Surface Structuring with Polarization-Singular Femtosecond Laser Beams Generated by a q-plate

Laser-Based Selective Material Processing for Next-Generation Additive Manufacturing

The connection between laser-based material processing and additive manufacturing is quite deeply rooted. In fact, the spark that started the field of additive manufacturing is the idea that two intersecting laser beams can selectively solidify a vat of resin. Ever since, laser has been accompanying the field of additive manufacturing, with its repertoire expanded from processing only photopolymer resin to virtually any material, allowing liberating customizability. As a result, additive manufacturing is expected to take an even more prominent role in the global supply chain in years to come. Herein, an overview of laser-based selective material processing is presented from various aspects: the physics of laser-material interactions, the materials currently used in additive manufacturing processes, the system configurations that enable laser-based additive manufacturing, and various functional applications of next-generation additive manufacturing. Additionally, current challenges and prospects of laser-based additive manufacturing are discussed.

Polarization evolution on higher and hybrid-order Poincaré spheres with coaxial polarization holograms

Based on the tensor polarization holography theory, we propose a simple and convenient method in the recording material, phenanthrenequinone-doped polymethylmethacrylate, to generate beams on higher and hybrid-order Poincaré spheres, and realize their polarization evolution on the spheres by combining the recorded phase with the Pancharatnam-Berry phase. By simultaneously adjusting the polarization azimuth angle and relative phase of the recorded waves, independent phase-shifts can be imparted onto two orthogonal circular polarization states in reconstruction process of polarization holography. The beams on basic Poincaré sphere are transformed into that on arbitrary higher or hybrid-order Poincaré spheres. We get the Poincaré spheres' type and polarization distribution of the reconstructed wave by interferometry and polarizer, and the results match well with the theoretical predictions.

2 µm cylindrical vector beam generation from a c-cut Tm:CaYAlO4 crystal resonator

Different from the traditional ideal column symmetry cavities, we directly generated the cylindrical vector pulsed beams in the folded six-mirror cavity by employing a c-cut Tm:CaYAlO₄ (Tm:CYA) crystal and SESAM. By adjusting the distance between the curved cavity mirror (M4) and the SESAM, both the radially polarized beam and azimuthally polarized beam are generated around 1962 nm and the two vectorial modes can be freely switched in the resonator. Further increased the pump power to 7 W, the stable radially polarized Q-switched mode-locked (QML) cylindrical vector beams were also obtained with an output power of 55 mW, the sub-pulse repetition rate of 120.42 MHz, pulse duration of ∼0.5 ns and the beam quality factor M² of ∼2.9. To our knowledge, this is the first report of radially and azimuthally polarized beams in the 2 µm wavelength solid-state resonator.

Study on the Origin and Evolution of Femtosecond Laser-Induced Surface Structures: LIPSS, Quasi-Periodic Grooves, and Aperiodic Micro-Ridges

We investigate the evolution mechanisms of the laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) and quasi-periodic grooves that are formed on the surface of monocrystalline silicon (mono-Si) when exposed to femtosecond laser radiation of different pulse duration, state of polarization, and fluence. The conditions required for producing LIPSS-free complex micro-ridge patterns are elaborated. The LIPSS evolution mechanism is explained in terms of scattering/interference-based phenomena. To establish the basis for our interpretation, single femtosecond pulses of different pulse durations are irradiated on mono-Si. The absence/appearance of LIPSS rudiments is explained in the context of spectral bandwidth and the associated effects on the intensity of the central wavelength. Shorter fs pulses of a wider bandwidth are employed to induce LIPSS-free micro-ridge patterns. It is demonstrated that the resultant micro-ridge patterns depend on the laser fluence distribution and can be manipulated through laser polarization. The curved morphology of LIPSS rudiments and the evolution mechanism of low- and high-spatial frequency LIPSS, i.e., LSFL and HSFL, are discussed. Finally, it is demonstrated that the consolidated quasi-periodic grooves result from HSFL welding together groups of LSFL. Although our findings are based on fs laser interaction with mono-Si, the results can also be applied to many other materials.

