Abstract
Several years ago the discovery of a conical intersection offered an explanation for the ultafast photodissociation of pyrrole. Subsequently, the photodissociation of pyrrole ammonia complexes PyH*(NH3)n with n ≥ 3 was studied in the gas phase as a model for a hydrogen-bond forming solvent. Two alternative mechanisms, electron coupled proton transfer (ECPT) and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT, also called the impulsive model, IM), have been proposed. The parent 1 : 1 complex was never studied, due to the short lifetime of the NH4 radical fragment. Here we report experiments on the deuterated species PyD*(ND3)n, including the 1 : 1 complex (n = 1). The velocity distribution of the ND4 radical is well approximated by a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution of T ≈ 530 K, with a negative anisotropy parameter of β = -0.3. The impulsive model predicts a much narrower velocity distribution with larger negative anisotropy. The ECPT model predicts a long lived intermediate that should allow thermal equilibration of the vibrational energy but should also destroy the rotational memory of the initially excited state. The average kinetic energy agrees with the prediction of the impulsive model, whereas the wide range of kinetic energies is more in line with ECPT. Hence the mechanism seems to be more complex and requires further theoretical modelling.

Abstract
Processes that proceed in femtoseconds are usually referred to as being ultrafast, and they are investigated in experiments that involve laser pulses with femtosecond duration in so-called pump probe schemes, where a light pulse triggers a molecular process and a second light pulse interrogates the temporal evolution of the molecular population. The focus of this review is on the reactivity patterns that arise when energy is not equally distributed on all the available degrees of freedom as a consequence of the very short time scale in play and on how the localization of internal energy in a specific mode can be thought of as directing a process toward (or away from) a certain outcome. The nonstatistical aspects are illustrated with examples from photophysics and photochemistry for a range of organic molecules. The processes are initiated by a variety of nuclear motions that are all governed by the energy gradients in the Franck-Condon region. Essentially, the molecules will start to adapt to the new electronic environment on the excited state to eventually reach the equilibrium structure. It is this structural change that is enabling an ultrafast electronic transition in cases where the nuclear motion leads to a transition point with significant coupling between to electronic states and to ultrafast reaction if there is a coupling to a reactive mode at the transition point between the involved states. With the knowledge of the relation between electronic excitation and equilibrium structure, it is possible to predict how the nuclei move after excitation and often whether an ultrafast (and inherently nonstatistical) electronic transition or even a bond breakage will take place. In addition to the understanding of how nonstatistical photoinduced processes proceed from a given excited state, it has been found that randomization of the energy does not even always take place when the molecule takes part in processes that are normally considered statistical, such as for example nonradiative transitions between excited states. This means that energy can be localized in a specific degree of freedom on a state other than the one that is initially prepared. This is a finding that could kickoff the ultimate dream in applied photochemistry; namely light excitation that leads to the rupture of a specific bond.

Abstract
Many recent experimental ultrafast spectroscopy studies have hinted at non-adiabatic dynamics indicating the existence of conical intersections, but their direct observation remains a challenge. The rapid change of the energy gap between the electronic states complicated their observation by requiring bandwidths of several electron volts. In this manuscript, we propose to use the combined information of different x-ray pump-probe techniques to identify the conical intersection. We theoretically study the conical intersection in pyrrole using transient x-ray absorption, time-resolved x-ray spontaneous emission, and linear off-resonant Raman spectroscopy to gather evidence of the curve crossing.

Abstract
Strong light-matter coupling provides a new strategy to manipulate the non-adiabatic dynamics of molecules by modifying potential energy surfaces. The vacuum field of nanocavities can couple strongly with the molecular degrees of freedom and form hybrid light-matter states, termed as polaritons or dressed states. The photochemistry of molecules possessing intrinsic conical intersections can be significantly altered by introducing cavity couplings to create new conical intersections or avoided crossings. Here, we explore the effects of optical cavities on the photo-induced hydrogen elimination reaction of pyrrole. Wave packet dynamics simulations have been performed on the two-state, two-mode model of pyrrole, combined with the cavity photon mode. Our results show how the optical cavities assist in controlling the photostability of pyrrole and influence the reaction mechanism by providing alternative dissociation pathways. The cavity effects have been found to be intensely dependent on the resonance frequency. We further demonstrate the importance of the vibrational cavity couplings and dipole-self interaction terms in describing the cavity-modified non-adiabatic dynamics.

