Schottky barrier at graphene/metal oxide interfaces: insight from first-principles calculations

Interfacial Interaction in MeOx/MWNTs (Me-Cu, Ni) Nanostructures as Efficient Electrode Materials for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Due to their unique physical and chemical properties, complex nanostructures based on carbon nanotubes and transition metal oxides are considered promising electrode materials for the fabrication of high-performance supercapacitors with a fast charge rate, high power density, and long cycle life. The crucial role in determining their efficiency is played by the properties of the interface in such nanostructures, among them, the type of chemical bonds between their components. The complementary theoretical and experimental methods, including dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D3) within GGA-PBE approximation, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, X-ray photoelectron, and X-ray absorption spectroscopies, were applied in the present work for the comprehensive investigation of surface morphology, structure, and electronic properties in CuOx/MWCNTs and NiOx/MWCNTs. As a result, the type of interfacial interaction and its correlation with electrochemical characteristics were determined. It was found that the presence of both Ni-O-C and Ni-C bonds can increase the contact between NiO and MWCNTs, and, through this, promote electron transfer between NiO and MWCNTs. For NiOx/MWCNTs, better electrochemical characteristics were observed than for CuOx/MWCNTs, in which the interfacial interaction is determined only by bonding through Cu-O-C bonds. The electrochemical properties of CuOx/MWCNTs and NiOx/MWCNTs were studied to demonstrate the effect of interfacial interaction on their efficiency as electrode materials for supercapacitor applications.

The interfacial properties of 2D metal-monolayer blue phosphorene heterojunctions and transport properties of their field-effect transistors

Monolayer blue phosphorene (BlueP) has attracted much interest as a potential channel material in electronic devices. Searching for suitable two-dimensional (2D) metal materials to use as electrodes is critical to fabricating high-performance nanoscale channel BlueP-based field effect transistors (FETs). In this paper, we adopted first-principles calculations to explore binding energies, phonon calculations and electronic structures of 2D metal-BlueP heterojunctions, including Ti3C2-, NbTe2-, Ga(110)- and NbS2-BlueP, and thermal stability of Ti3C2-BlueP heterojunction at room temperature. We also used density functional theory coupled with the nonequilibrium Green function method to investigate the transport properties of sub-5 nm BlueP-based FETs with Ti3C2-BlueP electrodes. Our calculated results indicate that Ti3C2-BlueP has excellent thermal stability and may be used as a candidate electrode material for BlueP-based FETs. The double-gate can more effectively improve the device performance compared with the single-gate. The estimated source leakage current of sub-5 nm transistors reaches up to 369µA µm-1, which is expected to meet the requirements of the international technology roadmap for semiconductors for LP (low-power) devices. Our results imply that 2D Ti3C2may act as an appropriate electrode material for LP BlueP-based FETs, thus providing guidance for the design of future short-gate-length BlueP-based FETs.

Ligand-Engineered Quantum Dots Decorated Heterojunction Photoelectrodes for Self-Biased Solar Water Splitting

A cost-effective and high-efficiency photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting system based on colloidal quantum dots (QDs) represents a potential solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion technology to achieve future carbon neutrality. Herein, a self-biased PEC cell consisting of BiVO₄ photoanode and Cu₂ O photocathode both decorated with Zn-doped CuInS₂ (ZCIS) QDs is successfully fabricated. The intrinsic charge dynamics of the photoelectrodes are efficiently optimized via rational engineering of the surface ligands capped on QDs with controllable chain lengths and binding affinities to the metal oxide electrodes. It is demonstrated that the short-chain monodentate 1-dodecanethiol ligands are beneficial to ZCIS QDs for suppressing charge recombination, which enables the construction of tight heterojunction with coupled metal oxide electrodes, leading to effective photo-induced charge transfer/injection for enhanced PEC performance. The QD decorated BiVO₄ and Cu₂ O photoelectrodes in pairs demonstrate a self-biased PEC water splitting process, delivering an STH efficiency of 0.65% with excellent stability under AM 1.5 G one-sun illumination. The results highlight the significance of synergistic ligand and heterojunction engineering to build highly efficient and robust QDs-based PEC devices for self-biased solar water splitting.

Diffusivity and band offset analysis of a graphene interlayer at the back contact of a copper zinc tin sulphide solar cell

Cu₂ZnSnS₄ (CZTS) is a promising 3rd generation solar cell absorber based on earth-abundant and nontoxic elements. However, the formation of detrimental MoS₂ in the Mo/CZTS back contact interface hinders the overall performance due to poor band alignment in the back contact and a degraded interface. We propose that graphene can be a suitable candidate for the protective interlayer at the back contact to prevent the formation of amorphous MoS₂ by blocking S diffusion. Using first principles calculations, we investigated the kinetics processes of S atom diffusion on and across the graphene plane with various defects considered. It was found that while an S atom can easily diffuse on graphene with a diffusion barrier of 0.355 eV, it is hard to diffuse across the graphene plane with or without defects, with diffusion barriers ranging from 1.19 eV through a double vacancy to 8.66 eV across pristine graphene. In addition, a band offset calculation using a local potential alignment method was performed to understand the role of graphene in hole transport. We discover that the interpolation of Hartree potential data can largely improve the stability of the band offset algorithm, comparable to a core level alignment method. The band offset calculation results show that the Fermi level of graphene is 0.664 eV higher than the valence band maximum of CZTS. Therefore, graphene is a benign interlayer in the back contact that can facilitate hole collection. Our calculations suggest that graphene is a promising protective interlayer.

Interaction-Dependent Interfacial Charge-Transfer Behavior in Solar Water-Splitting Systems

Dual-band-gap systems are promising for solar water splitting due to their excellent light-harvesting capability and high charge-separation efficiency. However, a fundamental understanding of interfacial charge-transfer behavior in the dual-band-gap configuration is still incomplete. Taking CdS/reduced graphene oxide (CdS/RGO) nanoheterojunctions as a model solar water splitting system, we attempt here to highlight the interaction-dependent interfacial charge-transfer behavior based on both experimental observations and theoretical calculations. Experimental evidence points to charge transfer at the CdS-RGO interface playing a dominant role in the photocatalytic hydrogen production activity. By tuning the degree of reduction of RGO, the interfacial interaction, and, thereby, the charge transfer can be controlled at the CdS-RGO interface. This observation is supported by theoretical analysis, where we find that the interfacial charge transfer is a balance between the effective single-electron- and hole-transfer probability and the surface free electron and hole concentration, both of which are related to the surface potential and tailored by interfacial interaction. This mechanism is applicable to all systems for solar water splitting, providing a useful guidance for the design and study of heterointerfaces for high-efficiency energy conversion.
