Time-Stretched Spectroscopy by the Quantum Zeno Effect: The Case of Auger Decay

A tenet of time-resolved spectroscopy is "faster laser pulses for shorter timescales". Here, we suggest turning this paradigm around, and slowing down the system dynamics via repeated measurements, to do spectroscopy on longer timescales. This is the principle of the quantum Zeno effect. We exemplify our approach with the Auger process, and find that repeated measurements increase the core-hole lifetime, redistribute the kinetic energy of Auger electrons, and alter entanglement formation. We further provide an explicit experimental protocol for atomic Li, to make our proposal concrete.

Padé resummation of many-body perturbation theories

In a typical scenario the diagrammatic many-body perturbation theory generates asymptotic series. Despite non-convergence, the asymptotic expansions are useful when truncated to a finite number of terms. This is the reason for the popularity of leading-order methods such as the GW approximation in condensed matter, molecular and atomic physics. Appropriate truncation order required for the accurate description of strongly correlated materials is, however, not known a priori. Here an efficient method based on the Padé approximation is introduced for the regularization of perturbative series allowing to perform higher-order self-consistent calculations and to make quantitative predictions on the convergence of many-body perturbation theories. The theory is extended towards excited states where the Wick theorem is not directly applicable. Focusing on the plasmon-assisted photoemission from graphene, we treat diagrammatically electrons coupled to the excited state plasmons and predict new spectral features that can be observed in the time-resolved measurements.

Quantitative first-principles calculations of valence and core excitation spectra of solid C60

We present calculated valence and C 1s near-edge excitation spectra of solid C60 and experimental results measured with high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The near-edge calculations are carried out using three different methods: solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) as implemented in the OCEAN suite (Obtaining Core Excitations with ab initio methods and the NIST BSE solver), the excited-electron core-hole approach (XCH), and the constrained-occupancy method using the Stockholm-Berlin core-excitation code, StoBe. The three methods give similar results and are in good agreement with experiment, though the BSE results are the most accurate. The BSE formalism is also used to carry out valence level calculations using the NIST Bethe-Salpeter Equation solver (NBSE). Theoretical results include self-energy corrections to the band gap and band widths, lifetime-damping effects, and Debye-Waller effects in the core-excitation case. A comparison of spectral features to those observed experimentally illustrates the sensitivity of certain features to computational details, such as self-energy corrections to the band structure and core-hole screening.
