Formation mechanism of fivefold deformation twins in a face-centered cubic alloy

Uneven Strain Distribution Induces Consecutive Dislocation Slipping, Plane Gliding, and Subsequent Detwinning of Penta-Twinned Nanoparticles

Twin structures possess distinct physical and chemical properties by virtue of their specific twin configuration. However, twinning and detwinning processes are not fully understood on the atomic scale. Integrating in situ high resolution transmission electron microscopy and molecular dynamic simulations, we find tensile strain in the asymmetrical 5-fold twins of Au nanoparticles leads to twin boundary migration through dislocation sliding (slipping of an atomic layer) along twin boundaries and dislocation reactions at the 5-fold axis under an electron beam. Migration of one or two layers of twin planes is governed by energy barriers, but overall, the total energy, including surface, lattice strain, and twin boundary energy, is relaxed after consecutive twin boundary migration, leading to a detwinning process. In addition, surface rearrangement of 5-fold twinned nanoparticles can aid in the detwinning process.

Plasticity through De-Twinning in Twinned BCC Nanowires

The deformation behaviour of twinned FCC nanowires has been extensively investigated in recent years. However, the same is not true for their BCC counterparts. Very few studies exist concerning the deformation behaviour of twinned BCC nanowires. In view of this, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed to understand the deformation mechanisms in twinned BCC Fe nanowires. The twin boundaries (TBs) were oriented parallel to the loading direction [110] and the number of TBs is varied from one to three. MD simulation results indicate that deformation under the compressive loading of twinned BCC Fe nanowires is dominated by a unique de-twinning mechanism involving the migration of a special twin–twin junction. This de-twinning mechanism results in the complete annihilation of pre-existing TBs along with reorientation of the nanowire. Further, it has been observed that the annihilation of pre-existing TBs has occurred through two different mechanisms, one without any resolved shear stress and other with finite and small resolved shear stress. The present study enhances our understanding of de-twinning in BCC nanowires.

3D Bragg coherent diffractive imaging of five-fold multiply twinned gold nanoparticle

The formation mechanism of five-fold multiply twinned nanoparticles has been a long-term topic because of their geometrical incompatibility. So, various models have been proposed to explain how the internal structure of the multiply twinned nanoparticles accommodates the constraints of the solid-angle deficiency. We investigate the internal structure, strain field and strain energy density of 600 nm sized five-fold multiply twinned gold nanoparticles quantitatively using Bragg coherent diffractive imaging, which is suitable for the study of buried defects and three-dimensional strain distribution with great precision. Our study reveals that the strain energy density in five-fold multiply twinned gold nanoparticles is an order of magnitude higher than that of the single nanocrystals such as an octahedron and triangular plate synthesized under the same conditions. This result indicates that the strain developed while accommodating an angular misfit, although partially released through the introduction of structural defects, is still large throughout the crystal.
