Optimal generation of spatially coherent soft X-ray isolated attosecond pulses in a gas-filled waveguide using two-color synthesized laser pulses

Enhancement of harmonic generation by an intense driving laser with high-order waveguide modes in a high-pressure gas-filled hollow waveguide

High-order harmonics have been widely used as reliable tabletop coherent radiation sources recently, but their applications have often been limited by the available pulse energy. Here, we report that by using an overdriven intense laser in a long waveguide with high-pressure gas, phase matching can be achieved in three distinct "regimes". In the third regime, favorable phase matching is achieved at near-axis positions to enhance harmonic yields. Our results are supported by a full theoretical analysis, and we demonstrate that coupling of the driving laser with the high-order waveguide modes (instead of the fundamental mode used in most prior experiments) is responsible for achieving phase matching. Furthermore, we establish that this phase matching (and harmonic enhancement) is robust, and a scaling relation is derived for the necessary waveguide and gas parameters, allowing our predictions to be tested immediately in any laboratory today.

Oxygen-Selective Diffusion-Bubbling Membranes with Core-Shell Structure: Bubble Dynamics and Unsteady Effects

Oxygen is the second-largest-volume industrial gas that is mainly produced using cryogenic air separation. However, the state-of-the-art cryogenic technology thermodynamic efficiency has approached a theoretical limit as near as is practicable. Therefore, there is stimulus to develop an alternative technology for efficient oxygen separation from air. Mixed ionic electronic-conducting (MIEC) ceramic membrane-based oxygen separation technology could become this alternative, but commercialization aspects, including cost, have revealed inadequacies in ceramic membrane materials. Currently, diffusion-bubbling molten oxide membrane-based oxygen separation technology is being developed. It is a potentially disruptive technology that would propose an improvement in oxygen purity and a reduction in capital costs. Bubbles play an important role in ensuring the oxygen mass transfer in diffusion-bubbling membranes. However, there is not sufficient understanding of the bubble dynamics. This understanding is important to be able to control transport properties of these membranes and assess their potential for technological application. The aim of this feature article is to highlight the progress made in developing this understanding and specify the directions for future research.

Enhanced high-harmonic generation up to the soft X-ray region driven by mid-infrared pulses mixed with their third harmonic

We systematically study the efficiency enhancement of high-harmonic generation (HHG) in an Ar gas cell up to the soft X-ray (SXR) range using a two-color laser field composed of 2.1 μm (ω) and 700 nm (3ω) with parallel linear polarization. Our experiment follows the recent theoretical investigations that determined two-color mid-infrared (IR) pulses, mixed with their third harmonic (ω + 3ω), to be close to optimal driving waveforms for enhancing HHG efficiency in the SXR region [Jin et al., Nature Comm. 5, 4003 (2014)]. We observed sub-optical-cycle-dependent efficiency enhancements of up to 8.2 of photon flux integrated between 20 - 70 eV, and up to 2.2 between 85 - 205 eV. Enhancement of HHG efficiency was most pronounced for the lowest tested backing pressure (≈ 140 mbar), and decreased monotonically as the pressure was increased. The single-color (ω)-driven HHG was optimal at the highest backing pressure tested in the experiment (≈ 375 mbar). Our numerical simulations based on single-atom response and 3D pulse propagation show good qualitative agreement with experimental observations. The lower enhancement at high pressure and higher photon energy indicates that phase matching of two-color-driven HHG is more sensitive to ionization rate and pulse propagation effects than the single-color case. We show that with further improvements to the relative phase jitter and the spatio-temporal overlap of the two beams, the efficiency enhancement could be further improved by at least a factor of ≈ 2.
