Abstract
We report the Cu(II) catalyzed synthesis of β-disubstituted ketones from styrene via oxo-alkylation with unactivated cycloalkanes as the alkylating agent in presence of tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBHP) and 1-methylimidazole as oxidant and base respectively. β-disubstituted ketones are known to be synthesized by using either expensive Ru/Ir complexes, or low-cost metal complexes (e. g., Fe, Mn) with activated species like aldehyde, acid, alcohol, or phthalimide derivatives as the alkylating agent, however, use of unactivated cycloalkanes directly as the alkylating agent remains challenging. A wide range of aliphatic C-H substrates as well as various olefinic arenes and heteroarene (35 substrates including 14 new substrates) are well-tolerated in this method. Hammett analysis shed more light on the substitution effect in the olefinic part on the overall mechanism. Furthermore, the controlled experiments, kinetic isotope effect study, and theoretical calculations (DFT) enable us to gain deeper insight of mechanistic intricacies of this new simple and atom-economic methodology.

Abstract
To develop new radical synthesis strategies, a profound understanding of the electronic transfer mechanism is critical. An activation model called relayed proton-coupled electron transfer (relayed-PCET) was developed and investigated for chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed diradical reactions by density functional theory (DFT). The driving force of electron transfer from the nucleophile to the electrophile is the proton transfer that occurs via the chiral phosphoric acid (CPA) catalyst to the electrophile. Moreover, the origins of the selectivity can be explained by distortion of the catalyst, favorable hydrogen bonding, and strong interactions of the substrates with substituents of the CPAs.

Abstract
This report describes the unprecedented electrooxidation of a solvent (e.g., DMF)-ligated B2 cat2 complex, whereby a solvent-stabilized boryl radical is formed via quasi-homolytic cleavage of the B-B bond in a DMF-ligated B2 cat2 radical cation. Cyclic voltammetry and density functional theory provide evidence to support this novel B-B bond activation strategy. Furthermore, a strategy for the electrochemical gem-diborylation of gem-bromides via paired electrolysis is developed for the first time, affording a range of versatile gem-diborylalkanes, which are widely used in synthetic society. Notably, this reaction approach is scalable, transition-metal-free, and requires no external activator.

Abstract
The interaction between organic radicals and transition metals plays a crucial role in radical-mediated chemical reactions, functional devices, and biocatalysis. Characterizing such interactions, however, remains a long-standing challenge due to the inherently high reactivity of radical species. Here, using a scanning tunneling microscope breaking junction (STM-BJ) technique, we are able to detect the interaction mode between iminyl radicals and the gold surface at a single molecule level. We show that the free iminyl radicals generated through photochemical N-O bond homolysis of oxime esters react toward the gold electrode surface and produce covalent Au-N bonds. Intriguingly, we find that the Au-N bonding reactions lead to the formation of robust and highly conductive single-molecule junctions. These findings provide not only insights into the mechanism of iminyl-radical-involved reactions but also a facile photolysis method to create a new type of covalent electrode-molecule bonding contact for molecular devices.

Abstract
Oxidation-induced strategy for inert chemical bond activation through highly active radical cation intermediate has exhibited unique reactivity. Understanding the structure and reactivity patterns of radical cation intermediates is crucial in the mechanistic study and will be beneficial for developing new reactions. In this work, the structure and properties of indole radical cations have been revealed using time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy, in situ electrochemical UV-vis, and in situ electrochemical electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to explain and predict the regioselectivity of several electrochemical oxidative indole annulations. Based on the understanding of the inherent properties of several indole radical cations, two different regioselective annulations of indoles have been successfully developed under electrochemical oxidation conditions. Varieties of furo[2,3-b]indolines and furo[3,2-b]indolines were synthesized in good yields with high regioselectivities. Our mechanistic insights into indole radical cations will promote the further development of oxidation-induced indole functionalizations.

Abstract
Radical/radical cross-coupling remains challenging due to diffusion control issues. Herein, we report a visible-light-induced radical/radical cross-coupling reaction of quaternary ammonium salts and Hantzschs via C-N and C-C bond cleavage. The current synthetic approach furnishes 1,2-diphenylethanes in moderate to good yields and provides a method for the construction of the C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond.

