1700 nm dispersion managed mode-locked bismuth fiber laser

Raman dissipative soliton source of ultrashort pulses in NIR-III spectral window

We present a novel fiber source of ultrashort pulses at the wavelength of 1660 nm based on the technique of external cavity Raman dissipative soliton generation. The output energy of the generated 30 ps chirped pulses is in the range of 0.5-3.6 nJ with a slope efficiency of 57%. Numerical simulations are in excellent agreement with the experimental results and the shape of the compressed pulses. The compressed pulses consist of a central part with a duration of 300 fs and a weak pedestal. Our results clearly demonstrate the potential to extend the spectral range of the Raman-assisted technique for generating ultra-short pulses to new frequency regions, including biomedical windows. This paves the way for the development of new dissipative soliton sources in these bands.

1.7 µm sub-200 fs vortex beams generation from a thulium-doped all-fiber laser

The pulsed 1.7 µm vortex beams (VBs) has significant research prospects in the fields of imaging and material processing. We experimentally demonstrate the generation of sub-200 fs pulsed VBs at 1.7 µm based on a home-made mode-selective coupler (MSC). Through dispersion management technology in a thulium-doped fiber laser, the stable linearly polarized VBs pulse directly emitting from the cavity is measured to be 186 fs with central wavelength of 1721.2 nm. By controlling the linear superposition of LP11 modes, cylindrical vector beams (CVBs) can also be obtained. In addition, a variety of bound states pulsed VBs at 1.7 µm can also be observed. Our finding provides an effective way to generate ultrashort pulsed VBs and CVBs at 1.7 µm waveband.

1.3/1.4 µm dual-wave band dissipative soliton resonance in a passively mode-locked Bi-doped phosphosilicate fiber laser

We report the 1.3/1.4 µm dual-wave band dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) in a passively mode-locked bismuth-doped phosphosilicate fiber (Bi-PSF) laser. The low-water-peak Bi-PSF with two bismuth active centers associated with silicon and phosphorus supports the O+E-band gain. Using a 1239 nm home-made Raman fiber laser as pump source and nonlinear amplifying loop mirror for initiating mode-locking, stable DSR operation at 1343 and 1406 nm is achieved with the spectral bandwidth of 12 and 16 nm. The pulse duration with the pump power increases from 62 to 270 ps with a repetition frequency of 4.069 MHz. The average power is 11.05 mW corresponding to the maximum energy of 2.7 nJ. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first demonstration of a mode-locked fiber laser in the ∼1.38 µm water absorption band and the O+E dual-wave band operation for applications in all-spectral-band communications, bio-medical imaging, and terahertz difference frequency generation.

1.7 µm - 1.73 µm tunable ultrafast Raman fiber laser pumped by 1.6 µm dissipative soliton pulses

Here, we report an all-fiber tunable ultrafast Raman laser synchronously pumped by a home-made 1.6 µm dissipative soliton (DS) picosecond (ps) laser, which produces Stokes light beyond 1.7 µm. The Raman gain medium is a segment of highly germanium-doped (Ge-doped) fiber offering a high Raman gain coefficient at the target wavelength. Once the Raman conversion cavity is synchronized with the pump light, a stable 1.7 µm Raman laser (the first Stokes light) can be obtained at a low pump threshold. The maximum output power of the 1.7 µm Raman laser can reach ∼ 22.62 mW. The wavelength tuning operation is independent of tunable pump source and intra-cavity filter. By adjusting the intra-cavity delay line simply, the different spectral component within the broad Raman gain bandwidth can be selectively synchronized with the pump light so that the Raman laser wavelength can be tuned continuously from 1702.6 nm ∼ 1728.84 nm. This tunable 1.7 µm waveband ultrafast laser will have potential applications in multiphoton microscopy for e.g. deep bio-imaging.

1.7 µm gain-switched and mode-locked hybrid Tm-Ho codoped fiber laser signal generation and optimization

We propose and experimentally demonstrate 1.7 µm gain-switched and mode-locked hybrid laser signal generation using a modulated pump and the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) effect. In the laser scheme, a 1.55 µm amplified modulated optical signal was used as a homemade pump. A bidirectional pumping configuration was adopted by splitting the homemade pump. A 1 m long thulium-holmium (Tm-Ho) codoped fiber was used as the gain medium. A fiber Bragg grating was employed as a spectral filter. The mode-locked laser pulse was obtained with a central wavelength of 1724 nm. The repetition rate was 11.81 MHz and the pulse width was 65.27 ps. Additionally, the gain-switched pulse sequences with a repetition rate from 50 kHz to 200 kHz were obtained by the modulated pump. Moreover, the mode-locked pulse train was filtered and modulated by the shape of the gain-switched pulse, and the hybrid pulse train was then obtained. Furthermore, the hybrid laser signals were analyzed and optimized by applying different waveforms of the modulated pump. The experimental results showed that the generated laser pulse driven by the sinusoidal signal has a better SNR (49.39 dB).

