Far-field superresolution of thermal sources by double homodyne or double array homodyne detection

We propose two schemes for estimating the separation of two thermal sources via double homodyne and double array homodyne detection considering the joint measurement of conjugate quadratures of the image plane field.By using the Cramér-Rao bound, we demonstrate that the two schemes can estimate the separation well below the Rayleigh limit and have an advantage over direct imaging when the average photon number per source exceeds five.For arbitrary source strengths, double homodyne detection is superior to homodyne detection when the separation is above 25/4 σ/N s , σ is the beam width, Ns is the average photon number per source.A larger separation can be estimated better via double array homodyne detection with the superiority of flexible operation compared with other schemes. High-speed and high-efficiency detection enables the measurement schemes with potential practical applications in fluorescence microscopy, astronomy and quantum imaging.

Spatial-mode demultiplexing for enhanced intensity and distance measurement

Spatial-mode demultiplexing (SPADE) has recently been adopted to measure the separation in the transverse plane between two incoherent point-like sources with sub-wavelength separation. It has been argued that this approach may yield extraordinary performances in the photon-counting regime. Here, we explore SPADE as a tool for precision measurements in the regime of bright, incoherent sources. First we analyze the general problem of estimating the second moments of the source's intensity distribution, for an extended incoherent source of any shape. Our theory predicts a substantial improvement in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of SPADE over direct imaging in the sub-wavelength regime. Second, we present an experimental application of SPADE to the case of two point-like, bright sources. We demonstrate the use of this setup for the estimation of the transverse separation and for the estimation of the relative intensity, confirming the expected improvement in SNR.

Optical storage of Ince-Gaussian modes in warm atomic vapor

We report on the optical storage of Ince-Gaussian modes in a warm rubidium vapor cell based on electromagnetically induced transparency protocol, and we also qualitatively analyze how atomic diffusion affects the retrieved beams after storage. Ince-Gaussian modes possess very complex and abundant spatial structures and form a complete infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. Successfully storing such modes could open up possibilities for fundamental high-dimensional optical communication experiments.

Quantum imaging and information

The maturity of fields such as optical physics and quantum optics has brought with it a new era where the photon represents a promising information resource. In the past few years, scientists and engineers have exploited multiple degrees of freedom of the photon to perform information processing for a wide variety of applications. Of particular importance, the transverse spatial degree of freedom has offered a flexible platform to test complex quantum information protocols in a relatively simple fashion. In this regard, novel imaging techniques that exploit the quantum properties of light have also been investigated. In this review article, we define the fundamental parameters that describe the spatial wavefunction of the photon and establish their importance for applications in quantum information processing. More specifically, we describe the underlying physics behind remarkable protocols in which information is processed through high-dimensional spatial states of photons with sub-shot-noise levels or where quantum images with unique resolution features are formed. We also discuss the fundamental role that certain imaging techniques have played in the development of novel methods for quantum information processing and vice versa.

Interferometry-based modal analysis with finite aperture effects

We analyze the effects of aperture finiteness on interferograms recorded to unveil the modal content of optical beams in arbitrary bases using generalized interferometry. We develop a scheme for modal reconstruction from interferometric measurements that accounts for the ensuing clipping effects. Clipping-cognizant reconstruction is shown to yield significant performance gains over traditional schemes that overlook such effects that do arise in practice.

Interferometric spatial mode analyzer with a bucket detector

A spatial mode analyzer based on a Michelson interferometer with a bucket detector is experimentally implemented. The delay line in the interferometer is an optical implementation of the fractional Fourier transform (fFT) which enables the spatial mode analysis of a given input field in the Hermite-Gaussian (HG) mode basis. Modal weights for both 1D and 2D input fields are experimentally measured. Results for input fields comprising of multiple HG modes are also presented.

Single-photon three-qubit quantum logic using spatial light modulators

The information-carrying capacity of a single photon can be vastly expanded by exploiting its multiple degrees of freedom: spatial, temporal, and polarization. Although multiple qubits can be encoded per photon, to date only two-qubit single-photon quantum operations have been realized. Here, we report an experimental demonstration of three-qubit single-photon, linear, deterministic quantum gates that exploit photon polarization and the two-dimensional spatial-parity-symmetry of the transverse single-photon field. These gates are implemented using a polarization-sensitive spatial light modulator that provides a robust, non-interferometric, versatile platform for implementing controlled unitary gates. Polarization here represents the control qubit for either separable or entangling unitary operations on the two spatial-parity target qubits. Such gates help generate maximally entangled three-qubit Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger and W states, which is confirmed by tomographical reconstruction of single-photon density matrices. This strategy provides access to a wide range of three-qubit states and operations for use in few-qubit quantum information processing protocols.

Photons are essential for quantum information processing, but to date only two-qubit single-photon operations have been realized. Here the authors demonstrate experimentally a three-qubit single-photon linear deterministic quantum gate by exploiting polarization along with spatial-parity symmetry.
