Origin of the low critical observing temperature of the quantum anomalous Hall effect in V-doped (Bi, Sb)2Te3 film

Magneto-optical Effects of an Artificially Layered Ferromagnetic Topological Insulator with a TC of 160 K

Magnetic topological insulators are a fertile platform for studying the interplay between magnetism and topology. The unique electronic band structure can induce exotic transport and optical properties. However, a comprehensive optical study at both near-infrared and terahertz frequencies has been lacking. Here, we report magneto-optical effects from a heterostructure of a Cr-incorporated topological insulator, CBST. By measuring the magneto-optical Kerr effect, we observe a high temperature ferromagnetic transition (160 K) in the CBST film. We also use time-domain terahertz polarimetry to reveal a terahertz Faraday rotation of 1.5 mrad and a terahertz Kerr rotation of 3.6 mrad at 2 K. The calculated terahertz Hall conductance is 0.42 e2/h. Our work shows the optical responses of an artificially layered magnetic topological insulator, paving the way toward a high-temperature quantum anomalous Hall effect via heterostructure engineering.

3D Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in Magnetic Topological Insulator Trilayers of Hundred-Nanometer Thickness

Magnetic topological states refer to a class of exotic phases in magnetic materials with the non-trivial topological property determined by magnetic spin configurations. An example of such states is the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state, which is a zero magnetic field manifestation of the quantum Hall effect. Current research in this direction focuses on QAH insulators with a thickness of less than 10 nm. Here, molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) is employed to synthesize magnetic TI trilayers with a thickness of up to ≈106 nm. It is found that these samples exhibit well-quantized Hall resistance and vanishing longitudinal resistance at zero magnetic field. By varying the magnetic dopants, gate voltages, temperature, and external magnetic fields, the properties of these thick QAH insulators are examined and the robustness of the 3D QAH effect is demonstrated. The realization of the well-quantized 3D QAH effect indicates that the nonchiral side surface states of the thick magnetic TI trilayers are gapped and thus do not affect the QAH quantization. The 3D QAH insulators of hundred-nanometer thickness provide a promising platform for the exploration of fundamental physics, including axion physics and image magnetic monopole, and the advancement of electronic and spintronic devices to circumvent Moore's law.

Manipulating Topological Phases in Magnetic Topological Insulators

Magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) are a group of materials that feature topological band structures with concurrent magnetism, which can offer new opportunities for technological advancements in various applications, such as spintronics and quantum computing. The combination of topology and magnetism introduces a rich spectrum of topological phases in MTIs, which can be controllably manipulated by tuning material parameters such as doping profiles, interfacial proximity effect, or external conditions such as pressure and electric field. In this paper, we first review the mainstream MTI material platforms where the quantum anomalous Hall effect can be achieved, along with other exotic topological phases in MTIs. We then focus on highlighting recent developments in modulating topological properties in MTI with finite-size limit, pressure, electric field, and magnetic proximity effect. The manipulation of topological phases in MTIs provides an exciting avenue for advancing both fundamental research and practical applications. As this field continues to develop, further investigations into the interplay between topology and magnetism in MTIs will undoubtedly pave the way for innovative breakthroughs in the fundamental understanding of topological physics as well as practical applications.

Topological quantum devices: a review

The introduction of the concept of topology into condensed matter physics has greatly deepened our fundamental understanding of transport properties of electrons as well as all other forms of quasi particles in solid materials. It has also fostered a paradigm shift from conventional electronic/optoelectronic devices to novel quantum devices based on topology-enabled quantum device functionalities that transfer energy and information with unprecedented precision, robustness, and efficiency. In this article, the recent research progress in topological quantum devices is reviewed. We first outline the topological spintronic devices underlined by the spin-momentum locking property of topology. We then highlight the topological electronic devices based on quantized electron and dissipationless spin conductivity protected by topology. Finally, we discuss quantum optoelectronic devices with topology-redefined photoexcitation and emission. The field of topological quantum devices is only in its infancy, we envision many significant advances in the near future.