Highly Efficient Nanosecond 1.7 μm Fiber Gas Raman Laser by H2-Filled Hollow-Core Photonic Crystal Fibers

We report here a high-power, highly efficient, wavelength-tunable nanosecond pulsed 1.7 μm fiber laser based on hydrogen-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HC-PCFs) by rotational stimulated Raman scattering. When a 9-meter-long HC-PCF filled with 30 bar hydrogen is pumped by a homemade tunable 1.5 μm pulsed fiber amplifier, the maximum average Stokes power of 3.3 W at 1705 nm is obtained with a slope efficiency of 84%, and the slope efficiency achieves the highest recorded value for 1.7 μm pulsed fiber lasers. When the pump pulse repetition frequency is 1.3 MHz with a pulse width of approximately 15 ns, the average output power is higher than 3 W over the whole wavelength tunable range from 1693 nm to 1705 nm, and the slope efficiency is higher than 80%. A steady-state theoretical model is used to achieve the maximum Stokes power in hydrogen-filled HC-PCFs, and the simulation results accord well with the experiments. This work presents a new opportunity for highly efficient tunable pulsed fiber lasers at the 1.7 μm band.

High-energy normal-dispersion fiber optical parametric chirped-pulse oscillator

We demonstrate a fiber optical parametric chirped-pulse oscillator (FOPCPO) pumped in the normal-dispersion regime by chirped pulses at 1.036 µm. Highly chirped idler pulses tunable from 1210 nm to 1270 nm with energies higher than 250 nJ are generated from our system, along with signal pulses tunable from 870 nm to 910 nm. Numerical simulations demonstrate that further energy scaling is possible and paves the way for the use of such FOPCPOs for applications requiring high-energy, compact, and low-noise sources, such as in biophotonics or spectroscopy.

All-fiber short-wavelength tunable mode-locked fiber laser using normal dispersion thulium-doped fiber

We report an all-fiber high pulse energy ultrafast laser and amplifier operating at the short wavelength side of the thulium (Tm) emission band. An in-house W-type normal dispersion Tm-doped fiber (NDTDF) exhibits a bending-induced distributed short-pass filtering effect that efficiently suppresses the otherwise dominant long wavelength emission. By changing the bending diameter of the fiber, we demonstrated a tunable mode-locked Tm-doped fiber laser with a very wide tunable range of 152 nm spanning from 1740 nm to 1892 nm. Pulses at a central wavelength of 1755 nm were able to be amplified in an all-fiber configuration using the W-type NDTDF, without the use of any artificial short-pass filter or pulse stretcher. The all-fiber amplifier delivers 2.76 ps pulses with an energy of ∼32.7 nJ without pulse break-up, due to the normal dispersion nature of the gain fiber, which marks so far, the highest energy amongst fiber lasers in the 1700 nm-1800 nm region.

Effect of pump wavelength and temperature on the spectral performance of BAC-Al in bismuth-doped aluminosilicate fibers

The near-infrared luminescence of Bi-doped aluminosilicate fiber within pump wavelengths between 710 and 990 nm and under varying pump powers and operation temperatures has been investigated systematically. It is revealed that there exist two emission bands peaking around 1120 and at 1300 nm, which are believed to be associated with two different aluminum-related bismuth active centers (BAC-Al1 and BAC-Al2); the BAC-Al2 is found to be more efficiently excited at a lower temperature within the spectral range of 790-850 nm. This is the first time, to the best of our knowledge, that two sub-bands of BAC-Al are identified. The thermal annealing effect on the luminescence of BACs is also studied under 830 nm pumping. In contrast to the quenching of BAC-Si, the luminescence intensity of BAC-Al1 is enhanced by 1.5 times after 500°C heating and subsequent cooling. The results demonstrate an effective strategy for tuning the emission scheme in the range of 1100-1400 nm by adjusting the excitation wavelength and operation temperature.

NALM-based bismuth-doped fiber laser at 1.7 μm

We demonstrate, to the best of our knowledge, the first bismuth-doped fiber laser operating at 1.7 μm mode-locked by means of Kerr nonlinearity. The laser setup has a figure-of-eight all-fiber design with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) and yields 17 ps pulses with a 3.57 MHz repetition rate and the energy 84 pJ. Using the master oscillator power amplifier scheme with a bismuth fiber amplifier, the output pulse energy of 5.7 nJ was achieved. Further pulse compression in the fiber compressor shortened pulses to 630 fs. The operation of the master oscillator was modeled using the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Calculated data are in good agreement with experimental results.

Dissipative soliton resonance in Bismuth-doped fiber laser

We experimentally demonstrate the generation of dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) in a passively mode-locked Bi-doped fiber ring laser based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) technique. The DSR with the central wavelength of 1169.5 nm has a repetition rate of 343.7 kHz. By purely increasing the pump power, the DSR evolves from Gaussian shape to rectangular shape with the duration extending from 2.1 ns to 13.1 ns, while keeping the pulse amplitude and the 3-dB spectrum bandwidth almost constant. The single-pulse energy reaches 24.82 nJ. Furthermore, we construct a lumped model to reproduce the mode-locking process and the traits of the DSR pulse. The obtained results indicate that it could achieve higher pulse energy in mode-locked Bi-doped fiber laser by generating DSR.

Electronically tunable thulium-holmium mode-locked fiber laser for the 1700-1800 nm wavelength band

We demonstrate a widely tunable, mode-locked fiber laser capable of producing sub-picosecond pulses between 1705 and 1805 nm. The 100 nm tuning range is achieved by using intracavity acousto-optic tunable filter. The laser delivers highly stable pulses via self-starting hybrid mode-locking triggered by frequency-shifting and nonlinear polarization evolution.