Generation of vector beams based on diffraction characteristics of a linear polarization hologram in coaxial recording

Polarization holography is an effective tool for realizing light field manipulation and can be utilized to generate vector beams. Based on the diffraction characteristics of a linear polarization hologram in coaxial recording, an approach for generating arbitrary vector beams is proposed. Unlike the previous methods for generating vector beams, in this work, it is independent of faithful reconstruction effect and the arbitrary linear polarization waves can be used as reading waves. The desired generalized vector beam polarization patterns can be adjusted by changing the polarized direction angle of the reading wave. Therefore, it is more flexible than the previously reported methods in generating vector beams. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical prediction.

Ultralow loss hollow-core negative curvature fibers with nested elliptical antiresonance tubes

Hollow-core negative curvature fibers can confine light within air core and have small nonlinearity and dispersion and high damage threshold, thereby attracting a great deal of interest in the field of hollow core fibers. However, reducing the loss of hollow-core negative curvature fibers is a serious problem. On this basis, three new types of fibers with different nested tube structures are proposed in the near-infrared spectral regions and compared in detail with a previously proposed hollow-core negative curvature fiber. We used finite-element method for numerical simulation studies of their transmission loss, bending loss, and single-mode performance, and then the transmission performance of various structural fibers is compared. We found that the nested elliptical antiresonant fiber 1 has better transmission performance than that of the three other types of fibers in the spectral range of 0.72-1.6 µm. Results show that the confinement loss of the LP₀₁ mode is as low as 6.45×10^-6 dB/km at λ = 1.06 µm. To the best of our knowledge, the record low level of confinement loss of hollow-core antiresonant fibers with nested tube structures was created. In addition, the nested elliptical antiresonant fiber 1 has better bending resistance, and its bending loss was below 2.99×10^-2 dB/km at 5 cm bending radius.

Azimuthally polarized picosecond vector beam with 1.7 kW of average output power

We report on a thin-disk multipass amplifier delivering azimuthally polarized, 7.8 ps short, laser pulses at an average power and with pulse energies of up to 1.7 kW and 5.8 mJ, respectively. High polarization purity was achieved by compensating for the arbitrary linear phase shifts that are introduced by tilted optical elements.

Efficient and high-throughput ablation of platinum using high-repetition rate radially and azimuthally polarized sub-picosecond laser pulses

A highly productive ablation process of 100 nm thick platinum films with a processed area rate of up to 378 cm²/min is presented using radially and azimuthally polarized laser beams. This was achieved by developing a laser amplifier generating 757 fs long laser pulses at a maximum average power of 390 W and a repetition rate of 10.6 MHz with adjustable polarization states, i.e., linear, radial, and azimuthal polarization on the work piece. The pulse train emitted from the laser was synchronized to a custom-designed polygon scanner and directed into an application machine.

Generation of Supra-Wavelength Grooves in Femtosecond Laser Surface Structuring of Silicon

Extensive research work has been carried out on the generation and application of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS). LIPSS with a sub-wavelength period generated by femtosecond laser irradiation, generally indicated as ripples, have been extensively investigated. Instead, the other ordered surface structures characterized by a supra-wavelength period, indicated as grooves, have been much less studied. Grooves typically form at larger irradiance levels or for higher number of laser pulses. Here, we report a comprehensive overview of recent investigations on the supra-wavelength grooves formed on crystalline silicon irradiated by femtosecond laser pulses. The authors’ recent experimental work is mainly addressed giving an explicit picture of the grooves generation process, namely illustrating the influence of the various experimental parameters, including, e.g., polarization, wavelength, fluence and repetition rate of the laser beam as well as number of laser pulses hitting the surface of the material. The effect of irradiation of a static or moving target and of the environmental conditions (e.g., vacuum or air ambient) will also be discussed. Finally, possible mechanisms envisaged to explain grooves formation and still open issues are briefly discussed.