Intermixing-Driven Surface and Bulk Ferromagnetism in the Quantum Anomalous Hall Candidate MnBi6 Te10

The recent realizations of the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in MnBi₂ Te₄ and MnBi₄ Te₇ benchmark the (MnBi₂ Te₄ )(Bi₂ Te₃ )_n family as a promising hotbed for further QAHE improvements. The family owes its potential to its ferromagnetically (FM) ordered MnBi₂ Te₄ septuple layers (SLs). However, the QAHE realization is complicated in MnBi₂ Te₄ and MnBi₄ Te₇ due to the substantial antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling between the SLs. An FM state, advantageous for the QAHE, can be stabilized by interlacing the SLs with an increasing number n of Bi₂ Te₃ quintuple layers (QLs). However, the mechanisms driving the FM state and the number of necessary QLs are not understood, and the surface magnetism remains obscure. Here, robust FM properties in MnBi₆ Te₁₀ (n = 2) with T_c ≈ 12 K are demonstrated and their origin is established in the Mn/Bi intermixing phenomenon by a combined experimental and theoretical study. The measurements reveal a magnetically intact surface with a large magnetic moment, and with FM properties similar to the bulk. This investigation thus consolidates the MnBi₆ Te₁₀ system as perspective for the QAHE at elevated temperatures.

Confinement-Induced Chiral Edge Channel Interaction in Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulators

In quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators, the interior is insulating but electrons can travel with zero resistance along one-dimensional (1D) conducting paths known as chiral edge channels (CECs). These CECs have been predicted to be confined to the 1D edges and exponentially decay in the two-dimensional (2D) bulk. In this Letter, we present the results of a systematic study of QAH devices fashioned in a Hall bar geometry of different widths under gate voltages. At the charge neutral point, the QAH effect persists in a Hall bar device with a width of only ∼72  nm, implying the intrinsic decaying length of CECs is less than ∼36  nm. In the electron-doped regime, we find that the Hall resistance deviates quickly from the quantized value when the sample width is less than 1  μm. Our theoretical calculations suggest that the wave function of CEC first decays exponentially and then shows a long tail due to disorder-induced bulk states. Therefore, the deviation from the quantized Hall resistance in narrow QAH samples originates from the interaction between two opposite CECs mediated by disorder-induced bulk states in QAH insulators, consistent with our experimental observations.

Environmental Doping-Induced Degradation of the Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulators

The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator carries dissipation-free chiral edge current and thus provides a unique opportunity to develop energy-efficient transformative information technology. Despite promising advances, the QAH insulator has thus far eluded any practical applications. In addition to its low working temperature, the QAH state in magnetically doped topological insulators usually deteriorates with time in ambient conditions. In this work, we store three QAH devices with similar initial properties in different environments. The QAH device without a protection layer in air shows clear degradation and becomes hole-doped. The QAH device kept in an argon glovebox without a protection layer shows no measurable degradation after 560 h, and the device protected by a 3 nm AlO_x protection layer in air shows minimal degradation with stable QAH properties. Our work shows a route to preserve the dissipation-free chiral edge state in QAH devices for potential applications in quantum information technology.

Criteria for Realizing Room-Temperature Electrical Transport Applications of Topological Materials

The unusual electronic states found in topological materials can enable a new generation of devices and technologies, yet a long-standing challenge has been finding materials without deleterious parallel bulk conduction. This can arise either from defects or thermally activated carriers. Here, the criteria that materials need to meet to realize transport properties dominated by the topological states, a necessity for a topological device, are clarified. This is demonstrated for 3D topological insulators, 3D Dirac materials, and 1D quantum anomalous Hall insulators, though this can be applied to similar systems. The key parameters are electronic bandgap, dielectric constant, and carrier effective mass, which dictate under what circumstances (defect density, temperature, etc.) the unwanted bulk state will conduct in parallel to the topological states. As these are fundamentally determined by the basic atomic properties, simple chemical arguments can be used to navigate the phase space to ultimately find improved materials. This will enable rapid identification of new systems with improved properties, which is crucial to designing new material systems and push a new generation of topological technologies.

Concurrence of quantum anomalous Hall and topological Hall effects in magnetic topological insulator sandwich heterostructures

The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is a consequence of non-zero Berry curvature in momentum space. The QAH insulator harbours dissipation-free chiral edge states in the absence of an external magnetic field. However, the topological Hall (TH) effect, a hallmark of chiral spin textures, is a consequence of real-space Berry curvature. Here, by inserting a topological insulator (TI) layer between two magnetic TI layers, we realized the concurrence of the TH effect and the QAH effect through electric-field gating. The TH effect is probed by bulk carriers, whereas the QAH effect is characterized by chiral edge states. The appearance of the TH effect in the QAH insulating regime is a consequence of chiral magnetic domain walls that result from the gate-induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and occurs during the magnetization reversal process in the magnetic TI sandwich samples. The coexistence of chiral edge states and chiral spin textures provides a platform for proof-of-concept dissipationless spin-textured spintronic applications.

