akkermansia compared to the CK group. Furthermore, the DK group showed significantly increased metabolic pathways associated with d-Glutaralate and d-Galactate Degradation, as well as the Alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism pathway, compared to the control group. 3) Cognitive function related to MA addiction positively correlated with Bifidobacterium, Dialister, and Adlercreutzia, while negatively correlated with Enterobacteria, Bacillus cereus, Catabacter, and Akkermansia. CONCLUSION Aerobic exercise training enhances working memory and inhibition ability in MA-dependent individuals, thereby mitigating the detrimental effects of MA addiction on cognitive function. Additionally, analysis of gut microbiota suggests that the modulation of gut microbiota and associated metabolic pathways play a role in regulating the improvement of cognitive function in MA-dependent individuals through exercise.

Abstract
Hearing loss places a substantial burden on medical resources across the world and impacts quality of life for those affected. Further, it can occur peripherally and/or centrally. With many possible causes of hearing loss, there is scope for investigating the underlying mechanisms involved. Various signaling pathways connecting gut microbes and the brain (the gut-brain axis) have been identified and well established in a variety of diseases and disorders. However, the role of these pathways in providing links to other parts of the body has not been explored in much depth. Therefore, the aim of this review is to explore potential underlying mechanisms that connect the auditory system to the gut-brain axis. Using select keywords in PubMed, and additional hand-searching in google scholar, relevant studies were identified. In this review we summarize the key players in the auditory-gut-brain axis under four subheadings: anatomical, extracellular, immune and dietary. Firstly, we identify important anatomical structures in the auditory-gut-brain axis, particularly highlighting a direct connection provided by the vagus nerve. Leading on from this we discuss several extracellular signaling pathways which might connect the ear, gut and brain. A link is established between inflammatory responses in the ear and gut microbiome-altering interventions, highlighting a contribution of the immune system. Finally, we discuss the contribution of diet to the auditory-gut-brain axis. Based on the reviewed literature, we propose numerous possible key players connecting the auditory system to the gut-brain axis. In the future, a more thorough investigation of these key players in animal models and human research may provide insight and assist in developing effective interventions for treating hearing loss.

Abstract
Women are prone to iron deficiency because of increased iron excretion associated with menstruation. This is often treated by oral iron supplementation, although this treatment can cause side effects, such as stomach pain and nausea, with low absorption of ingested iron. Previously, a significant increase in serum iron was observed in association with the consumption of foods containing Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris H61 (H61). However, the causal relationship between H61 ingestion and elevated serum iron is still unclear. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to determine the effects of H61 ingestion on the iron status of young women. Healthy young Japanese women (18–25 years of age) ingested either heat-killed H61 or placebo for 4 weeks. Serum iron, transferrin saturation, and ferritin were significantly elevated in the H61 group but remained unchanged in the placebo group. Compared to before the intervention, iron intake remained unchanged during the intervention period, so the change in the iron status of the H61 group was not due to increased iron intake. These results suggest that heat-killed H61 may elevate iron status by enhancing iron absorption.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria are beneficial to Caenorhabditis elegans; however, bacteria acting as probiotics in nematodes may not necessarily have probiotic functions in humans. Lactococcus cremoris subsp. cremoris reportedly has probiotic functions in humans. Therefore, we determined whether the strain FC could exert probiotic effects in C. elegans in terms of improving host defenses and extending life span. Live FC successfully extended the life span and enhanced host defense compared to Escherichia coli OP50 (OP50), a standard food source for C. elegans. The FC-fed worms were tolerant to Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis or Staphylococcus aureus infection and had better survival than the OP50-fed control worms. Further, the chemotaxis index, an indicator of perception ability, was more stable and significantly higher in FC-fed worms than in the control worms. The increase in autofluorescence from advanced glycation end products (AGEs) with aging was also ameliorated in FC-fed worms. FC showed beneficial effects in daf-16 and pmk-1 mutants, but not in skn-1 mutants. Since SKN-1 is the C. elegans ortholog of Nrf2, we measured the transcription of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), which is regulated by Nrf2, in murine macrophages and found that HO-1 mRNA expression was increased >5 times by inoculation with FC cells. Thus, FC could exert antisenescence effects via the SKN-1/Nrf2 pathway. This study showed for the first time that FC supported perceptive function and suppressed AGEs in nematodes as probiotic bacteria. Therefore, C. elegans can be an alternative model to screen for probiotic bacteria that can be used for antisenescence effects in humans. IMPORTANCE Aging is one of our greatest challenges. The World Health Organization proposed that “active aging” might encourage people to continue to work according to their capacities and preferences as they grow old and would prevent or delay disabilities and chronic diseases that are costly to both individuals and the society, considering that disease prevention is more economical than treatment. Probiotic bacteria, such as lactobacilli, are live microorganisms that exert beneficial effects on human health when ingested in sufficient amounts and can promote longevity. The significance of this study is that it revealed the antisenescence and various beneficial effects of the representative probiotic bacterium Lactococcus cremoris subsp. cremoris strain FC exerted via the SKN-1/Nrf2 pathway in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans.

