Laser-guided energetic discharges over large air gaps by electric-field enhanced plasma filaments

Laguerre-Gaussian laser filamentation for the control of electric discharges in air

We study the use of Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) femtosecond laser filament with multi GW peak power to guide electric sparks in the atmosphere. We demonstrate that an LG beam with a vortex phase or with 6 azimuthal phase steps generates a filamentation regime, where a longer and more uniform energy deposition is produced compared to a normal beam with a flat phase. Such filaments can guide electric discharges over much longer distances. This technique could significantly extend the guiding range of laser filaments for lightning control and other long-range atmospheric experiments involving filamentation.

Picosecond laser filament-guided electrical discharges in air at 1 kHz repetition rate

Laser-induced filaments have been shown to reduce the voltage necessary to initiate electrical discharges in atmospheric air and guide their propagation over long distances. Here we demonstrate the stable generation of laser filament-guided electrical discharge columns in air initiated by high energy (up to 250 mJ) 1030 nm wavelength laser pulses of 7 ps duration at repetition rates up to 1 kHz and we discuss the processes leading to breakdown. A current proportional to the laser pulse energy is observed to arise as soon as the laser pulse arrives, initiating a high impedance phase of the discharge. Full breakdown, characterized by impedance collapse, occurs 100 ns to several µs later. A record 4.7-fold reduction in breakdown voltage for dc-biased discharges, which remains practically independent of the repetition rate up to 1 kHz, is observed to be primarily caused by a single laser pulse that produces a large (∼80%) density depression. The radial gaps between the filamentary plasma channel and the hollowed electrodes employed are shown to play a significant role in the breakdown dynamics. A rapid increase of 3-4 orders of magnitude in current is observed to follow the formation of localized radial current channels linking the filament to the electrodes. The increased understanding and control of kHz repetition rate filament-guided discharges can aid their use in applications.

Dynamics of the femtosecond laser-triggered spark gap

We present space and time resolved measurements of the air hydrodynamics induced by femtosecond laser pulse excitation of the air gap between two electrodes at high potential difference. We explore both plasma-based and plasma-free gap excitation. The former uses the plasma left in the wake of femtosecond filamentation, while the latter exploits air heating by multiple-pulse resonant excitation of quantum molecular wavepackets. We find that the cumulative electrode-driven air density depression channel plays the dominant role in the gap evolution leading to breakdown. Femtosecond laser heating serves mainly to initiate the depression channel; the presence of filament plasma only augments the early heating.

Full path single-shot imaging of femtosecond pulse collapse in air turbulence

In a single shot, we measure the full propagation path, including the evolution to pulse collapse, of a high power femtosecond laser pulse propagating in air. Our technique enables examination of the effect of parameters that fluctuate on a shot-to-shot basis, such as pulse energy, pulse duration, and air turbulence-induced refractive index perturbations. We find that even in lab air over relatively short propagation distances, turbulence plays a significant role in determining the location of pulse collapse.

Towards Remote Lightning Manipulation by Meters-long Plasma Channels Generated by Ultra-Short-Pulse High-Intensity Lasers

Remote manipulation (triggering and guiding) of lightning in atmospheric conditions of thunderstorms has been the subject of intense scientific research for decades. High power, ultrashort-pulse lasers are considered attractive in generating plasma channels in air that could serve as conductors/diverters for lightning. However, two fundamental obstacles, namely the limited length and lifetime of such plasma channels prevented their realization to this date. In this paper, we report decisive experimental results of our multi-element broken wire concept that extends the generated plasma channels to the required tens of meters range. We obtain 13-meter-long plasma wire, limited only by our current experimental setup, with plasma conditions that could be sufficient for the leader initiation. This advance, coupled with our demonstrated method of laser heating for long time sustenance of the plasma channel, is a major, significant step towards controlling lightning.

Note: Investigation of a Marx generator imitating a Tesla transformer

A compact Marx generator was built to mimic a spark-gap Tesla transformer. The generator produced radio-frequency pulses of up to ±200 kV and ±15 A with a frequency between 110 and 280 kHz at a repetition rate of 120 Hz. The generator tolerated larger circuit-parameter perturbations than is expected for conventional Tesla transformers. Possible applications include research on the control and laser guiding of spark discharges.

Short-pulse lasers for weather control

Filamentation of ultra-short TW-class lasers recently opened new perspectives in atmospheric research. Laser filaments are self-sustained light structures of 0.1-1 mm in diameter, spanning over hundreds of meters in length, and producing a low density plasma (10¹⁵-10¹⁷ cm^-3) along their path. They stem from the dynamic balance between Kerr self-focusing and defocusing by the self-generated plasma and/or non-linear polarization saturation. While non-linearly propagating in air, these filamentary structures produce a coherent supercontinuum (from 230 nm to 4 µm, for a 800 nm laser wavelength) by self-phase modulation (SPM), which can be used for remote 3D-monitoring of atmospheric components by Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging). However, due to their high intensity (10¹³-10¹⁴ W cm^-2), they also modify the chemical composition of the air via photo-ionization and photo-dissociation of the molecules and aerosols present in the laser path. These unique properties were recently exploited for investigating the capability of modulating some key atmospheric processes, like lightning from thunderclouds, water vapor condensation, fog formation and dissipation, and light scattering (albedo) from high altitude clouds for radiative forcing management. Here we review recent spectacular advances in this context, achieved both in the laboratory and in the field, reveal their underlying mechanisms, and discuss the applicability of using these new non-linear photonic catalysts for real scale weather control.

Long-lived laser-induced arc discharges for energy channeling applications

Laser filamentation offers a promising way for the remote handling of large electrical power in the form of guided arc discharges. We here report that it is possible to increase by several orders of magnitude the lifetime of straight plasma channels from filamentation-guided sparks in atmospheric air. A 30 ms lifetime can be reached using a low-intensity, 100 mA current pulse. Stability of the plasma shape is maintained over such a timescale through a continuous Joule heating from the current. This paves the way for applications based on the generation of straight, long duration plasma channels, like virtual plasma antennas or contactless transfer of electric energy.

Fifteen meter long uninterrupted filaments from sub-terawatt ultraviolet pulse in air

A technique is presented to create uninterrupted long ultraviolet filaments in air using appropriately structured transmission mesh. The mesh with different cell sizes was inserted into 10-cm parallel beam of 0.2-J, 248-nm, and 870-fs pulse propagating along ~100-m corridor. Transverse positions of multiple filaments formed by the optimum size cells were reproducible within at least 15 m along the propagation path. 3D+time simulations confirmed uninterrupted plasma channels with fixed positions in the transverse space similar to the experiment. Unoptimized cell size resulted in filaments shifting towards the cell center and destruction of uninterrupted filaments.