Abstract
The first transition metal catalytic one-step synthesis of the 3a, 3a'-bispyrrolidino [2,3-b] indoline scaffold via tandem cyclization/dimerization of tryptamines has been realized with the environmentally friendly O2/air as the sole oxidant. Different from the traditional direct oxidation of indole "N-H" group by excess amount of metal salts, a copper-catalyzed oxidative cyclization reaction is developed for the formation of the radical pyrrolidinoindoline intermediate in the current strategy. The robustness and practicality of this methodology is demonstrated by the step-economic, divergent total synthesis of natural products (±)-folicanthine and meso-folicanthine.

Abstract
The catalytic union of amides, sulfonamides, anilines, imines or N-heterocycles with a broad spectrum of electronically and sterically diverse alkyl bromides has been achieved via a visible light-induced metallaphotoredox platform. The use of a halogen abstraction-radical capture (HARC) mechanism allows for room temperature coupling of C(sp3 )-bromides using simple Cu(II) salts, effectively bypassing the prohibitively high barriers typically associated with thermally-induced SN2 or SN1 N-alkylation. This regio- and chemoselective protocol is compatible with >10 classes of medicinally-relevant N-nucleophiles, including established pharmaceutical agents, in addition to structurally diverse primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl bromides. Furthermore, the capacity of HARC methodologies to engage conventionally inert coupling partners is highlighted via the union of N-nucleophiles with cyclopropyl bromides and unactivated alkyl chlorides, substrates that are incompatible with nucleophilic substitution pathways. Preliminary mechanistic experiments validate the dual catalytic, open-shell nature of this platform, which enables reactivity previously unattainable in traditional halide-based N-alkylation systems.

Abstract
This personal account is mainly focused on the author's involvement in the field of transition metal-catalyzed peroxide based radical reactions. Over the past decades, radical chemistry has flourished and become crucial in contemporary synthetic organic chemistry. Owing to the presence of a single electron in one orbital, radicals are very unstable and react very fast. To carry out desired transformations and to control the side reactions the stabilizations of these radicals is essential. Fortunately, the implementation of a suitable transition metal and peroxide combination into the radical reactions have proved beneficial. Transition metals not only stabilizes the radicals but also protects them from being quenched by undesired homo-coupling or fragmentation. Transition metal-catalyzed radical-radical reactions provide an innovative way for the construction and derivatization of carbocycles and heterocycles. The objective of this review is to give an overview of the construction and derivatization of heterocycles through the lens of radical chemistry, mainly focusing on research work done by our group.

Abstract
We report a redox-neutral P(O)-N coupling reaction of P(O)-H compounds with azides via photoredox and copper catalysis, providing new access to useful phosphinamides, phosphonamides, and phosphoramides. This transformation tolerates a wide range of nucleophilic functionalities including alcohol and amine nucleophiles, which makes up for the deficiency of classical nitrogen nucleophilic substitution reactions. As a demonstration of the broad potential applications of this new methodology, late-stage functionalization of a diverse array of azido-bearing natural products and drug molecules, a preliminary asymmetric reaction, and a continuous visible-light photoflow process have been developed.

