Abstract
Carbon-fluorine bonds are stable and have demonstrated sluggishness against various chemical manipulations. However, selective transformations of C-F bonds can be achieved by developing appropriate conditions as useful synthetic methods in organic chemistry. This review focuses on C-C bond formation at monofluorinated sp3 -hybridized carbons via C-F bond cleavage, including cross-coupling and multi-component coupling reactions. The C-F bond cleavage mechanisms on the sp3 -hybridized carbon centers can be primarily categorized into three types: Lewis acids promoted F atom elimination to generate carbocation intermediates; nucleophilic substitution with metal or carbon nucleophiles supported by the activation of C-F bonds by coordination of Lewis acids; and the cleavage of C-F bonds via a single electron transfer. The characteristic features of alkyl fluorides, in comparison with other (pseudo)halides as promising electrophilic coupling counterparts, are also discussed.

Abstract
The reaction of the Pt complexes cis‐[Pt(CH3)2{R2P(Ind)}2] (Ind=2‐(3‐methyl)indolyl, R=Ph (1 a), 4‐FC6H4 (1 b), 4‐CF3C6H4 (1 c)) with HF afforded the fluorido complexes trans‐[Pt(F(HF)2)(CH3){R2P(Ind)}2] 2 a–c, which can be converted into trans‐[Pt(F)(CH3){R2P(Ind)}2] (3 a–c) by treatment with CsF. Addition of 3‐hexyne to 2 a–c gave alkyne complexes trans‐[Pt(C,C‐η2‐C2H5C≡CC2H5)(CH3){R2P(Ind)}2{F(HF)2}] (4 a–c) at which a fluoride is stabilised as polyfluoride in the coordination sphere by hydrogen bonding to the indolyl‐substituted phosphine ligands. Subsequent heating of a solution of 4 a in the presence of PVPHF led to fluoroalkene formation. Selective catalytic hydrofluorination of alkynes to yield (Z)‐fluoroalkenes were developed. The ability of hydrogen bonding to polyfluoride favours the fluorination step as demonstrated by studies with complexes bearing no indolyl groups at the phosphine ligands.

Abstract
Methods to functionalize arenes and heteroarenes in a site-selective manner are highly sought after for rapidly constructing value-added molecules of medicinal, agrochemical, and materials interest. One effective approach is the site-selective cross-coupling of polyhalogenated arenes bearing multiple, but identical, halogen groups. Such cross-coupling reactions have proven to be incredibly effective for site-selective functionalization. However, they also present formidable challenges due to the inherent similarities in the reactivities of the halogen substituents. In this Review, we discuss strategies for site-selective cross-couplings of polyhalogenated arenes and heteroarenes bearing identical halogens, beginning first with an overview of the reaction types that are more traditional in nature, such as electronically, sterically, and directing-group-controlled processes. Following these examples is a description of emerging strategies, which includes ligand- and additive/solvent-controlled reactions as well as photochemically initiated processes.

Abstract
The reaction of the rhodium(I) complexes [Rh(E)(PEt3)3] (E=GePh3 (1), H (6), F (7)) with 1,1,3,3,3‐pentafluoropropene afforded the defluorinative germylation products Z/E‐2‐(triphenylgermyl)‐1,3,3,3‐tetrafluoropropene and the fluorido complex [Rh(F)(CF3CHCF2)(PEt3)2] (2) together with the fluorophosphorane E‐(CF3)CH=CF(PFEt3). For [Rh(Si(OEt)3)(PEt3)3] (4) the coordination of the fluoroolefin was found to give [Rh{Si(OEt)3}(CF3CHCF2)(PEt3)2] (5). Two equivalents of complex 2 reacted further by C−F bond oxidative addition to yield [Rh(CF=CHCF3)(PEt3)2(μ‐F)3Rh(CF3CHCF2)(PEt3)] (9). The role of the fluorido ligand on the reactivity of complex 2 was assessed by comparison with the analogous chlorido complex. The use of complexes 1, 4 and 6 as catalysts for the derivatization of 1,1,3,3,3‐pentafluoropropene provided products, which were generated by hydrodefluorination, hydrometallation and germylation reactions.