Abstract
Pyrrolyl (C4H4N) is a nitrogen-containing aromatic radical that is a derivative of pyrrole (C4H5N) and is an important intermediate in the combustion of biomass. It is also relevant for chemistry in Titan's atmosphere and may be present in the interstellar medium. The lowest-energy isomer, 1-pyrrolyl, has been involved in many experimental and theoretical studies of the N-H photodissociation of pyrrole, yet it has only been directly spectroscopically detected via electron paramagnetic resonance and through the photoelectron spectrum of the pyrrolide anion, yielding three vibrational frequencies. No direct measurements of 2- or 3-pyrrolyl have been made, and little information is known from theoretical calculations beyond their relative energies. Here, we present an ab initio quantum chemical characterization of the three pyrrolyl isomers at the CCSD(T) level of theory in their ground electronic states, with an emphasis on spectroscopic parameters relevant for vibrational and rotational spectroscopy. Equilibrium geometries were optimized at the CCSD(T)/cc-pwCVTZ level of theory, and the quadratic, cubic, and partial quartic force constants were evaluated at CCSD(T)/ANO0 for analysis using second-order vibrational perturbation theory to obtain harmonic and anharmonic vibrational frequencies. In addition, zero-point-corrected rotational constants, electronic spin-rotation tensors, and nuclear hyperfine tensors are calculated for rotational spectroscopy. Our computed structures and energies agree well with earlier density functional theory calculations, and spectroscopic parameters for 1-pyrrolyl are compared with the limited existing experimental data. Finally, we discuss strategies for detecting these radicals using rotational and vibrational spectroscopy on the basis of the calculated spectroscopic constants.

Abstract
Nitrogen-containing ions and molecules in the gas phase have been detected in non-Earth environments such as dark molecular clouds and more recently in the atmosphere of Saturn's moon Titan. These molecules may serve as precursors to larger heterocyclic structures that provide the foundation of complex biological molecules. On Titan, molecules of m/z 66 have been detected by the Cassini mission, and species of the empirical formula C4H4N may contribute to this signature. We have characterized seven isomers of C4H4N in anionic, neutral radical, and cationic states using density functional theory. Structures were optimized using the range-separated hybrid ωB97X-V with the cc-pVTZ and aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets. Anionic and radical C4H4N favor cyclic structures with aromatic and quasi-aromatic electron arrangements, respectively. Interestingly, ionization from the radical surface to the cation induces significant changes in structural stability, and the global minimum for positively charged isomers is CH2CCHCNH+, a pseudo-linear species reminiscent of cyanoallene. Select formation pathways to these structures from Titan's existing or postulated gas-phase species, reactions that are also relevant for other astrophysical environments, are discussed. By characterizing C4H4N isomers, we have identified energetically stable anionic, radical, and cationic structures that may be present in Titan's atmosphere and dark molecular clouds.

Abstract
The ultrafast dynamics of pentafluoropyridine in the 1 1B2 (ππ*) electronic state excited at λpump = 255 nm is investigated by femtosecond time-resolved time-of-flight mass spectrometry and photoelectron imaging spectroscopy. A pronounced, long-lived, and complex periodic modulation of the transient ion yield signal with contributions by four distinct frequency components, 72 cm-1, 144 cm-1, 251 cm-1, and 281 cm-1, is observed for up to 9 ps. The recorded photoelectron images display a spectral band from the excited 1 1B2 (ππ*) state only in the oscillation maxima; the signal is strongly reduced in the oscillation minima. Supported by electronic structure calculations at the RI-SCS-CC2 and XMCQDPT2 levels of theory, the oscillating components of the signal are identified as frequencies of b1 symmetry coupling modes in a vibronic coherence of the 1 1B2 (ππ*) and 1 1A2 (πσ*) electronic states. The optical excitation initiates regular and periodic wavepacket motion along those out-of-plane modes. In the distorted molecular structure, the initially excited state acquires substantial πσ* character that modulates the transition dipole moment for ionization and results in the observed oscillations.

Abstract
Evolution has ensured that plants and animals have developed effective protection mechanisms against the potentially harmful effects of incident ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Tanning is one such mechanism in humans, but tanning only occurs post-exposure to UVR. Hence, there is ever growing use of commercial sunscreens to pre-empt overexposure to UVR. Key requirements for any chemical filter molecule used in such a photoprotective capacity include a large absorption cross-section in the UV-A and UV-B spectral regions and the availability of one or more mechanisms whereby the absorbed photon energy can be dissipated without loss of the molecular integrity of the chemical filter. Here we summarise recent experimental (mostly ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy studies) and computational progress towards unravelling various excited state decay mechanisms that afford the necessary photostability in chemical filters found in nature and those used in commercial sunscreens. We also outline ways in which a better understanding of the photophysics and photochemistry of sunscreen molecules selected by nature could aid the design of new and improved commercial sunscreen formulations.

Abstract
Imidazole [C3H4N2] is ubiquitous in nature as an important biological building block of amino acids, purine nucleobases or antibiotics. In the present study, dissociative electron attachment to imidazole shows low energy shape resonances at 1.52 and 2.29 eV leading to the most abundant dehydrogenated anion [imidazole - H]- through dehydrogenation at the N1 position. All the other anions formed exhibit core excited resonances observed dominantly at similar electron energies of ∼7 and 11 eV, suggesting an initial formation through two temporary negative ion states. Among these anions, multiple dehydrogenation reactions are observed resulting in the loss of 2 up to 4 hydrogens, thus, leading to a complete dehydrogenation of the imidazole molecule, an interesting prototype of complex unimolecular decay induced by the attachment of a single electron. Additionally, the quantum chemical calculations reveal that these multiple dehydrogenation reactions are responsible for the remarkable one electron-induced gas-phase chemistry leading to the opening of the ring. The formation of the observed anions is likely driven by the high positive electron affinity of cyanocarbon molecules supported by quantum chemical calculations. The formation of H- showed additional resonance at about 5 eV and dipolar dissociation above ∼14 eV.

