Porous polymer magnetic adsorbents for dye wastewater treatment

Dye wastewater discharged from industries has caused serious environmental problems. The recent decade has witnessed adsorption technology emerging as an advanced dye wastewater treatment method with great potential Therefore, we fabricated two kinds of magnetic porous adsorbents (HSF and HSVF) with different specific surface areas and activity sites. Both of which exhibit excellent performance with remarkable dye adsorption capacities, especially HSVF. We further investigated their adsorption kinetic and isotherm in detail. Therein, HSVF showed a nice desorption capacity, and it could be recycled rapidly by magnetism, which exhibited the advantages of effective, easy operation, and low cost. In addition, their adsorption kinetic and isotherm were further studied and compared in detail. The results revealed that introducing strong active sites could improve both the adsorption capacity and rate effectively even though sacrificing part of specific surface areas, indicating that active sites might play a dominant role during the dye adsorption process.

Smart Synthesis of Hollow Microporous Organic Capsules with a Polyaniline Modified Shell

In this work, novel hypercrosslinked polymer-based hollow microporous organic capsules with a polyaniline (PANI)-modified shell (PANI@S-HMOCs) are prepared by in-situ polymerization of aniline in the porous structure of the sulfonated hollow microporous organic capsules (S-HMOCs). PANI@S-HMOC1, PANI@S-HMOC2, and PANI@S-HMOC3 are made by adjusting S-HMOCs and aniline weight ratios of 4:1 and 3:1, and 2:1, respectively. The characterizations of PANI@S-HMOCs demonstrate that electrostatic interaction between aniline and sulfonic acid groups plays an important role in encapsulating PANI in the pores of the shell. The content of PANI showed an evident effect on the porosity of PANI@S-HMOCs, and an appropriate polyaniline loading amount may increase the surface area. PANI@S-HMOC1 and PANI@S-HMOC2 have higher BET surface areas (529 and 503 m² g^-1 ) than S-HMOCs (424 m² g^-1 ), but PANI@S-HMOC3 has lower BET surface area (380 m² g^-1 ). Based on the structural and textural features, PANI@S-HMOC2 shows good adsorption performance for Cr(VI) from aqueous media (156 mg g^-1 , pH = 2, and 27 mg g^-1 , pH = 7).

Hydroxyapatite reinforced inorganic-organic hybrid nanocomposite as high-performance adsorbents for bilirubin removal in vitro and in pig models

Highly efficient removal of bilirubin from whole blood directly by hemoperfusion for liver failure therapy remains a challenge in the clinical field due to the low adsorption capacity, poor mechanical strength and low biocompatibility of adsorbents. In this work, a new class of nanocomposite adsorbents was constructed through an inorganic-organic co-crosslinked nanocomposite network between vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES)-functionalized hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (V-Hap) and non-ionic styrene-divinylbenzene (PS-DVB) resins (PS-DVB/V-Hap) using suspension polymerization. Notably, our adsorbent demonstrated substantially improved mechanical performance compared to the pure polymer, with the hardness and modulus increasing by nearly 3 and 2.5 times, respectively. Moreover, due to the development of a mesoporous structure, the prepared PS-DVB/V-Hap3 exhibited an ideal adsorption capacity of 40.27 mg g-1. More importantly, the obtained adsorbent beads showed outstanding blood compatibility and biocompatibility. Furthermore, in vivo extracorporeal hemoperfusion verified the efficacy and biosafety of the adsorbent for directly removing bilirubin from whole blood in pig models, and this material could potentially prevent liver damage and improve clinical outcomes. Taken together, the results suggest that PS-DVB/V-Hap3 beads can be used in commercial adsorption columns to threat hyperbilirubinemia patients through hemoperfusion, thus replacing the existing techniques where plasma separation is initially required.

Fe3O4@Void@Microporous Organic Polymer-Based Multifunctional Drug Delivery Systems: Targeting, Imaging, and Magneto-Thermal Behaviors

Multifunctional drug delivery systems were designed and engineered by template synthesis of a microporous organic polymer (MOP) and by postsynthetic modification. Hollow MOP spheres bearing Fe₃O₄ yolks (Fe₃O₄@Void@MOP) were prepared by the synthesis of MOP on Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ nanoparticles and by successive silica etching. In addition to the magneto-thermal function of Fe₃O₄ yolks, an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature was incorporated into the Fe₃O₄@Void@MOP through a homocoupling of tetra(4-ethynylphenyl)ethylene to form Fe₃O₄@Void@MOP-TE. Folate groups were further introduced into Fe₃O₄@Void@MOP-TE through the postsynthetic modification based on the thiol-yne click reaction. The resultant Fe₃O₄@Void@MOP-TE-FA showed multifunctionality in antitumoral therapy via folate receptor targeting, doxorubicin delivery, AIE-based imaging, and the magneto-thermal feature.