Abstract
The activation of a carbon-fluorine bond is one of the most challenging topics in modern synthetic organic chemistry due to their low reactivity compared to other carbon-halogen bonds. In this review, we present the recent developments since 2015 on cross-coupling reactions that form C-C bonds via cleavage of C(sp2 )-F bonds. Not only the conventional activation of C(sp2 )-F bonds, but also decarbonylative or carbonyl-retentive cleavage of C(acyl)-F bonds will be introduced. This paper mainly describes new protocols for the formation of C(sp2 )-C(sp3 ), C(sp2 )-C(sp2 ), and C(sp2 )-C(sp) bonds via transition-metal-catalyzed cleavage of C(sp2 )-F bonds.

Abstract
The reaction of the rhodium(i) complexes [Rh(E)(PEt3)3] (E = GePh3 (1), Si(OEt)3 (5)) with HFO-1234yf (2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) afforded [Rh(F)(PEt3)3] (2) and the functionalized olefins Z-CF3CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH(E) (E = GePh3 (4a), Si(OEt)3 (7)). Conceivable reaction pathways were assessed using DFT calculations. Reactions of [Rh(E)(PEt3)3] with HFO-1234ze (E-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) yielded the rhodium fluorido complex 2 and [Rh{(E)-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH(CF3)}(PEt3)3] (9) via two different reaction pathways. Using complexes 1 and 5 as catalysts, functionalized building blocks were obtained.

Abstract
A nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling of toluene derivatives with both aryl bromides and chlorides using a NIXANTPHOS-ligated nickel(II) complex has been developed. The key factor to success is proposed to be the catalyst activation of toluene by a cation-π complex, enabling methyl arenes (p Ka ≈ 43) to be deprotonated with the relatively mild base NaN(SiMe3)2. This method facilitates access to a variety of sterically and electronically diverse hetero- and nonheteroaryl-containing diarylmethanes.

Nickel-catalyzed coupling reaction of alkyl halides with aryl Grignard reagents in the presence of 1,3-butadiene: mechanistic studies of four-component coupling and competing cross-coupling reactions. Abstract
We describe the mechanism, substituent effects, and origins of the selectivity of the nickel-catalyzed four-component coupling reactions of alkyl fluorides, aryl Grignard reagents, and two molecules of 1,3-butadiene that affords a 1,6-octadiene carbon framework bearing alkyl and aryl groups at the 3- and 8-positions, respectively, and the competing cross-coupling reaction. Both the four-component coupling reaction and the cross-coupling reaction are triggered by the formation of anionic nickel complexes, which are generated by the oxidative dimerization of two molecules of 1,3-butadiene on Ni(0) and the subsequent complexation with the aryl Grignard reagents. The C-C bond formation of the alkyl fluorides with the γ-carbon of the anionic nickel complexes leads to the four-component coupling product, whereas the cross-coupling product is yielded via nucleophilic attack of the Ni center toward the alkyl fluorides. These steps are found to be the rate-determining and selectivity-determining steps of the whole catalytic cycle, in which the C-F bond of the alkyl fluorides is activated by the Mg cation rather than a Li or Zn cation. ortho-Substituents of the aryl Grignard reagents suppressed the cross-coupling reaction leading to the selective formation of the four-component products. Such steric effects of the ortho-substituents were clearly demonstrated by crystal structure characterizations of ate complexes and DFT calculations. The electronic effects of the para-substituent of the aryl Grignard reagents on both the selectivity and reaction rates are thoroughly discussed. The present mechanistic study offers new insight into anionic complexes, which are proposed as the key intermediates in catalytic transformations even though detailed mechanisms are not established in many cases, and demonstrates their synthetic utility as promising intermediates for C-C bond forming reactions, providing useful information for developing efficient and straightforward multicomponent reactions.

