Abstract
Recent reports demonstrate that technologies generating hydrated electrons (eaq-; e.g., UV-sulfite) are a promising strategy for destruction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, but fundamental rate constants are lacking. This work examines the kinetics and mechanisms of eaq- reactions with ultra-short chain (C2-C4) fluorocarboxylates using experimental and theoretical approaches. Laser flash photolysis (LFP) was used to measure bimolecular rate constants (k2; M-1 s-1) for eaq- reactions with thirteen per-, and for the first time, polyfluorinated carboxylate structures. The measured k2 values varied widely from 5.26 × 106 to 1.30 × 108 M-1s-1, a large range considering the minor structural changes among the target compounds. Molecular descriptors calculated using density functional theory did not reveal correlation between k2 values and individual descriptors when considering the whole dataset, however, semiquantitative correlation manifests when grouping by similar possible initial reduction event such as electron attachment at the α-carbon versus β- or γ-carbons along the backbone. From this, it is postulated that fluorocarboxylate reduction by eaq- occurs via divergent mechanisms with the possibility of non-degradative pathways being prominent. These mechanistic insights provide rationale for contradictory trends between LFP-derived k2 values and apparent degradation rates recently reported in UV-sulfite constant irradiation treatment experiments.

Abstract
The Ni-catalyzed Kumada-Tamao-Corriu (KTC) cross-coupling between aryl fluorides and alkyl Grignard reagents has been used to achieve a highly selective Csp2-Csp3 bond construction via the carbon-fluorine (C-F) bond activation. However, the detailed mechanism of this groundbreaking KTC reaction remains unclear. Herein, we perform a series of analyses by density functional theory (DFT) calculations in order to understand the reaction mechanisms for the selective activation of a highly inert C-F bond by Ni catalysts with bidentate phosphorus ligands. An alternative mechanism for Ni/Mg bimetallic cooperation C-F bond cleavage instead of a traditional oxidative addition was proposed. The push-pull interaction in the transition state provided by the Ni center and the Lewis acid of the Mg cation smoothly breaks the C-F bond, supported by the significantly decreased activation energy from 30.9 to 4.6 kcal mol-1 and principal interacting orbital analysis. Owing to the elevated lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level and the electron-deficient metal center caused by the bidentate phosphorus ligand, the β-H elimination could be impeded, increasing the selectivity of KTC cross-coupling. Our DFT results rationally explain the experimental observations, which will be helpful for further development of KTC cross-coupling.

Abstract
The hydrofluorocarbon 245 isomers, 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane, 1,1,1,2,2- pentafluoropropane, and 1,1,1,2,3-pentafluoropropane (HFC-245fa, HFC-245cb, and HFC-245eb) were activated through C–F bond activations using aluminium chlorofluoride (ACF) as a catalyst. The addition of the hydrogen source Et3SiH is necessary for the activation of the secondary and tertiary C–F bonds. Multiple C–F bond activations such as hydrodefluorinations and dehydrofluorinations were observed, followed by hydroarylation and Friedel–Crafts-type reactions under mild conditions.

Abstract
The reaction of the rhodium(i) complexes [Rh(E)(PEt3)3] (E = GePh3 (1), Si(OEt)3 (5)) with HFO-1234yf (2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) afforded [Rh(F)(PEt3)3] (2) and the functionalized olefins Z-CF3CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH(E) (E = GePh3 (4a), Si(OEt)3 (7)). Conceivable reaction pathways were assessed using DFT calculations. Reactions of [Rh(E)(PEt3)3] with HFO-1234ze (E-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) yielded the rhodium fluorido complex 2 and [Rh{(E)-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH(CF3)}(PEt3)3] (9) via two different reaction pathways. Using complexes 1 and 5 as catalysts, functionalized building blocks were obtained.

Abstract
The oxidative addition of a range of robust aryl C–F bonds to a single Al(I) center supported by a (NacNac)− bidentate ligand ((NacNac)− = [ArNC(Me)CHC(Me)NAr]− and Ar = 2,6–Pr2iC6H3) have been explored by density functional theory calculations. Our calculations demonstrate that the Al(I) center-mediated C–F insertion generally proceeds via the concerted mechanism that involve both the donation (nAl→σC-F*) and back-donation (σF(p)→πAl(p)*) interactions. In addition, the predicted free energy barriers for the C–F bond activation show good agreement with the experimental information available. Finally, the comparative studies show that B(I) is the most active among group III metals (B, Al, Ga), thus supplying a testable prediction for experiments.