Abstract
Asymmetric functionalization of alkyl radicals represents a robust yet underdeveloped method for efficient construction and decoration of carbon skeletons in chiral organic molecules. In this field, we have been inspired by the excellent redox, alkyl radical trapping, and Lewis acidic properties of copper to develop several catalytic modes for asymmetric reactions involving alkyl radicals. At the beginning, we discovered tandem radical hydrotrifluoromethylation of unactivated alkenes and enantioselective alkoxylation of remote C(sp3)-H bonds by copper/chiral phosphate relay catalysis. This success has stimulated us to develop an asymmetric three-component 1,2-dicarbofunctionalization of 1,1-diarylalkenes using a similar strategy via radical intermediates. Meanwhile, we also discovered a copper/chiral secondary amine cooperative catalyst for asymmetric radical intramolecular cyclopropanation of alkenes using α-aldehyde methylene groups as C1 sources. The trapping of alkyl radical intermediates by CuII species during the reaction was essential for the chemoselectivity toward cyclopropanation. Encouraged by the efficient enantiocontrol with chiral phosphate and the effective trapping of alkyl radicals with CuII species, we then sought to develop copper/chiral phosphate as a single-electron-transfer catalyst for asymmetric reactions involving alkyl radicals. Subsequently, we successfully achieved a series of highly enantioselective 1,2-aminofluoroalkylation, -aminoarylation, -diamination, -aminosilylation, and -oxytrifluoromethylation of unactivated alkenes. The key for high enantioinduction was believed to be the effective trapping of alkyl radicals by CuII/chiral phosphate complexes. Besides, an achiral pyridine ligand was found to be indispensable for achieving high enantioselectivity, presumably via stabilization of CuIII species in the 1,2-alkoxytrifluoromethylation reaction. This discovery reminded us of tuning the redox properties and chemoreactivity of copper centers with an ancillary ligand. As a result, we subsequently identified cinchona alkaloid-derived sulfonamides as novel neutral-anionic hybrid ligands for simultaneous chemo- and enantiocontrol. We thus accomplished highly enantioselective 1,2-iminoxytrifluoromethylation of unactivated alkenes under the catalysis of copper/cinchona alkaloid-derived sulfonamide ligand, affording trifluoromethylated isoxazolines in high enantiomeric excess. Our copper-catalyzed asymmetric reactions with alkyl radicals provide expedient access to a diverse range of valuable chiral molecules with broad application potential in areas of organic synthesis, medicine, agrochemical, and material sciences.

Abstract
The direct chlorination of C-H bonds has received considerable attention in recent years. In this work, a metal-free protocol for hydrocarbon C-H bond chlorination with commercially available N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS) catalyzed by N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) with 2,3-dicyano-5,6-dichlorobenzoquinone (DDQ) functioning as an external radical initiator is presented. Aliphatic and benzylic substituents and also heteroaromatic ones were found to be well tolerated. Both the experiments and theoretical analysis indicate that the reaction goes through a process wherein NHPI functions as a catalyst rather than as an initiator. On the other hand, the hydrogen abstraction of the C-H bond conducted by a PINO species rather than the highly reactive N-centered radicals rationalizes the high chemoselectivity of the monochlorination obtained by this protocol as the latter is reactive towards the C(sp3)-H bonds of the monochlorides. The present results could hold promise for further development of a nitroxy-radical system for the highly selective functionalization of the aliphatic and benzylic hydrocarbon C-H.

Abstract
The computational investigation of a titanium-catalysed reductive radical-radical coupling is reported. The results match the conclusions from an earlier experimental study and enable a further interpretation of the previously observed complex reaction kinetics. Furthermore, the interplay between neutral and cationic reaction pathways in titanium(iii)-catalysed reactions is investigated for the first time. The results show that hydrochloride additives and reaction byproducts play an important role in the respective equilibria. A full reaction profile is assembled and the computed activation barrier is found to be in reasonable agreement with the experiment. The conclusions are of fundamental importance to the field of low-valent titanium catalysis and the understanding of related catalytic radical-radical coupling reactions.

Abstract
The development of a general catalytic method for the direct and stereoselective construction of cyclopropanes bearing highly congested vicinal all-carbon quaternary stereocenters remains a formidable challenge in chemical synthesis. Here, we report an intramolecular radical cyclopropanation of unactivated alkenes with simple α-methylene group of aldehydes as C1 source via a Cu(I)/secondary amine cooperative catalyst, which enables the single-step construction of bicyclo[3.1.0]hexane skeletons with excellent efficiency, broad substrate scope covering various terminal, internal alkenes as well as diverse (hetero)aromatic, alkenyl, alkyl-substituted geminal alkenes. Moreover, this reaction has been successfully realized to an asymmetric transformation, providing an attractive approach for the construction of enantioenriched bicyclo[3.1.0]hexanes bearing two crucial vicinal all-carbon quaternary stereocenters with good to excellent enantioselectivity. The utility of this method is illustrated by facile transformations of the products into various useful chiral synthetic intermediates. Preliminary mechanistic studies support a stepwise radical process for this formal [2 + 1] cycloaddition.