Sector sandwich structure: an easy-to-manufacture way towards complex vector beam generation

Complex polarization-phase transformations that are realized using easy-to-manufacture optical elements are considered. The manufacturing technology of such elements is based on the angular discretization of the required polarization and phase distributions, which allows one to make optical elements in the form of sector sandwich structures consisting of polarized and phase plates stacked together. We analyze analytically and study numerically the main types of such sector sandwich structures for the formation of cylindrical polarizations of various orders. New effects are observed, which result in the appearance of complex polarized beams with vortices of various orders, arising after the passage through polarizing plates and their combinations with differently rotated phase plates. The results of the experimental study of the formed beams using a multichannel diffraction filter are consistent with theory.

Multicolor concentric annular ultrafast vector beams

Novel multicolor concentric annular ultrafast vector beams (MUCAU-VB) are firstly generated simply by using cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) in a glass plate pumped by two intense vector femtosecond pulses. A proof-of-principle experiment shows that up to 10 frequency up-conversion concentric annular radially polarized sidebands are obtained simultaneously based on CFWM process, where the spectra range of the first 7 order sidebands extending from 545 nm to 725 nm. The results prove the polarization transfer property from the pump beam to the signal beams even in the CFWM, a third-order optical parametric process. The pulse duration of the first order sideband is measured to be 74 fs which is according with those of two input beams. These novel MUCAU-VB, which are manipulated in temporal, spectral, spatial domain and polarization state simultaneously, are expected to apply in wide fields, such as manipulating particles and multicolor pump-probe experiments.

Optical singularities and Möbius strip arrays in tailored non-paraxial light fields

A major current challenge in the field of structured light represents the development from three- (3d) to four-dimensional (4d) electric field structures, in which one exploits the transverse as well as longitudinal field components in 3d space. For this purpose, non-paraxial fields are required in order to be able to access visionary 3d topological structures as optical cones, ribbons and Möbius strips formed by 3d polarization states. We numerically demonstrate the customization of such complex topological structures by controlling generic polarization singularities in non-paraxial light fields. Our approach is based on tightly focusing tailored higher-order vector beams in combination with phase vortices. Besides demonstrating the appearance of cones and ribbons around the optical axis, we evince sculpting arrays of Möbius strips realized around off-axis generic singularities.

Mapping complex polarization states of light on a solid

Polarization states of light, represented by different points on a Poincaré sphere, can be readily analyzed for a Gaussian beam by a combination of wave plates and polarizers. However, this method cannot be extended to higher-order Poincaré spheres and complex polarization patterns produced by coherent superpositions of vector vortex (VV) beams. We demonstrate the visualization of complex polarization patterns by imprinting them onto a solid surface in the form of periodic nano-gratings oriented parallel to the local structure of the electric field of light. We design unconventional surface structures by controlling the superposition of VV beams. Our method is of potential interest to the production of sub-wavelength nano-structures.

Sculpting complex polarization singularity networks

Polarization singularities in vectorial light fields have become an important tool for different cutting-edge applications such as information processing with integer information units. However, even though vectorial singularities naturally form configurations of multiple singular points, up to now only rather simple, mostly cylindrical vector beams including single central singularities, have been considered. Here we demonstrate the customization of extended singularity networks embedded in a class of complex polarization structures based on general Ince-Gaussian modes, namely, Ince-Gaussian vector modes. Contributing to fundamental singular optics, our investigations evince the conservation of tailored singularity arrangements upon 3D propagation, whereby respective modes enlarge the range of stable vectorial fields, paving the way to information technologies with a significantly enhanced number of degrees of freedom.

Formation of hybrid higher-order cylindrical vector beams using binary multi-sector phase plates

Nowadays, the well-known cylindrical vector beams (CVBs) – the axially symmetric beam solution to the full-vector electromagnetic wave equation – are widely used for advanced laser material processing, optical manipulation and communication and have a great interest for data storage. Higher-order CVBs with polarisation order greater than one and superpositions of CVBs of various orders (hybrid CVBs) are especially of interest because of their great potential in contemporary optics. We performed a theoretical analysis of the transformation of first-order CVBs (radially and azimuthally polarised beams) into hybrid higher-order ones using phase elements with complex transmission functions in the form of the cosine or sine functions of the azimuthal angle. Binary multi-sector phase plates approximating such transmission functions were fabricated and experimentally investigated. The influence of the number of sectors and a height difference between neighbouring sectors, as well as the energy contribution of the different components in the generated hybrid higher-order CVBs were discussed in the context of polarisation transformation and vector optical field transformation in the focal region. The possibility of polarisation transformation, even in the case of weak focusing, is also demonstrated. The simple structure of the profile of such plates, their high diffraction efficiency and high damage threshold, as well as the easy-to-implement polarisation transformation principle provide advanced opportunities for high-efficient, quickly-switchable dynamic control of the generation of structured laser beams.

