Regiospecific beta-functionalization of free-base porphyrins by pseudohalogens

Pseudohalogens based on iodine ('I-X') can be used to regiospecifically introduce chlorine atoms or acetoxy groups onto the beta-positions of meso-tetraphenylporphyrins (TPPs). TPPs and a quinoxaline derivative were reacted with iodine monochloride to give mono- or di-chlorinated porphyrins, such that when two chlorine atoms were added they were placed antipodally on the porphyrin ring. Reaction of the porphyrins with a mixture of iodine and silver acetate gave the corresponding mono- and di-acetoxylated porphyrins. The acetoxylated porphyrins could be simply transformed to the corresponding hydroxyporphyrins with subsequent oxidation with the Dess-Martin periodinane, giving a simple new route to chlorin-alpha-diones and bacteriochlorin-tetraones. From the products of the reactions and a UV-visible spectroscopic study, it is proposed that the reactions proceed via a single electron transfer mechanism through a porphyrin cation radical intermediate.

Azobenzene-linked porphyrin-fullerene dyads

A new group of porphyrin-fullerene dyads with an azobenzene linker was synthesized, and the photochemical and photophysical properties of these materials were investigated using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic methods. The electrochemical properties of these compounds were also studied in detail. The synthesis involved oxidative heterocoupling of free base tris-aryl-p-aminophenyl porphyrins with a p-aminophenylacetal, followed by deprotection to give the aldehyde, and finally Prato 1,3-dipolar azomethineylide cycloaddition to C60. The corresponding Zn(II)-porphyrin (ZnP) dyads were made by treating the free base dyads with zinc acetate. The final dyads were characterized by their 1H NMR, mass, and UV-vis spectra. 3He NMR was used to determine if the products are a mixture of cis and trans stereoisomers, or a single isomer. The data are most consistent with the isolation of only a single configurational isomer, assigned to the trans (E) configuration. The ground-state UV-vis spectra are virtually a superimposition of the spectral features of the individual components, indicating there is no interaction of the fullerene (F) and porphyrin (H2P/ZnP) moieties in the ground state. This conclusion is supported by the electrochemical data. The steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectra indicate that the porphyrin fluorescence in the dyads is very strongly quenched at room temperature in the three solvents studied: toluene, tetrahydrofuran (THF), and benzonitrile (BzCN). The fluorescence lifetimes of the dyads in all solvents are sharply reduced compared to those of H2P and ZnP standards. In toluene, the lifetimes of the free base dyads are 600-790 ps compared to 10.1 ns for the standard, while in THF and BzCN the dyad lifetimes are less than 100 ps. For the ZnP dyads, the fluorescence lifetimes were 10-170 ps vs 2.1-2.2 ns for the ZnP references. The mechanism of the fluorescence quenching was established using time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. In toluene, the quenching process is singlet-singlet energy transfer (k approximately 10(11) s-1) to give C60 singlet excited states which decay with a lifetime of 1.2 ns to give very long-lived C60 triplet states. In THF and BzCN, quenching of porphyrin singlet states occurs at a similar rate, but now by electron transfer, to give charge-separated radical pair (CSRP) states, which show transient absorption spectra very similar to those reported for other H2P-C60 and ZnP-C60 dyad systems. The lifetimes of the CSRP states are in the range 145-435 ns in THF, much shorter than for related systems with amide, alkyne, silyl, and hydrogen-bonded linkers. Thus, both forward and back electron transfer is facilitated by the azobenzene linker. Nonetheless, the charge recombination is 3-4 orders of magnitude slower than charge separation, demonstrating that for these types of donor-acceptor systems back electron transfer is occurring in the Marcus inverted region.

Synthesis of Porphyrin Dimers Fused with a Benzene Unit

Bicyclo[2.2.2]octadiene-connected pyrrolo-porphyrins have been prepared by an inverse-type [3+1] porphyrin synthesis of a bicyclo[2.2.2]octadiene-fused dipyrrole with a tripyrrane dicarbaldehyde. Another [3+1] porphyrin synthesis of pyrrole-connected porphyrins with the same or other tripyrrane dicarbaldehydes gave bicyclo[2.2.2]octadiene-bridged diporphyrins, the central metals and/or peripheral substituents of which were different. Thermal decomposition of the bicyclo[2.2.2]octadiene skeleton to a benzene moiety gave pi-system-fused porphyrin dimers in a highly pure form.

Porphyrin-Diones and Porphyrin-Tetraones: Reversible Redox Units Being Localized within the Porphyrin Macrocycle and Their Effect on Tautomerism

Porphyrin-2,3-diones and porphyrin-2,3,7,8- and porphyrin-2,3,12,13-tetraones were shown to have a redox-active unit that can function independently of the macrocycle at large. Electroreduction of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)porphyrin-2,3-diones [(P-dione)M] and the corresponding -2,3,12,13-tetraones [L-(P-tetraone)M] and -2,3,7,8-tetraones [C-(P-tetraone)M], where M = 2H, CuII, ZnII, NiII, and PdII was investigated and the products were characterized by ESR and thin-layer UV-visible spectroelectrochemistry. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical data show that the first two reductions of the porphyrin-diones and the first three reductions of the porphyrin-tetraones occur at the dione units. This was confirmed by ESR spectra of first reduction products which show that the electron spin is totally localized on a semidione unit, independent of the central metal ion and of the number and location of dione units. ESR spectra of the radical anions derived from free-base porphyrin-2,3-dione [(P-dione)2H] and porphyrin-2,3,12,13-tetraone [L-(P-tetraone)2H] confirm the trans-arrangement of the two inner protons and their location on nonsubstituted pyrrolic rings, thereby maintaining an 18-atom 18-pi electron bacteriochlorin-like aromatic delocalization pathway. The redox unit is not similarly isolated in the corner free-base porphyrin-2,3,7,8-tetraone [C-(P-tetraone)2H]. A one-electron reduction of C-(P-tetraone)2H leads to the formation of a tautomer with trans inner hydrogens with one residing on the N of the ring with the reduced unit as the only detectable product. This process is favorable because it creates a more delocalized 18-atom 18-pi electron aromatic pathway. This result is consistent with the measured redox potentials which show the first reduction of C-(P-tetraone)2H to be substantially easier than (P-dione)2H or L-(P-tetraone)2H.

Preparation, electrochemical and spectral properties of N-methylated pyridylethynyl porphyrins

A new series of electron-deficient porphyrins were prepared by attaching one or two N-methylated 2-, 3- or 4-pyridylethynyl groups to the 10,20-meso positions of (5,15-biphenylporphinato)zinc(II). Electrochemical studies showed significant changes in the reduction potentials of these porphyrins, and N-methyl-2-pyridylethyne is the strongest electron-withdrawing substituent in the series. UV-visible spectra demonstrated largely red-shifted absorptions, and N-methyl-4-pyridylethyne has the greatest impact to the porphyrin absorptions. Electrochemical, UV-visible and EPR results concluded that porphyrins Zn2 and Zn6 reversibly undergo two one-electron porphyrin-ring reductions to their anion radicals then dianions. The first reductions of porphyrins Zn1, Zn3, Zn4 and Zn5 were irreversible one-electron transfer processes. The instability of these reduction products was suggested to result from the eletrophilic attacks at the substituents.