Probing the low-temperature limit of the quantum anomalous Hall effect

Quantum anomalous Hall effect has been observed in magnetically doped topological insulators. However, full quantization, up until now, is limited within the sub-1 K temperature regime, although the material's magnetic ordering temperature can go beyond 100 K. Here, we study the temperature limiting factors of the effect in Cr-doped (BiSb)2Te3 systems using both transport and magneto-optical methods. By deliberate control of the thin-film thickness and doping profile, we revealed that the low occurring temperature of quantum anomalous Hall effect in current material system is a combined result of weak ferromagnetism and trivial band involvement. Our findings may provide important insights into the search for high-temperature quantum anomalous Hall insulator and other topologically related phenomena.

Electronic States and Magnetic Response of MnBi2Te4 by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy

Exotic quantum phenomena have been demonstrated in recently discovered intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi₂Te₄. At its two-dimensional limit, the quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion insulator state were observed in odd and even layers of MnBi₂Te₄, respectively. Here, we employ low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy to study the electronic properties of MnBi₂Te₄. The quasiparticle interference patterns indicate that the electronic structures on the topmost layer of MnBi₂Te₄ are different from those of the expected out-of-plane A-type antiferromagnetic phase. The topological surface states may be embedded in deeper layers beneath the topmost surface. Such novel electronic structure is presumably related to the modification of crystalline structure during sample cleaving and reorientation of the magnetic moment of Mn atoms near the surface. Mn dopants substituted at the Bi site on the second atomic layer are observed. The electronic structures fluctuate at atomic scale on the surface, which can affect the magnetism of MnBi₂Te₄.

Intrinsic magnetic topological insulator phases in the Sb doped MnBi2Te4 bulks and thin flakes

Magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) offer a combination of topologically nontrivial characteristics and magnetic order and show promise in terms of potentially interesting physical phenomena such as the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect and topological axion insulating states. However, the understanding of their properties and potential applications have been limited due to a lack of suitable candidates for MTIs. Here, we grow two-dimensional single crystals of Mn(SbxBi(1-x))2Te4 bulk and exfoliate them into thin flakes in order to search for intrinsic MTIs. We perform angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, low-temperature transport measurements, and first-principles calculations to investigate the band structure, transport properties, and magnetism of this family of materials, as well as the evolution of their topological properties. We find that there exists an optimized MTI zone in the Mn(SbxBi(1-x))2Te4 phase diagram, which could possibly host a high-temperature QAH phase, offering a promising avenue for new device applications.

Synthesis and anti-tumor activity of imidazopyrazines as TAK1 inhibitors

Transforming growth factor-β activated kinase-1 (TAK1) is a potential therapeutic target for cancers and inflammatory diseases. We synthesized a series of novel imidazopyrazine derivatives, which were found to exhibit potent inhibitory effect against TAK1. Compound 22a, which possesses a good pharmacokinetic profile, showed excellent in vitro kinase activity and significant in vivo efficacy in mice xenografted with SW620, a KRAS-dependent colon cancer cell line.

Proximity-Induced Magnetic Order in a Transferred Topological Insulator Thin Film on a Magnetic Insulator

Breaking the time reversal symmetry (TRS) in a topological insulator (TI) by introducing a magnetic order gives rise to exotic quantum phenomena. One of the promising routes to inducing a magnetic order in a TI is utilizing magnetic proximity effect between a TI and a strong magnetic insulator (MI). In this article, we demonstrate a TI/MI heterostructure prepared through transferring a molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)-grown Bi₂Se₃ film onto a yttrium iron garnet (YIG) substrate via wet transfer. The transferred Bi₂Se₃ exhibits excellent quality over a large scale. Moreover, through wet transfer we are able to engineer the interface and perform a comparative study to probe the proximity coupling between Bi₂Se₃ and YIG under different interface conditions. A detailed investigation of both the anomalous Hall effect and quantum corrections to the conductivity in magnetotransport measurements reveals an induced magnetic order as well as TRS breaking in the transferred Bi₂Se₃ film on YIG. In contrast, a thin layer of AlO _x at the interface obstructs the proximity coupling and preserves the TRS, indicating the critical role of the interface in mediating magnetic proximity effect.

Fermi-level tuning of the Dirac surface state in (Bi1-x Sb x )2Se3 thin films

We report on the electronic states and the transport properties of three-dimensional topological insulator (Bi_1-x Sb _x )₂Se₃ ternary alloy thin films grown on an isostructural Bi₂Se₃ buffer layer on InP substrates. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we clearly detected Dirac surface states with a large bulk band gap of 0.2-0.3 eV in the (Bi_1-x Sb _x )₂Se₃ film with x  =  0.70. In addition, we observed by Hall effect measurements that the dominant charge carrier converts from electron (n-type) to hole (p-type) at around x  =  0.7, indicating that the Fermi level can be controlled across the Dirac point. Indeed, the carrier transport was shown to be governed by Dirac surface state in 0.63  ⩽  x  ⩽  0.75. These features suggest that Fermi-level tunable (Bi_1-x Sb _x )₂Se₃-based heterostructures provide a platform for extracting exotic topological phenomena.