Abstract
Garland chrysanthemum (Glebionis coronaria L.) is an antioxidant-rich leafy vegetable. We found that garland chrysanthemum consumption ameliorated age-related hearing loss (AHL) in C57BL/6J mice, an early onset model. We also found that AHL progression was significantly ameliorated by three of ten products. Metabolome analysis of the 10 products using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy indicated that phytosterols may be involved in the amelioration of AHL. However, the direct inhibitory effect of phytosterol mixture on mouse AHL progression was not identified. These results suggest that garland chrysanthemum consumption delays AHL development in mice and its efficiency varies depending on the source of product. Our findings also suggest that phytosterol content in garland chrysanthemum function as an evaluation marker for the efficiency. Furthermore, to accelerate the search for foods that prevent AHL, we have used these data to develop an automatic threshold determination method for auditory brainstem response using machine learning.

Abstract
C57BL/6J and DBA/2J mice are often used for hearing research because of their early onset and progression of age-related hearing loss (AHL). Here, we report that the hardness of the diet affects the progression of AHL in these mice. When C57BL/6J mice and DBA/2J mice were fed a pellet-type or powder-type standard AIN93M diet, the pellet diet significantly promoted AHL. AHL promotion was eliminated by crushing the pellet diet to a powder. Subsequently, when C57BL/6J mice were fed the pellet-type AIN93M diet obtained from three different manufacturers, two of them significantly promoted AHL. The hardness of the diets was measured, and it was found that the two diets that promoted AHL were significantly harder than the other diet. Next, we attempted to reduce diet hardness by replacing some nutritional ingredients with dried eggs or phosphatidylcholine (PC), and we succeeded in obtaining brittle diets with lower hardness values. Then, C57BL/6J mice were bred with brittle diets for 6 months and the promotion of AHL was suppressed to the equivalent level as the powder diet. Furthermore, when senescence-accelerated mice, SAMP8, were fed a brittle diet for one year, the progression of AHL was also suppressed; however, it did not affect other aging indexes, such as mental and physical performance. We also confirmed that a high-fat pellet diet, which is soft even in pellet form, did not promote AHL. Time-restricted feeding (tRF), which is a chrono-nutritional method to delay aging, ameliorated the promotion of AHL by the hard AIN93M pellets in C57BL/6J mice. These results indicate that the physical form and hardness of diets affect the progression of AHL in mouse models.

Abstract
Currently, there are limited reports available regarding the treatment and prevention of progressive age-related hearing loss. This is because age-related hearing loss is not a critical disease with direct fatalities and has several well-established countermeasures such as hearing aids and cochlear implants. This study evaluated the efficacy of Ninjinyoeito (NYT) in the treatment of age-related hearing loss. C57BL/6J mice were divided into three groups: baseline group, untreated group, and NYT-treated group, with the latter receiving NYT treatment for 2 months. The mice were fed with NYT extract mixed with 4% mouse normal chow. Hearing loss was confirmed by a reduction in intact cell density of the auditory nerve from the age of 5–7 months. The suppression of hearing loss with aging and decrease in the intact cell density of the auditory nerve were significant in mice fed with NYT for 2 months. NYT has been reported to improve blood flow and enhance mitochondrial activity and may exert its protective effects on spiral neurons through these mechanisms. There was no decrease in the size of the stria vascularis from the age of 5–7 months in C57BL/6J mice. The present model failed to reveal the effect of NYT on atrophy of the stria vascularis of the cochlear duct. In conclusion, NYT appears to have a protective effect on the auditory nerve and suppress the progression of age-related hearing loss by reducing age-related auditory nerve degeneration.

