Off-axis points encoding/decoding with orbital angular momentum spectrum

Orthogonality of non-coaxial Laguerre-Gaussian beams

The conventional orthogonality of Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams is widely recognized and serves as the fundamental basis for mode division multiplexing utilizing LG beams as channels. However, this conventional orthogonality holds true only when two LG beams share the same axis. Whether non-coaxial LG beams, with parallel axes separated by a distance, are orthogonal to each other remains an open question. To address this issue and reveal the orthogonality of non-coaxial LG beams, we analytically derive the projection of one LG beam onto another. This projection exhibits a helical phase and a rotationally symmetric amplitude with dark rings present. These dark rings indicate that two non-coaxial LG beams are indeed orthogonal to each other when their axes are appropriately separated. Furthermore, any pair of non-coaxial LG beams within a set also exhibit orthogonality when their axes are fixed at a certain separation distance. This novel form of orthogonality predicts an innovative compound multiplexing technique that simultaneously combines mode and space, enabling more efficient packing of multiple LG beams within a single transmission aperture while maintaining parallel and closely spaced beam axes.

Multi-View 3D Integral Imaging Systems Using Projectors and Mobile Devices

Glassless 3D displays using projectors and mobile phones based on integral imaging technology have been developed. Three-dimensional image files are created from the 2D images captured by a conventional camera. Large size 3D images using four HD and Ultra HD 4K projectors are created with a viewing angle of 35 degrees and a large depth. Three-dimensional images are demonstrated using optimized lenticular lenses and mobile smartphones, such as LG and Samsung with resolution 2560 × 1440, and 4K Sony with resolution 3840 × 2160.

Encoding and Multiplexing of 2D Images with Orbital Angular Momentum Beams and the Use for Multiview Color Displays

The orthogonal nature of different orbital angular momentum modes enables information transmission in optical communications with increased bandwidth through mode division multiplexing. So far the related works have been focused on using orbital angular momentum modes to encode/decode and multiplex point-based on-axis signals for maximum data channel numbers and capacity. Whether orbital angular momentum modes can be utilized to encode/decode off-axis signals for multiplexing in two-dimensional space is of significant importance both fundamentally and practically for its enormous potential in increasing the channel information capacity. In this work, a direct use of orbital angular momentum modes to encode/decode and multiplex two-dimensional images is realized in a scalable multiview display architecture, which can be utilized for viewing three-dimensional images from different angles. The effect of off-axis encoding/decoding and the resultant crosstalk between multiplexed different two-dimensional views are studied. Based on which, a color display of good image quality with four independent views is demonstrated. The resolution of the decoded images is analyzed and the limitation of this approach discussed. Moreover, a spatially multiplexed data communication scheme is also proposed with such a two-dimensional encoding/decoding approach to significantly enhance the data transmission capacity in free space for future data communication needs.
