Impact of noise on the instability of spiral waves in stochastic 2D mathematical models of human atrial fibrillation

Sustained spiral waves, also known as rotors, are pivotal mechanisms in persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). Stochasticity is inevitable in nonlinear biological systems such as the heart; however, it is unclear how noise affects the instability of spiral waves in human AF. This study presents a stochastic two-dimensional mathematical model of human AF and explores how Gaussian white noise affects the instability of spiral waves. In homogeneous tissue models, Gaussian white noise may lead to spiral-wave meandering and wavefront break-up. As the noise intensity increases, the spatial dispersion of phase singularity (PS) points increases. This finding indicates the potential AF-protective effects of cardiac system stochasticity by destabilizing the rotors. By contrast, Gaussian white noise is unlikely to affect the spiral-wave instability in the presence of localized scar or fibrosis regions. The PS points are located at the boundary or inside the scar/fibrosis regions. Localized scar or fibrosis may play a pivotal role in stabilizing spiral waves regardless of the presence of noise. This study suggests that fibrosis and scars are essential for stabilizing the rotors in stochastic mathematical models of AF. Further patient-derived realistic modeling studies are required to confirm the role of scar/fibrosis in AF pathophysiology.

Noise induced suppression of spiral waves in a hybrid FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron with discontinuous resetting

A modified FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron model with sigmoid function-based recovery variable is considered with electromagnetic flux coupling. The dynamical properties of the proposed neuron model are investigated, and as the excitation current becomes larger, the number of fixed points decreases to one. The bifurcation plots are investigated to show the chaotic and periodic regimes for various values of excitation current and parameters. A N×N network of the neuron model is constructed to study the wave propagation and wave re-entry phenomena. Investigations are conducted to show that for larger flux coupling values, the spiral waves are suppressed, but for such values of the flux coupling, the individual nodes are driven into periodic regimes. By introducing Gaussian noise as an additional current term, we showed that when noise is introduced for the entire simulation time, the dynamics of the nodes are largely altered while the noise exposure for 200-time units will not alter the dynamics of the nodes completely.

Effects of network topologies on stochastic resonance in feedforward neural network

The effects of network topologies on signal propagation are studied in noisy feedforward neural network in detail, where the network topologies are modulated by changing both the in-degree and out-degree distributions of FFNs as identical, uniform and exponential respectively. Stochastic resonance appeared in three FFNs when the same external stimuli and noise are applied to the three different network topologies. It is found that optimal noise intensity decreases with the increase of network's layer index. Meanwhile, the Q index of FFN with identical distribution is higher than that of the other two FFNs, indicating that the synchronization between the neuronal firing activities and the external stimuli is more obvious in FFN with identical distribution. The optimal parameter regions for the time cycle of external stimuli and the noise intensity are found for three FFNs, in which the resonance is more easily induced when the parameters of stimuli are set in this region. Furthermore, the relationship between the in-degree, the average membrane potential and the resonance performance is studied at the neuronal level, where it is found that both the average membrane potentials and the Q indexes of neurons in FFN with identical degree distribution is more consistent with each other than that of the other two FFNs due to their network topologies. In summary, the simulations here indicate that the network topologies play essential roles in affecting the signal propagation of FFNs.

Spiral waves in externally excited neuronal network: Solvable model with a monotonically differentiable magnetic flux

Spiral waves are particular spatiotemporal patterns connected to specific phase singularities representing topological wave dislocations or nodes of zero amplitude, witnessed in a wide range of complex systems such as neuronal networks. The appearance of these waves is linked to the network structure as well as the diffusion dynamics of its blocks. We report a novel form of the Hindmarsh-Rose neuron model utilized as a square neuronal network, showing the remarkable multistructure of dynamical patterns ranging from characteristic spiral wave domains of spatiotemporal phase coherence to regions of hyperchaos. The proposed model comprises a hyperbolic memductance function as the monotone differentiable magnetic flux. Hindmarsh-Rose neurons with an external electromagnetic excitation are considered in three different cases: no excitation, periodic excitation, and quasiperiodic excitation. We performed an extensive study of the neuronal dynamics including calculation of equilibrium points, bifurcation analysis, and Lyapunov spectrum. We have found the property of antimonotonicity in bifurcation scenarios with no excitation or periodic excitation and identified wide regions of hyperchaos in the case of quasiperiodic excitation. Furthermore, the formation and elimination of the spiral waves in each case of external excitation with respect to stimuli parameters are investigated. We have identified novel forms of Hindmarsh-Rose bursting dynamics. Our findings reveal multipartite spiral wave formations and symmetry breaking spatiotemporal dynamics of the neuronal model that may find broad practical applications.

Weak periodic signal detection by sine-Wiener-noise-induced resonance in the FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron

Based on the FitzHugh-Nagumo (FHN) neuron model subjected to sine-Wiener (SW) noise, impacts of SW noise on weak periodic signal detection are investigated by calculating response measure Q for characterizing synchronization between the input signal and the output temporal activities of the neuron. It is numerically demonstrated that the response measure Q can achieve the optimal value under appropriate and moderate intensity or correlation time of SW noise, suggesting the occurrence of SW-noise-induced stochastic resonance. Furthermore, the optimal value of Q is sensitive to correlation time. Consequently, the correlation time of SW noise has a great influence on the performance of signal detection in the FHN neuron.