Part-per-million quantization and current-induced breakdown of the quantum anomalous Hall effect

In the quantum anomalous Hall effect, quantized Hall resistance and vanishing longitudinal resistivity are predicted to result from the presence of dissipationless, chiral edge states and an insulating two-dimensional bulk, without requiring an external magnetic field. Here, we explore the potential of this effect in magnetic topological insulator thin films for metrological applications. Using a cryogenic current comparator system, we measure quantization of the Hall resistance to within one part per million and, at lower current bias, longitudinal resistivity under 10 mΩ at zero magnetic field. Increasing the current density past a critical value leads to a breakdown of the quantized, low-dissipation state, which we attribute to electron heating in bulk current flow. We further investigate the prebreakdown regime by measuring transport dependence on temperature, current, and geometry, and find evidence for bulk dissipation, including thermal activation and possible variable-range hopping.

Enhancing the Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect by Magnetic Codoping in a Topological Insulator

The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, which has been realized in magnetic topological insulators (TIs), is the key to applications of dissipationless quantum Hall edge states in electronic devices. However, investigations and utilizations of the QAH effect are limited by the ultralow temperatures needed to reach full quantization-usually below 100 mK in either Cr- or V-doped (Bi,Sb)₂ Te₃ of the two experimentally confirmed QAH materials. Here it is shown that by codoping Cr and V magnetic elements in (Bi,Sb)₂ Te₃ TI, the temperature of the QAH effect can be significantly increased such that full quantization is achieved at 300 mK, and zero-field Hall resistance of 0.97 h/e² is observed at 1.5 K. A systematic transport study of the codoped (Bi,Sb)₂ Te₃ films with varied Cr/V ratios reveals that magnetic codoping improves the homogeneity of ferromagnetism and modulates the surface band structure. This work demonstrates magnetic codoping to be an effective strategy for achieving high-temperature QAH effect in TIs.

Zero-field edge plasmons in a magnetic topological insulator

Incorporating ferromagnetic dopants into three-dimensional topological insulator thin films has recently led to the realisation of the quantum anomalous Hall effect. These materials are of great interest since they may support electrical currents that flow without resistance, even at zero magnetic field. To date, the quantum anomalous Hall effect has been investigated using low-frequency transport measurements. However, transport results can be difficult to interpret due to the presence of parallel conductive paths, or because additional non-chiral edge channels may exist. Here we move beyond transport measurements by probing the microwave response of a magnetised disk of Cr-(Bi,Sb)₂Te₃. We identify features associated with chiral edge plasmons, a signature that robust edge channels are intrinsic to this material system. Our results provide a measure of the velocity of edge excitations without contacting the sample, and pave the way for an on-chip circuit element of practical importance: the zero-field microwave circulator.

Direct measurement of edge transport in the quantum anomalous Hall effect can be made difficult due to the presence of parallel conductive paths. Here, Mahoney et al. report features associated with chiral edge plasmons, a signature of robust edge states, by probing the zero-field microwave response of a magnetised disk of Cr-(Bi,Sb)₂Te₃.

Chiral Spin Mode on the Surface of a Topological Insulator

Using polarization-resolved resonant Raman spectroscopy, we explore collective spin excitations of the chiral surface states in a three dimensional topological insulator, Bi_{2}Se_{3}. We observe a sharp peak at 150 meV in the pseudovector A_{2} symmetry channel of the Raman spectra. By comparing the data with calculations, we identify this peak as the transverse collective spin mode of surface Dirac fermions. This mode, unlike a Dirac plasmon or a surface plasmon in the charge sector of excitations, is analogous to a spin wave in a partially polarized Fermi liquid, with spin-orbit coupling playing the role of an effective magnetic field.

Current-Driven Instability of the Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in Ferromagnetic Topological Insulators

The instability of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect has been studied as a function of the electric current and temperature in ferromagnetic topological insulator thin films. We find that a characteristic current for the breakdown of the QAH effect is roughly proportional to the Hall-bar width, indicating that the Hall electric field is relevant to the breakdown. We also find that electron transport is dominated by variable range hopping (VRH) at low temperatures. Combining the current and temperature dependences of the conductivity in the VRH regime, the localization length of the QAH state is evaluated to be about 5  μm. The long localization length suggests a marginally insulating nature of the QAH state due to a large number of in-gap states.
