Flexible Metal-Organic Frameworks for Light-Switchable CO2 Sorption Using an Auxiliary Ligand Strategy

We report the synthesis and characterization of two photoactive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), TCM-14 and TCM-15. The compounds were synthesized by incorporating 4,4'-azopyridine auxiliary ligands into pto-type scaffolds that are composed of dinuclear copper(II) "paddle-wheel"-based secondary building units and flexible, acetylene-extended, tritopic benzoate linkers. Room temperature CO₂ sorption of the MOFs was studied, and UV-light irradiation is shown to result in reduced CO₂ adsorption under static conditions. TCM-15 reveals a dynamic response leading to an instant desorption of up to 20% of CO₂ upon incidence of UV light because of the occurrence of nonperiodic structural changes. Physicochemical and computational density functional theory studies were carried out to gain insight into the mechanism of the interaction of light with the frameworks.

Phosphatase-mimicking activity of a unique penta-nuclear zinc(ii) complex with a reduced Schiff base ligand: assessment of its ability to sense nitroaromatics

A penta-nuclear zinc(ii) complex has been synthesized and characterized. The complex has shown good phosphatase-mimicking activity, which has been evaluated spectrophotometrically. The complex also behaves as a sensor for the detection of nitroaromatics via turn-off fluorescence response.

Construction of bifunctional 2-fold interpenetrated Zn(ii) MOFs exhibiting selective CO2 adsorption and aqueous-phase sensing of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol

Design of Zn(ii) MOFs, [{Zn(BINDI)_0.5(bpa)_0.5(H₂O)}·4H₂O]_n (MOF1) and [{Zn(BINDI)_0.5(bpe)}·3H₂O]_n (MOF2) for selective CO₂ storage and aqueous-phase detection of TNP is demonstrated.

Observation of Olefin/Paraffin Selectivity in Azo Compound and Its Application into a Metal-Organic Framework

Olefin/paraffin separation is an important and challenging issue because the two molecules have similar physicochemical properties. Although a couple of olefin adsorbents have been developed by introducing inorganic nanoparticles into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), there has been no study on the development of an olefin adsorbent by introducing a certain organic functional group into a MOF. In this study, we posited that azo compounds could offer olefin/paraffin selectivity. We have revealed using first-principles calculations that the simplest aromatic azo compound (azobenzene, Azob) has an unusual propylene/propane selectivity due to special electrostatic interactions between Azob and propylene molecules. On the basis of this interesting discovery, we have synthesized a novel propylene adsorbent, MIL-101(Cr)_DAA, by grafting 4,4'-diaminoazobenzene (DAA) into open metal sites in a mesoporous MIL-101(Cr). Remarkably, MIL-101(Cr)_DAA exhibited enhanced propylene/propane selectivity as well as considerably higher propylene heat of adsorption compared to pristine MIL-101(Cr) while maintaining the high working capacity of MIL-101(Cr). This clearly indicates that azo compounds when introduced into MOFs can provide propylene selectivity. Moreover, MIL-101(Cr)_DAA showed good C₃H₆/C₃H₈ separation and easy regeneration performances from packed-bed breakthrough experiments and retained its propylene adsorption capacity even after exposure to air for 12 h. As far as we know, this is the first study that improves the olefin selectivity of MOF by postsynthetically introducing an organic functional group.

Matrimid-JUC-62 and Matrimid-PCN-250 mixed matrix membranes displaying light-responsive gas separation and beneficial ageing characteristics for CO2/N2 separation

The performance of two generation-3 light-responsive metal-organic framework (MOF), namely JUC-62 and PCN-250, was investigated in a mixed matrix membrane (MMM) form. Both of them were incorporated inside the matrimid as the polymer matrix. Using our custom-designed membrane testing cell, it was observed that the MMMs showed up to 9% difference in CO₂ permeability between its pristine and UV-irradiated condition. This shows that the light-responsive ability of the light-responsive MOFs could still be maintained. Thus, this finding is applicable in designing a smart material. Apart from that, the MMMs also has the potential to be applied for post-combustion carbon capture. At loadings up to 15 wt%, both CO₂ permeability and CO₂/N₂ ideal selectivity could be significantly improved and surpassed the value exhibited by most of the MOF-matrimid MMM. Lastly the long term performance of the MMM was also evaluated and it was observed that both MMM could maintain their performance up to 1 month with only a slight decrease in CO₂ permeability observed for 10 wt% PCN-250-matrimid. This study then opens up the possibility to fabricate a novel anti-aging multifunctional membrane material that is applicable as a smart material and also in post combustion carbon capture applications.

Explosives in the Cage: Metal-Organic Frameworks for High-Energy Materials Sensing and Desensitization

An overview of the current status of coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) pertaining to the field of energetic materials is provided. The explosive applications of MOFs are discussed from two aspects: one for detection of explosives, and the other for explosive desensitization. By virtue of their adjustable pore/cage sizes, high surface area, tunable functional sites, and rich host-guest chemistry, MOFs have emerged as promising candidates for both explosive sensing and desensitization. The challenges and perspectives in these two areas are thoroughly discussed, and the processing methods for practical applications are also discussed briefly.

Designed synthesis of a "One for Two" hydrophilic magnetic amino-functionalized metal-organic framework for highly efficient enrichment of glycopeptides and phosphopeptides

Highly efficient enrichment of glycopeptides or phosphopeptides from complex biological samples is indispensable for high-throughput mass spectrometry analysis. In this study, for the first time, a "one for two" hydrophilic magnetic amino-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) was designed and synthesized for selective enrichment of both glycopeptides and phosphopeptides. A well-known solvo-thermal reaction was adopted to prepare a magnetic core Fe₃O₄, followed by self- polymerization of dopamine, creating a polydopamine (PDA) onto Fe₃O₄. Thanks to the hydroxyl and amino group of PDA, Zr³⁺ was easily adhered to the surface, inducing the following one-pot MOF reaction with amino ligand. After characterization of the as-prepared MOFs (denoted as Fe₃O₄@PDA@UiO-66-NH₂), its ultrahigh surface area, excellent hydrophilicity and strong magnetic responsiveness were highly confirmed. Based on hydrophilic interaction, it was applied to glycopeptide enrichment, while based on strong binding between Zr and phosphopeptides, it was applied to phosphopeptide enrichment, both exhibiting excellent performance in standard proteins and human serum with high sensitivity and selectivity. These results showed the as-prepared MOFs had great potential in proteomics research.