Abstract
In this work, we have investigated nonadiabatic dynamics in the vicinity of conical intersections for predissociation reactions of partially deuterated thioanisole molecules: C6H5S-CH2D and C6H5S-CHD2. Each isotopomer has two distinct rotational conformers according to the geometrical position of D or H of the methyl moiety with respect to the molecular plane for C6H5S-CH2D or C6H5S-CHD2, respectively, as spectroscopically characterized in our earlier report [J. Lee, S.-Y. Kim and S. K. Kim, J. Phys. Chem. A, 2014, 118, 1850]. Since identification and separation of two different rotational conformers of each isotopomer have been unambiguously done, we could interrogate nonadiabatic dynamics of thioanisole in terms of both H/D substitutional and conformational structural effects. Nonadiabatic transition probability, estimated by the experimentally measured branching ratio of the nonadiabatically produced ground-state channel giving C6H5S·(X[combining tilde]) versus the adiabatic excited-state channel leading to the C6H5S·(Ã) radical, shows resonance-like increases at symmetric (νs) or asymmetric (7a) S-CH2D (or S-CHD2) stretching mode excitation in S1 for all conformational isomers of two isotopomers. However, absolute probabilistic value of the nonadiabatic transition is found to vary quite drastically depending on different conformers and isotopomers. The experimental finding that nonadiabatic transition dynamics are very sensitive to subtle changes in the nuclear configuration within the Franck-Condon region induced by the H/D substitution indicates that the S1/S2 conical intersection seam is quite narrowly defined in the multi-dimensional nuclear configurational space as far as the S-methyl predissociation reaction is concerned. In order to understand the relation between molecular structure and nonadiabaticity of reaction, potential energy surfaces near S1/S2 conical intersections have been theoretically calculated along νs and 7a normal mode coordinates for all conformational isomers. Slow-electron velocity map imaging (SEVI) spectroscopy is employed to unravel the extent of intramolecular vibrational redistribution (IVR) for particular mode excitations of S1, providing insights into the dynamic interplay between IVR and nonadiabatic transition probability near the conical intersection seam.

Abstract
We have employed combined electronic structure calculations and nonadiabatic dynamics simulations to study the S1 radiationless deactivation mechanism of pyrazole. In terms of MS-CASPT2 computed results, we propose that the 1πσ* state-driven nonadiabatic N-N dissociation is a major relaxation path; the ring-puckering deformation path as well as the 1πσ* state-driven N-H dissociation are less favorable. This excited-state decay mechanism is supported by MS-CASPT2 nonadiabatic dynamics simulations. The present study demonstrates that pyrazole has a different excited-state radiationless deactivation mechanism compared with its structural isomer imidazole, in which the 1πσ* state-driven nonadiabatic N-H dissociation plays a more important role. However, such a channel is suppressed in pyrazole; instead, the 1πσ* state-driven nonadiabatic N-N dissociation is dominant.

Abstract
The photochemical and photophysical pathways operative in N-methylpyrrole, after excitation in the near part of its ultraviolet absorption spectrum, have been investigated by the combination of time-resolved total ion yield and photoelectron spectroscopies with high-level ab initio calculations. The results collected are remarkably different from the observations made for pyrrole and other aromatic systems, whose dynamics is dictated by the presence of πσ* excitations on X-H (X: N, O, S, ...) bonds. The presence of a barrier along the C-N dissociation coordinate that can not be tunneled triggers two alternative decay mechanisms for the S1 A″ πσ* state. While at low vibrational content the C-N dissociation occurs on the surface of a lower (3)ππ* state reached after efficient intersystem crossing, at higher excitation energies, the A″ πσ* directly internally converts to the ground state through a ring-twisted S1/S0 conical intersection. The findings explain previous observations on the molecule and may be relevant for more complex systems containing similar C-N bonds, such as the DNA nucleotides.

Two-color reduced-Doppler (TCRD) and one-color velocity map imaging (VMI) were used for probing H atom photofragments resulting from the ~243.1 nm photodissociation of pyrrole. The velocity components of the H photofragments were probed by employing two counterpropagating beams at close and fixed wavelengths of 243.15 and 243.12 nm in TCRD and a single beam at ~243.1 nm, scanned across the Doppler profile in VMI. The TCRD imaging enabled probing of the entire velocity distribution in a single pulse, resulting in enhanced ionization efficiency, as well as improved sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio. These advantages were utilized for studying the pyrrole photodissociation at ~243.1 and 225 nm, where the latter wavelength provided only a slight increase in the H yield over the self-signal from the probe beams. The TCRD imaging enabled obtaining high quality H(+) images, even for the low H photofragment yields formed in the 225 nm photolysis process, and allowed determining the velocity distributions and anisotropy parameters and getting insight into pyrrole photodissociation.
