Organohypervalent heterocycles

This review summarizes the structural and synthetic aspects of heterocyclic molecules incorporating an atom of a hypervalent main-group element. The term "hypervalent" has been suggested for derivatives of main-group elements with more than eight valence electrons, and the concept of hypervalency is commonly used despite some criticism from theoretical chemists. The significantly higher thermal stability of hypervalent heterocycles compared to their acyclic analogs adds special features to their chemistry, particularly for bromine and iodine. Heterocyclic compounds of elements with double bonds are not categorized as hypervalent molecules owing to the zwitterionic nature of these bonds, resulting in the conventional 8-electron species. This review is focused on hypervalent heterocyclic derivatives of nonmetal main-group elements, such as boron, silicon, nitrogen, carbon, phosphorus, sulfur, selenium, bromine, chlorine, iodine(III) and iodine(V).

Novel Antineoplastic Inducers of Mitochondrial Apoptosis in Human Cancer Cells

I propose a new strategy to suppress human cancer completely with two entirely new drug compounds exploiting cancer's Warburg effect characterized by a defective mitochondrial aerobic respiration, substituted by cytosolic aerobic fermentation/glycolysis of D-(+)-glucose into L-(+)-lactic acid. The two essentially new drugs, compound 1 [P(op)T(est)162] and compound 3 (PT167), represent new highly symmetric, four-bladed propeller-shaped polyammonium cations. The in vitro antineoplastic highly efficacious drug compound 3 represents a covalent combination of compound 1 and compound 2 (PT166). The intermediate drug compound 2 is an entirely new colchic(in)oid derivative synthesized from colchicine. Compound 2's structure was determined using X-ray crystallography. Compound 1 and compound 3 were active in vitro versus 60 human cancer cell lines of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Developmental Therapeutics Program (DTP) 60-cancer cell testing. Compound 1 and compound 3 not only stop the growth of cancer cells to ±0% (cancerostatic effect) but completely kill nearly all 60 cancer cells to a level of almost -100% (tumoricidal effect). Compound 1 and compound 3 induce mitochondrial apoptosis (under cytochrome c release) in all cancer cells tested by (re)activating (in most cancers impaired) p53 function, which results in a decrease in cancer's dysregulated cyclin D1 and an induction of the cell cycle-halting cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21Waf1/p21Cip1.

Free and Complexed Fluoropentazoles: Anomalous Ring Charge and Appreciable Kinetic Stability

Fluoronitrogens are strongly related to high-energy density materials. Fluoropentazole (cyclo-FN₅) with hitherto the highest N/F ratio at ambient pressure belongs to the family of well-known and 119-year-old pentazoles. Due to the presence of the overwhelmingly electronegative F element, cyclo-FN₅ is the only pentazole to date that contains a cationic N₅ ring. However, also due to F's large electronegativity, the reported ring-destruction barrier of cyclo-FN₅ is nearly the lowest (6.7 kcal/mol), which has made its synthesis and characterization quite difficult. Here, cyclo-FN₅ was re-predicted to bear an almost doubled ring-destruction barrier (∼12-14 kcal/mol) at the CBS-QB3, G4, W1BD, CCSD(T)/CBS//CCSD/cc-pVTZ, and CCSD(T)/CBS//CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ levels. Promisingly, upon further complexation with Lewis acid(s), the ring-destruction barrier of cyclo-FN₅ might reach 23 kcal/mol, which is comparable to that of the well-known and already synthesized arylpentazoles (∼20 kcal/mol), and the positive charge on the N₅ ring can be increased to 0.66 |e|.

Polymerization of Nitrogen in Nitrogen-Fluorine Compounds under Pressure

A wide range of polynitrogen species have attracted much attention because of their potential applications as high-energy-density materials. Until now, predicted polynitrogen was found to be negatively charged, with charge transfer from introduced atoms to nitrogen in nitrogen-bearing compounds. Using an evolutionary algorithm combined with first-principles calculations, stoichiometries and structures in nitrogen-fluorine compounds at pressures ranging from 0 to 200 GPa are investigated. In addition to two fluorine-rich compounds NF3 and NF5, two other compounds, NF and N6F, emerge with increasing pressure. N6F, as a nitrogen-rich compound, will become stable at pressures greater than 180 GPa with a positively charged nitrogen network. Above 120 GPa, the NF compound with polymeric zigzag nitrogen chains is discovered, and it is quenchable to the ambient conditions, acquiring the highest energy density of 5.38 kJ/g among reported binary covalent nitrogen compounds. These newly predicted N-F compounds are useful in understanding the chemistry of polynitrogen.

Fluorides of Silver Under Large Compression*

The silver-fluorine phase diagram has been scrutinized as a function of external pressure using theoretical methods. Our results indicate that two novel stoichiometries containing Ag⁺ and Ag²⁺ cations (Ag₃ F₄ and Ag₂ F₃ ) are thermodynamically stable at ambient and low pressure. Both are computed to be magnetic semiconductors under ambient pressure conditions. For Ag₂ F₅ , containing both Ag²⁺ and Ag³⁺ , we find that strong 1D antiferromagnetic coupling is retained throughout the pressure-induced phase transition sequence up to 65 GPa. Our calculations show that throughout the entire pressure range of their stability the mixed-valence fluorides preserve a finite band gap at the Fermi level. We also confirm the possibility of synthesizing AgF₄ as a paramagnetic compound at high pressure. Our results indicate that this compound is metallic in its thermodynamic stability region. Finally, we present general considerations on the thermodynamic stability of mixed-valence compounds of silver at high pressure.

Unexpected persistence of cis-bridged chains in compressed AuF3

Raman scattering measurements indicate that cis-bridged chains are retained in AuF3 even at a compression of 45 GPa - in contrast to meta-GGA calculations suggesting that structures with such motifs are thermodynamically unstable above 4 GPa. This metastability implies that novel gold fluorides (e.g. AuF2) might be attainable at lower pressures than previously proposed.

Synthesis and properties of hypervalent electron-rich pentacoordinate nitrogen compounds

Isolation and structural characterization of hypervalent electron-rich pentacoordinate nitrogen species have not been achieved despite continuous attempts for over a century. Herein we report the first synthesis and isolation of air stable hypervalent electron-rich pentacoordinate nitrogen cationic radical (11-N-5) species from oxidation of their corresponding neutral (12-N-5) species. In the cationic radical species, the nitrogen centers adopt a trigonal bipyramidal geometry featuring a 3-center-5-electron hypervalent attractive interaction. The combination of single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and computational studies revealed weak N-O interactions between the central nitrogen cation and oxygen atoms. This successful design strategy and isolation of air-stable pentacoordinate hypervalent nitrogen species allow further investigations on reactivity and properties resulting from these unusually weakly coordinating interactions in nitrogen compounds.