Abstract
Density functional theory calculations have been performed to study the detailed mechanism of Ni-mediated [3+2] cycloaddition of 2-trifluoromethyl-1-alkenes with alkynes via cleavage of two C-F bonds. It was found that the reaction pathway involves oxidative cyclization, the first β-fluorine elimination, and then intramolecular 5-endo insertion of difluoroalkene, followed by the second cleavage of C-F bond, and finally the dissociation of difluorides yields the fluorine-containing product cyclopentadienes in sequence. The overall rate-determining step is the combined processes of the β-fluorine elimination and the 5-endo insertion. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of different ligands and the regioselectivity of asymmetric alkynes. The detailed energy profiles and structures are presented in this study.

Abstract
Two gas-phase catalytic cycles involving C-F bond activation of trifluoroethanol and trifluoroacetic acid were detected by multistage mass spectrometry experiments. A binuclear dimolybdate centre [Mo2O6(F)]- acts as the catalyst in each cycle. The first cycle, entered via the reaction of [Mo2O6(OH)]- with trifluoroethanol and elimination of water to form [Mo2O6(OCH2CF3)]-, proceeds via four steps: (1) oxidation of the alkoxo ligand and its elimination as aldehyde; (2) reaction of [Mo2O5(OH)]- with trifluoroethanol and elimination of water to form [Mo2O5(OCH2CF3)]; (3) decomposition of the alkoxo ligand via loss of 1,1 difluoroethene; and (4) reaction of [Mo2O6(F)]- with a second equivalent of trifluoroethanol to regenerate Mo2O6(OCH2CF3)]-. Steps (2) and (3) do not occur at room temperature and require collisional activation to proceed. The second cycle is entered via the reaction of [Mo2O6(OH)]- with trifluoroacetic acid and elimination of water to form [Mo2O6(O2CCF3)]- and involves two steps only: (1) fluoride transfer to a molybdenum centre to form [Mo2O6(F)]-; (2) reaction of [Mo2O6(F)]- with trifluoroacetic acid and loss of water to regenerate [Mo2O6(O2CCF3)]-. Comparisons are made with the chemistry of [Mo2O6(OH)]- reacting with acetic acid.

Abstract
A series of fluorinated Ir(III)-terpyridine-phenylpyridine-X (X = anionic monodentate ligand) complexes were synthesized by selective C-F activation, whereby perfluorinated phenylpyridines were readily complexed. The combination of fluorinated phenylpyridine ligands with an electron-rich tri-tert-butyl terpyridine ligand generates a "push-pull" force on the electrons upon excitation, imparting significant enhancements to the stability, electrochemical, and photophysical properties of the complexes. Application of the complexes as photosensitizers for photocatalytic generation of hydrogen from water and as redox photocatalysts for decarboxylative fluorination of several carboxylic acids showcases the performance of the complexes in highly coordinating solvents, in some cases exceeding that of the leading photosensitizers. Changes in the photophysical properties and the nature of the excited states are observed as the compounds increase in fluorination as well as upon exchange of the ancillary chloride ligand to a cyanide. These changes in the excited states have been corroborated using density functional theory modeling.

Penetrating the Elusive Mechanism of Copper-Mediated Fluoromethylation in the Presence of Oxygen through the Gas-Phase Reactivity of Well-Defined [LCuO](+) Complexes with Fluoromethanes (CH(4-n)Fn, n = 1-3). Abstract
Traveling wave ion mobility spectrometry (TWIMS) isomer separation was exploited to react the particularly well-defined ionic species [LCuO](+) (L = 1,10-phenanthroline) with the neutral fluoromethane substrates CH(4-n)Fn (n = 1-3) in the gas phase. Experimentally, the monofluoromethane substrate (n = 1) undergoes both hydrogen-atom transfer, forming the copper hydroxide complex [LCuOH](•+) and concomitantly a CH2F(•) radical, and oxygen-atom transfer, yielding the observable ionic product [LCu](+) plus the neutral oxidized substrate [C,H3,O,F]. DFT calculations reveal that the mechanism for both product channels relies on the initial C-H bond activation of the substrate. Compared to nonfluorinated methane, the addition of fluorine to the substrate assists the reactivity through a lowering of the C-H bond energy and reaction preorganization (through noncovalent interaction in the encounter complex). A two-state reactivity scenario is mandatory for the oxidation, which competitively results in the unusual fluoromethanol product, CH2FOH, or the decomposed products, CH2O and HF, with the latter channel being kinetically disfavored. Difluoromethane (n = 2) is predicted to undergo the analogous reactions at room temperature, although the reactions are less favored than those of monofluoromethane. The reaction of trifluoromethane (n = 3, fluoroform) through C-H activation is kinetically hindered under ambient conditions but might be expected to occur in the condensed phase upon heating or with further lowering of reaction barriers through templation with counterions, such as potassium. Overall, formation of CH(3-n)Fn(•) and CH(3-n)FnOH occurs under relatively gentle energetic conditions, which sheds light on their potential as reactive intermediates in fluoromethylation reactions mediated by copper in the presence of oxygen.