Abstract
A series of fluorinated Ir(III)-terpyridine-phenylpyridine-X (X = anionic monodentate ligand) complexes were synthesized by selective C-F activation, whereby perfluorinated phenylpyridines were readily complexed. The combination of fluorinated phenylpyridine ligands with an electron-rich tri-tert-butyl terpyridine ligand generates a "push-pull" force on the electrons upon excitation, imparting significant enhancements to the stability, electrochemical, and photophysical properties of the complexes. Application of the complexes as photosensitizers for photocatalytic generation of hydrogen from water and as redox photocatalysts for decarboxylative fluorination of several carboxylic acids showcases the performance of the complexes in highly coordinating solvents, in some cases exceeding that of the leading photosensitizers. Changes in the photophysical properties and the nature of the excited states are observed as the compounds increase in fluorination as well as upon exchange of the ancillary chloride ligand to a cyanide. These changes in the excited states have been corroborated using density functional theory modeling.

Abstract
The rhodium(i) germyl complex [Rh(GePh3)(PEt3)3] is a useful tool for C–F and C–H bond activation reactions. For instance, treatment with hexafluoropropene results in the formation of two isomeric C–F activation products [Rh{(E)-CFCF(CF3)}(PEt3)3] and [Rh{(Z)-CFCF(CF3)}(PEt3)3] in a 3 : 1 ratio.

Abstract
Asymmetric allylic alkylation of β-ketoesters with allylic alcohols catalyzed by [Ni(cod)2]/(S)-H8-BINAP was found to be a superior synthetic protocol for constructing quaternary chiral centers at the α-position of β-ketoesters. The reaction proceeded in high yield and with high enantioselectivity using various β-ketoesters and allylic alcohols, without any additional activators. The versatility of this methodology for accessing useful and enantioenriched products was demonstrated.

Abstract
The rhodium(i) silyl carbonyl complexes [Rh{Si(OEt)3}(CO)(dippp)] () and [Rh{Si(OEt)3}(CO)(dippe)] () (dippp = 1,3-bis(diisopropylphosphino)propane, dippe = 1,2-bis-(diisopropylphosphino)ethane) were synthesized on treatment of the methyl compounds [Rh(CH3)(CO)(dippp)] () or [Rh(CH3)(CO)(dippe)] () with HSi(OEt)3 at low temperature. The methyl complexes and were prepared starting from the binuclear complexes [{Rh(μ-Cl)(dippp)}2] () and [{Rh(μ-Cl)(dippe)}2] (), respectively. The silyl complexes and as well as the precursors [{Rh(μ-I)(dippp)}2] (), [Rh(X)(CO)(dippp)] (: X = CH3, : X = I) and [Rh(X)(CO)(dippe)] (: X = CH3, : X = Cl) were characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy and the structures in the solid state were determined by X-ray crystallography. The silyl complex converts into the carbonyl-bridged complex [{Rh(μ-CO)(dippp)}2] () above temperatures of -30 °C by loss of the silyl ligand, whereas is more thermally stable and a reaction to the binuclear complex [{Rh(μ-CO)(dippe)}2] () was observed at 50 °C. The silyl complex reacted under irradiation with hexafluorobenzene and pentafluoropyridine to give the C-F activation products [Rh(C6F5)(CO)(dippe)] () and [Rh(2-C5F4N)(CO)(dippe)] (), respectively. As additional products the silyl dicarbonyl complex [Rh{Si(OEt)3}(CO)2(dippe)] () and the cationic complex [Rh2(μ-H)(μ-CO)2(dippe)2](+)[SiF5](-) () were identified. Compound was synthesized independently by treatment of with gaseous CO. In a similar manner, the dippp analogue [Rh{Si(OEt)3}(CO)2(dippp)] () was also prepared starting from . Photochemical reaction of with pentafluorobenzene and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine resulted selectively in C-H bond activation to afford and [Rh(4-C5F4N)(CO)(dippe)] (), respectively.