Microporous Nanotubes and Nanospheres with Iron-Catechol Sites: Efficient Lewis Acid Catalyst and Support for Ag Nanoparticles in CO2 Fixation Reaction

Fe^III -containing hyper-crosslinked microporous nanotubes (FeNTs) and nanospheres (FeNSs) are synthesized through the reaction of catechol and dimethoxymethane in the presence of FeCl₃ or CF₃ SO₃ H. Both FeNTs and FeNSs demonstrate excellent catalytic activity in Lewis acid catalysis (hydrolysis and regioselective methanolysis of styrene oxide) and tandem catalysis involving a sequential oxidation-cyclization process, which selectively converts benzyl alcohol to 2-phenyl benzimidazole. Apart from Lewis acidity, the FeNTs and FeNSs also showed CO₂ uptake capacities of 2.6 and 2.2 mmol g^-1 , respectively, at a pressure of 1 atm and temperature of 273 K. Furthermore, Ag nanoparticles are immobilized successfully on the surfaces of FeNTs and FeNSs by the liquid-phase impregnation method to prepare Ag@FeNT and Ag@FeNS nanocomposites, which show high catalytic activity for the selective fixation of CO₂ to phenylacetylene to yield phenylpropiolic acid at 60 °C and 1 atm CO₂ pressure. Hence, Fe^III -catechol-containing hyper-crosslinked nanotubes and nanospheres have huge potential not only as Lewis acid catalysts, but also as excellent supports for immobilizing Ag nanoparticles in the design of a robust catalyst for the carboxylation of terminal alkynes, which has wide scope in catalysis and environmental research.

Soluble Hyperbranched Porous Organic Polymers

Soluble porous organic polymers (SPOPs) are currently the subject of extensive investigation due to the enhanced processability compared to insoluble counterparts. Here, a new concept for the construction of SPOPs is presented, which combines the unique topological structure of hyperbranched polymers with rigid building blocks. By using this facile, one-step strategy, a class of novel SPOPs which possess surface areas up to 646 m² g^-1 have been synthesized. The extended π-conjugated backbone affords the polymers bright fluorescence under UV irradiation. Interestingly, after dissolution in a suitable solvent that was slowly evaporated, the polymers retain a large extent of porosity. The SPOPs are potential candidates for gas storage and separation, photovoltaic, and biological applications. In particular, due to the presence of an internal porous structure and open conformations, they show high drug loading efficiency (1.91 g of ibuprofen per gram), which is considerably higher than conventional porous organic polymers.

Hypercrosslinked porous polymer materials: design, synthesis, and applications

Hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) are a series of permanent microporous polymer materials initially reported by Davankov, and have received an increasing level of research interest. In recent years, HCPs have experienced rapid growth due to their remarkable advantages such as diverse synthetic methods, easy functionalization, high surface area, low cost reagents and mild operating conditions. Judicious selection of monomers, appropriate length crosslinkers and optimized reaction conditions yielded a well-developed polymer framework with an adjusted porous topology. Post fabrication of the as developed network facilitates the incorporation of various chemical functionalities that may lead to interesting properties and enhance the selection toward a specific application. To date, numerous HCPs have been prepared by post-crosslinking polystyrene-based precursors, one-step self-polycondensation or external crosslinking strategies. The advent of these methodologies has prompted researchers to construct well-defined porous polymer networks with customized micromorphology and functionalities. In this review, we describe not only the basic synthetic principles and strategies of HCPs, but also the advancements in the structural and morphological study as well as the frontiers of potential applications in energy and environmental fields such as gas storage, carbon capture, removal of pollutants, molecular separation, catalysis, drug delivery, sensing etc.

Hyper-Cross-Linking Mediated Self-Assembly Strategy To Synthesize Hollow Microporous Organic Nanospheres

Hollow microporous organic nanospheres (H-MONs) are prepared by using polylactide-b-polystyrene diblock copolymers (PLA-b-PS) as the precursor via a hyper-cross-linking mediated self-assembly strategy, in which the hyper-cross-linking PS block forms the microporous organic shell framework, and the degradable PLA block produces the hollow mesoporous core structure. The formation mechanism, morphology, and porosity parameters of the resulting H-MONs are systematically investigated. Moreover, based on the hyper-cross-linking generated rigid microporous organic frameworks, hollow microporous carbon nanospheres (H-MCNs) can be achieved by further pyrolysis progress. The obtained H-MCNs as electrode materials of a supercapacitor exhibit excellent electrochemical performance with specific capacitances of up to 145 F g^-1 at 0.2 A g^-1, with almost no capacitance loss even after 5000 cycles at 10 A g^-1. More especially, H-MONs can be further act as "nanoreactors" for the synthesis of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles within hollow cores to construct magnetic core-shell Fe₃O₄@H-MONs nanocomposite materials. Our strategy represents a new avenue for the preparation of hollow morphology-controlled microporous organic polymers with various potential applications.