Surface structures with unconventional patterns and shapes generated by femtosecond structured light fields

We present an investigation on ultrashort laser surface structuring with structured light fields generated by various q-plates. In particular, q-plates with topological charges q = 1, 3/2, 2, 5/2 are used to generate femtosecond (fs) vector vortex beams, and form complex periodic surface structures through multi-pulse ablation of a solid crystalline silicon target. We show how optical retardation tuning of the q-plate offers a feasible way to vary the fluence transverse distribution of the beam, thus allowing the production of structures with peculiar shapes, which depend on the value of q. The features of the generated surface structures are compared with the vector vortex beam characteristics at the focal plane, by rationalizing their relationship with the local state of the laser light. Our experimental findings demonstrate how irradiation with fs complex light beams can offer a valuable route to design unconventional surface structures.

Entanglement beating in free space through spin-orbit coupling

It is well known that the entanglement of a quantum state is invariant under local unitary transformations. This rule dictates, for example, that the entanglement of internal degrees of freedom of a photon remains invariant during free-space propagation. Here, we outline a scenario in which this paradigm does not hold. Using local Bell states engineered from classical vector vortex beams with non-separable degrees of freedom, the so-called classically entangled states, we demonstrate that the entanglement evolves during propagation, oscillating between maximally entangled (purely vector) and product states (purely scalar). We outline the spin-orbit interaction behind these novel propagation dynamics and confirm the results experimentally, demonstrating spin-orbit coupling in paraxial beams. This demonstration highlights a hitherto unnoticed property of classical entanglement and simultaneously offers a device for the on-demand delivery of vector states to targets, for example, for dynamic laser materials processing, switchable resolution within stimulated emission depletion (STED) systems, and a tractor beam for entanglement.

Multitwist Möbius Strips and Twisted Ribbons in the Polarization of Paraxial Light Beams

The polarization of light can exhibit unusual features when singular optical beams are involved. In 3-dimensional polarized random media the polarization orientation around singularities describe 1/2 or 3/2 Möbius strips. It has been predicted that if singular beams intersect non-collinearly in free space, the polarization ellipse rotates forming many-turn Möbius strips or twisted ribbons along closed loops around a central singularity. These polarization features are important because polarization is an aspect of light that mediate strong interactions with matter, with potential for new applications. We examined the non-collinear superposition of two unfocused paraxial light beams when one of them carried an optical vortex and the other one a uniform phase front, both in orthogonal states of circular polarization. It is known that these superpositions in 2-dimensions produce space-variant patterns of polarization. Relying on the symmetry of the problem, we extracted the 3-dimensional patterns from projective measurements, and confirmed the formation of many-turn Möbius strips or twisted ribbons when the topological charge of one of the component beams was odd or even, respectively. The measurements agree well with the modelings and confirmed that these types of patterns occur at macroscopic length scales and in ordinary superposition situations.

Tailored intensity landscapes by tight focusing of singular vector beams

Vector beams are of major importance to tailor tightly focused fields by creating an additional z-polarization component. Till now, mainly focusing properties of fundamental vector beams have been investigated, whereas the knowledge of focused higher-order singular vector fields is still missing. We fill this gap by numerical analysis of these fields, applying their attractive characteristics as including a spatially adjustable amount of radial and azimuthal components. We demonstrate the realization of three-dimensional polarization structures whose total intensity resembles dark stars and bright flowers. Further, we tailor these focal intensity landscapes by modulating the order of incident vector fields. This in turn allows shaping the focus of a light field for specific applications as e.g. advanced microscopy.