Abstract
High-fat diets (HFD) have been thought to increase the risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome, as well as shorten lifespan. On the other hand, chrono-nutritional studies have shown that time-restricted feeding during active phase significantly suppresses the induction of HFD-induced obesity in mouse model. However, the long-term effects of time-restricted HFD feeding on aging are unknown. Therefore, in this study, we set up a total of four groups: mutual combination of ad libitum feeding or night-time-restricted feeding (NtRF) and an HFD or a control diet. We examined their long-term effects in a senescence-accelerated mouse strain, SAMP8, for over a year. Hearing ability, cognitive function, and other behavioral and physiological indexes were evaluated during the study. Unexpectedly, SAMP8 mice did not show early onset of death caused by the prolonged HFD intake, and both HFD and NtRF retarded age-related hearing loss (AHL). NtRF improved grip strength and cognitive memory scores, while HFD weakly suppressed age-related worsening of the appearance scores associated with the eyes. Notably, the HFD also retarded the progression of AHL in both DBA/2J and C57BL/6J mice. These results suggest that HFD prevents aging unless metabolic disorders occur and that HFD and NtRF are independently effective in retarding aging; thus, the combination of HFD and chrono-nutritional feeding may be an effective anti-aging strategy.

Abstract
It has become increasingly evident in recent years that the gut microbiome and the brain communicate in a bidirectional manner, with each possibly affecting the other's functions. Substantial research has aimed to understand the mechanisms of this interaction and to outline strategies for preventing or treating nervous system-related disturbances. This review explores the evidence demonstrating how the gut microbiome may affect brain function in adults, thereby having an impact on stress, anxiety, depression, and cognition. In vitro, in vivo, and human studies reporting an association between a change in the gut microbiome and functional changes in the brain are highlighted, as are studies outlining the mechanisms by which the brain affects the microbiome and the gastrointestinal tract. Possible modes of action to explain how the gut microbiome and the brain functionally affect each other are proposed. Supplemental probiotics to combat brain-related dysfunction offer a promising approach, provided future research elucidates their mode of action and possible side effects. Further studies are warranted to establish how pre- and probiotic interventions may help to balance brain function in healthy and diseased individuals.

Abstract
In order to clarify the effects of the Lactococcus lactis (L. lactis) 11/19-B1 strain, a double-blind controlled study of yogurt fermented with the strain was carried out. For the study, two kinds of yogurt, the control and test yogurt, were prepared; the control yogurt was fermented with Streptococcus thermophiles, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subspecies bulgaricus, and Lactobacillus acidophilus, and the test yogurt was enriched with L. lactis 11/19-B1 and Bifidobacterium lactis (B. lactis) BB-12 strains. Seventy-six volunteers who had not received treatment with pharmaceuticals were randomly divided into two groups with each group ingesting 80 g of either the test or control yogurt every day for 8 weeks. Before and after yogurt intake, fasting blood was taken and blood sugar, blood lipids, and anti-cytomegalovirus cellular immunity were estimated. In the test yogurt group, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) was significantly decreased (159.1 ± 25.7 to 149.3 ± 24.4; p = 0.02), but this effect was not observed in the control yogurt group. When the test yogurt group was divided into two groups based on LDL levels of over or under 120 mg/dL, this effect was only observed in the high LDL group. No LDL-lowering effect of B. lactis BB-12 strain was previously reported; therefore, the hypocholesterolemic effects observed in this study are thought to be caused by the L. lactis 11/19-B1 strain alone or its combination with the B. lactis BB-12 strain.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria play an essential role in the food industry in the manufacture of many fermented products (cheese, yogurt, fermented vegetables, etc.). Application of these organisms is now being extended to the area of health improvement, as their probiotic activities become known. Probiotics are defined as viable microorganisms that exert a beneficial effect on the health of the host when they are ingested in sufficient quantity. Lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria isolated from the human intestine are the most common probiotics used for human consumption. The development of new probiotics with new beneficial effects is eagerly awaited in the food industry. This review introduces Lactococcus, which are one of the genera of lactic acid bacteria and are mainly isolated from dairy products and fermented vegetables, as new probiotics, focusing especially on Lactococcus lactis H61, which improves skin status in Japanese women with oral intake of heat‐killed or live cells. The deduced mechanisms associated with the beneficial effects of strain H61 are also discussed.