Abstract
The rhodium(i) silyl carbonyl complexes [Rh{Si(OEt)3}(CO)(dippp)] () and [Rh{Si(OEt)3}(CO)(dippe)] () (dippp = 1,3-bis(diisopropylphosphino)propane, dippe = 1,2-bis-(diisopropylphosphino)ethane) were synthesized on treatment of the methyl compounds [Rh(CH3)(CO)(dippp)] () or [Rh(CH3)(CO)(dippe)] () with HSi(OEt)3 at low temperature. The methyl complexes and were prepared starting from the binuclear complexes [{Rh(μ-Cl)(dippp)}2] () and [{Rh(μ-Cl)(dippe)}2] (), respectively. The silyl complexes and as well as the precursors [{Rh(μ-I)(dippp)}2] (), [Rh(X)(CO)(dippp)] (: X = CH3, : X = I) and [Rh(X)(CO)(dippe)] (: X = CH3, : X = Cl) were characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy and the structures in the solid state were determined by X-ray crystallography. The silyl complex converts into the carbonyl-bridged complex [{Rh(μ-CO)(dippp)}2] () above temperatures of -30 °C by loss of the silyl ligand, whereas is more thermally stable and a reaction to the binuclear complex [{Rh(μ-CO)(dippe)}2] () was observed at 50 °C. The silyl complex reacted under irradiation with hexafluorobenzene and pentafluoropyridine to give the C-F activation products [Rh(C6F5)(CO)(dippe)] () and [Rh(2-C5F4N)(CO)(dippe)] (), respectively. As additional products the silyl dicarbonyl complex [Rh{Si(OEt)3}(CO)2(dippe)] () and the cationic complex [Rh2(μ-H)(μ-CO)2(dippe)2](+)[SiF5](-) () were identified. Compound was synthesized independently by treatment of with gaseous CO. In a similar manner, the dippp analogue [Rh{Si(OEt)3}(CO)2(dippp)] () was also prepared starting from . Photochemical reaction of with pentafluorobenzene and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine resulted selectively in C-H bond activation to afford and [Rh(4-C5F4N)(CO)(dippe)] (), respectively.

Abstract
P,N,N-Pincer nickel complexes [Ni(Cl){N(2-R2PC6H4)(2'-Me2NC6H4)}] (R = Ph, 3a; R = Pr(i), 3b; R = Cy, 3c) were synthesized and their catalysis toward the Kumada or Negishi cross-coupling reaction of aryl fluorides and chlorides was evaluated. Complex 3a effectively catalyzes the cross-coupling of (hetero)aryl fluorides with aryl Grignard reagents at room temperature. Complex 3a also catalyzes the cross-coupling of (hetero)aryl chlorides and arylzinc reagents at 80 °C with low catalyst loadings and good functional group compatibility.

Potential of methyl fluoride as a universal reaction gas to overcome spectral interference in the determination of ultratrace concentrations of metals in biofluids using inductively coupled plasma-tandem mass spectrometry. Abstract
Methyl fluoride (a mixture of 10% CH3F and 90% of He) was evaluated as a reaction gas in inductively coupled plasma-tandem mass spectrometry (ICPMS/MS) in the context of the determination of ultratrace concentrations of medically relevant metals (Al, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, Ti, and V) in blood serum and urine. Via product ion scanning, whereby only ions of the mass-to-charge ratio of the target nuclide were admitted into the octopole reaction cell, the various reaction product ions formed for each of the target elements were identified at different CH3F gas flow rates. Limits of detection (LODs) and of quantification (LOQs) and linearity of the calibration curve were documented under (i) optimized ICPMS/MS conditions for single-element monitoring and (ii) compromise conditions, allowing for multielement determination. Even under compromise settings, instrumental LODs were below 10 ng/L for all target elements, while the use of CH3F provided interference-free conditions for their determination in the biofluids of interest. Quantitative data obtained for Seronorm blood serum and urine reference materials were in excellent agreement with the corresponding reference values and/or results obtained using double-focusing sector-field ICPMS (for those elements for which no certified values were available or that were affected during reconstitution), proving the potential of this reaction gas for multielement ultratrace analysis via ICPMS/MS.

Abstract
A Ni-catalyzed arylation of inert C-O bonds that operates at temperatures as low as -40 °C is described. Unlike other methods for C-O bond cleavage utilizing organometallic species, this protocol operates at low temperatures, thus allowing the presence of sensitive functional groups with exquisite site-selectivity and stereoselectivity.