Abstract
Metamifop is universally used in agriculture as a post-emergence aryloxyphenoxy propionate herbicide (AOPP), however its microbial degradation mechanism remains unclear. Consortium ME-1 isolated from AOPP-contaminated soil can degrade metamifop completely after 6 days and utilize it as the carbon source for bacterial growth. Meanwhile, consortium ME-1 possessed the ability to degrade metamifop stably under a wide range of pH (6.0-10.0) or temperature (20-42 °C). HPLC-MS analysis shows that N-(2-fluorophenyl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenoxy)-N-methyl propionamide, 2-(4-hydroxyphenoxy)-propionic acid, 6-chloro-2-benzoxazolinone and N-methyl-2-fluoroaniline, were detected and identified as four intermediate metabolites. Based on the metabolites identified, a putative metabolic pathway of metamifop was proposed for the first time. In addition, the consortium ME-1 was also able to transform or degrade other AOPP such as fenoxaprop-p-ethyl, clodinafop-propargyl, quizalofop-p-ethyl and cyhalofop-butyl. Moreover, the community structure of ME-1 with lower microbial diversity compared with the initial soil sample was investigated by high throughput sequencing. β-Proteobacteria and Sphingobacteria were the largest class with sequence percentages of 46.6% and 27.55% at the class level. In addition, 50 genera were classified in consortium ME-1, of which Methylobacillus, Sphingobacterium, Bordetella and Flavobacterium were the dominant genera with sequence percentages of 25.79, 25.61, 14.68 and 9.55%, respectively.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the impact of one probiotics combination on the neurodevelopment of very preterm children at 2-5 years corrected gestational age (CA). DESIGN Follow-up study of survivors of a double-blinded, placebo-controlled, randomised trial of probiotic effects on late-onset sepsis in very preterm infants that found reduced necrotising enterocolitis. SETTING 10 tertiary perinatal centres in Australia and New Zealand. PATIENTS 1099 very preterm infants born <32 weeks' gestation and weighing <1500 g. INTERVENTION Probiotics (Bifidobacterium infantis, Streptococcus thermophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis) or placebo administered from birth until discharge home or term CA, whichever came sooner. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Major neurodevelopmental impairment comprised any of moderate/severe cerebral palsy (Gross Motor Function Classification System score 2-5), motor impairment (Bayley-III Motor Composite Scale <-2SD or Movement Assessment Battery for Children <15th centile if >42 months' CA), cognitive impairment (Bayley-III Composite Cognitive or Language Scales <-2SD or Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence Full Scale Intelligence Quotient <-2SD if >42 months' CA), blindness or deafness. RESULTS Outcome data were available for 735 (67%) participants, with 71 deaths and 664/1028 survivors assessed at a mean age of 30 months. Survival free of major neurodevelopmental impairment was comparable between groups (probiotics 281 (75.3%) vs placebo 271 (74.9%); relative risk 1.01 (95% CI 0.93 to 1.09)). Rates of deafness were lower in probiotic-treated children (0.6% vs 3.4%). CONCLUSION Administration of the probiotics combination Bifidobacterium infantis, Streptococcus thermophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis to very preterm babies from soon after birth until discharge home or term CA did not adversely affect neurodevelopment or behaviour in early childhood.
